Import Metadata - connection failed

Hi All,
When I try to do "import metadata" by right clicking on my database I get connection failed error. In this the datasource name and user name are defined repository variables. Whereas, if I do "import metadata" from under the file menu and give datasource name and user name values I dont have any problems. So it almost seems like the problem is with repository variables but I dont have any problems in doing view data or this rpd is uploaded I dont have any other problems with it. Why doesn't it find the values for variables when I do import metadata?

Yes. just in case try hostname:port/serviceName
if not copy tns file into 11g both locations to just go by tns entry name
\OracleBI1\network\admin (Example: C:\OBI\Oracle_BI1\network\admin)

1.Copy the tnsnames.ora from Oracle Database home (ORACLE_HOME\NETWORK\ADMIN\) to the following locations.

* \oracle_common\network\admin (Example: C:\OBI\oracle_common\network\admin)
2.Set the TNS_ADMIN environment variable value with one of the copied locations in the step 1 in user.cmd or http://user.sh file depending on your OS.
This file will be found under
\instances\instance1\bifoundation\OracleBIApplication\coreapplication\setup
(Example : C:\OBI\instances\instance2\bifoundation\OracleBIApplication\coreapplication\setup)

Connection Failed While Importing Metadata

Hi All,
I have installed 11.1.1.6.2 Client on my machine and while i am trying to import metadata it throws an error saying "Connection Failed". Can some one help me how to resolve this ?

I did google it but all the responses were related to the Server versions but not client, none of them answered my question. And coming to your suggestion do you mean that we need to provide full TNS entry i.e.

Fail to import metadata

Hi,
I am trying to import metadata from existing module, I have the DB link and I had imported several tables few months ago. Now after several months I try to import more tables, I click on the module and click import I get the import metadata wizard, I deselect everything except tables and on the object selection window I try to expand tables I get foll error message:
API2206: Connection to source failed.
ORA-02019: connection description for remote database not found.
I logged on to the database where the DB link is located and I tested the link by querying the tables and it works fine there but not in OWB.
Can anyone please advice me on this.

I think the connection ie, DB link is not specified for the same.
You can check it by going to Properties of Source Module.
ie, right click on the source module>>Properties >> Connection
Specify the connection (DB link) and check whether the location is registered.

And i have tried like i place full tns entry in Datasource then it is connecting. How can i avoid that.

Firstly check if R3trans -d is working fine.
If so, please chek if the following parameters are set properly.
DIR_LIBRARY=/usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/exe/run
TRANSDIR = ....\trans
<SID>/DBHOST = <HOSTNAME>
<SID>/DBNAME = <SID>
<SID>/DBTYPE = ora
Execute the below command and check the transport profile:
tp check all pf=/usr/sap/trans/bin/TP_DOMAIN_<SID>.PFL
Please confirm the permission of the /oracle/ directory
The permission of the /oracle should be 755.
Also check if the import queue is not locked.
Also please ensure the Kernel is of latest version, if not, please update the DBSL shared library.Please look at the note 19466.
Finally you can try once distributing and activating the transport routes once.
When you executed command R3trans -d logfile trans.log will be created.
Please check this file for exact error information.
Paste the log file here.

Probably your listener or database is down...
If both are running, just stop the installation and reboot the server.
Then again start listener and database and continue SAP installation with "Continue old installation" option..
Also make sure that below environment variables are set properly...

Iphoto "connection fail" messages on photo import

I am having a problem with iphoto 8 that is driving me up the wall.. I will try to explain it in detail, so bear with me.
Recently, upon trying to import some photos from my Nikon D40X,(camera is tethered via USB) iphoto get partially through the import, then starting at a certain photo, it hangs for a bit. After about a minute of the spinning beach ball, I get a the following pop up:
Connection Failed The server may not exsist or is not operational at this time......
after I click OK, I get: The volume for "photo name.jpg" cannot be found... and I am given 3 options Cancel, Find Photo, or OK
If I choose Cancel, it just repeats the same messages. Clicking Find Photo allow me to point iphoto to the file in a finder window, it then imports properly, the repeats the problem with the next photo. Clicking OK, just repeats the problem with the next photo.
Now, I will mention that during this process, the camera is attached and available in finder the whole time. It is not losing any connection. I can open the camera folder from Finder, browse, copy, quicklook the photos with no problems.
I figured maybe if I copy these photos to a folder on the mac HD, maybe I could just import them directly to iphoto from the desktop. WRONG. The exact problem persists.
So, anyone have any ideas?

