Import .mod file - poor quality in Elements

I just installed Elements. My Panasonic SDR-H80 camcorder creates .MOD files.
when i open these .MOD files in Elements the playback quality is very poor compared to playing the files Windows Media Player.
the quality is equally poor when i export the project to .mpeg using the highest quality settings.
i have made no changes to any Elements settings nor have i made any changes to the .MOD file in or out of Elements.
update: i also tried rendering the clip by simply pressing "enter" after i dragged the clip to the timeline. This had no effect on the video quality.
i tried changin the 24p conversion method and the aspect ration converison settings also. no change. do these changes take effect immediately after makeing them?
makes no difference whether the video monitor is set to fit or 100%.
also tried maximun bit depth in project settings > video rendering
When creating a new project i selected the folowing preset:
NTSC > Hard Disk, Flash Memory Camcorders > Standard 48kHz
the settings of which match all the properties of my .MOD file
My computer is new, very capable of using elements. Windows 7 64bit, 4GB Ram, Intel Core Quad processor

Steve - lol the camcorder did come with software but here's the deal:
it's not compatible with Win7 so they have this update - http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/soft/download/vcs20ee_w7.html
that requires you to download several files. but several of the links do not link to files.
And panasonic customer service has been horrendous

Are you working with .mod standard or widescreen?
If .mod standard, less problematic. The file just might import without issue. Worst case would probably be changing the file extension from .mod to .mpg just prior to import.
Now .mod widescreen is another story that revolves around maintaining the 16:9 flag that scretches the video for display after encoding. Some have said that the 16:9 flag is lost in the transfer to computer; some say certain editors such as Premiere Elements just cannot read/recognize the flag. Whatever the case this is what you should consider in your Premiere Elements 7 Windows.
a. If you need to rename the file extension from .mod to .mpg, do so prior to import.
b. Import the .mod or .mpg counterpart into your Premiere Elements 7 project using the project preset NTSC or PAL DV Widescreen (NTSC or PAL depends on your location of interest). You will probably see that the video does not fill the space in the Edit Mode Monitor (you will probably see standard 4:3 looking image rather than widescreen 16:9 looking image).
c. Right click the file in the Project media area, select Interpret Footage, and, in the Interpret Footage Dialog/Pixel Aspect Ratio section, dot the Conform To: and change the setting to
D1/DV NTSC Widescreen 16:9 (1.2)
or
D1/DV PAL Widescreen 16:9 (1.422)
depending on your location of interest.
A while back there used to be a program called SD Copy that did the job of file name change and adding the 16:9 flag prior to import of the .mod widescreen into Premiere Elements. But, I have lost track of the SD Copy and suspect that is it no longer available. I have dealt with this issue many times at a forum that I formerly frequent. Most have reported back that this workaround worked for them. It is worth a try. I am looking forward to your results.
If you do opt to upgrade to Premiere Elements 11 Windows (please go tryout before purchase), I am eager to learn how your .mod widescreen is handled by version 11 in your computer environment.

I have not downloaded and used the following since I do not have any .mod widescreen. So, no guarantees. Please let us know the outcome if you try it if Interpret Footage does not work for you.

Importing .mod files and posting them as .mov files on YouTube

I'm importing .mod files from my camcorder to iMovie directly. The videos play fine on iMovie. I then directly send them to YouTube (I believe as the QuickTime format .mov). The files import, but fail to process for viewing.
Any suggestions?

First, do not worry, PrE7 has not harmed your files. It is just that it can only get to the Audio portion of those files, so that is all that it can display. They are still intact.
Now, with many file formats, and AVI in particular, much can be inside that file. This ARTICLE will give you some background.
With just the Audio coming through, my guess would be that the files are encoded using either DivX, or Xvid, as this is a very common problem. You can check this out with G-Spot, also mentioned in the linked article.
If the files play on your computer, then you likely have the necessary CODEC, unless you're using MediaPlayer Classic or VLC Player, as they have their own CODEC systems.
Steve's advice to convert these files is the best course of action. You may need to get the CODEC and install it (again, G-Spot will tell you exactly what you will need and if its installed on your computer). I do not know if Prizm has its own CODEC's but would assume that it uses those installed on the computer.

