Import "make a second copy" no longer creates "Imported on..." subfolder?
In Lightroom 2, the option to create a second copy in another location would put the file copies under a new subfolder called "Imported on <date>", but using the image's original file name. In LR 3, the file renaming system is used (nice!), but the files are not put in new subfolders based on import date, so the second copies all end up in a single folder unless I manually specify a new second copy folder for each import. Am I missing something, or is there some way to have subfolders automatically created when making second copies on import?
I was happy to see the forced use of "Imported on..." folders has ended, I'd posted about that a year or two ago wondering how we were supposed to remember the day of the week we imported them when looking for a set of originals.
It seemed to me that using a system of year folders with day folders in them might be more practical. At least that's the way I've set up my catalog for the imported files using "Custom Name - Original File Number" naming tokens. (Folder 2010 has files named 2010-01-xxxx for all photos taken in January 2010). Unfortunately, it seems LR won't make the year and day folders automatically for the original files backup.
"Make a Second Copy To:" does let me choose a folder on my backup disk right with all the "Imported Ons" which someday I hope to retrieve orginals from to put into a similar arrangement. Am thinking of doing one folder per month such as 2010-01 and just have the whole month's shots in order by the original file number after the year/month designation.
After looking back at previous years' backups I find many originals sets that were renamed and some that weren't -- assume that LR 2 was doing that. It did seem to have a mind of it's own sometimes.
I found your post as I was going to post suggesting that "Make a Second Copy To" was slightly misleading as my copies for the Catalog are converted to DNGs and I was unsure if these backup files would also be converted. I was relieved to find they are still in the CR2 format but disappointed they do not have my renaming scheme so I could match up with the DNG copy...
...maybe it should say "Backup Original File To".

Make a second copy on import to external drive and copy the file by date
In earlier versions I made second copies of files imported to an external hard drive. The files would import and automatically create a capture date file folder in the same manner as importing by date to the primary internal drive. At some point this feature seems to have gone away and now I get a folder on the external drive: p:\\pictures\2014\Imported on Tuesday, April 22, 2014. What I would like is: p:\\pictures\2014\2014-04-22
Is there anyway to force this to happen? I really hate having to manually move lots of files and create folders to keep the system I have had for years that organizes my files by date of capture on both the primary and backup drives.Short answer: No. That is the way it is.
Why? The Make Second Copy during Import is designed to be a backup of your memory card processes-not a back up of your files as you store them on disk. It is intended to be a transient copy that allows you an immediate backup until such time as a File System Level backup can be performed, allowing you to have two copies so that you can reformat your memory cards.
I agree it would be nice if the folder storage strategy was duplicated for the backup as it is created for the import but that is not something you can set the program to do currently. I remember it behaving differently versions ago but do not recall exactly how it used to work. -
How can I make a second copy so I can make some changes, but lose the original document?
How can I make a copy of my new pdf convert to word document without losing the original document?
Hi mariponce,
Is it the Word document that you want to make a copy of, or the PDF? In either case, you can choose File > Save As (in the appropriate application), and give the file a new name. For example, if you have a file named "HappyTimes.docx," you could choose File > Save As, and name the file "HappyTimes2.docx." Then, you'll have two Word files, and you can edit one and leave the other intact.

Do 'tags' make a second copy in the desktop of icloud documents?
when i tag documents in icloud say like in preview, i hear a copy-paste system sound. i just want to be sure i am not working with duplicates!
can anyone clarify?Welcome to the forum.
You are correct that PrE does not have XML, OMF or EDL, as PrPro does.
The best course of action is to use a Clipboard Extender, such as ClipMate, to Copy the Timeline in one Project, and then be able to Paste it into a new, correct Project. I have not used it, but most users find it indespensible for such actions, and recommend it highly. Not sure how many other Clipboard Extenders are available, and for which platforms, but with the high marks for ClipMate, if it installs on your platform, I would try with it first.
Good luck,

Import files with save copy to Microsoft Onedrive
Now that Microsoft is offering Office 365 with unlimited Onedrive storage, I am planning to subscribe to the service. I would like to use the Onedrive space to be my tertiary backup storage for my photo files. (I have an external 2TB hard drive as the primary backup.) I have two questions regarding this service and file backup:
1. Can anyone recommend a software package that would automatically synchronize in my computer and Onedrive? I was using Duplicati to copy files onto some Google storage I have, but that has ceased to work and I think it may be due to changes in Duplicati's software and sales model. This was not synchronization - it was a copy and backup function.
2. If an automatic synchronization is not possible, I can certainly copy all of my existing files to Onedrive - though it would take a long time. Going forward, I would like to use the "create second copy" feature of Lightroom import to put copies of new raw files out on Onedrive. Has anyone successfully tried this and could they comment on the feasibility of doing this?On your PC add the Folder where you have your images stored. Add this folder location to your OneDrive Library. This should sync the entire folder.

