Import modified EDD into template document

Hi guys.
I have a dtd file that i have to modify.
i t contains the following element:
<!ELEMENT Pubinfo (Pubdate, Pubnumber)>
I modified it in this way:
<!ELEMENT Pubinfo (Pubdate, Pubnumber?)>
so now the Pubnumber is optional and not mandatory.
I opened the dtd on framemaker (7.x) and then saved it to optain an edd file.
I got a template file that use the edd file i just modified so i have to update the template file to use the modified edd.
so i open both files and then i do: import element definitions and then choose my modified edd from the list and framemaker says that the edd files was imported correctly. Now if i open a file to modify and choose to use my template, the document still require the Pubnumber element to be mandatory.
It seems that the modifications i made on the edd and reimported on the template doesn't take effect.
Can anyone help me please?. Is there something wrong on what i'm doing?
Thanks in advance.

Two comments on the process you describe:
1) You say you open the DTD. I assume you opened it with StructureTools > Open DTD rather than simply opening it as a file.
2) Opening the EDD and then using StructurreTools > Import DTD to add the ? to the general rule is correct. Remember, though, that simply changing and saving the EDD will not update existing documents or your template. You must import element definitions from the modified EDD (or from a file into which those definitions have been imported) into the template and existing documents.

  • Importing DITA 1.2 EDDs into templates

I have been modifying the DITA 1.2 EDDs for my custom features and switching in my template customizations for tags and page layout. I understand the text insets, the need to modify the inset eddmod files and update the text insets in the referencing files. However, I can't figure out the order of precedence among the EDDs and which templates to import them into to get the full set. If I import one EDD into the basetopic.template, I get errors about elements that are referenced but not defined. I try to import EDDs that define those elements to whittle down the list, but then a subsequent EDD import takes me back to more elements that are not defined. This result makes me think that importing definitions is not an accumulative process as with importing formats but a wipeout process, as in losing all memory of element definitions previously imported. Can somebody explain how this is supposed to work? It's a lot more complicated than previous versions of DITA.
    Susan

    Susan,
You've asked two questions: one about EDDs in general and one about FM
    10's DITA 1.2 EDDs.
On the first point, you are correct. Importing element definitions is
not cumulative and this differs from importing various formats. The reason
for this behavior is that, unlike paragraph formats or variable
definitions, for example, element definitions are intertwined. It doesn't
do any good to import the definition of a single element unless you also
have element definitions for all the other elements that are mentioned
within that definition. Furthermore, a cumulative approach could leave you
with "orphan" element definitions in the element catalog for elements that
are no longer reachable in a valid structure. Therefore each EDD must be
complete in itself, containing definitions for all the needed elements.
If you want to be able to change some but not all element definitions,
you need to modify the definitions of those elements in your EDD, deleting
those that are no longer needed and adding new ones as necessary. Since an
EDD is a FrameMaker document, you can anticipate some possible changes by
using variables and text insets in the EDD so that changing the variable
definitions or inset material makes it simpler to make some kinds of changes.
And since the DITA 1.2 EDDs use exactly these techniques--variables and
text insets--that takes us to your second question. Before considering the
DITA 1.2 EDDs, look at the DITA 1.2 DTDs. DITA 1.2 is not so much a set of
DTDs as a set of building blocks for creating DTDs. DITA 1.2 provides a set
of modules that can be assembled to create complete DTDs. Furthermore, the
modules themselves are customizable, since the parameter entities
referenced within them can be redefined. Notice in the default
structapps.fm that there are several DITA 1.2 applications; they correspond
to various DTDs included in the DITA 1.2 distribution. Look at the
subdirectories of the structure\xml\DITA1.2\app directory; except for the
FrameMaker subdirectory, they correspond to directories in the DITA 1.2
distribution. In fact, each of these FM 10 directories has a DTD
subdirectory which has the modules and complete DTDs that the DITA 1.2
distribution has in the identically named directory. The FM 10 directories
also have subdirectories called edd, rules, and template. These contain
respectively the EDD modules corresponding to the DTD modules and complete
EDDs corresponding to te complete DTDs, the associated r/w rules, and the
    templates for the complete EDDs.
So, if you want to change the template for one of these existing DTDs,
change the EDD modules it uses and possibly the variable definitions within
the complete EDD. If you want to create a template that uses combinations
of the EDD modules that are not provided, create a new EDD with all the
needed modules included as text insets.
I hope this helps. There's more information in the comments at the
beginning of the complete EDDs (that internal documentation is in the
    FrameMaker subdirectory of DITA1.2\app.