Importing .MOD files without having the .MOI files

I have a Panasonic sdr-s100 which records MPEG2 video in the .MOD/.MOI format onto sd cards.
Apart from the current 40+ restriction issue (see other posts), iMovie 08 imports new footage perfectly fine from my sd-card through my card reader.
The real problem I am having is with the older footage I recorded over the last year and a half. You see, I deleted all the .MOI files which were - until iMovie 08 got released - commonly regarded as useless once you had the movie/.MOD files on your hard drive. It was assumed these were only needed by the camcorder. How wrong we all were!!
So now I am having these neatly organized folders on my hard drive (100GB>) containing just the .MOD files, which iMovie refuses to recognize under File>Import. Copying the .MOD files back to an sd-card seemed like another option but iMovie 08 needs the accompanying .MOI files for the "Camera detected" message to pop up.
There is another thread (on which I have also posted), where we are trying to find some way to regenerate those .MOI files or use other similar methods, but none are really successful as yet. We also contacted JVC and Panasonic but it is not looking good so far. See here: http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=77489
Ideally, iMovie 08 would import my .MOD files straight from my hard drive without the need for .MOI files and simply use the .MOD's date modified info as the time stamp within iMovie 08. I do not wish to go via the DV route and re-import etc as it is way too time-consuming.
Has anyone got any other tips or similar problems? In the meantime I have sent this issue to Apple Feedback.

MP_Root (at the root level of the card directory structure) and putting a folder 101PNV01 inside the MP_Root folder. I then put some mpg-2 file in the 101PNV01 folder, started iMovie '08, inserted the flash card and had the files recognized so I could import them.

Here is what I did (and this should work for anyone who has old .MOD files but no longer has the accompanying .MOI files):
Like F Shippey stated
1) Create a root folder on your sd card (in my case, via a USB card reader) or USB stick (not tested) called Mp_Root.
2) Inside this folder create another folder called 101PNV01.
3) Rename the extensions of all your .MOD files to .MPG and copy them inside the 101PNV01 folder.
4) Restart iMovie08. It will now detect a new camera and import all clips using the date created/modified info as timestamps for perfect cataloging!
iMovie 08 does NOT re-encode the movie files, which is great cos it's very quick plus you retain 100% the original quality. It simply puts them in a .MOV container and creates a separate movie file for the thumbnails.

Importing MOD files

I am considering buying a Canon FS300 video camcorder. Some of the reviews cite difficulties with importing the files into imovie '09 because they are MOD files. However, the apple camcorder support article doesn't note any difficulties. I'm not interested in doing a lot of converting of files - I want an easy to use camcorder. Anyone have any experience with this camera and imovie?

I have iMovie09 and the FS300, and found it easy to import the movies from the camera. I imported my videos by first connecting the camera my MacBook Pro without iMovie open. Then I turned on the camera and let it initialize. Then started iMovie, which recognized the camera on start-up, and was able to import.

Import MOD files to FCE

OK - I replaced my Sony handicam with a Panasonic because the Best Buy folks told me that it would be completely compatible with a Mac; however, I can't get FCE to see the files at all.

I assume the two .mod files are the movie files, right? How do I get them to work with FCE?

I can still return my camcorder for a full refund. But all of the other ones that I've looked at use MPEG file format which has the same problems. All of the Sonys and JVC's are that way, as far as I know. Is there something else out there that would play nice with FCE? If so, I'll return this one and go get it.
I don't want to have to import to iMovie, create a movie there, export as Quicktime (which takes forever if there's a lot of video) then import to FCE. That seems like a lot of effort for something that should happen more easily.
I do understand that I can pay $20 for the MPEG-2 converter, and maybe I'll just do that.

How to import .MOD Files burned to DVD?

After a recent trip, a friend transferred my videos from his Panasonic hard disk camcorder to DVDs in .MOD format. When I try to open these .MOD files, I am told "The movie could not be opened - The file is not a movie file".
Does anyone know or have any tips as to how I can get these files on to my Mac and:
a. View them in Quicktime?
b. Import them into iMovie for editing/movie-making?
My apologies, I do not have much experience in this area. Any insight is greatly appreciated.

I'm using Adobe Premiere Elements 4 here and am having problems when importing mp4 files. They jump and skip, Flicker Green every now and then and generally just flip out on me.
Does anyone know what's the problem here and whether there's any specific settings i need to tweak within APE to get it to work properly?

