Import Kodak photos

I bought a kodak camera and loaded the software. The picts open and download into the Kodak folder. I am trying to get them to also show up in my iPhoto library but I get an error that says that the JPEG is an unreadable file. I moved the Kodak folder into my iPhoto library folder but that didn't help either. I want to make a photo album and can't do with the photos on the Kodak side.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. First, don't place any file/folder inside the iPhoto Library folder. That's a no-no. Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto Library folder from the Finder
What is the format/extension of the files? Can you view the photos with Preview? Open preview and then select all of the photos in the folder and drag onto the Preview icon in the dock. Also what model camera is it?

You will need an application that can convert those pcd files into one that iPhoto supports, mainly jpeg. GraphicConverter is supposed to support many, many formats and might just support the pcd. If so you could use it to convert them to jpegs.
There's an automator workflow that I've put into an application that will take many image files and convert them into jpeg with the RGB color profile. I've never tried it on the Kodak files but you can give it a try. It's called +*Convert to JPG and Embed sRGB profile*+ and can be downloaded from Toad's Cellar. Make a copy of a couple of files and see if it will work. If so then you can batch convert folders of the files at once by dragging them onto the application.
I believe GC can do batch conversions but am not familiar with the application.

Import Kodak Photo CD discs

hello...new mac user, been pc user forever. Comfy with Photoshop (on a PC) but interested in exploring iPhoto '08. Looks like it could be useful (in a pinch).
Sorry for a basic question but can't seem to get off the ground here.
Trying to import several .PCD images from a CD but iPhoto won't recognize them. I'm using OS v 10.5.4. How do I import them in?
Do I really need to go back to my PC and convert the image format to .TIFF or .JPEG, etc? Is there a workaround / app / something that will allow me to import and work directly from the .PCD format. This is my preferences for all kinds of reasons.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. the .pcd image format is a Kodak proprietarily one that is not supported by the system. You can try GraphicConverter in the demo mode to see if it can read and convert those files. If so GC can batch change files (although I've not used it enough to know how to set it up for batch editing).
Otherwise you may have to use the PC to convert.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

I'm not really a computer guy.Just got a Kodak easy share camera. When I import the photos, they go to the area with my name in a file with the date. How can I move them to iphoto, or even better, import them directly to iphoto??

in the iPhoto preferences be sure the action when camera is connected is open iPhoto
What program are you using to import the photos?
If they are in a folder you can drag that folder onto the iPhoto icon in the dock to import - our launch iPhoto and under the file menu import from that folder

Import of Kodak Photo CD-format

How can I import files with extentions .pcd in Lightroom 1.1 from a Kodak Photo CD. In Photoshop CS3 (Windows XP), with the plugin "Photo CD.8BI", I have no problems to read such files.

PhotoCD is a dead format. Shame really as it was pretty good. Kodak however,
got greedy and wouldn't open it up and so it died. I would suggest you
convert your PCD images to TIF. I doubt that Lightroom will ever support it.

Kodak Photo CD format

I have hundreds of Kodak Photo CD's which I built up by having my negatives scanned onto this format from the 90's and early 2000. I'd love to get these images into Aperture in their original format and have Aperture treat them like RAW files. Aperture doesn't support this format at the moment so the only way to import them is to use Photoshop and the Kodak Photo CD plug-in and then save the files as TIFF images. Messy and time consuming. It would be much easier to just pop the CD into my Mac Pro and have Aperture import them just like any camera-card.
I have requested this through the feedback form http://www.apple.com/feedback/aperture.html If like me you also have a stack of old Kodak Photo CD's that you'd like to manage in Aperture then use the form to request it that Aperture recognises the format, the more people who do this will mean Apple will look at adding this format.
Just how many people out there have images on this format?

This is another "long way" but you might want to try to use the program Graphic Converter included free with most Macs to change the Kodak format to one that Aperture recognizes. It is a powerful program that recognizes and converts many photo file formats. It can also be run in Batch mode (may take a while), and you can save the converted files on your HD for import to Aperture. Maybe less hassle than the iPhoto way.

Please help me open these photos. They are very important to me and I need to access them.

