Import incomplete clips

hello!
I just got a new HD camcorder - the Samsung HMX-H200 - and everytime I try to import, the clip gets cut short. I play the clip(s) in import mode & they seem normal & everything's there, but when I check the events once they're imported, there's a huuge chunk of the end missing :S
I've yet to try to convert the MP4's +and then+ import - I'd rather not have to do that for every time I edit.
Any & all help is greatly appreciated

i think it was just a weird glitch.
when i tried importing it manually, the videos were greyed out
no idea what changed the second time around :S

Importing video clips in AVCHD (Lite) into Aperture vs iMovie

I'm trying to figure out which application I should use for importing and storing video clips shot on my Panasonic DMC-ZS7 camera. This camera can shoot in AVCHD (Lite) or in Motion JPEG. I use the AVCHD (Lite) format to shoot the videos with this camera.
The two application options I currently have for importing video clips from this camera are:
a. Aperture 3.5.1 (I'm not using iPhoto since I have Aperture).
b. iMovie 10.0.1 (I'm not using Final Cut Pro)
When I first got this camera, Aperture 3 did not support the AVCHD Lite codec. Back then, iMovie could import video clips shot in AVCHD Lite, but it had to transcode the AVCHD video clips into AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec). Some time later, one of the Aperture 3 updates made it possible to import AVCHD Lite into Aperture (without having to transode into an intermediate codec), so we started importing our video clips shot in AVCHD Lite (together with our photos shot by the same camera) directly into Aperture.
iMovie 10 released in 2013 supports importing video clips shot in AVCHD Lite without having to transode them to AIC for storing these video clips in iMovie. So, now we have a dilemma that we need help with. Which application should we use going forward for importing video clips from this camera?
When I look at the metadata for the imported videos in Aperture, I see that the format of the imported video clips is listed as H.264. However, I can't seem to be able to find any information about the format in which iMovie stores imported videos. I can "Reveal in Finder" a video that I import into iMovie, and I see the size of the file and the .mov extension assigned to the file. With video files, the extension does not always determine the codec of the file, but in my non-expert opinion, the .mov extension is not H.264; I may be totally wrong here, though. What I have noticed, though, is that a video clip imported into iMovie has the file size that is about 10% larger than the same video clip imported into Aperture.
Therefore, I have three questions:
1. What format is a video clip (shot in AVCHD Lite) stored in Aperture 3.5.1 and in iMovie 10.0.1
2. Which format (the one used by Aperture or the one used in iMovie) is better suited for transoding AVCHD videos into? The balance of the quality and file size is the main consideration for us.
3. Which applications would you personally prefer using for importing video clips to and why?
I do want to use some of these video clips to make home videos in the future, utillizing iMovie. However, it seems I can still store the raw footage in Aperture and access this raw footage from iMovie to be able to create an iMovie project and a final home video. One of the concerns is that if we keep importing our video clips into Aperture, the Aperture library could grow beyond the size that Aperture can support and we may end up losing our photos due to the database corruption. Is this a real risk?

But it does not allow anything to be done to the event including deleting. This showed up at the beginning of a normal import session. This is fortunately the back-up evant.

Did you perhaps mess with the contents of the library in the Finder?

I have imported .mov clips created on a older mac os x (lion) and when I wanted to import them into fce, a quicktime conversion window opened up and converted them (I haven't experienced this in the past). I then imported the converted quicktime clips into my fce project. After doing this I took selected clips and put those edited clips on the fce timeline. When playing the video back in the fce timeline,I noticed
1) the video wasn't playing back smoothly like the original content
2) when looking at the timecode reading of the timeline, the timecode was sputtering as well as the video and audio. I exported to quicktime just to see if that was consistent, it was.
When I play the converted quicktime content independently of fce, it plays normally (no sputtering of timecode, video and audio. Need help to resolve the sputtering playback of converted video content in the fce timeline. I've never experienced this before. Any suggestions?

When you say you converted the clips before importing them into FCE, did you convert to AIC or DV and do the converted clips match your FCE Sequence settings exactly? If not, go back and convert the original files again, using the intended Sequence settings as a guide.

Playhead info for imported video clips is static/constant in iMovie 9 as I scroll over the clips. Is it possible to make it display correct info?

