Import Mailbox Missing Some Messages

Hi,
I am trying to move my local mailboxes in Mail from a Macbook Pro with OSX 10.5 to a Macbook Pro with OSX 10.7.  I backed up each mailbox on the old computer using Mailbox > Archive Mailbox within Mail.  I then copied those files from the old computer to the new computer.  On the new computer, I imported each mailbox using File > Import Mailboxes within Mail.
Unfortunately, several of the mailboxes on the new computer don't have all of the original messages.  For example, one mailbox that has about 2000 messages on the old computer now has only about 1500 messages on the new computer.
Can anyone tell me why this happening and how to fix it?
Thanks for any help!

Thanks!  This helped, but not fully.
On the old computer, I rebuilt each of the mailboxes that hadn't imported correctly.  I then archived those mailboxes, copied to the new computer, and imported in Mail.  More of the missing messages are now there, but not all.
For example, one mailbox had 5481 messages on the old computer.  When I first moved it to the new computer, it only had 1693 messages.  Once I went back and rebuilt, then archived, copied, and imported again, it now has 4129 messages on the new computer.  But there are still about 1300 messages missing.
I also tried rebuilding the mailboxes once they had been imported on the new computer, but that didn't change anything.
Is there another use of Rebuild that I'm missing?

  • ICould "Notes" missing some messages

    Hi all,
I lost my iphone and got a new one, but when recovering the data I have some messages in iCloud Notes missing. I know they must be in the iCloud store somewhere end of last year, is there some Special backup that Apple could access for me to retrieve the data if I contact them directly? I only seem to have the last backup with many things missing, probably due to compatibility issues because I previously had an iphone 4 now an iphone 5.
    Help would be much appreciated.
    Cheers, Raefe

You're welcome.  What I was discussing is the fact that when you restore a backup, any synced data that is recovered is subsequently overwritten (and lost) when your device reconnects to your iCloud account during the second phase of the restore process.  Winston's method interrupts the restore process after the synced data is restored but before it is subsequently overwritten.  It will not allow an older backup (beyond the three available) to become accessible; backups older than your most recent three are no longer in iCloud and cannot be recovered.
If the notes you are trying to restore were on your device at the time of your oldest backup, it may be possible to recover them by following Winston's method.  You may have already restored this backup and found that the notes were not restored, and then concluded that they were not contained in the backup when in fact what happened is that although they were restored, they were then overwritten (and deleted) prior to the restore process finishing.  You might want to try restoring the backup again following Winston's approach to see if that is the case.  (BTW, all you have to do is prevent your device from connecting to the internet after it restarts.  This can be done by pulling the wire from the WAN port at the backup of the router, by simply unplugging the router, or by putting your device in airplane mode.)

  • Imported mailboxes have internal Messages folders and I cannot drag-and-drop to them

I have just been forced to upgrade to a new MB Pro due to liquid damage to my old Macbook Pro.  As I am now using Mountain Lion I have had all manner of reconfigure problems with importing the (undamaged) data from my old hard drive.. When I open Mailboxes, there is an internal Messages folder which needs opening in turn.. Some of the Mailboxes have  messages in both parts.  I also seem to be blocked from drag-and-drop to move mail to my boxes.. I've read all over here but cannot find this mentioned.. Should I re-install a clean version, and if so, how do I retain the last 4 days of emails.. My Sent box is utterly screwed, too

When you see something like this in the sidebar, it means there are other folders within that folder:
The little triangle on the left is the clue.
Click on the traingle and you can see what is inside, Here there is one folder inside:
Now if you want you can drag the second folder and drop it anywhere inside the sidebar:
So that instead of one folder with a triangle to show it contains other folders, I have two separate folders.
You can also go in the other direction, and drop a folder into another one. As many as you want.

  • Why are some messages marked as duplicates in Mail?

I added my Yahoo! account to Mail but there is a problem with the Sent mailbox. Some messages (as many as 22 at a time) are being marked as duplicates of each other even though they have absolutely nothing in common (other than the sender). I've already tried rebuilding the mailbox; but it produces the exact same result. Any ideas?

So - check how they are labeled in the iPod. I went back to my iTunes library and there is only one version of that album in the computer. Haven't figured out how to bring it to ONE on the iPod, though.

This is a bug in Mail. The mailbox archiving function does not include attachments, which  gives the error with the import. To workaround this you can create a mailbox in Mail and copy to it all emails you want to export. Then go in Finder to [user]/Library/Mail/Mailboxes en select the created mailbox. Copy this to the public directory of your other mac. Then start Mail on that other mac and import the mailbox from the public directory. Should work now.

