Import .m2v files - Question for experts - this is an interesting one

I have an internal and external harddrive.
I have copied an .m2v file from my external harddrive to my internal harddrive, then i switch off the external drive.
I load the .m2v file in Encore and as many others have experienced the slidebar goes to 99 % then returns to 90 % and basically loops the whole time.
HOWEVER ... when I switch my external harddisk on suddenly it loads the .m2v file, even though i specified to load the file from my internal harddrive. As soon as i turn off the external drive all the previe pics are gone, and i am left with a black video (background with language text). It's to do with linking, but I have not solved the problem.

The external HDD was switch off at the time.
Encore is part of the Production Bundle, which is a legitimate copy/original.
Something funny besides the issue of the external harddrive.
I have just created a simple file via PP2 Adobe Media Encoder (DVD compliant) => only a short avi film into the timeline of PP2 and added a title, thats it. The external HD was switched off. The created file sits in the internal drive. I cannot load it in Encore and it hangs during loading, but as soon as I start the external harddrive it loads, this is strange. help help ..

    Hi
The value of the Channel Strip volume etc is not stored within the C Strip setting, as you have discovered.
If you really wanted, you could add a Gain plug to the strip, with it set to give the correct output level with the Fader set to 0
(Or just set the fader manually in MS)

    Hi,
that's because Logic reads the volume information out of the imported MIDI tracks and sets the volume fader according to this information. The MIDI information overrides volume settings you have done, so you have to identify the MIDI events that contain volume (or expression or pan or whatever) information and delete them. You can use the event list editor for this.

  • DVDSP 3 Crashes importing m2v files

Hi, I´ve been trying to finish a project on DVDSP3 for 5 days now. Always the same problem. I´ve encoded a FCP rendered sequence to m2v file using compressor. The process was sucessful!. The thing is when I try to import the file into DVDSP using Palette crashes automatically. I started trying other ways of importing and the same thing over and over again. I´ve tried to open the file on Quicktime and works perfectly, the preview works fine on finder. Everything seems to be in order. But when dragging the file into the timeline the program crashes. Sometimes also crashes when I open the program. I´ve repaired the disk permissions, downloaded the proapp update and installed it again.... nothing. Tried also re-installing the DVDSP and nothing. I tried importing the m2v file as an asset and the file appears on the list but when dragging it to the timeline, guess what?: crashes again. Finally I took the FCP project and compressed it again, thought maybe the other file was corrupted. Everything was fine until I tried dragging the file to the timeline when DVDSP crashed again... sorry but i´m f@*ing tired of this. CAN ANYONE HELP!!!!!!!...
Like i said before it´s been my 5th day in a row and nothing seems to work... Any help will be great!
Sorry for the long text but I tried to explain my process in detail so proper help can be found...
    Thanks in advance...
PS: have noticed that every topic with this kind of problem never got an answer...
very dissapointed with DVDSP... will not recommend to no-one...

Hi Sebakd, welcome to the discussions.
Download and install the proapplication support file from Apple...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/proapplicationsupport31macosx104.html
If that doesn't fix it, come back and let us know - there will be a simple reason for the issue.
In 9/10 cases the proapp support file fixes the problem, and in the vast majority of the posts citing this issue that fix is recommended in the replies for all to see.

  • Importing m2v-file: Error loading transcode preset

    Dear all,
Just have Encore 1.51 a few weeks now (eBay). But sofar I couldn't get a project together. Only problems when importing (good) m2v files. Also on the forum almost no solutions.
Once again I have an Error loading transcode preset. I just made a DVD from a video on my DVD recorder, demuxed it on my computer, but can't import it :((
I also have posted 2 previous topics concerning my other problems with Encore, but sofar nobody has an answer. I just want to have working software.
Can anyone really help. Otherwise it's wiser to sell this software.
    Han Bouman

    >Resolution: 704*576
Although Encore will accept 704x576 it will always re-transcode it to 720x576. That shouldn't be the reason for the "abnormal condition" error however.
Maybe Neil's suggestion of a DVD-Video illegal GOP structure applies.
You could do some more testing with
    MPEG Validator
. Are any of the GOPs larger than 15 frames? Does MPEG Validator report anything it doesn't like?

DVD Studio Pro 4.0.3 will import old m2v files that I created a couple years ago using DVD Studio Pro 2 - and any new audio files created with Compressor and quicktime files from Final Cut Pro 5.
I have 1.5 GB of RAM...my drives are not too full...this was all working fine until recently and I can't see what has changed.

