"Import Mailboxes" can't see IMAP inbox in backup Mail folder

So, a friend of mine thought he'd be efficient and, via the webmail interface, deleted all the messages in the Inboxes of two IMAP accounts (hosted by Fatcow). He did not understand that this would delete all the messages in the inboxes on his computer, too. He understands IMAP better now that we've had a talk!*
We have a backup copy of his ~Library/Mail folder, and I thought it would be a piece of cake to use Import Mailboxes to reimport those missing messages back into Mail, from where he could drag them back into the Inboxes in the cloud. Being a Mac consultant, I have done this very thing many times.
However, no matter what we do, the Import Mailboxes dialog will not offer those two inboxes in the list of mailboxes to choose from. We see all the other boxes, including two inactive POP accounts. When we look inside the backup Mail folder in the Finder, we can open the IMAP folder for each account and burrow down to the actual messages. The hierarchy there is kind of too deep, perhaps because the IMAP Path Prefix in his account preferences is incorrect--one of the accounts has the final Inbox with the messages inside another Inbox folder inside the IMAP account folder**. This is the only reason I can think of that Import Mailboxes would not be able to see those inboxes. Does anyone know if it would work if I moved the final Inbox folder higher up in the hierarchy?
Thanks very much for any assistance.
*Please don't ask why he wasn't using Time Machine. He will be, very soon.
**I can't reproduce it exactly here because I was working with him over a LogMeIn connection, as he's in another state. Geographically speaking, not emotionally.

in finder rename the backup imap inbox from INBOX.imapmbox to INBOX.mbox. then Mail will let you import it if you choose it directly when importing mail.

  • Can't see message contents in "sent" mail folder

I had to rebuild my Apple Mail system two weeks ago. Now, if I need to look at a "sent" message from a point further back than two weeks ago, I can see the message entry, the subject, the addressee, but not the actual content of the message. I followed some advice elsewhere in this forum, but I think it made matters worse-I found two "sent" folders, under two different incoming mail identities, both mine, in my home Library Mail folder; I combined them, by physically dragging the contents from one to the other. Didn't work. Now I can't access any sent mail-I get the front details, but no contents. So now, if I have to, I can visit my Home folder Library to dig up old sent mail(it's all there), but I can't see anything from the Mail application. Any advice?

No, my question still hasn't been answered, but I can add information. As it is now, if I open my "sent" mail folder, I can see a list of emails, with subjects, date sent, etc., but if I click on one of them, if the email is older than a certain date I won't see a message. The lower, message, window is blank.
The new information is this: when I posted my original question, above, on Nov. 9, the blank-message problem wasn't an issue for messages sent in the preceding week; only for messages sent before that. Now, on Nov. 13, I can read messages back to Nov. 9, but not before that. The problem is advancing a day at a time. I can only read messages sent within the last four or five days; not before.

  • Can you use IMAP with the ipads mail feature?

Can you use IMAP with the ipads mail feature?

    Kappy,
Yes, our domain and email accounts are on a server that does accept IMAP. Also, our mac mini and imacs are all set up for IMAP. Buying an ipad will enable me to work from home during this winter.
Another ?: do you know if you can use text edit with the iPads mail feature? Reason being we have about 100 generic emails that all we have to do is change a few fields before sending out. Can this be integrated in without having to recreate all these messages?

  • Upgraded to Lion. Can't see files on my backup drive?

The title pretty much explains my issue, but here is my situation. I use Boot Camp and have a 2TB backup drive with 2 partitions. One partition is 1TB Mac OS Extended (Journaled) to backup OS X with Time Machine and the other is 1TB Windows NTFS to back up Windows 7 with Windows Backup.
So on the OS X side of things I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion. Now I can still backup to the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) partition with Time Machine but I can't see any backups or any files at all that I put on the backup drive while i'm in OS X Lion. I know they are there because When I'm in Windows 7 I can still see all Time Machine backups and all files on both partitions of the backup drive.
Any Idea why I can't view files on my backup drive anymore since upgrading to Lion or how to fix this issue?

    SOLVED:
I was reading a post about a similar problem and discovered a free program called TinkerTool. I downloaded it and under the Finder tab was able to check a feature called show all hidden files or something. Once I did this all files on my backup drive were visible but some were greyed out.
I unchecked this feature and closed TinkerTools then restarted OS X Lion. Everything is back to normal and I can again see and manipulate the files on my backup drive. I'm all set, maybe reading this will help someone else.

  • My ipad mail is synced to my iMac mail account. On iPad, I can only see my inbox and sent messages. I can't see any of the folders I have created on my iMac. How do I do that? Probably a dumb question, but I know there's a lot of smart people out there!

My iPad mail is synced to my private email account, which I organise on my iMac. On iPad, I can only see inbox and sent messages folders, not any of the other folders in my email account I have created on my iMac. How do I get iPad to show my other folders? Probably a dumb question, but I know there's a lot of smart people out there.

