Import media from card vs. Finder

Is it a bad idea to Import MOVs straight from the Finder to FCPx as opposed to Importing from the original card structure? The only difference I see it the "Camera Name" and "Reel" columns are blank, but maybe there is something else I am missing.
Let me back up:
I'm seeing signifigantly slower read/write speeds when I import media that are within the original CF card data structure as opposed to when I import files that are "loose" in the Finder.
I have cloned my source cards from the CF media to my RAID, which is where I am importing from (there is no card attached to my computer).
I am importing to an Event that is on the same RAID as my cloned card.
When I use FCPx to Import media from the cloned card on my RAID, I am seeing read/write speeds of about 20MB/s.
If I copy the MOV files from the cloned card to the "Original Media" folder in my Event (again, on the same RAID as my cloned card), I get speeds around 300MB/s. If I import the MOVs that I copied to the "Original Media" folder, the Import into FCPx is instant.
Thanks

try this plugin. it will import directly to FCP X from cam

  • Problem importing photos from card reader

I have been successfully importing photos from my camera's memory card using a card reader. I was half way through a similar import, when a pop up came up on screen to say I was running out of disc space. So I deleted some other files to make room and the import appeared to complete. I then organised these photos into albums, when iPhoto unexpectedly quit. When I opened it again the albums still recognise that there are photos there but you can not view or edit them. Any help appreciated.

I did do a test and yes if you have a folder on your SD card, you will get an "Import" link.  If not, no importing ability.  I was not able to import a .m4v movie however.  I was able to import a .MOV that was taken by an iPhone but not a .mov from another application.
I'd say the hack to import into an iPad using the Apple SD Card Reader is make sure the media files are in a folder named DCIM on an SD card (as you mentioned) with the 8 character naming convention.

  • Can't burn cds but can import media from them?

Hi. I built my computer about 7 months ago and runs Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit edition. I am able to import songs from my cd drive but cannot burn since it says "Disk burner or software not found..." There is a window that says that itunes cannot import media or burn cds when i start up the program. I have tried reinstalling itunes multiple times and it is no better. I have even tried to find converters so I could burn my music using windows media player. I know that the formats for the music are .mp4a, .mp4b, and mp4p and that WMP does not support these formats for burning. is there any way i can get drivers for my computer or should i just go out and buy an external cd drive for my computer? Or is there a converter that would change these formats to .mp3, even though that isn't very legal. The CD drive is made by Samsung and believe it is the SH-W162L DVD writer.

iTunes can be a bit flaky on 64 bit Vista since it's not supported but it has been known to work.
Try updating your CD/DVD drivers here -> http://www.gearsoftware.com/support/drivers.cfm
Also, make sure the your other firmware & drivers are up to date.

  • Can't Import Directly from Card Reader or Camera anymore

I am using aperture 2.x and all of a sudden I can't import directly from my G9, 30D or San Disk card reader anymore. I have to copy files locally first to make this work.
This is what happens: I can see and select the thumbnails off the card just fine but when I select all and import it immediately says "0 files imported".
    Any ideas?

For the record, the workflow you describe is a good way to lose image data. The anomalies that you are experiencing should be a clue; you could just as easily be losing image data.
I guess it just depends on how important the images are to each individual photog,

  • Iphoto unable to import images from card or from desktop

A recent update to the operating system for my imac with Maverick has rendered my iphoto incapable of importing images, creates a mirror shift of the frontpage as it is opened up and requires a long time for iphoto to open. When I try to import a photo from the desktop or from a card the program spins into dysfunction and I am forced to force quit. Program functionality seems to be impaired as I look for images, select, etc. Permissions verified and fixed in Utility disk. Restart computer several times.....I would be grateful for assistance. Kind regards to the community.....HP

Well that suggests the issue is with the main Library. So
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Error while importing clips from card ?