  • DVD SP 4 crashes importing M2V files

I've recently upraded to Tiger and Final Cut Studio from FCP HD and DVD SP3. Everything seemed to be working more or less fine before the upgrade. Once I updated the whole system, including the latest internet updates, I opened my DVD SP3 project and converted it to a DVDSP4 project. At this point, DVD SP4 started working funny, like crashing everytime I tried to open its preferences window, and I had to force quit. I reinstalled the application, but nothing changes. Now, I can't access any assets in the assets folders. They're invisible, and when I open the folders they are in the app crashes. It crashes also when I try to reimport any of the old m2v files created by the former version of compressor and used under DVDSP3. What should I do at this point? I need to continue working on this project and I've already created tons of subtitles for this track and need to update it with new m2v media, which the program won't import or see... Anyone know what I should be doing?
    Thanks in advance.
    Fernanda

I took both of your suggestions.
As it turns out, my M2V files did have messed up "open with preferences," and I followed the instructions to reassign quicktime as the default app for all M2V files, but this repair described in the thread you pointed did not fix the DVDSP crash problem. It still crashes whenever I try to import or view M2V files in the program... I'm still unable to edit my DVDSP project!
    Any more thoughts?
By the way, are the preferences just one com.apple files in the user's prefs' folder? If so, I have already trashed it as well...

  • DVDSP 3 Not Importing m2v file, Unexpectedley Quits

I'm experiencing a very consistent quit, and I'm looking for a work around.
In trying to import an asset, I've created a reference movie file, and in the same folder placed the two compressed pieces that I'm trying to import (.aiff and .m2v). I can import the audio, but not the video. I can't even select it to trash it.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi Hal,
    Thanks for responding.
I downloaded and installed the latest proapp support file, as you suggested, and I tried opeing the file in QT (Pro). What's really curious to me is the behavior of the .m2v file. The only way I can trash it is by selecting it either with a set of files in the same folder, or by trashing the whole folder. Just selecting it by itself in the Finder causes the Finder window to go away. Selecting the file in DVDSP 3 causes an immediate quit. Same thing with trying to open it in QT.
My workflow has been FCP (4.5) sequence Export, QT movie (reference) > Compressor (60 min High Quality Encode) > DVDSP 3 Import... As I've said, I can import audio, no problem (.aiff). Bringing in the .m2v has been impossible, so far. Each time I select the file, the application (DVDSP 3) quits.

  • Activity monitor question for experts.

When I open activity monitor it is constantly changing. I have safari open, but it is there and then it isn't and then it is in activity monitor. How do I read this and is that normal?

In order to help people, they should understand the purpose of these boards.
Had you read the OP's post, you would see that his Activity Monitor is working and his question was simply why Safari appears and disappears from the AM window.
Your issue is entirely different and that is why I suggested starting a new thread with your particular problem/issue which has nothing to do with Safari in the Activity Monitor.
Perhaps the term "hijacking a thread" seems rash to you, but it is a common expression with no personal attachment to it. It merely means that someone has used another poster's thread to pose a completely different topic.
To best get help on this or any technical board, first search for instances of your particular issue, which may have already been solved, and if you do not find such a topic, start a new thread with the Subject describing your issue.
Once people start responding to other posts in a thread, nobody any longer knows who is answering whom.
It is always preferable to start a new topic if you want a quick solution to a problem, rather than bury it in another person's thread. It's called "Netiquette" and it is not my invention. It's been around as long as the net has been around AFAIK.

  • Importing m2v files into 09

I created a movie in FCP7---I exported it to compressor. It then created an m2v file.
I now want to import that m2v into iMovie09 but it will not appear.
When I click on the folder iMovie hangs up and crashes. Nothing appears in the folder and i know it is there.

    Yes.
Just a reminder that the m2v is an elementary stream – video only. If you need it muxed with audio, it can be done in DVD SP or in MPEG Streamclip.