  • Import an image into a document

I see this asked on other posts but I don't see an answer so I'm going to ask again...
I'm using Designer 7.0, windows XP pro on a Dell D600 laptop with 1 gig of RAM.
I want to import an image into a docement and the image doesn't appear to be supported. I've tried jpg and tif. Some images will work and others won't. Is there a solution for this?
    Thanks

    Irv,
Thanks for the reply. The images that didn't work were CMYK. When I converted to RGB they worked.
The images that didn't work were coming up with random grey scale colors.
    Thanks again,

  • Why does Aperture crash when importing modified image into Photoshop CS2?

I have been using Aperture 2.1.4 for the past 2 years and really like the interface. But, I've had one nagging problem: I begin by scanning all of my slides with the Nikon Coolscan 4000 and save them as large tiff files @ approx. 55mb each. I then import each slide with a custom color profile into Aperture. I then optimize the image including white balance, levels, and color adjustments. When I want to make additional changes that I'm not able to do in Aperture, I attempt to send the image to Photoshop CS2 for further processing. But, at this point, Aperture crashes. After this, I get a message saying "do you want to re-open Aperture or quit?" Additionally, I often get the message "Aperture has applied new settings. Do want to keep these new settings or use the original settings?" Since I don't know what will happen if I choose "use the new settings," I always select "keep the original settings." And, when I open Aperture again and try, again, to send the image to Photoshop CS2 to edit, Aperture crashes again. Has anyone had the same or similar problem who can give me some ideas of how to solve this issue! Thanks.

    Welcome to the forums!
It sounds like there may be a permissions issue between the two apps, Aperture using one and PS another.
    1. Are you logged in as an administrator?
    You need to be.
    2. Where is your library stored, is it in the picture folder of your user directory?
If so moving it in to the general area of your MacHD may help get over some of these issues.

  • How to get an xml string into a Document w/o escaping mark-up characters?

    Hi,
I am using one of the latest xerces using Java. I am pretty sure I am using xerces-2.
I have an existing Document and I am trying to add more content to it. The new content itself is xml string. I am trying to insert this xml string into the document using document.createTextNode. I am able to insert, but somewhere it is escaping the mark-up characters (<,>,etc). When I convert the document into String, I can see, for example, <userData> instead of <userData>.
There is an alternative option to accomplish this by creating a new document with this xml string, get the root element, import this element into my document. Execution time for this procedure is very high - means, this is very bad in terms of time-wise performance.
Can any help on how to accomplish this (bringing an xml string into a document without escaping mark-up characters) in time-efficient way.

So you want to treat the contents of the string as XML rather than as text? Then you have to parse it.
Or if your reason for asking is just that you don't like the look of escaped text, then use a CDATA section to contain the text.

  • Does adobe have alternatives for inserting photos into templates?

I have just downloaded this software in the hope that I can use some template files. They are eps and elements 13 doesn't support it.
In addition to this the only other thing that I wanted elements for was to remove backgrounds. I can't find a tutorial on that. The only one listed is for CC.
The only use I have for the software is to insert photos into a sublimation template. Do Adobe have an alternative that can do this?

Please review this and get back with issues that need additional clarification:

As for EPS files, Irfanview will open them, and then you can save them as JPEG files and open them in PSE.

  • Importing element definition from an  EDD into a template - does not work

FM 10.0.1 German on Windows XP SP3.
When importing the element definitions from an existing EDD into an existing template, FrameMaker converts the template into a  new EDD.
So the element definitions which are correctly defined do not appear in the template.
The highest level element is than ElementCatalog in the template and not the higherst lvel element defined in the EDD.
In FM9 this was no issue.
Any help is appreciated, I have a deadline and must do some changes in the EDD.

    Lynne,
EDD is english (Version FM7.0), Interface language is German.
    Maybe it´s a localization issue.

