Import home video DVD's into iMovie

I want to import my home video DVD's into iMovie for editing and backup. What is the best way to do this? I have already tried creating a disk image, but somehow when I open these images with iMovie, some parts of the original video are missing. (for example the video on DVD is 60 minutes, but the video opened on iMovie is 50 minutes). I also tried to convert to MPEG 2 using MPEG Streamclip, and purchased the MPEG2 Playback component from Apple Store, but it turns out that this component was intended for earlier versions of OS X, so I could not even install it. I am currently at a lockdown, please help me out!!!

There are directions on the MPEG Streamclip website on how to get the MPEG2 Playback component installed on your computer (I'm assuming your running Mac OS X 10.7). I'm cutting and pasting them here in case someone else runs into the same problems.
From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.
Also read the information for Snow Leopard below.
Snow Leopard and MPEG-2 Playback Component
The Snow Leopard upgrade DVD released on August 28, 2009 may wipe the content of the /System/Library/QuickTime folder during the upgrade process, and delete your MPEG-2 Playback Component installed in that folder. To use MPEG-2 files with MPEG Streamclip you have to reinstall the MPEG-2 component or restore it from a backup copy.
If you are going to upgrade to Snow Leopard
Open the /System/Library/QuickTime folder and drag the QuickTimeMPEG2.component file to your desktop to make a copy of it. Then upgrade to Snow Leopard. When the upgrade is complete, open the /System/Library/QuickTime folder again and move the QuickTimeMPEG2.component file from the desktop to the /System/Library/QuickTime folder (enter your administrator password if necessary).
If you already upgraded to Snow Leopard
You have to reinstall or restore your MPEG-2 Playback Component.
If you have a Time Machine backup of your System folder, then open the /System/Library/QuickTime folder, enter Time Machine and go back in time until you see the QuickTimeMPEG2.component file; select that file and then click Restore.
If you purchased the MPEG-2 Playback Component from the Apple Online Store, then you probably still have the DMG file that contains the installer. Use Spotlight to search for "QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg": if you find a file with that name, double-click it and then in the disk image, double-click the installer package for Intel Macs.
If you purchased the MPEG-2 Playback Component from the Apple Online Store but you can't find the QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg file, you can download the file again from the Apple Online Store if you remember the Apple ID used when you originally purchased it (if you forgot your Apple ID then go to Apple iforgot). Visit the Apple Online Store, click on "Account" in the store menu, then click "Downloadable Software Purchases," enter your Apple ID and password, and click the link to the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component to download it again.
If you obtained the MPEG-2 Playback Component from the installation of Final Cut Studio, then you can reinstall it again from the Final Cut Studio DVD. Insert the DVD and use the Finder's Go menu > Go To Folder... command to get to the /Volumes/Final Cut Studio/Installer/Packages/ folder inside the DVD. Locate the QuickTimeMPEG2.pkg or the QuickTimeMPEG2Pro.pkg installer: double-click it to reinstall the MPEG-2 component.

  • Import home video files vob to imove

We've made the conversion from PC to Mac and I would like to store all of my home videos from disc onto the iMac to watch via Apple TV. All of my video files were recorded on a SOny camcorder and saved as vob files. Is there an easy way to watch these saved files from the iMac to the big screen via Apple TV?

  • Can i imported real video player clips into iMovie, and if so how can i?

    (topic)

    Thanks for the advice.
I've actually downloaded and installed ffmpeg but the problem I'm experiencing now is that the videos do not convert. The program starts to work and then three seconds later I get the dialog box that says everything has been converted but the file created is 0KB and of course will not open.
Any ideas about what could be going wrong? I've attempted to convert the files to different formats and try converting different files as well. I still have the problem.
BTW, I'm just using iMovie to collect all my real videos together so that I can watch them as a DVD (for convenience). That's all.

  • Importing home video into iMovie not working

When I load my home video dvds they play with DVD Player but I want to import it into iMovie. When opening iMovie I select File/Import/Movie, select the DVD on the desktop and click on import. I then get this message: Nothing to Import... no importable movies were found...
These home videos were burned on a PC with Roxio over the last several years. Unfortunately our home was broken into, computers stolen and these dvds are my only back up. Now trying to figure out how to save them to my new iMac and do some more work with them. Do I need to purchase Quick Time Pro to import to iMovie?