  • Question for experts: SVG vs GIF

    Hello everyone
Lets say I have a website that is populated with multiple simple and complex, plain white icons. These icons will be resized in muse where needed, sometimes they will be with reduced opacity. The website is heavy on parallax scrolling and fading (opacity), and most – if not all – of the icons will be using one or both scrolling effects.
Exporting them from illustrator the GIFs are sometimes smaller in size than the SVGs.
The target audience is expected to have decent and updated computers e.g. IE 8 and below not relevant. let us suppose all users have Browsers capable of handling SVGs, and parallax.
What is better or easier for the browser? SVGs of GIFs? even if the size of the GIFs is smaller?
is rendering somewhat complex SVGs (many anchor points) "harder" than GIFs?
Any reason to not prefer SVGs except for backwards compatibility with older browsers/machines?
What would be best practice here?
    Any advice/discussion/opinion greatly appreciated.
    Jorge Vallejo

First, GIF should be avoided in favour of PNG: a well optimized PNG is always smaller in file size and also offers more quality options (for example more than 256 colours that GIF allows for). The trouble is that Adobe products cannot achieve this without jumping through a LOT of hoops. More about that below.
Here is a bitmap - SVG performance comparison:
    1) SVG files must be drawn & rendered in the browser. That means the xml data must be read, interpreted, and displayed - which is far slower than a bitmap. A png still has to be decompressed, which does not take up a lot of processing power. Rendering a SVG is far slower (incomparably slower depending on the complexity).
    2) bitmaps are generally hardware accelerated (via the GPU), a number of svg operations are not. For example, I believe css transforms for SVG is not hardware accelerated, and thus very slow to animate through that method.
    3) somewhat older browsers have trouble rendering many individual SVG objects. For example, only in March 2014 was this issue resolved in Firefox.
    4) svg performance is highly dependent on the specific browser as well. Take this test:
    http://jsperf.com/d3-svg-opacity
It runs fastest on Opera and IE 11 on my system! Firefox is dreadfully slow.
    5) SVG rendering is far slower on mobile platforms. Unless very simple ones, convert to png files.
Now, as to your files: an SVG sized at 500kb is a LOT - and then you mention you will have more SVG files ranging from less then 100kb up to more than 200kb. My question would be what type of graphics these will be in your page: background graphics, icons, ...?
Besides, SVG images produced by Illustrator can (should) be optimized. A good tool for that is SVGO: svg/svgo · GitHub a visual version can be downloaded at svg/svgo-gui · GitHub
    Some must-read articles:
    http://css-tricks.com/using-svg/
    http://jaydenseric.com/blog/how-to-optimize-svg
    http://kylefoster.me/svg-slides/#/
If you are doing a lot of animation, and there are a lot of other things going on in a page, then PNG is the way to go. SVG is best for simpler logo graphics and icons. Game developers using Flash also always convert all their vector files to bitmaps for much improved performance in Flash!
Now to my second point: Adobe's Save for Web function is abysmal for png optimization. Yes, there are techniques in Photoshop to improve the optimization of PNG images, but it takes a lot of effort:
    http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2009/07/15/clever-png-optimization-techniques/
PNG Optimization Guide: More Clever Techniques - Smashing Magazine
And even after all this work, you still cannot export a PNG with a limited colour palette with full transparency in either Photoshop or Illustrator. This is important for file sizes: especially Muse websites tend to be so bloated that they take a long time to load up - and there is really no reason for this if you optimize your graphics properly.
To optimize any PNG file, use Colour Quantizer:
    Color quantizer
I cannot live without this little (freeware) tool anymore - it is worth booting your mac in Windows mode just to use CQ to optimize your png files. It automatically takes care of optimizing your png files, reducing them to the absolute minimum - compared to Photoshop's standard Save for Web disaster, file sizes are at least 50% smaller in file size or more. And it includes a very simple to use quality mask brush that allows you to control/fix areas which may be troublesome when reducing the number of colours.
Having said that, it really depends on the type of graphics you are intending to place in your layout. Could you post some examples?