Macbook CoreDuo 2.0ghz
2gig ram
320gig HD
OSX 10.5.5
iLife 08
Nikon D40X camera. (I have all of the latest Apple software updates, including camera RAW updates.)
I shoot in HQ JPEG. Not RAW.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Are you shooting RAW or just jpgs? If it's just jpgs you might consider a workflow change that uploads the files to a folder on the desktop and batch renames the files to a file that that gives more information about the photo. If you also name the folder to reflect the shoot and import into iPhoto the event will have the same name as the folder and the file name issue will not crop up at a later date when copying to folder, etc. I use
I use the international date format and a brief description to batch, sequentially rename my files and use R-Name to do it. The folder is given a short date and a brief description.
If you shoot RAW only you can use the same process.
If you shoot RAW and jpg together you can find out about various workflows at the DAM (digital asset management) forum. I've found that the renaming before import makes it so much easier to organize backups of the files, search and sort, and identify the files in my backup location which just saves the folders and files separately.
Just some food for thought.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

Error in Importing Metadata in OBIEE 11G

1)I recently install obiee 11G, I get an error of ompnctl failed during installation.Does it affect my setup later.
2) I start creating RPD in 11G , I first created an System DSN and check the database connection it result in sucess.
Then i start creating RPD in offline mode when i click on import meatdata after that Import meatadata- select datasource screen i choose ODBC 3.5 and choose the
same DSN which i check previously and give the same user id and password it is giving me error The connection has failed.I also tried using OCI 10g/11g and in data source name i give the full connection string and giv the user id and password but still the problem remain same.
Can anyone please help me in debugging the issue.
The Database is in the same machine in which i installed OBIEE 11G

A few days ago I installed the Administration and Clients OBIEE11g tools on my machine. To do so follow these steps:
- Install Weblogic Server 10.3.3
- Install OBIEE 11g using 'Software Only'.
I selected this installation because BI Server is installed on a Linux server.
In the machine on which I installed previously existed the following products:
- Oracle Client 10.2
- Oracle ODBC Driver 10.2.0.2
When trying to import Metadata into the repository, using Administrative tool in OBI 11g the import fails with both, ODBC and OCI drivers. Always the same error appears: “The connection has failed.”
I created the tnsnames.ora file (which points to the database) in the path [Middleware Home] \ OracleBI1 \ network \ admin.
I tried to import metadata for replacing the DSN connection string. For this I have followed this syntax: (DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS_LIST = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP) (HOST = [ip_address]) (PORT = 1521))) (CONNECT_DATA = (SID = [db_name ]))). But it does not import metadata. Always the same error appears: 'The connection has failed. "

Connection Failed in OBIEE 11g Admin tool

I have virtual image V305 of OBIEE on linux x86-64. It is working fine but I was not able to access Admintool from linux m/c.
So I have installed OBIEE 11g client on windows XP. It is showing all the subject area & tables. But when I am importing any table from my DB, it is giving error "Connection has failed". I have done tnsname.Ora file in both folder Oracle client & OBIEE client
Please help me as soon as possible.

I've found a work around for using tnsnames:
put the following string in "Data Source" and it works

Problems when trying to import metadata from SQL server using OWB

Hi,
We are using Oracle 11.2 EE on AIX and OWB: 11.2. We are in the process testing Oracle Transparent gateway for SQL Server and have installed and configured it on a standalone windows server. We and have run the ORACLE_HOME\dg4msql\admin\dg4msql_cvw.sql on SQL Server side, in order to query the SQL-Server data dictionary. We have created a DB-link and can pull data correctly without any problems. When trying to import metadata in OWB Client on win xp, we have created a non-oracle SQL Server Module and are able to connect and start the import, but the displayed table names look strange and can not be imported. In front of every letter there is a square box, so instead of ADDRESS (the address table in the source system) , it reads "squarebox"A"squarebox"D"squarebox"D"squarebox"R"squarebox"E"squarebox"S"squarebox"S and subsequently the import fails with :API0413: Illegal name [<tablename>] Name with preceding and trailing spaces is not allowed.
The gateway have been configured with the following parameters:
HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO=<connect string>
HS_FDS_TRACE_LEVEL=OFF
HS_FDS_RECOVERY_ACCOUNT=RECOVER
HS_FDS_RECOVERY_PWD=RECOVER
HS_LANGUAGE=AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8MSWIN1252
Any ideas ?

Henrik,
I've found other problems where OWB adds a space between all characters returned from SQL*Server which is what is happening in your case, although it is being displayed as a square box.
In one of these cases the problem was fixed by using the 11.2.0.2 OWB so would it be possible for you to try with that version ?
Also, as the problem is not with the gateway itself as you can select successfully using a database link then it would be better to follow up in the OWB forum -
