Import matching raw files?

I'm switching from the discontinued Aperture, but my workflow doesn't seem to be supported in LR. I shoot raw plus jpeg, and store everything off-line. I import the jpegs-only for organizing and culling and for many purposes, they are good enough. For the special pictures, I import the matching raws for detailed processing. Aperture had an "import matching raws" facility. I haven't found anything like that in LR. Any ideas?

Well, if you import the jpeg and throw away the raw, then yeah - you save a lot of storage, but if you are keeping the raw for possible import later, then you're still having to store it somewhere - that's all I meant - the act of importing doesn't consume storage, not throwing away raws is what takes storage - whether they're imported or not.
Put another way: when you import a raw image, it just makes a small entry in a database, it doesn't make an internal copy of your raw file. OK, yeah: it'll copy it from your camera card, but you need to do that anyway if you want to have the option to import later, whether importing now or not.
Not my most eloquent description, but does that make sense?
In other words, a raw file takes the same amount of space on your disk whether it's been imported or not, thus you don't save any storage by not importing it (you can only save storage by deleting the raw file itself from your disk).
Yes, of course. But I'm not at all concerned about total hard disk space. What I meant about saving space is saving space on my laptop, where disk space is constrained, especially with SSDs that I'm fond of.
The camera cards can be dumped onto external drives at my leisure, but copying to the laptop is often done in the field, and it's nice to be able to copy the jpegs only and still get high quality without tethering, and then load the raws when you need them. When the projects done, they can all be archived, keeping only the previews.
Don't get me wrong - I'm not trying to suggest there is no value in being able to defer importing of the raw file - there are a fair number of people who want to do it - NOT to save storage, but for "workflow" purposes: start with the jpeg and do minor edits if any, then import raw only if more painstaking editing is warranted.. - that way you don't have raw images cluttering your catalog when you have no use for them, yet.
Right. But they do also clutter your disk and limit your storage if you find it convenient working on a laptop without external drives.

  • Import matching RAW does not include all photos

    Hello to you all,
When I want to import matching RAW files, Aperture only recognizes a couple of photos inside the projects. I'm using the 'include current filter' as I have made a selection of pictures inside the project based on a rating. But even when I disregard this filter Aperture only sees about half of the RAW files belonging to the JPG files.
The 'date & time' settings are ok and I have not renamed files during import. All JPG files are imported in the same project and I'm importing from the correct SD-card. There are about 300 photo's in the project and I have selected about 80 of them for the matching RAW import function.
Am I missing something here or does this appear to be an Aperture bug?

LR shows only those images that are in the catalog.
If you want to see exported images in LR you have to tell LR to add them to the catalog.
You do this by checking the box "Add to this catalog" in the Export dialog.

  • How to Delete imported JPEGS after matching RAW files are imported as masters

Using a 5D Mark III and shoot JPEG (SD) and RAW (CF).
Aperture 3.5.1, using a managed library
Perviously, using a 7D so new to shooting JPEG and RAWs from an aperture Aperture workflow standpoint.
I know that i can import the JPEGs > delete images that do not make the cut > then import the matching RAW files in the import dialogue that correspond to the JPEGs in the Aperture Library.
I use the RAW files as my Camera Master images and once the RAW files are imported, the smaller resolution JPEGs are no longer needed or viewed in my normal edit workflow.  I only need the JPEGs to quickly go through the images to find out which RAW files i need to import at a later time to increase the speed of import > edit > deliver.
    My Assumptions:
    1.  Logic would lead me to believe that after import the user should see a stack like image representation with whatever file type is considered Master to be on top and the viewable secondary file type on the bottom.  clicking on the image stack should allow you to see both file types as you would normally see with image stacks with the same files types.  This is not the case...  What am i missing here?
    2.  Logic again would lead me to believe that when i have the ability to delete one of the 2 image types as i do not need both in the end.  After the import process is complete and RAWs are backed up, I want to delete the JPEG files as they are just taking up more space on my DAS drive array...  There is no need to keep a duplicate of every file in both JPEG and RAW format.  This is not the case as when i delete the JPEG or RAW, both files formats are deleted simultaneously.  What am i missing here?
    Problems: (correspond to Assumptions above)
    1.  I do not seem to have access to both images (JPEG & RAW) in a stack where i can expand and close the stack to see both?  It seems like i only have access to the image type i have selected as Master?  This seems counter intuitive to what the workflow should be as why would aperture 'lock the secondary file types away' so you can't easily view both file types as the same time for comparison?
2a.  Reality seems to be that i do not have access to the JPEG and RAW image files.  I can only see one at a time by selecting the images and choosing 'make JPEG master’ and then respectively... 'make RAW master', but you can't see both at the same time for file comparison.
2b.  Also, I can't find a way to delete the JPEG images after the RAW files have been imported.  I would presume most professional photographers shoot RAW and do not shoot JPEG as their camera master or editing master images.  I do not understand why aperture has captured both as a pair in the library that does not allow me to delete the JPEG (in this case) as i have selected the RAW as my master.
If someone can please help...  The function seems like either i am missing something obvious or that the implemented function of using RAW + JPEGs files for import is broken from a real world workflow standpoint.

