Import into LR4 using PV2010?

After trying LR4 beta for about a month as a LR3 heavy user, my conclusion is there are features worth the upgrade, BUT I prefer the earlier Process Version and Basic Develop panel to the new one.  I understand that I may choose not to upgrade the Process Version on photos in my present catalog as I import the catalog into LR4, thereby causing LR4 to look like LR3 for those preexisting photos.  However, I'm unclear as to whether there is a way to configure LR4 so that it will import all new photos using PV2010, thereby continuing to develop them using the LR3 Basic panel and other develop controls.  Does this option exist?

make a develop preset for 2010 process and apply it at import

  • Importing into LR4

Hello, I have downloaded the LR4 trial. I'm not sure yet if it's the best way, but I have existing photo folders on the hard drive, so decided to import from there into LR4 using the 'add' methos, then convert to DNG afterwards. I wanted to keep the same file structure, and have the photo's just 'referenced' by LR4
In Martin Evening's book it states: 'The add option is the one I suggest you use mostly here. With an "add" option you are telling Lightroom to "reference" the files where they are located on the computer.'
When I saw the 'reference' word I thought that LR4 would not 'take over' my folder system. But after importing one folder, I realise that although I can view the folders I haven't yet imported into LR4 with the Nikon View NX software I have been using with Capture NX2, View NX will now not read the one folder that I have imported into LR4.
This suggests to me that LR4 has indeed taken over my file structure - can anyobe suggest what I should have done (I would like to keep my existing structure and open files from it in LR4 AND any other program I wish). Also, after I have imported all folders from my hard drive, it might be worth then importing direct from card. Can anyone give me the basic pointers to doing this and keep the same 'referenced file' structure.
I'm a bit of a novice, and although I'm sure Martin Evening's book is very good for experienced people, I find that it just doesn't make things easy to understand for those like myself - I have order Scott Kelby's book and hope that is easier for me
    Thank you

    Roy,
You're on the right track. When you import into LR using Add, all it does is put pointers to the imported files in its database. Absolutely nothing happens to the files on disk. They are still in their original folder, available to any other program that is able to open them. (Although if you're using LR to its full potential, you probably won't need to access any of your images directly.)
I don't know what your problem is with View NX. What is it telling you?
Ahh...Richard probably has it right. If you converted to DNG, of course your Nikon software won't be able to deal with the images.

  • "Splotchy" Nikon .NEF imports into LR4

    Hi,
I am a new LR4 user.  I have the latest 4.2 update.  My camera is a Nikon D7000 and I have noticed something rather odd since I've started using LR4.  When I import raw .NEF files into LR4 any area of the image that would normally be smooth has a "splotchy", textured appearance to it.  Even at ISO 100, this textured appearance is visible on blurred, normally smooth portions of the image when zoomed in at 2:1 or 3:1.  When I open the same image in Capture NX2, the same portions of the image are smooth as expected with no noise or otherwise weird appearance.  To avoid this, I have to open the image in NX2 and save as a .TIF, then open in LR4.  Then, everything looks okay.  I have tried all the various profiles under 'Camera Calibration' but nothing gets rid of the annoying textured appearance.  Anyone else noticed this, or am I doing something wrong?

Thank you for  your response.  I think you hit the proverbial "nail on the head".
When getting the screenshots ready, I paid attention to the settings on the 'Detail' panel.  When I changed the default Sharpening amount from 25 to zero, the images looked almost identical at 300% zoom.  I also noticed on the NX2 'Camera Settings' panel that a small amount of noise reduction was automatically being applied upon import.  When turning that off, the images looked the same.  When sharpening is increased in either program to where artifacts are present, the two images start to differ in appearance, but I assume that is due to the different sharpening algorithms used in the different programs.  I will probably continue use Photoshop for final image sharpening.  I haven't found anything else to compare to it for final sharpening.
Thanks again for helping this 'newbie' to Lightroom!
    Mike

  • How can i import into imovie using the camera's built in memory?