  • Oracle Block Size - question for experts

    Hi ,
For years i thought that my system block size was 8K.
Lately due to an HPUX Bug i found that the file system block size is gust .... 1K
(HP DocId: DCLKBRC00006913 fstyp(1m) returns unexpected block size (f_bsize) for VXFS )
    My instance is currently 10204 but previously was 7.3 --> 8 --> 8174 --> 10204.
Since its old instance its block size is gust 4kb.
We are planing to create new file system block size of 8k.
The instance size is about 2 TB.
Creating the whole database with 8 kb is impossible since its 24*7 instance.
Do you think that i sould move gust few important tables to a new tablespace with 8k block size , or should i leave it with 4 kb ?
    Thanks

Given that your Oracle Database Block_Size (4K) is a multiple of the FileSystem Block_Size (1K), there should be no inherent significant issue, as such.
Yes, it would have been nice to have an 8KB Oracle Database Block_Size but whether you should recreate your FileSystems to 8KB is a difficult question. There would be implications on PreFetch that the OS does and on how the underlying Storage (must be a SAN, I presume) handles those requests.
A thorough test (if you can setup a test environment for 2TB such that it does NOT share the same HW, doesn't complicate PreFetches in the existing SAN) would be well adviced.
Else, check with HP and Veritas support if there are known issues and/or any Desupport plans for this combination ?!
Oracle, obviously, would have issues with Index Key Length sizes if the Block Size is 4KB. Presumably you do not need to add any new indexes with very large keys.
Having said that, you would have read all those posts about how Oracle doesn't (or really does ?) test every different block-size ! However, Oracle had, before 8i, been using 2K and 4K block sizes. Except that the new features (LMT, ASSM etc) may not have been well tested.
Since you upgraded from 7.3 in place without changing the Block_Size, I would venture to say that your database is still using Dictionary Managed and Manual Allocation and Segment Space Management Manual ?

  • Question for Experts / Instructors

    Hi,
I have a minor dilemma on my hands. Working as a professional in the photographic and post-production fields, and I've been tasked with providing some instruction (across 2 or 3 apps) for a small group of clients (or clients of a friend I should say). These folks are definitely not computer illiterate, but they're also not well-versed with more complex programs like Photoshop, Motion, etc.
Sadly I don't have an opportunity to sit down with some or all of them ahead of time and find out what they want.
Their goal is to get to a basic functional level, without paying $$$$ each for multiple learning center type classes. My goal is to find out the methods you guys feel work the best when bringing someone else up to speed on a complex piece of software.
Do people like the core of their learning to be with books, video, instruction, or a combination? And what type of books or video work best for that matter?
Any opinions on: a)single task lessons with sample files (where the learner duplicates everything being done after they've seen it); b) multiple example lessons (where they follow along, but don't duplicate - they learn by seeing the same tools used for multiple tasks); or c) reference-based learning, where you basically act as a human encyclopedia (whether you write it, record the screen with narration or do it on stage).
My research thus far indicates most people who are comfortable with operating systems and things like MS Office, are likely to try and learn with books. Basically they buy the most comprehensive or well-reviewed book they can find and keep it at their side as they try to work through the software. However this can't substitute for the task I've been given, only supplement it. Either way I need to recommend the best type of book for their purposes, after I'm gone.
Some possible approaches for me: Keynote presentations where functions are outlined and explained, and screenshots used; Live demonstrations for each task; Basic introduction to as many important functions as I can cram in there, how they're accessed, and then send them off with a book or video recommendation to continue learning; Straight Q&A (IOW, let them decide what they need to learn quickest and ask about it, then I try to demo something).
I'm a little afraid of that last task because there won't be time to prepare a demo for every possible function they might throw at me. At the same time it would be the most direct way to find out where they're stuck, skipping the other items I might assume are important but which they don't need or don't care about.
I've only got 1 day with them, maybe a day and a half if I can swing it / they can schedule it. What are your recommendations for teaching people at this level? Which types of materials or progression helps people retain stuff the best? Thank you for any insights or suggestions you might have....

    Heya,
I think DiffKid is referring to a combination of active and passive methods. Books and videos are both passive, so by themselves they may not hold a person's attention. Demoing/lecturing will directly engage people, but they eventually tire of the direct contact and being forced to move at someone else's pace.
Start broadly and then get more granular. I would recommend a flashy, shiny-object demo of an app that piques their interest. "You, too, can make really cool stuff like you see on TV! Marvel at my casual display of power!" Don't spend time on details. Focus, instead, on an overall feeling for layout and workflow, i.e. drawing is done here, fine adjustments are done here, etc.
If you get them excited, they will be self-starting. At that point you have to tailor it to their personalities: some people will want a step-by-step tutorial (books, videos) to follow to a precise, finished result. Some will want to mess around and see what they come up with, and others will want more personal direction.
Just don't start with anything dry. If you throw them into the deep end with a bunch of technical details, they will get bored and stop learning. Entice them, make them feel empowered, then turn them loose.