    leonie...
thank you for clearing that up for me.
I think that at this point it is silly to use the JPEG+RAW import functionality as it seems that it takes longer to do the above steps than to just import only the RAW files and press on from there.
I seems what i have done in the past of only importing the RAW files and then using the quick preview functionality to reduce image load times is the best thing in can come up with without keeping 'duplicates' in the database.
That really baffels me that there is no built in functionality to remove the JPEG from a RAW+JPEG pair and i wonder how the real world photographers who help Apple test and implement software to solve real world workflow problems thought the JPEG+RAW import was going to be used.
I do understand that i can use a smaller JPEG file size to reduce the bloat of the database, but used over hundreds of thousands of images is certainly going to make a dent in my total aperture database size and therefore storage needs down the road.
If you have any other workflow thoughts, or know of a 3rd party plugin/ etc... to fix this obvious shortcoming then i am all ears..
thank you again Leonie and have a great week

  • After importing my JPEGs, the matching RAW-Files aren't found! Why?

I shot JPEG+RAW-Couples with my Canon EOS 450D (aka Rebel XSi) and imported the JPEGs into Aperture 3.1.3. When I wanted to import the matching RAW-Files later, Aperture didn't recognize one of them. I didn't change anything at the files. Importing both as a couple works without any problems.
What's the mistake? Can I fix it or is it a bug?
    Thanks in advance!

Users have reported problems with Aperture when Projects hold too many Images.  How many is "too many"?  No one knows -- I keep all projects under 1,000 Images, and even then very rarely go over 500.
Projects should be subsets of your Library.
Aperture was designed around the general topology of "one Project per shoot".  From the User Manual:
"Projects: The basic containers used in Aperture to organize images by shoot."
I have found that sticking to this topology seems to keep gremlins at bay.

  • Importing cr2 raw files won't work on ios 6 when it worked fine on ios5. Anyone have a solution?

I have  been importing cr2 raw files to my iPad using ios 5 but importing cr2 raw files won't work on ios 6. Sees files in camera but when import stops it fails with an exclamation mark in red circle. Anyone have a solution?

Don't know if you care anymore or it applies, but I was able to get things working but it took drastic measures.
I had to do a full system reset and update by doing the following:
    - Make note of all your settings in your system and apps especially accounts and forget about in app data that's only on your iPad and not in a cloud service because it will be gone after this
    - Connect iPad to Mac and startup iTunes
    - Hold down Home and Power buttons simultaneously for about 8 sec until the screen turns black
    - Release the Power button but continue holding the Home button until there's a popup on your screen which indicates it's in recovery mode
    - Follow the instructions to recover your iPad but recover it to factory state, not recover from a backup
    - Reinstall all your apps and content
    - Reconnect to all your services on your system and apps
I could not restore from a backup since it brought back my bad data too.  It also didn't restore my music and no matter what I tried it wouldn't put my music onto my iPad.  Had to start clean.
It appears over time that the system gets dirty and there's lots of bad data that can't get resolved.  This is especially true if some of your apps have crashed a bunch.

  • How to import only RAW files from camera?

I also shoot with both RAW and JPEG, such that I have access to JPEGs to share with people immediately before post-processing.  But I only want to use RAW in my Lightroom flow.
When pictures are already in Lightroom, I use filters in the library view to show only RAW, or only JPEG, or both (by applying a filter on the file extension).
But how do I set a filter before importing?  I would like to import only the RAW pictures into lightroom, but I don't see a way of doing that using Lightroom's import from camera card features.  I either have to let lightroom  import all, and then remove the JPEGs, or use Windows explorer to copy over just RAW files and then use Lightroom to import.
I would like to use Lightroom in just one step to import all RAW files (but only RAW files) from the camera card directly to the library.  A file filter in the import dialog seems like an easy feature to implement.