If you select a mailbox, you should get an Edit button (easier to see in landscape mode). Clicking the button will provide you with check circles for the messages. You also get Delete and Move buttons at the bottom. Check the messages you want to move and then navigate to the mailbox you want to drop them into. I think as long as you can navigate to a mailbox you can move the messages to it.
In the Mac Mail application and probably Outlook on the Windows side, you also setup rules to move messages to specific mailboxes. If the mailboxes are stored on the server, then you can have the sorting done on the server and they should appear that way on the iPad. If your later messages do not show up, you may need to have the iPad app pulled down more messages until they are all showing.

  • TS3276 can't see imap mail in mac mail

I have moved my mail to Mac Highway.  After forwarding my mobile me addresses to a new address, I then switched to iCloud for e-mails only, just so the forwarding would continue.  But now even after configuring the new IMAP address, mail says I have 141 e-mails but I can't see them.  How do I get them to download?  (I did go into the "mailbox" menu and clicked on synchronize, but that didn't help and it seemed to have scrambled the sent, drafts, trash and junk mailboxes even though I have disabled my mac mailbox) I'm using 10.6.8 Snow Leopard on a MacBookPro with a 4.5 Mail and I set up an IMAP account with SSL.  I'd appreciate any help.

  • Can't see IMAP Messages but CAN see all folders and count

So I added my IMAP account to my iPhone. I've done it manually as well as by allowing iTunes to sync it for me.
I can see the IMAP folders just fine. I can also see the number of messages in the folder as well. My Inbox, for example, says there are 2 messages, 0 unread and this is correct. I can click on the "Load 2 more messages" message and it starts the "processing" wheel...the I'm checkin thing, but it stops and I can't actually see the message.
    Any ideas?

So did you find a resolution to this issue? I have
been trying but no luck thus far.
iMac G5, MacBook   Mac OS X
    (10.4.7)
Nah. No ideas on what's up.
Personally, since I can't move messages between accounts on the iPhone anyway (I use my IMAP as "Storage" between a desktop/laptop, etc.) it doesn't really matter at this point anymore.
All I've figured out how to do is to nuke the ones on my iPhone I don't want, leave the ones I want on there and then when I get home, they'll all show up as new messages in Mail and then I can play, etc.
'Eh...whatever. Not a terrible biggie to me anymore. I've learned to cope

  • How can I view my sent emails? I'm running ios5 but can only see my inbox.

I would like to resend a previously sent email but my iPad is only showing my inbox. How can I see my sent folder?

In your email inbox, hit the back arrow in the top left.
Underneath where it says "Accounts" select the one that you are using.
In there, you will see the "Sent Mail" folder.

  • Time Machine: restoring mailbox, can't see restore button

Apologies if this is an incredibly stupid question. I'm trying to restore my inbox in Mail. I navigate to the inbox in the Mail app, click on Time Machine in the dock. It all appears to work and says 'click restore to recover your inbox'. However, I can't for the life of me see the restore button. In fact, apart from the Mail window, I can't see any evidence of TM at all.
Could someone post a screenshot to show me what it's meant to look like?
    Thanks.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
You need to navigate to an actual backup (either via the "cascade" of Mail windows, or the timeline on the right.) Then the Restore button at the lower right of the screen should do what you want.
See the blue box in #15 of Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

  • How can I see what is in the Trash folder?

When I open the Trash folder, all I see is a gray bar with "Trash" on the left and a button marked "Empty" on the right.  I know I have items in the trash, but I can't see them.  It used to be when I opened the trash, I saw a list of all items in the trash.  What has changed??  Thanks.

Your trash bin may be damaged and it's deleting items as soon as you put them in.
Go to /Applications/Utilities/ folder and launch Terminal. At the prompt, copy and paste the following command into the Terminal window.
    sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash
Press Return. You will be asked to enter your admin password. As you type, your password will not be returned, so be sure to enter it correctly. Press Return again. Log out and back in or restart.

  • I can't see the body of my mails, I just se the preview.

I dont know why my mails do not show on the window at the right side of the display.
I can only see on the left side, all the received mails and the 3 lines of the preview, but on the right side only shows From, To and the subject
Anibody has any idea what can I do?
    Thanks

Quit the mail app, launch the app again and then look to see if the messages appear, if not - quit the mail app and restart the iPad.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps.
Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
If that doesn't work, reset your iPad.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

  • How can I see the contents of the "Other" folder and delete unwanted files?

    Cleaning up "Other" folder

For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article. If the Storage display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
              iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation—not the mythical 10%, 15%, or any other percentage. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
    sudo /Applications/GrandPerspective.app/Contents/MacOS/GrandPerspective
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator. Ignore any other messages that appear in the Terminal window.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.
