Import image metadata into Indesign CS5 automatically

Hi,
I've been looking all over for this and I have found various bits and pieces of information, but nothing comprehensive enough for a beginner. Perhaps I am researching it wrong. Could you please point me to a complete and easy to understand source, or give me some tips and details regarding the process?
I don't know if this makes a difference, but I am trying to export my pictures (there's quite a bit of them, so working in batches is preferable) into a sort of catalogue, and I'd like Indesign to pick up the metadata that was edited in Bridge.

Metadata is still pretty arcane.  The form that Adobe uses, XMP, is designed for automated software manipulation, but the software hasn't reached the point-and-shoot stage.
Now that forum-searching seems to have been fixed, searching for "metadata captions indesign" may turn up useful threads, such as this one for CS4, mentioning a script that can pull metadata from an image for use as a caption in an ID file.
On a more arcane level, when exporting to PDF InDesign does pick up and pass on "object-level metadata" for continuous-tone images: selecting an object with Acrobat 9 Pro's Touch-up Object and then right-clicking will let you choose Show Metadata for the object: the individualized metadata survives, though seeing it takes some doing.

    I'm doing a complex Indesign file with a link to a Excel file.
    To import the Excel file I have created several tables always using styles (table, cell, paragraph).
    The problem born when I make a correction into the file Excel and I update the link in Indesign.
    The text updated automatically bring a caracther style (the first that I have created).
    I don't want to apply any character style, but I want to maintein the paragraph style that I have applied.
    If I delete all caracther styles the problem is solved, but I need to have caracther styles in my layout.
    Anyone can help me?

    The import facility of Excel or Word Document is only on a PC system of Dreamweaver.
    File >> Import >> Excel Document
    File >> Import >> Word Document
    For mac system I understand this facility isn't there.  What can you do about this?
    1) Get hold of a PC and download a trial version of DW and import the file(s) and you are done;
    2) Ask a friend to do it for you;
    3) Post your excel file online and some nice guy like Nancy, john or Murray will help you out.

  • Using Transparent Photoshop images placed into Indesign CS5

    Placed a transparent photoshop image with clean/beautifully sharp mask inside my Indesign design.
    Added a drop shadow with Indesign and gave plenty of space with the outside frame thingy.
       However  when I export the PDF my round image mask shows a blunt ugly edge on my perfectly round masked circle.  The photoshop image is perfectly round...  How come Indesign blunts the right edge?
    The image is not being clipped by the frame, I have given it plenty of space.   This seems to be a CS5 issue as my coworkers who have similar file setups on their CS4 files get no circle blunting!    We just got the proofs back today and is not just a quirk of the pdf rendering on our screens.

    Ah,  says I'm using acrobat 5 compatibility setting.  My flattener options seem to be greyed out at PMrip ?

  • Problems importing PageMaker 6.52 file into InDesign CS5

    I have an 11-year old file that I need to import into either InDesign CS5 or FrameMaker 9 on Windows 7. The file was originally done on a Mac, so it had no extension. I have tried adding the .PM6 extension, but when that didn't work, I tried the .P65 extension. I know from the PDF properties that the file was done in PageMaker 6.52, but I don't have PageMaker, and neither does the original author at this point.
    When I try to import the file into InDesign CS5, I get this message: "The PageMaker document is damaged and cannot be recovered." (Note that I am using CS5, not CS2, so the issues I've seen posts about should not apply.)
    When I try to impor the file into FrameMaker 9, I get this message: "The filter encountered an error and could not complete the translation."
    I could try converting the PDF, but I'd like to get this file converted if that is possible.
    I am posting this in the FrameMaker forum as well to see if they may have any insights.

    It could well be that the error message is accurate and the file is damaged.
    If you’re on Windows you could download the PM 7 trial and try opening it with that. If that works, resave the file and then move it to InDesign.
    BTW, you keep saying import. InDesign cannot import a PM file, it can only open them.

  • How to Best Import QuarkXpress 8.0 Files into InDesign CS5

    Folks,
    Searched the forum, but I'm only finding info on older versions of Quark and InDesign.
    I've got a ton of end user documents in QuarkXpress 8.0 that I need to import into InDesign CS5.  (These are installation and operation manuals for data and telephony modems with lots of illustrations and diagrams in them.)  I just downloaded the trial version of InDesign CS5 and could use some help.
    The import procedure (for the older software) looked to be quite cumbersome.  I'm hoping that InDesign CS5 is more capable and efficient at importing QuarkXpress files.  I also read about Q2ID by Markzware.  Does that product work with InDesign CS5, or is it even necessary with InDesign CS5?
    Any advice and guidance will be appreciated.  Got to get started soon!

    Thanks for your comments.  I've done enough conversions in the past 25+ years as a tech writer to know that I will be faced with some clean-up efforts after the import.
    My Quark template is pretty simple... one big text box on the right-hand side of each page (landscape), leaving the left-hand side of each page for my illustrations and graphics to be placed.
    I think my biggest conversion problem is going to involve these graphics.  Many of them have text callouts (in text boxes) with arrows (made with Quark graphics) pointing to the proper spot on the illustration or graphic.  I'm wondering how well those will all convert and import.  I do have them all grouped in Quark.  By that I mean that one graphic and all of its associated text callouts and arrows are grouped.
    I guess I'll find out!

