Import legacy photos into Aperture 3 from iPhoto?

By way of background I have a 20” iMac bought January 2007 which I soon plan to replace with a new 27” iMac. I expect to purchase Aperture 3 with the new iMac and to commence using it to edit my photographic images. With my  present iMac I use iPhoto for storing many thousands of digital images. My iPhoto Library is divided into many sub-libraries which I manage using iPhoto Library Manager. I currently use Photoshop Elements 6 for Mac for editing my images.
My question concerns what I should do with my present images when I obtain the new iMac. My understanding is that I can either leave them as is within iPhoto or import them into Aperture 3. I don’t have enough information to know which would be the best way to go. My initial reaction is to leave them as is because I don’t know whether the iPhoto Library Manager system is compatible with the Aperture 3 system. I would not want to import thousands of my current images into Aperture 3 and end up with a disorganized mess on my hands.
I’m hoping that somebody with applicable experience with Aperture 3 can advise me on his issue.
Bob

There's no such thing as an "iPhoto Library Manager system". They are just iPhoto Libraries and can be imported to Aperture. As to whether you should or should not? That's up to you. I strongly urge you to download the trial of Aperture from the Apple site and explore before making any decisions. There's a significant learning curve coming over from iPhoto.

If you are using a standalone version of Lightroom, you may have updated with the CC-licensed update. That will not work. If this is your situation then it will be necessary for you to uninstall Lightroom and then install an update from a different website. Assuming that you are using Lightroom 5, this is where you need to download from:
    Product updates
After you make the change you will be able to continue from where you left off. The switchover does not affect your images or your catalog.

  • Importing iPhone photos into Aperture?

Hey, I moved my iPhoto Library into Aperture and consolidated or whatever it's called, so I've made the full move I think to Aperture, since iPhoto is really bloated and I like Aperture more, so I deleted my iPhoto Library.
Now in iPhoto, it sort of made it easy for my to just plug in my iPhone and import any new photos, ignoring whatever I already imported, and it would save whatever photos I took to a corresponding date/event, and then it would also put those photos in a smart album for my iPhone.
Now I'm still new to Aperture and I want to know how can I plug in my iPhone and import new pictures into Aperture which would put it as a new event, ignoring whatever I already took because right now when I do Import it shows all the current pictures taken with my iPhone, and I only want whatever picture that hasn't already been imported, and then it would put them in my iPhone 3GS smart album (pics taken with 3GS go there).
Is there any way to do this? Aperture is a really neat program and I've already set it up with iTunes to sync the photos back to my iPhone.
Here is a screenshot of my current setup on Aperture, I'm still a bit confused on how to do everything on this so I am learning! All the help given will be very appreciated

There is a Check Box on the import panel that gives the option Do Not Import Duplicates. Ensure this is checked. Allan

  • Importing into Aperture 3 from iPhoto as referenced files

Apologies if this has been asked before, but I can't find anything this topic...
I've just upgraded to Aperture 3. In Aperture 2, my way of working was to store RAW images in iPhoto and import as referenced files into Aperture. This was very straightforward. Now, I have 2 problems:
1 - I can't see how to import referenced images from iPhoto. If I use the import command, my iPhoto images don't show up in the list of locations to import from; if I use the iPhoto browser in Aperture and drag from that, it imports the file into the Aperture library rather than importing as a referenced file...
2 - If I import using the iPhoto browser, not only does it import into the Aperture library, it imports the jpeg preview rather than the RAW file.
The only way I can see to get the RAW file into Aperture is to find it in the Finder then import into the Aperture library. This seems excessively long-winded and also duplicates the file, using up extra disk space.
    I'm using Aperture 3.0.1 and iPhoto 7.1.5
Thanks in advance for your input