HI, I have been importing videos clips from a SD card to iMovie 09. These clips are analyzed for animal behavior and the timing information for a specific event is critical for proper analyses. Most of the times, the imported clips display correct timing information for a given frame as I scroll over the clips. However, sometimes, some clips show a static or constant timestamp for all the frames in a clip and the timing information doesn't change in the playhead as I scroll over different frames.
For such clips, I was wondering if it's possible to display correct timing information for the frames, and how? Since I only need frame timing info relative to the starting point, I am open to a solution that involves readjusting starting timestamp.

Several ways to do this.
I would scrub to the in point of the audio you want to change, then drag all the way back to the beginning of the clip. Then EDIT/SPLIT CLIP or right-click/Split Clip. Then go to the out point of the audio clip and drag to the right to the end of the clip. Then Edit/Split Clip. The clip in the middle should have your 25 minutes of audio.

I have a sony handicam and I imported the clips to iMovie and they lost quality and converted the audio to stereo. I want to import the project to final cut X and import the AVCHD in 1080p and surround sound and export the movie in bluray. Can I relink the clips without editing everything again?

Only photos taken with the iPad, copied onto it via the camera connection kit, or saved from emails/websites etc can be deleted directly on the iPad - either via the trashcan icon in the top right corner if viewing the photo in full screen, or via the icon of the box with the arrow coming out of it in thumbnail view.
Photos that were synced from a computer are deleted by moving/removing/de-selecting them from where they were synced from and then re-syncing. If you want to remove them all then normally you could just sync an empty folder (in terms of photos) to the iPad, but as you don't want to sync at the moment you can't do that.
You can reset the iPad back to factory settings and start from scratch with it : Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content And Settings

Is there a way to import clips from AVCHD folders I have copied from my camcorder to my hard disk? With FCE I could import these clips using log and transfer.

In FCP-X is there a way to import AVCHD clips from an AVCHD file folder I have copied from my Canon hard disk camcorder to my iMac hard disk? With FCE I used log and transfer with no problem; but, FCP-X doesn't import them. It will import AIC files that have been created in FCE from the original AVCHD files. If FCP-X will not import these files directly from the copied AVCHD folder, is there a workaround using other software to convert the files? For example, Compressor? (Canon does not provide any AVCHD conversion software for OSX).

I have exactly the same problem but the answer you (Tom) provided did not help in my case. Trying to "Import ->From Camera" and pointing to the AVCHD folder yields the error message: "(Folder) contains unsupported files or has invalid directory structure."

My question is: Is that not a "camera archive" of the type you talked about in the thread? Is it on principle not possible to import the files in that format/directory structure? If not, since the shots were not taken by myself, what should I ask the guy who shot the movies to give me to be able to work with them in FC?
I work with a brand new Final Cut Pro X 10.0.4 (still very clumsy with it) on an iMac 11,3 with MacOS 10.6.8.
I downloaded the latest version of codec updates from the Apple support site but no difference.

Importing .dv clips from hard drive -- clips imported in random order

I use Firewire DTE drives with my camera when filming. Previously I could connect the drives to my computer via firewire and then import the clips into iMovie HD and the clips would go into the clip sorter in chronological order.
As of about two weeks ago my clips have started showing up in the clip sorter in completely random order. My projects are typically about 400 clips, so going through and getting them in order takes forever.
Any ideas?

Instead of renaming them manually you can use a program such as namemangler: http://www.manytricks.com/namemangler/ to change the names at a batch

Import video clip from DVD

Can anyone help me learn what I need to import video clips from my family video DVD's? I created the DVD's from tapes through Pinnacle Studio 8 (before becoming a Mac fan).

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums.
My personal choice would be to edit them to a compatible format such as DV, you can do this with mpegstreamclip (free) provided you have the QT mpeg2 playback component installed (think it's $30), there are other third party software solutions, no doubt others will have their favourites.