Another reason to have a filter in import is then you can then apply a preset to the RAW files only. At present if I want to apply a preset to my RAW files on import I have to apply it to the JPEGs too as there is no way of being selective on import. I then have to remove the preset from the JPEGs, which is a pointless and unnecessary task, whilst LR is busy rendering the unwanted look.
I shoot both file types on one cameras as the JPEG gives me a look that is very hard to replicate with the RAW files and on another camera I use a picture style to remind me of what I was looking for when shooting. Again as it's a custom style it's very hard to replicate the look in LR from the RAW file.
Though a major reason I shoot both JPEGs + RAW is that I was asked by a client a few years back, when I only shot RAW for all the shots as JPEGs to select down from. As this was a 4 week feature film shoot it took several days constant rendering out of Photoshop to output the JPEGs. This was just before LR and even then, LR would still take considerable time to produce all those exported files, though a lot quicker than PS I would hope. So now I always shoot JPEGs as well so I never have to waste time outputting JPEGs for a client to do a rough select.

  • Can I update elements 11 to import olympus RAW files from my new OM-D M5 mk 2?

I have bought a new Olympus OMD E-M mark 2. Great, but my copy of Elements 11 won't import its RAW files. I have tried to instal RAW 6.4.1 and RAW 7.1 patches but the installer just says it's the wrong version even though I downloaded from a Elements page. I've just re-installed the Application Manager and that didn't help. Please can you help me find the right patch and get it working?
    Thanks

No you can't update PSE11. But it is possible to download and install the free DNG converter to convert your raw files to the Adobe universal Raw format and the files will open in all versions of PSE (keep your originals as backups and for use in the camera manufactures software)
Windows download (.exe file) click here DNG Converter 8.8
Mac download (.dmg file) click here DNG Converter 8.8
You can convert a whole folder of raw images in one click. See this quick video tutorial:

  • Problem importing NEF raw files in PSE 11

In the past week I have become unable to import Nikon raw files (NEF format) into PSE 11 editor.  I seem to have the latest version of  PSE 11 and the latest camera raw plug-in (7.4).  All was working fine.  I now get an error message "unable to use the camera raw plu-in.  It is not compatible with this version of Photoshop Elements".
    Can anyone please help?
    Many thanks.

Did you update via the Help> Updates menu option or by some other means?
Search your computer to make sure you only have the one copy of 'Camera RAW.8bi'. On my windows 7 64-bit it  is at C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\Elements 11\File Formats\Camera Raw.8bi and is 24,719,736 bytes.
Are these NEF files from a newer Nikon camera? If so which one? Each camera has it's own NEF format (although the error message you get does not suggest this would be the problem)?

  • How to import matching RAWs for a large library?

I've been using iPhoto for many years to manage JPEGs while just keeping RAWs on the side on a large disk. Since Aperture allows me to reference those RAWs without storing them locally, I'd like to do so. The only problem is, it doesn't seem to be possible to import matching RAWs for more than one project at a time. Since I have 50+ projects (maybe 100+ – I haven't counted) and enough RAWs that it takes Aperture a few minutes to load them all and find the matching ones for each project, it's really impractical to do this one project at a time. Surely there's a better way.

You may have some library corruption but that's hard to prove.
I would also consider hardware issues including the router and hard drives.
Where is your library content stored?  Internal drive (Mac?PC?) External drive? Network storage?
    200GB isn't huge - I don't think it's the size that matters here.

Is there any way for Aperture 3 to import Fuji RAW files?  Lightroom does.

X1 Pro - RAW not yet supported.  Understand it takes a little while as it's a new sensor type but Lightroom has caught up now and Aperture is supposed to be a serious photographers' tool; just as the Mac has always been a serious photographer's computer.

What camera are you using? The RAW support is camera specific.  Have you installed the latest Digital Camera Raw update 6.01?
If you are already running the latest raw support, try to reinstall:
To reinstall you need to exchange files in the System Library. So be sure to backup your computer before patching the system library.
The RAW support files are installed in the System Library in the folder "/System/Library/CoreServices" Folder:
To open this folder, use the Finder's "Go" menu. Click the smiling Finder icon in the Dock to bring the Finder forward.
Then type the keyboard shortcut ⇧⌘G  (for "Finder > Go > Go to folder")  and copy and paste "/System/Library/CoreServices" into the text field.
In the Finder window that will open, delete both the files "RawCamera.bundle" and "RawCameraSupport.bundle". You will have to enter your Administrator password.
Download the current RAW support update from Apple's Support Site: Digital Camera RAW Compatibility 6.01
In the Downloads folder you will find the disk image with the installer. Double click it to open and run and the installer.
    Then restart your Mac.
If the current support is still causing the problems after reinstalling, try to downgrade to Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 5.07