  • Importing Windows Outlook 2007 email to Mac Mail using Thunderbird Workaround Looses Some Messages

After being away from using a Mac for 5 years I'm back with an iMac.
I found this workaround to import Outook 2007 emails to Mac Mail using Thunderbird on the PC http://www.trickyways.com/2010/08/how-to-transfer-emails-from-outlook-to-apple-m ail/
On the PC Thunderbird imports all my Outlook messages correctly and all are there.
Then when I import the resulting Thunderbird mailboxes to Mac Mail some messages are being lost. The directory structure for my mail folders imports correctly, just that some messages are missing.
There are earlier posts here saying Eudora Mailbox Cleaner worked for people but this wont run on Mountain Lion.
So has anybody got any ideas on how the get  all my Outlook e-mails to the Mac without losing anything?
What about software like Outlook2Mac, does it work fully or will I still have the same issue of some lost mail?
Can't believe I am having this problem migrating Window to Mac, you'd think it would work perfectly and not put people off from switching.
    Cheers.

Okay I slept on it and had a brain wave.
I set up iCloud Mail on Outlook 2007. Then copy messages from my Outlook Inbox to iCloud Inbox.
On the Mac copy the messages from iCloud Inbox to a folder On My Mac so they never get lost if I delete the iCloud account.
Playing about with it and it seems to work fine. Any reason why it could cause issues?
I love it when a workaround comes together!

  • Importing mailboxes (upgrade to 10.4) hangs on same message every time

I have upgraded system to 10.4.10. Opening mail for first time, I am invited to import mailboxes. Every time, it hangs on message "14,589 of 15,233". It must be a corrupt message. When I was in 10.3, it hung my mail program every time I opened my "sent" mailbox and started indexing, hanging when it reached the same message.
I narrowed down what messages it probably was, but unfortunately, when I opened the sent folder to delete, it always hung, and I always had to force quit, hence not saving my delete actions.
perhaps I can at least import the other mailboxes if I move the sent folder and complete the import process without it. anyone know where to find the old mailbox files? they do not appear in library/mail, probably because I have not succeeded in importing them from 10.3.
and any way to open these files outside of mail and remove a message without opening mail?
    thanks for any help

If you already had problems when running Mac OS X 10.3, you should have fixed them before upgrading. The conversion from Mail 1.x to Mail 2.x is broken even for mailboxes that can be accessed without a hitch in Mac OS X 10.3. In your case, upgrading could only make things worse...
Here’s an example of the most common variant of this problem and how to proceed in those cases:
Just upgraded, Most of my old Inbox is gone!
Your problem, however, is different in that you don’t even get past an incomplete conversion. If Mail stalls during the conversion process, you may try to identify the mailboxes that Mail is choking on, quit Mail, move those mailboxes out of ~/Library/Mail/ (e.g. to the Destkop), and trash any Envelope Index-named files you may see in ~/Library/Mail/, so that Mail re-creates the index and tries to import the remaining mailboxes again, then manually import the problematic mailboxes as Other.
    <hr>
Alternatively, you may want to set up Mail from scratch and manually import your mail back afterwards. This would allow you to use Mail normally while solving the problem of importing the old mail as you see fit:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/. Move (not copy) the entire Mail folder out of there, to the Desktop.
    3. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences/. Locate com.apple.mail.plist and move it to the Desktop.
    4. Open Mail and set it up again from scratch. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don’t. Just enter the account information and check that everything works fine.
    5. You’ll have to re-configure all your settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled.
    6. Do File > Import Mailboxes and follow the instructions to import your mail from the old Mail folder that’s now on the Desktop. Import the Mailboxes folder first, then each of the POP-username@mailserver account folders, if any.
There are two ways to import Mail 1.x mailboxes into Mail 2.x. The obvious one is importing them as Mail for Mac OS X. But Mail 1.x stored mail in standard mbox format plus some additional support files, and this allows Mail 1.x mailboxes to also be imported as Other, i.e. as generic mailboxes in standard mbox format.
Importing as Mail for Mac OS X produces the best results when it works, because it takes into consideration all the files in the mailboxes, not just the mbox files where the messages are stored, and hence, allows information such as status flags to be preserved. Importing as Other, on the other hand, may work in cases where importing as Mail for Mac OS X doesn’t, because it looks at the mbox files only, ignoring the support files which is what Mail 2.x usually chokes on, but precisely because of that, information such as status flags is lost and previously deleted messages may reappear.
Hence, you may try importing as much as you can as Mail for Mac OS X, then import the problematic mailboxes as Other.
Note that what Mail asks for when importing depends on the format chosen. Mail always asks for the folder that contains the “things” to be imported. If Mail for Mac OS X is chosen as the data format, the “things” to be imported are the .mbox folders, so you must choose the folder that contains them, not the .mbox folders themselves. On the other hand, if Other is chosen as the data format, the “things” to be imported are the mbox files, so you must choose the .mbox folders that contain them in that case.
Note also that some of the mailboxes now on the Desktop may have already been partially converted to the new .emlx format during the previous (failed) attempt to convert them in place. If you tell Mail 2.x to import as Mail for Mac OS X a mailbox that already has a Messages folder, Mail will simply ignore the Mail 1.x files present there. If the mailbox was successfully converted to the new format, that’s fine, but if the conversion was incomplete, that’s not what you want.
As a result of doing all the above, some messages may be duplicated. Andreas Amann’s Mail Scripts has a Remove Duplicates script that you may find useful.
If all is well and you don’t miss anything, the files on the Desktop can be deleted, although you may want to keep them for a while, just in case.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.