Hi everybody.  Hope you're well and thanks for helping.
I use the board occasionally when I have a problem obviously or sometimes I just browsing to get more familiar.  I'm a fairly experienced user. I've maybe made 2-3 dozen dvds; I burn a lot of stuff to mp4 for smaller storage, maybe 3-4 times a month.  Here's my question.
    The tools....
iMovie 9 on a 13" MacBook Pro. 500 gig drive with usually 100-150 gig of room
    Canon Vixia HF20 HD camcorder
SanDisc Extreme smart card, rated at 10, holds 16 gig.
Basically what happens is I film myself practicing ( I'm a musician) fairly often and use the smaller frame rate so I can film to the card and
load it with the reader.  At the end of the afternoon I usually have 3-5 clips to import.
When I load them thru the card reader there's no problem recognizing the card, but the computer will NEVER import all the clips without an error..
Maybe I'll get 2 out 4, or 3 out of 5 to load completely.  But the others will only load a minute, sometime just a few seconds before they read ERROR in red underneath the clip. Eventually I get them to all load by ejecting the cardand starting over, unchecking the clips that were completed and just loading the ones with error.  And I'm constantly initializing the card in the camcorder.   Maybe I should try a different card though, haven't done that yet...
At any rate, the error mesages happens ALL THE TIME, like.. every day...    Does anyone have an idea what's happening ?
(and no problems ever with the USB transfer ).
    Thanks in advance
(wishing I could run Adobe movie software on this but I'd need a MUCh bigger system)

    Hi there and thanks..
    Quick details..
iMovie 9, version 8.0.6 running on 10.6.8.  I was exporting to mp4 yesterday and couldn't get the info..
So the card definitely mounts, that's never a problem. I'm going to try your suggestion.
When I copy the card contents to the desktop, can you tell me what I will need to do to import to iMovie ?  I'll go to import movies on the dropdown, then select the copied file from the desktop.   Will I have to select the specific movie files  ( mts format , maybe ? )  or will it read the movie fles automatically ?
I can always make a copy in disc utility as well I suppose.
    Thanks again...

  • Importing Media from Motion 5

Why all of a sudden do all of my imports from Motion 5 have a black background?
They won't properly super as before.  I have everything in Motion set as transparent too!
What am I doing wrong here?  I just want text over my subject (shot on green) keyed over white to show words.
    Help!

    No 422 as always.
I'm now trying the Final Cut Title set up in Motion.  I've done one and it still doesn't show as transparent over they layers beneath it in FCPX.  Still see black file that won't reveal the layers below it.

  • Moving projects and imported media from computer to EHD

    Hello all
I have just recently finished a project in  FCPX and all the media is stored on my Macs hard drive. I am wanting to move this project to my EHD, so its not taking up so much space on my computers HD. But in doing so i also want to be able to go back and edit the project at anytime. Can anyone help me out on how to move everything over. I tried to copy the project folder itself but says that the file volume is to small to copy over.
    Thanks

    Tom,
When I duplicate the project to a properly formatted EHD as you have suggested, fcpx accurately creates duplicate event and project files on the EHD, however it also creates an exact duplicate event in the event library i.e. with the identical name and contents as ther original - 2 exact event files.  Is this normal?

  • Severe problems importing media from iPhone 4 to Aperture 3

I'm using iOS 4.0.2 with an iPhone 4.
First time I have tried to import into Aperture 3 and it's only importing some images and I get the same message of errors and a statement that the following images are of an unsupported file format for Aperture 3, they are of course jpegs??.
I just tried using Image Capture to a folder on my Desktop and it is taking approx. 10 mins per image to download and then when I cancel the import it fails to save any images anyway.
Same goes for iPhoto. Any ideas anyone? Thanks.

I believe today's OS update (for the computer, not the phone) has some Apeture fixes in it - have you downloaded that update and tried again?

  • Import from card doesn't seem to work

I am watching a training video from Lynda.com on FCP X and in that video it shows that when importing media from a card as soon as the card is connected an import window pops up with many useful features.  The trouble is that that window never appears for me.  I am shooting with a Canon 5d and recording to a compact flash card.  Lemme guess, this doesn't work for the 5d?

    Andy,
There are other recent discussions on this very topic with the 5D.  Look for them on this forum.  I own a T2i.  You can get the files, just not maybe in the way your are looking for.  The mov files that the Canon DSLRs record should be able to be brought directly in.  So, IMHO, you can simply copy the files from your card to a folder on your drive then use the FCP X File menu command to Import ... Files to get them.  Still, I am working from vague memories of what the resolution was.  Check the discussions by searching the forum for 5D.  Best wishes.

  • FCPX media import import window does not match finder

So I am trying to import media from Drive:PROJECT01/COT OODOODD/CONTENTSA/  as you can see what I see in finder is not what I get in FCPX media import window... ??

it seems if I close down FCPX and restart everything is fine - mmmn not very useful.
    Is this a 'known issue'?
So long as I leave the camera contents folder named as 'contents' then X will unwrap the mxf files inside - which is fine - but why does the media import window not refresh when I edit names and content in finder without having to restart FCPX?