I've found some other threads on here in regards to a similar problem with Samsung cameras and APE 4. These also mention that the files need to be converted to a friendlier format before importing.

Importing .mod files into iMovie from JVC Everio

Just bought a JVC GZ-MZ 255 camcorder which produce MPEG-2 .mod files. I have a ibook G4 with 10.4 OS and iLife '06 (contains imovie). Shouldn't imovie recognize the camera when hooked an automatically import? I have a feeling that streamclip might come into play - but is there another option? Anyone have experiece with this? I have a new Everio HD that I have been fooling with all day. Finally got a clip into iMovie 6 ....but only once and I'm still figuring this out too.....if you are not using a HD camera this may or may not work for you.
The Everio Quicktime extension must be installed. (Download and install the patch if you upgrade to Leopard).
Is your camera an HD? If so you need to capture the clip in 1440 CDR not FHD (FullHighDef).
Launch iMovie 6. Create a new movie in Video format HDV 1080i . then plug in your camera via firewire.
Put the camera in playback mode (Play/REC), press the Function, select Dubbing Playback (bottom of the menu). You should get a menu with a start button now. Switch to iMovie 6 and select "Import". This should start the clip playing from the camera....you may have to hit the Start on the camera.
This should get your clips into i Movie.
We may be ably to create playlists and get them in that way too but I have not had any luck with the JVC instructions to do this. There are video tutorials on the JVC website too but again they have not worked for me.
There is also a way to get and work the FHD files but that is a USB file transfer followed by a file conversion. I'll tackle that a little later...

Indesign Export SWF Import into pdf poor quality

I'm designing an interactive pdf portfolio.
I have exported the indesign file as an SWF at 300dpi 100% resoultion.
I have then imported the SWF back into indesign and exported as an PDF (interactive) again 300dpi
When viewed in the html file . Quality is perfect, however when viewed in the PDF quality is awful. No idea whats happening to cause this issue.
I am using CS5.5 / Version 7.5.2 & viewing the PDF in Acrobat X / Version 10.1.7
Can anyone advise?

In you have Acrobat, to eliminate any issue of swf degradation [when placing swf in ID and exporting pdf] you can add mulimedia swf directly into a PDF.
But, even with a successful placement of swf into a PDF, you will have no control of your recipient's successful playback due to versions of Acrobat/Reader, multimedia preferences and security settings.

Importing .mod file extension

Purchased the new digital video camera (JVC) which has a hard drive instead of taping thinking that I could download to my Mac video segments from one hard drive (JVC) to the Mac. But.....of course.... it's not that easy. My Mac recognizes the camera's hard drive (no problem there) after plugging in the firewire from camera to Mac, but the files are UNREADABLE!!!!!! It has a .mod file extension. To view the video on the Mac I have to use JVC's software which of course is totally worthless since the point was putting together a IMovie, etc. Is there a 3rd party software that will bridge this ( I do own Dazzle... but that defeats the purpose since I bought that for analogue tapes!!!!) And, of course, Best Buy won't take the camera back since it's past the 2 week purchase.

You may have already found a solution to your dilemma. If not, this is what I would try.
Purchase the MPEG-2 Playback Component ($20 Apple Store).
Download MPEG Streamclip (free).
Mount the hard drive and drag the .mod file to your Desktop.
Rename the file by changing the file extension from .mod to .mpg and open the file with MPEG Streamclip.
Use it to convert the file to DV Stream (.dv). This new .dv file can be opened by iMovie (for further edits) or QuickTime Pro for edits and export to various formats.

I recently bought an I Mac and now I try to put my movies (taken with a JVC camcorder, mod extension) in imovie. Because the mod exention is not recognised this isn't working. Can someone tell me how to get these files in imovie?

Importing .wmv files from adobe photoshop elements

My mother-in-law created a slideshow with adobe photoshop elements 6.0 and I can get into into a .wmv file but can not import it to imovie. I saw another post about changing the code on the PC but can't seem to find a place to do that on the program. This is a one time thing and I don't want to pay for a conversion software that I will never use. Any ideas? I thought about just burning a DVD of the slideshow and then trying to import it that way, will that work?

In the slide show editor, Output>PDF would be your only other option, and you would lose music, transitions, etc. if you choose that.