How can I import into imovie from my cannon video camera built in memory.  All that comes up when I connect the USB cable is what is stored on the memory card and it doesn't give me the option to use what is stored on the built in memory

That is not a feature of iPhoto - suggest to Apple - iPhoto Menu ==> provide iPhoto feedback.
With the new Photo app later this year the integration between IOS and the Mac will be much greater

  • Image Corrupted After Import into LR4?

Several times now I've imported images into LR4 from my External HD and and a few the files are corrupted. (See attached image)
I realize that LR is not suppose to do anything to the files on the disk when importing... but I've checked the RAW images from back-ups and they are not corrupted prior to import into LR. AFTER import into LR the actual file (on the external HD) IS corrupted in both LR and then on the External HD.
My workflow has been to copy files from my CF  Card to the External HD (Western Digital 3 TB) ino the appropriate file... then go to LR4 and import.
Can anyone suggest what the problem is?  I replaced the Card Reader... same problem occurs.  I've checked numerous RAW files in Bridge... none are shown as corrupted (prior to LR4 import)

The corruption may or may not be “sudden”.  If things look ok in Library then it happened sometime between initial preview building during import and you’re viewing the image in Develop.   If the last place things looked ok was in the Import thumbnail grid, then that is only showing the camera-embedded previews, so the images may be corrupted on the card, already.
The most important thing is to determine what the problem is, where the corruption comes from, so you can fix it.  It could be the camera, the card, the camera-to-computer USB cable, the card-reader, the usb-slot, the computer-memory, the computer hard-drive, the USB-drivers, LR, itself, or some other software, like Microsoft Security Essentials has caused problems for some people in the past, although why is not really understood.
If the corruption is still occurring with the latest images, then you can experiment by changing one or more of the components mention above, and see if things are ok or still corrupted.
As far as recovery, if part of the image data is missing or zeroed out overwritten with random junk, there’s no way to get that bad data, back, from the existing file because the files, themselves, only have one copy of the data.
The three things I can think of to suggest are:
    1)      If the preview in Library doesn’t show the corruption then there are ways to retrieve the previews from the LR preview cache as JPGs.  This isn’t the same as the RAW data, but is better than nothing.
    2)      If the camera-embedded preview has not been damaged—it is typically stored in front of the raw data so depending on where the damage is, it could be intact, then there are ways to extract the camera-embedded preview from the raw file, which again is better than nothing.
    3)      The best thing is if you have a backup of the images that don’t show the corruption, either because the images are still on the card, or because you made a backup during import and the corruption happened sometime after import, then you could copy those over the top of the corrupted files and be ok.
These things may or may not be possible depending on your situation, though.  If you don’t have any backups that are ok, and LR’s previews are bad, and the in-camera preview is tiny or also damaged, then you’ll entirely out of luck for those images.  And things maybe really bad if it’s the hard-drive that’s failing and you have no backups of your images, there, either.  It is important to determine what is wrong, and with the least effect on the images that are still good.

  • HFR Reports imported into ppt using smart view

    Hi All,
    Hyperion financial reporting version:11.1.2.334
ORACLE smart view version for office :11.1.2.5.210(Build 042)
    Microsoft power point version 2007
Hyperion financial reporting  reports imported into Microsoft power point presentation  using smart view, total 55 HFR reports are imported into power point presentation.
The  entire ppt file with 60 slides ,55 reports+5 textual commentary slides ,total size of the pptx file is 21 mb,
We have tried using the compress picture option available in power point, reducing the file size to 3.5 MB after compression(96 ppi ,see attached image),but image quality is lost, numbers in some images not readable at all.
Also tried the compression options with 220ppi,150ppi,but not seen any change in the file size reduction.
We are looking at reducing the size of ppt file as 20 mb file is difficult to transfer by email or to download, is there any workaround or other best solutions to reduce the size of an image ,we are ok to lose the quality of an image if the numbers and labels are readable.
Thanks in advance for your valuable suggestion.
    Regards,
    Ashok

    Hi Joshi,
Thanks a lot for your valuable time and inputs,i have tried with winzip and as well 7 zip,but not reduced the size.
if i see my users existing ppt file size is 4 mb (60 slides),but these reports designed in excel sheet (not in HFR) and then copied to  PPT.
Tabular reports copied from excel to ppt as windows metafile and graphs and charts are as image file.
is there any possibility to change the image format before or after importing the HFR report into ppt using any SDK in smart view?
thanks in advance for your valuable inputs,it will be a great help.