Blocky Pixellated .M2T Import of clips trimmed in MPEG2VCR

Hi all,
I have a strange problem with CS3 that I was not experiencing with PPro 2.0. This is on a clean install/format/OS on a new machine, XP Pro, Quad Core Pentium, 2GB ram, two 500gb sata drives. (I tested and the same problem happens on my older machine, so it's not machine-specific.)
My workflow is I have many, many short .M2T clips 1080/60i from the Canon HV20. I can import these raw clips into CS3 fine, no problems. However, with most, I use Womble MPEG2VCR to first "trim" the clips and delete some unwanted footage at the beginning and end of each clip (and to save HDD space). This does not re-encode the clips, and I save the trimmed clips to a new TS file with the .M2T extension.
In PPro 2.0, these 'trimmed' M2Ts played perfectly and could be edited just fine on the timeline, adding transitions/effects/etc. alongside the 'raw' untrimmed M2Ts. However, now in CS3, when I import the MPEG2VCR trimmed clips, I get a 1st frame of all red, then after terrible pixellated and blocky playback, with some all red frames interspersed in there as well. I am just guessing, but it seems like CS3 has lost knowing where to find the I frames and is having a problem putting back together the sequence of IPB frames.
Strange thing is, if I save the trimmed clips as an MPEG Program Stream file (.MPG extension) in MPEG2VCR, those clips import and play perfectly in CS3. When I look at the properties of both files in CS3, all the details are exactly the same for both files (except size, the MPG file is just slightly smaller than the M2T version).
I know the obvious and slightly sarcastic answers to my problems :) -- just import as MPG! Or don't import M2Ts at all! Use an intermediary like Lagarith lossless AVI or Cineform! But I really don't want to do that, as I have thousands of M2Ts I need to import and don't want to convert all of them to AVI if it's not needed for my rather basic editing needs. And I'm concerned if I import some clips as M2T and some as MPG, if I then go to export the finished timeline as M2T there may be a problem. (I know probably not, but i'd feel safer keeping everything consistent as M2T for the importing).
So does anyone know how to fix this problem? I know I could go back to PPro 2.0 but I have a big investment in CS3 and I like its new features. Thanks guys (and gals) for your help in this forum.

As another experiment, I tried trimming an M2T file in Womble MPEG Video Wizard DVD (their replacement for MPEG2VCR) and the trimmed clip again plays back pixellated in PPro CS3 but ok in other programs.
Rather than just throw in the towel and go back to 2.0, I'd really like to know the root cause of why this is happening, and why the files work ok in 2.0 but not in CS3. My understanding is that a TS file (transport stream) and MPG file (program stream) are identical except that the TS (M2T) file adds a few additional error correction bits for carriage of the signal over less reliable carriers, like broadcast. There must be something with those bits that are changed by trimming in MPEG2VCR, even though it is supposed to be a GOP-accurate editor, which other players can correct for but not CS3.

Premiere CS5 import avi clips without sound. How can I import avi clips with sound without convert?

I have the following problem, please help:
I would like to import avi clips in adobe premiere. All clips have the same avi codec. But unfortunately my adobe premiere does not import the sound of a few
avi clips. It is wired because about 10 out 70 avi clips which have all the same avi codec does not work with sound in premiere CS5. In the timline premiere import the video and audio line but there are no audio waves in the about 10 avi clips. additonally premiere plays the 10 avi clips in the source monitor without sound. Furthermore when I open the 10 avi files without adobe premiere they have sound, but with premiere there are no sound in the 10 avi clips.
What can I do, so that I can import all avi files with sound. I do not want to convert each of the avi files because then they have not a good quality and it is to complicated and it takes to much time to convert all files in this video project and in the other video project in my future.
Consequently How can I import all avi files so that they have immediately sound? Do I have to change some premiere settings?

Both video clips have the following audio codec:
AAC
In the folder where all raw video clips exist there are a few new files with the codec ending: .AVD ("the name of the file".AVD)
But the 2 video clips mentioned above does not have any files like .AVD oder something else like that. But the first one works and the second one doesnt work.

Problem with importing a clip from another iMovie project

Hello
I want to import a clip from one iMovie project to another iMovie project.
Both projects are in 16:9, but when I import a clip it's no longer in 16:9.
The clip is croped and I have a black bar on the right and left side.
How can I solve this ?

Have you tried Copying the clip in Project A and Pasting it into Project B?

Importing letterboxed clips to a widescreen project

Hi all,
I have just started playing around with iMovie and have a load of my Dad's video which has been recorded on a Panasonic DV camera with "Cinema" mode enabled (It shoots in 4:3 but adds letterbox to simulate 16:9).
What I really want to do is import these clips to a widescreen DV project and have iMovie crop the letterboxing off and essentially zoom in to the widescreen picture in the middle, creating a proper widescreen movie (obviously the quality will not be perfect as you will be stretching the video in the middle but the aspect ration should be correct).
I have looked all over for a way of doing this but have yet to find anything.
Any help much appreciated.

within iMovie, what's the easiest way of saving them all separately outside of the project so that I can batch convert them all with Streamclip
No need to save them outside iMovie.
Just quit iMovie. Then with MPEG Streamclip drill into the iMovie project (select All files in the open file dialog) and choose /Cache/Timeline Movie.mov as an input. (That feature was suggested by an iMovie user (cough, cough)).