After downloading the PHSPCS3_Cont_WWE.exe, double click on it to extract the contents, probably to your desktop.
Then in the Goodies folder, Optional Plugins folder, you'll see the Kodak PhotoCD folder
Open that and copy the Photo CD.8BI to C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 11\Plug-Ins
Copy the profiles to C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Color\Profiles

Photoshop CS4 (WIN11.0.2) Kodak Photo CD problem

I checked the Goodies folder on the Content disc for a plugin, as well as the Adobe website, but I couldn't find a plugin. I have thousands of Phot CD images. How can I make this work?

Kodak Photo CD conversion issues

The Kodak Photo CD seems to be obsolete these days, but I have a number of old Photo CDs from years ago, so I have an interest in converting the files to some other format in the best way possible. In trying to do so with Photoshop CS2, I've noticed some issues:
1. Highlights are washed out. This is not so bad when the highlights are in the sky and I just lose some cloud detail, but it's quite unpleasant when the highlights are in people's faces. When I try converting the files with Paint Shop Pro, results look somewhat inferior in other ways, but there's more detail in the highlights, so this seems to be a Photoshop problem.
2. Photoshop provides the option of 16-bit colour when importing from Photo CD, which looked good to me, so I used it. I've only just realized that, as far as I can tell, the Photo CD images contain only 8-bit colour information, so I've just been wasting space by saving large TIFF files with 16-bit colour. I wonder why Photoshop provides this useless option! Or does it have some purpose unknown to me?
Has anyone found a good way of converting Photo CD images that doesn't wash out the highlights?

Yes, I've seen the Ted Felix site, downloaded his DLL, and used it with Paint Shop Pro. Unfortunately, although it does preserve more of the highlights, in other respects the Photoshop conversion looks better.
As you say, it seems that it would be possible for an intelligent conversion tool to convert a standard PCD image to a TIFF with genuinely useful 16-bit colour. Unfortunately, no-one seems to have produced such a tool. I tried asking here just in case anyone has found a better solution than the ones I've tried.
I get the impression that Adobe merely bundles the conversion tool provided by Kodak without attempting to correct its defects or even to document it properly (the Photoshop help says very little about it).
Although PCD is more or less a dead format now, there must be lots of old Photo CDs at large in the world, and quite a few people interested in converting those images. I suppose most people innocently convert the images with whatever tool they have, and wrongly blame the PCD format itself for the imperfect results they get.

Unfortunately there is no plugin for photoshop elements on the mac side running mavericks that i know of.
You should be able to import the photos into iPhoto from the cd

I am unable to import new photos in iPhoto 11. Perhaps I should just reinstall from iLife disk? Will it affect my photos in any way?

I have iPhoto 11 installed on my MacBook. I am now unable to import new photos using USB or by plugging the camera directly into the laptop. Never had that probem before with this camera. Perhaps just reinstall iPhoto from the iLife disk?

Okay I will try reformating the camera's card. However all is well when I export photos to my iMac at home or onto my iPad.
If your suggestion does not work should I try reinstalling iPhoto from the iLife disk? If so, how do I go about doing that or is there a website somewhere explaining this?

Thumbnails show up. LR just will not import them.

If the Import button is not clickable, that means that Lightroom thinks you have no new photos to import (one possible reason is that they are duplicates)
So, you need to figure out why Lightroom thinks that. The way I would do this is to search your Library module for at least one of the photos, by file name. To do this, you would follow all 4 of these steps in sequence:
Click on All Photographs in the Catalog Panel on the left of the Library Module
Turn off all Filters (Ctrl-L or Cmd-L once or twice)
Expand all stacks: Photo->Stacking->Expand All Stacks
Search for one or more of the photos using the Filter Bar (press backslash), search by File Name

Lightroom doesn't use the Camera Raw plug-in. All of the Camera Raw technology is part of the Lightroom program. You will either have to upgrade to Lightroom 5 or use the DNG converter to create digital negative copies that can be used with Lightroom 4.

Next time you open the photos application hold down both of the keys suggested and then launch the application in the usual way. If you do this you will be presented with the opportunity to repair your library.