  • Import from Eudora - no messages in mailboxes

Having used Eudora for too many years, I now have a real mess in the references to attachments. Many of the attachments are no longer accessible from the messages that they arrived in, even though they are still in the attachments folder.
I thought I would try to clean up some of this mess by having Mail import the old mail from Eudora.
I kicked off Mail to import my Eudora mail, all 700MB of it (mainly attachments). 20 minutes later, it had finished. All the mailboxes were there. But there were no messages in them. Not-a-one! When I looked at the mailbox files, they were all very short. There were some attachments, but only 96MB of them.
I tried quitting and restarting Mail, rebooting the machine, and telling Mail to rebuild the mailboxes. Still no messages.
Does anyone have any idea what may have happened?
    Cheers
    David

    David,
the Eudora import of Mail has some serious shortcomings (like taking 20 minutes...) - you might want ot consider re-importing your Eudora mail using Eudora Mailbox Cleaner - it should give you much better results (the imported mailboxes initially will appear empty as well but rebuilding them should solve this issue - I guess you should try that first)

  • Lion Mail search: 'All' search missing some mailboxes - anyone seen this?

Yet another Mail search issue in Lion - at least I have not seen this one documented before.
Noticed in searching Mail after move from Snow Leopard to Lion: a search on 'All' mailboxes misses items that are present in one particular (very large) mailbox, although a search on that mailbox alone finds them.  Because we have two Macs, one already migrated to Lion, the other still with Snow Leopard, we can see that a search in SN finds everything whereas the Lion search does not.
But there's more: a possible explanation occurred to us: the 'missing' mailbox was titled "INBOX"  (some levels down - comes from an Entourage archive).  Renamed that OLD INBOX, and results started coming up (with 'All' mailboxes selected) including its contents.
However: changing the search string to different senders produced inconsistent results.  Use one name, that person's incoming mail in that folder showed up with search set to 'All'.  Change to another sender, still no results from that mailbox, even tho' (as ever) the messages showed up when the search was restricted to that mailbox.
    All very confusing!
    What's going on?
    Thanks.

    Seems to work here ok:

  • Translated wire message missing some values

    Hi,
I am enqueuing an EDIFACT xml to B2B out queue (IP_OUT_QUEUE) which is getting converted to wire message and delivered correctly. But the translated wire message is missing some values:

In wire message, 'UNH+1+ORDERS' - this portion is not having values of Element-0052, Element-0054 and Element-0051. Why are this values ('D','07B','UN') missing in the translated wire message?

    Hi Siddhesh,
Check your ecs file. Possibly you have not defined these params in ecs file.
Enable the validation then you will come to know exact issue.

  • Missing some error messages from the error stack

    Hi all,
We use some PL/SQL code to load data in to the database.
One value was to large for a column.
I got the errors below, but there are some messages missing from the alert file and from the trace file.
    Error messages:
ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error
ORA-01401: inserted value too large for column
That's it, noting else. I can't see anything else in the alert log either.
    No trace files either.
Can someone please explain to me why am i missing the rest of the error stack, like the column name where the issue occurs?
    Thanks.

    Peter,
No your code won't work the same in 10g as it would in 9i and earlier. The -1401 exception is not secretly catching -12899 now. So that means it could be an upgrade issue: you'd have to manually change the code when upgrading to 10.
Here is a little test on 10.2.0.1:
    SQL> create table t

    Hi Cliff,
I haven't tried this on 10.6.x yet, so not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems in 10.4.x/10.5.x...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup),  it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move this folder & file to the Desktop.