  • Why won't my RAW files import into LR4?

    Hello all,
Something very strange is going on with LR4.  I have been using LR since version 1 and never had this happen before.  When I have an SD card filled with jpegs and RAW files from my Fuji X100 camera and try to import all of them into LR 4, ONLY the jpeg files get imported.  None of the RAW files get moved into LR at all.  I have to create a new folder, move all the RAW files so that they are alone, and do a second import.  Why is this?  Why cannot I import all at one time, not even thinking about the difference?
Seems absolutely stupid that my RAW files are being ignored.
Thanks for the help.  Appreciate it.

Sorry, I assumed that you were shooting RAW + jpg.  What I think you are now saying is that you have a shoot in which some of the files were shot in RAW and some in jpg?  In that case, I don't know why it would only import RAW on the first go round and jpgs on the second. When I have mixed files (I shoot only RAW, but panoramas  are by definition only jpgs), they all import on the first try. In fact, even video files come in at the same time.
If you did shot RAW+Jpg then you could either check the box, in which case you will see two files, or uncheck it, in which case you will see one (with the other hidden). But since that's not the case, that check box doesn't apply to you.
Right.  Most of my shots are jpegs.  But on rare occasions, I want a RAW file so I hit the RAW button on the X100 and then shoot RAW for one shot.  This last import I had 10-15 RAW shots and they would not import along with all the jepgs.  This happens everytime I have mixed file formats.  Very frustrating.
    Thanks for trying!

  • Financial Reports import into excel using Smart View - error

    All,
I have encountered an error message when trying to use R&A Import.
    The message is
Oracle Hyperion Smart View for Office, Fusion Edition
"Excel cannot insert the sheets into the destination workbook, because it contains fewer rows and columns than the source workbook. To move or copy the data to the destination workbook, you can select the data, and then use the Copy and Paste commands to insert it into the sheets of another workbook."
This only affects some users and then they are able to reimport the reports no problem in the same workbook after the error is posted.
Does anybody know how to fix this issue?
We are using Excel 2007, Oracle Hyperion Smart View 11.1.13, Financial Reporting Studio, Hyperion Planning 11.1.13.

Answer appears to be users were using Excel 2007 in compatibility mode. Switching from compatibility mode to saving in Excel 2007 removed the errors.

  • Can't import into imovie using HV20 as AV/DV bridge

I've trying to import some old VHS footage from a VHS player to imovie v6.0.3 using a Canon HV20 as a analogue to digital convertor. I've got about 30GB free space on my Intel imac. It captures a fraction of a second of VCR image and then switched to importing the camcorder tape. I've had no problem importing VCR footage directly to camcorder (and then copying to imovie) but I want to avoid this two-step process and go straight from VCR to imovie vai camcorder in one go. BTW the chain goes VCR - stereo video cable - camcorder (AV/DV ON) - firewire - imac running imovie.
I've read somewhere that imovie v4.1 works fine but newer versions tend to work with specific convertors only. Can anyone help with a solution please and/or confirm this is a general problem.

I have an HV20 and just did the same thing with my MacBook Pro and a VHS VCR, with my HV20 in the middle. I used iMovie 08 and had no trouble at all.
The only reason that it would switch to the camcorder tape for me was if the VHS tape ended and I didn't manually stop the import in time.

  • Importing into LR4 all my images come in at 1024x683 pixels.

I've just done a huge import of over 100,000 pics. Each image has come in a 1024x683 pixels. This is not the original size. What is going on here? I only shoot Raw at a minimum of 12 Megabyte file size. I have checked all import and preference settings. All help will be greatly appreciated.