  • Can no longer import Word files into InDesign

    Hello,
    For many months I have been importing Word files into InDesign CS3 (Mac OSX 10.4.11) with no trouble, but I started having a problem yesterday.
    When importing a 17-page Word file with 16 footnotes, I got none of the text and only the footnote numbers. This is what I get in InDesign:

    These are the things I've tried already: restarting, deleting preferences, changing the import options, using CS2, importing someone else's Word file, importing a Word file that I imported successfully a couple of months ago. None of this works.
    It has been suggested that I save the Word file as rtf, but since I have 200 files to import and I'm using Word's character styles for italics, bold, small caps, etc., I'd rather try to fix this problem.
    Can someone help?

    I am using indesign CS2 and i'm trying to import a Word document into a new chapter for a book i'm laying out. it's about 30 pages, but there are at least 80 foot notes. i'm able to get about 1/2 of the document with the footnotes to flow correctly, then EVERYTHING disappears. the only way i've been able to get the remaining text to appear is by adding characters to the text. i'll hit "vvvvvvvvvvvv" a bunch of times and "magically" a little chunk of text and it's footnotes appears. then the ole disappearing act happens. so i do it again. i'm able to get all the text to appear finally, but when i delete the "vvvvvvvvvv" from the places i inserted them, the text disappears again. i have no idea why this is happening or how to fix it. any ideas?

    Re PDFs - actually, I'm working in Acrobat (not just a finalized PDF), and Acrobat does of course allow editing of a sort; I'd concluded that since Adobe is willing to tolerate that degree of editing with its product, it should therefore tolerate moving its native format (*.pdf) into another of its own native formats (*.indd). I see that's a misconception.
    This morning I tried all flavors I could find of getting my Acrobatted content into ID3, including copy/paste, place, and import (from the ID side); none was satisfactory.  Output from Acrobat to Word and then placing Word was fine for English but destroyed the Greek - not just wrong font, but complete gobbledygook and loss of all diacriticals.  Names of fonts don't matter for my purposes; the legibility of the English, and the legibility and tonic accuracy of the Greek do matter. Author of this project is not tech-savvy and is using old Greek system as well; nothing he or i can do to fix that.
    Current plan is to request author to provide me his native files, which will be Mac files.  Am I understanding the Import dialog and your collecitve comments to suggest that with that file resident on my PC (and unopened), I can use the Place dialog, with "Show Options" selected, to get the Mac file into ID?

  • Copying Japanese text from Word into InDesign CS5 - possible?

    Hi,
    I created an advert in English, and now the marketer has asked me to make a Japanese version.
    They have given me a Word Document with the Japenese text in it (in more or less the same paragraph structure to the English one) with instructions of what goes where.
    When I copy the paragraps into Indesign CS5, the font is just squares and shapes, not text.
    Is it possible to get the Japanese text working in InDesign? Is there a specific font selection I have to use?

    The group of Japanese fonts is the one containing Kozuka Mincho.  You do not need the  World-ready composer for simple left-to-right Japanese, and non-Japanese InDesign may do what you need.  If you need Japanese-specific text processing features (e.g., vertical text, automated application of "word" breaking rules), some are available in Adobe Illustrator and explained in its help files.  Or you could try Harbs' World Tools Pro.

    Has anyone had success importing Microsoft Word comments into InDesign 5.5? I've read that this is possible, however, all my attempts have failed. I've checked that Track Changes is on in both InDesign and MS Word.
    The one pattern with all the files I've attempted is that, by the time I receive the file, the author has already accepted all tracked changes. The comments remain, but they do not import into InDesign.
    I have 'track changes' ticked on the import dialog.
    Is there anything I'm missing? Tips from people who've done this successfully would be greatfully apprecated.

  • Image resizes when imported or placed into InDesign

    I'm having a problem with placing images into Indesign. The problem is random but sometimes when I place an image or drag it from my library into indesign the scale changes. It should place at 100% both horizontally and vertically but not always. when I check the size it may be slightly off either way. These images could be tiff, jpg, or eps files. Is this something that can be fixed with an update?

    Are you saying the image comes in scaled unevenly, or that it comes in at something besides 100%?
    Are there updates for your version that you haven't installed? Since you haven't told us what you are currently using, it's hard to know. The ONLY update I wouldn't unequivocally tell you to install in the 6.0.6 update for CS4. Before installing that you should read the documentation about how it might affect existing files with placed .ai art, and decide if this would be a problem, or a least a greater problem than anything that the patch is designed to fix.

    I try to place a streaming video into my Indesign CS5 Document. InDesing seems to find the File, cause it shwos up the preview image in the Media Window, but the videoslider nor the play-button of the media-window is working.

    When I export it as an interactive PDF, and I click on the videoframe, it first shows the security dialog as expected, but after that it is only the empty player and the progressbar looks like it can not connect to the streaming server.

    I think this isn't really an InDesign issue at all. It sounds like an Acrobat issue.
    First, you haven't said what version of Acrobat you're using. I'm assuming Acrobat X Pro?
    I've used this with a friend's Flash Media Server so I know it works. What version of Flash server do you have installed?
    I the link you provide I see a spaceband after the word "test" in the path. Could that be a problem?
    Other than that, it appears that you're following the requirements listed in the Help file for Acrobat X Pro.
    If you have further problems, you might post this on the Acrobat User Forum.