If I import RAW and tick 'Copy as DNG' and 'Make a second Copy' and 'File rename: Prefix-Date-Image#', the 'second' copies are not DNG and not renamed.
If I import JPEG and tick 'Copy' and 'Make a second Copy' and 'File rename: Prefix-Date-Image#', the 'second' copies are renamed!
So why in case of RAWs are the second copies not renamed? This bug precludes the use of more than one camera at a shoot.
LR3.6
How come??? I recall this was an old issue; is it too difficult to repair such a simple bug???If this is changed, make sure it is a choice as otherwise the copy function is of no use to me. I do not want LR to make changes to the original files that I copy for backup in any way. I use the function for how it was designed (a temporary back up with no changes made to the files from the card) and make back ups of the files in the LR catalog separately. Once everything is safely backed up I can then delete the temporary copies.
I would guess there are lots of others like me who don't want this situation changed as we have been doing this for several years now since prior to LR 1 when the thing was in beta.. -
Does iphoto create a second copy during import?
If I upload photos from my SDHC card into a directory that I designate, and then import them into iPhoto, does iPhoto create a second copy of the image file?
MJTMost Simple Back Up
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex:
Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate
If you're using a Managed Library then this backs up everything: Photos, metadata, edits, books, slideshows and all.
If you want to just back up the Photos then File -> Export is the way to go.
Apps like iPhoto2Disk or PhotoShare will help you export to a Folder tree matching your Events.
There is never a need to go into the Library package.

? on make second copy on import
Hi All,
when you check make second copy when importing files lightroom stores a copy of the files in a location of your choosing, when you make changes or add metadata to the primary file does lightroom add the changes to your backup copy?
Thanks
MikeNo. It is a once off copy of the imported files. The second copy is not associated with the catalog at all.

I want to order a second copy of an existing iPhoto book. Though created in the smaller format now only the larger format is showing. How can I switch an existing iPhoto book back to the smaller format?
To change a book size duplicate it (select the book in the source pane and press command and D) since text flow and picture placements can change due to the size differences - then click on change themes, select the same theme and the new size
check it carefully
Before ordering your book preview it using this method - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1040 - and save the resulting PDF for reference - the delivered book will match it.

I created a new collection and put all of my same photos in them as a previous collection, then I changed them to black and white and both collections changed. How do I keep the first collection colour and make the second collection black and white.
For the second collection, choose the option to make virtual copies. Then you can turn the virtual copies to black & white, leaving the first collection in color. If you want file copies of the B & W images you can export copies.

Create the second copy, delete and the first copy serial (Archive Deletion)
Hi Experts,
I am new to DB2 and i want to enable "-cds" Option (Create the second copy, delete and the first copy serial) while performing online backups. Though this option is available in "Oracle" and we can schedule the same in DB13 itself.
If you can please guide to enable this feature in DB2 via DB13 ?
Regards,
JAIHello JAI,
which tool you´re using to create the online backups?
The command to prune could be as followed:
db2 prune history and delete
It will be helpful if you monitor your db2diag.log during this to see whats happened.

This is not Adobe. We are Premiere Elements users trying to help other Premiere Elements users.
I will get back to the actual preview files produced during the Timeline content render, but first I would like to start with the basics of your workflow with this choppy play back.
1. What computer operating system is your Premiere Elements 12 running on? What do your computer resources look like? Is your video card driver up to date according to the web site of the manufacturer of the video card? Do you have more than one video card in your computer?
2. How and what are you importing into this project that yields the choppy previews of rendered Timeline content? What are the properties of these source media...video and audio compression, frame size, frame rate, interlaced or progressive, file size, pixel aspect ratio. What camera is this video coming from? Or do you have videos and stills on this Timeline?
More later.
Thanks.
ATR
3. Based on your source media properties, what are you or the program setting as the project preset in the new project dialog? -