I have not imported an iPhoto library because my workflow is to to use Aperture for storing and archiving Raw files and iPhoto for exported jpegs.
However the instruction in the Aperture 3 PDF Manual are as follows:-
    To import your iPhoto library
Choose File > Import > iPhoto Library.
Select the iPhoto library in the dialog that appears.
Choose a location for the imported images by doing one of the following:
    • To store imported masters in the Aperture library: Choose “In the Aperture Library” from the Store Files pop-up menu.
    • To import the files as referenced images stored in their current location on your hard disk: Choose “In their current location” from the Store Files pop-up menu.
Tip: Choosing“Intheircurrentlocation”isrecommended.Whenyouchoosethisoption, Aperture refers to the original files in their current location and does not have to duplicate the files, which doubles the disk space needed to store the files. For more information about referenced images, see What Are Managed Images and Referenced Images?
    • To store imported masters as referenced images in the Pictures folder on your hard disk: Choose Pictures from the Store Files pop-up menu.
    • To store imported masters as referenced images in a location other than the Pictures folder: Choose “Choose” from the Store Files pop-up menu and select a folder. Choose “No folder” from the Subfolders pop-up menu to specify that the files be stored as separate, individual files in the selected folder. You can also specify that Aperture create a hierarchy of subfolders with specific folder names to hold your files.

  • When importing iPad photos into Aperture, I cannot import into an existing album, only create a new project.

I dont want to create a new project for every group of photos being brought over from my iPad. My iPhone worked perfectly. I was able to choose which project/album I could import into, why would the iPad, running the same iOS, be any different?

    Hi Dave,
Welcome to the user-support Aperture discussion forum.
You would probably benefit from reading Kirby's introduction: [http://discussions.apple.com/messageview.jspa?messageID=13124533&stqc=true]
Is there any way to simply import photos into those albums without having to create all of those annoying projects?
That's a loaded question. It's not "yes or no" according to exactly how you asked it.
You do not have to create a new project for each import, but every picture lives in exactly 1 project. You can then point to any photo from any number of albums. You cannot put a photo directly into an album because an album does not contain photos, it only contains "pointers" to photos.
So, you, as the user, have the ability to put your imports into an existing project. Why are you creating a new project every time?

  • HT202786 how do I import a photo into Photoshop elements from Photos

I am using Photoshop Elements with templates and photo editing and it no longer gives me the option in preferences to export to Elements in photo like there was in iPhoto.  Any ideas on what to do

    Cathy,
Your question is not remotely a Color Management issue, so this is the wrong forum  Consider posting in the InDesign or Ps Elements forum.
It looks like you need help understanding some very elementary application-specific basics.

  • Suddenly can't import any photos into iPhoto!

Suddenly and inexplicably, I cant import any photos into my iPhoto program. iPhoto has worked fine for years. Now, all of a sudden, no matter how I try to import them (either from my desktop, or from my digital camera), I get the error message: Couldn't create: /Volumes/name of external drive/iPhoto Library/2006/08/21/name of photo. When I click "OK" on the error message dialogue box, I then get the error message "Unreadable files: 1 The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data)." I am reasonably certain that of the 250 or so J-Peg photos I'm presently trying to import, from 2 different cameras, ALL of them can't be corrupt.
First, I tried repairing my disk permissions on my G4. Then, I tried reinstalling iLife 5.0.2. Then I tried reinstalling the OSX 10.3.9 combo pack, and iPhoto 5.0.4. Then I tried again repairing my disk permissions with disk utility. All proved useless to solve the problem.
I also tried dragging my iPhoto preferences to the trash. But I found to my horror that this action completely obliterates all of my iPhoto albums and photo groupings. I did not attempt to import any new photos once I discovered this, as I was fearful doing so might render my loss of my albums permanent. So I retrieved my old preferences from the trash, thus saving my albums and groupings, but also keeping the original importing problem.
What can I do to fix this importing problem without obliterating my albums and groupings? Lots of work has gone into the grouping and categorizing of my albums and photos. Though it would be easy to reimport all of my photos, I would not want to begin to take the time to recreate all of my albums and groupings from scratch. Is there any way these groupings can be preserved? If not, there should be! It's idiotic to think that Apple might not consider all of the time the grouping of albums and songlists represents to the typical user of iPhoto or iTunes.
Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. Cheers!