InDesign does not support pixels as a unit. All InDesign files use physical measurements for sizes, such as inches, centimetres, or points. InDesign CS5 introduced a measurement called “pixels”, but it is not pixels, it is points (1/72 inch).
When a raster image is imported, InDesign determines the physical size on the page by dividing the resolution (in pixels) by the ppi setting on the image (ppi for Pixels Per Inch). If your image has a resolution of 72 ppi, then each pixel is 1/72 of an inch, which is the same size as InDesign’s wrongly named pixel. If your image has a resolution of 300 ppi, then each pixels will be imported at 1/300 of an inch, completely ignoring the pixel unit of measure you are using. The pixels in that image will be much smaller than 1/72 inch, so the image imports smaller. Adobe made the same mistake years ago with Illustrator and nothing but confusion  has been the result.
You can either scale the image up so that it’s effective resolution is 72 ppi (416.67%) or open the image in Photoshop and go to Image > Image Size and change the resolution to 72 ppi. If you do the latter, be sure you set Resample to None. Resave, then import that image and the size will be what you expect.

  • Nikon D70s files cannot be imported into LR4

How are you copying your images to your computer?
There are some reports that Nikon has a piece of software that will copy files but it corrupts them.
Try copying by dragging and dropping from the card to a folder on your disc and then import those files to LR.
Also, before anyone can really help they'll need more details. Like what OS you're using.
    Good luck.

  • Photo imported into ID is not as black as surrounging black

    Hello all.
Using CS5.  In creating a document in ID, an image that has been done in Photoshop with strong black backgrounds is imported into ID using File > Place.  In ID, there are two black panels on each side of the photo.  On screen it looks fine (blacks match) but on printing, the black in the photo is not as black (more grayish) than the two side panels.  Is there anything that could be done to enhance the black in the photo?
    Thanks.

I don't believe I've ever seen a photo with a black background that wasn't added in Photoshop that had the same flat color throughout, so the odds of getting a perfect match all the way along all edges is practically nil.
You might want to consider removing the background in Photoshop and placing the photo in a frame with the black fill, or go with the flow a bit and use a colro that decidedly does not match so it doesn't look like you tried and failed. I'll often use a white (or some other contrasting color) line around the edge to break the two apart, too.
It's also very important that you set the prefernence for Appearance of Black to Display All Blacks Accurately or you have no idea what the really look like.

  • Converting files to import into iMovie HD

I've been searching the forum but cant find anything that helps me...
    I have an mpeg (a .m2p file)
I've tried converting it into all sorts of things to import into iMovie, using the likes of "ffmpegx" and "mpeg streamclip".
    I've tried converting to mpeg4 mov files, mpeg4 mp4 files, H264, .DV.
Most of the time even quicktime will not play them, or in the case of the .DV files, not only is it massive (like 50 gig) but takes hours to import.
Basically I have a 2gig .m2p (mpeg2) file and want to convert it into something that iMovie will read without taking 6 hours.
I'm new to OS X, and video editing/converting in general... someone please point me in the right direction.

    .m2p file
Have you tried this with MPEG Streamclip (Notice that MPEG2 conversions require the $20 Apple MPEG-2 Playback Component):
"File/Export to DV.../Compression: DV (DV25)". Choose "Split DV stream in Segments" if the content is more than 9 minutes 27 seconds because iMovie 1-4 can't reliably handle longer clip files and it might be a good idea to limit the converted .dv file's size anyway (segmented clips play seamlessly in iMovie).
You can save the converted DV directly into iMovie project's Media folder to save time and HD space (iMovie prompts you what to do with the clip when the project is opened. Notice that iMovie HD 5 now stores its project folder as a package -- MPEG Streamclip can save straight into the package's /Media folder!)

As Silkrooster said, should be easy enough with layer styles and blending modes. To mimic the curvature you can use a simple warp style as well. You may just need multiple duplicates of the layer for ultimate control...

Importing into Flash using a Fireworks image - advice please!
New'ish to Flash so hope I'm in the right forum ;-)
I have made and image using gradients in Fireworks and have been using FW for ages (please see example below).
I am importing into Flash CS4 this image and want to use it with a Flash component however the image quality is really bad in Flash and I cant figure out why. I have increased the image to 300dpi in Fireworks to see if that helps and it doesn't.
I'm hoping this is a simple thing I am missing due to not knowing Flash as well as I do Fireworks.
Really grateful for any advise. P.

    Hi there,
No not trying to adjust size of the image in Flash, do that all before hand.
In Fireworks I can adjust resolution but don't seem to be able to in Flash, is this def the case?