Hi there, I have a question that maybe you can point me in the right direction. I was reading this post and you say to convert over to a DV. Is this done in imovie? I too am trying to import home movies into imovie so I can edit them. Any suggestions?
    Thanks,

  • Importing DVD's into iMovie 08'

I have 70 DVD's of home movies made on my Mac, is it possible to import these DVD's into iMovie 08'? If so, how is this done? I'm not sure if this is something that I would really want to do but perhaps to have all of my videos into one video library makes sense (similar to how we import cd's into itunes)
    Thank you

DVDs are in a socalled delivery format (mpeg2), which isn't meant and made for any processing as editing... so, any conversion process will add a (dramatic) loss in picture quality.
for usage in iLife, you have to convert'em first, in recommended order, choose one of the following tools/workarounds:
DVDxDV (free trial, 25$, Pro: 90$)
    Apple mpeg2 plugin (19$) + Streamclip (free)
    VisualHub (23.32$)
Drop2DV (free, requires installation of ffmpeg parts, google for it...)
Toast 6/7/8/9 allows converting to dv/insert dvd, hit apple-k
connect a miniDV Camcorder with analogue input to a DVD-player and transfer disk to tape/use as converter
    old apps:
    Cinematize >60$
    Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in

    Hi
Do You mean miniDV tape (interlaced video PAL or NTSC) ?
If so - iMovie'08 or 09 or 11 - are not tools of Choise if You want a DVD as result - They all discards every second line resulting in less quality.
Sync. Problem - If miniDV tape - How was it recorded -
Audio mode - Is Camera set to record in 12-bit 32kHz - Should be 16-bit 48kHz
Recording mode - SP (60 min on a 60 min tape) or LP (90 min on 60 min tape)
If LP-mode - Then You need - Same Camera as recorded - tolerances is to small even for a Camera of same brand and type to play-back.
I would use FinalCut Express and a setting of PAL/N TSC and 32kHz audio if Camera is set to record in 12-bit
If LP-mode - iMovie HD6 is more tolerant in Captuing than FinalCut and Imediatly after Import/Capture - Extract Audio
And set iM HD6 to NOT IMPORT AS INDIVIDUAL Clips - to many drop outs to work.

  • I imported videos from photo into iMovie when I set up iMovie (obvious mistake) and now iMovie doesn't work properly, nor can I move specific videos into a folder where I want them. How do I fix this?

I imported videos from photo into iMovie when I set up iMovie (obvious mistake) and now iMovie doesn't work properly, nor can I move specific videos into a folder where I want them. How do I fix this? I even tried deleting iMovie, bought a new copy and installed it, but the folder "iPhoto Videos" is still there and I can't get new clips loaded to iMovie, especially where I want them. Please help.

The iPhoto Videos do occasionally have problems. I've seen a lot of people write messages to this Discussion group describing similar problems. The only thing that seems to get around this problem is to pull the video clips out of iPhoto then import them directly into iMovie. Once the troubles with iPhoto Videos starts, I haven't yet seen anyone write back with something that they did to fix it.
The most difficult part of doing this is the movies in iPhoto might be a little difficult to track down. But you can create a smart alum that does that for you. Go to iPhoto > File Menu > New Smart Album:
Set the first pulldown menu to keyword, second to contains, then in the last box type Movie with a capital 'M'. Then click OK. This smart album more or less does as search of the whole iPhoto Library and only displays items that match your search tearm of "Movie" exactly. In that smart album then you can find the original Movies you want to move out of iPhoto and into iMovie, <CTRL> click on the Movie clip, then choose Reveal in Finder. That will jump you out of iPhoto temporarily and into the iPhoto Library folder. From there you can move that movie file to the desktop. Move all the clips you want, once they're all collected up go to iMovie and go to the File Menu > Import Files. Then point it to the desktop where you moved your video clips.
This will put all those videos into an Event folder in iMovie and bypass iPhoto Videos altogether.

  • Is there a way to put a video from facebook into imovie?

Is there a way to put a video from facebook into imovie?  The facebook video is on my friends wall. Draging it does not seem to work.

You won't be able to drag and drop it, I think the workaround would be to try and 're-record' it using QuickTime. There's a screen recording ability that will record your hold desktop. My suggestion is to launch QuickTime. Under File Menu > Screen Recording. Get that all setup and ready to hit the red record button. Open Facebook. Playback full screen if possible, then pause it. Start the screen recording, then play the Facebook video. By default, the video will be saved into your Home folder>Movies folder. Open iMovie, go to File Menu > Import > Movies... and then navigate your way to your Movies folder and import that clip into an iMovie Event.

  • Import home videos onto ITunes

How can i import my home videos/ DVDs onto Itunes just as you can import your audio CDs onto Itunes?

I had home videos that were sat in my iTunes library no problem but I couldn't get them across to my iPhone, even putting them in their own playlist, ticking all the right tabs in the synch menu etc. After a lot of playing around I found that if you right click on the video, select Get Info, go to Options and then in 'Media Kind', manually change it to Music Video and it will then happily go into the music videos playlist and will synch straight across.
    Hope this helps.

  • Import all your picture files into iMovie

How do you import all your picture files into imovie all at one instead of one at a time?

Put them into a folder then drag the folder to the timeline in a project. It's best to use iPhoto for this, as it's easily accessible from the Photo Browser in iMovie.
In iPhoto, create an album containing all the photos you wish to import to iMovie. The iPhoto album can then be dragged from iMovie's Photo Browser. It's best to place the photos in the desired order in the iPhoto album before dragging into the iMovie project.
By "pictures" I'm assuming that you mean photos (or stills) - not video clips.