I've found a solution to this problem, thankfully. But it didn't come via rebuilding the iPhoto library.
I didn't want to to a manual rebuild of my original iPhoto library, since I was cautioned that it would involve losing my albums and all notations and filings I'd made concerning my photos. Before I first tinkered with the library, I made a backup copy of the original-defective library onto another external drive. Then I did one more complete "automatic rebuild" of the original/defective library, and found to my horror that the library wouldn't even open any more. It would send up an error message when I'd try to click on it's icon to open the library.
I went back to the backup copy of my iPhoto library (containing all of my albums, groupings, and etc.) and did what I hadn't thought to do in the first place: I simply attempted to import photos (my original difficulty) into this backup iPhoto library. It worked perfectly!!! All photos imported into this backed up copy as if it were the original. And now that I have trashed my "original" and totally defective former iPhoto library, this backup copy is now my new iPhoto library.
I guess whatever was wrong with the old library was shaken out just by making a backup copy. I'm afraid that's about as technical an explanation as I can offer. But maybe doing the same process will help another of you suffering from a similar problem with importing photos. Anyway, a hearty thanks to everyone who responded to this original query of mine. Mac users are truly the best!!! Cheers!

  • Photo preview blank when browsing Aperture Library from iPhoto

    Hello to everyone,
I need to import in iPhoto some photo of my Aperture's Library, but when I open it from iPhoto I can see all the pictures exept the lastest that I've imported in the Aperture Library (that have been taken with a Canon EOS 550D with RAW format): I see a blank icon (that can I select and import in my iPhoto library) instead its preview.
In Aperture the Canon EOS 550D RAW format works correctly, but I can't see the preview of the image in the browser under iPhoto.
Can anyone help me solving this problem?
I have Snow Leopard 10.6.7 (with all the updates) and the lastest versione of both iPhoto and Aperture.
    Thanks.
    Andrea

    Hi Terence,
thanks for the reply, but I've already regenerated all my previous (the entire library), but with no success.. I still continue to see a blank icon browsing the Aperture Library from iPhoto.
But I see that each time I enter in Aperture, it alway restart processing library (but only for some photos).. when it finish that process, I close Aperture and when I enter in it again, it restart processing the same photos.. again and again and again
    Any other suggestion?
    Regards.

  • How do I import old photos into new iPhoto library?

I have a new macbook pro running iphoto 11.  I am trying to import my photos onto the new computer from my old computer, running iphoto 8.  I mounted the old computer as a hard disk, but when I go to import the photos into new iphoto library on the new computer, the old iphoto library is "grayed" out under the users/pictures/iphoto location.
How do I transfer the photos?

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

  • Problem with importing scanned photos into iPhoto

I have an Epson scanner that scans photos into the JPEG format. However, when I try to import these photos into iPhoto I am told that the file format is incompatible with iPhoto. This is odd since photos in iPhoto ARE in JPEG format.
    Can anybody help?
Many thanks in advance for any assistance.
    Sir Leicester

Did you scan these photos as grayscale b/w photos? If so that's the reason. iPhoto does not support the grayscale mode when it has the *+Dot Gain 20%+* profile added to it and that's what scanners use.
Rescan all b/w images as color and they will be accepted by iPhoto. Or you can download the Automator workflow application, Convert to JPG and Embed sRGB profile, from Toad's Cellar and drop the files onto the application. This will batch convert them to jpegs in the RGB mode with the sRGB IEC61966-2.1 color profile.

Do your images show, if you disable the option "Do not import duplicates"? If yes, then check, if the images have already been imported, eg. using Photo Stream, if you are using Aperture 3.3 or later.

  • Unable to import photos into Lightroom 5 from anywhere.

I am running the CC version of LIghtroom 5 on a macbook with OSX 10.7.5.  I upgraded to lightroom 5 and have not been able to import any photos into Lightroom.  Every folder that I click on in the import dialogue looks empty.  I have tried from the WD external hard drive that I store my photos on and directly from the desktop.  It doesn't recognize photos anywhere.  I've unchecked the "hide suspected duplicates" box and that doesn't make a difference.  It's like LIghtroom thinks they don't exist.  Help?!

    Hi,
can you please post screenshot of the import dialog when it fails? Do you crate a subfolder in target folder? You use file rename, apply preset, set metadata during import. Try to deactive these. (May be some corrupt / missing data).