    Thomas,
No question the behavior you describe is a bug. However, I am unable to
duplicate it. I created an EDD with two element definitions:
    Element (Container): doc
      Valid as the highest-level element.
      General rule:  (
When I imported element definitions from this EDD into a new portrait
document, FM reports that element a is referenced but not defined and that
b is defined but not referenced. However, with all elements listed, the
element catalog shows a, b, and doc. The metatemplate elements are not
    available.
I wonder if this is a language-dependent problem. Is your EDD German or
English? What about your user interface?
Can you send me a short EDD that fails as you've described?
      Thanks,

Is there a way to import a .pdf into a pages document and have it wrap to a 2nd page?

Are we talking about a spread? ie the pdf spans 2 pages side by side? Like in a magazine centrefold.
That requires you to insert the pdf on both pages, one hanging half over to the right and the other half over to the left.

  • How to import modified files back into Muse

Maybe this is an easy sync issue....hopefully.
I've exported my html files from Muse (after publishing to Biz Catalyst) and want to modify the html, such as ad href's to divs in the slideshow, etc. How can I import these modified html files back into Muse so I can publish back to Business Catalyst?
I realize it's an easy solution to host the exported files on another server, but I'd really like to stay within the Muse/Biz Catalyst environment with updated html's.
    thanks much!!

There isn't a way at this time to import HTML files into Muse and expect it to load in Design mode for a subsequent re-publish. The only kind of editing that Muse supports today (outside of Muse) is through Business Catalyst's In-Browser editing feature but that is limited to editing only text (without any formatting or styles) and foreground images <http://www.adobekb.com/working-with-in-browser-editing_pt01.html>. Feel free to submit your feature request over at our Ideas section.

  • Import CSV into existing document

Numbers seems to do fine at importing a CSV file and creating a new document from it, but I can't seem to find any way to import a CSV file into an existing document as a new table.
I'd like to end up being able to import several CSV files into one document.
    So far I have tried:
    1) Import -> Choose: the Open dialogue greys out any csv files
    2) drag-and-drop from the Finder to an existing Table
    3) drag-and-drop from the Finder to the Sheet sidebar
    4) drag-and-drop from another document to the sidebar
At the moment it looks like the only way to accomplish this is to do an import to a new document, and then cut and paste the entire table from the CSV document into the main document where I want all of these tables to end up. I find that a bit kludgy.
Does anyone know of a better way to do this?

    Matthew,
Open CSV file in Numbers; CTRL-Click tableName in Sheets Pane and Copy, then CTRL-Click in Sheets pane of destination document and Paste.
Not exactly what you wanted but it just takes a few seconds.

  • Table Problems (Cell Shading and Default Format from EDD and Template)

I have two problems related to tables using Structured FrameMaker (Version 10), whilst in-processing XML.
I've designed two different table formats in my Template; Format A with black shading - 30% for THead and 3% for row, and Format B with blue shading - 30% for THead and 3% for row.
If I create a structured document from scratch and insert a table, I get the required Black (30%) and Black (3%) shading.   If I then insert an informaltable, I get the required Blue (30%) and Blue (3%) shading.
Although I've given the two table types different default formats in the EDD - Format A for table and Format B for informaltable - when I open the XML file (normally) from within FrameMaker I notice that all the tables default to Format A (black shading).   When I then import my EDD table should stay as Format A and informaltable should change to Format I.   This doesn't happen; they all stay at Format A.
I can change informaltable by manually applying Format I, this worksI.  Obviously, with long documents which might have hundreds of tables we can't afford the time and manpower to do such things one at a time by hand.
Do any of the Structure gurus have a fix for this, or can someone give me a hint of what I might be doing wrong?
The second, but related question was a general one.   I see that Adobe says
    "Tables
FrameMaker table formats are only partially integrated with the structure model. The content of
a FrameMaker table is always fully structured, but the control over cell border ruling is limited and
there is no structure format control over cell shading."
I believe it could be useful to apply cell shading on an individual cell basis (although I'm not sure whether this is possible at the XML level - where someboddy might give an element an attribute of, say, shading (with options, such as, green, red, blue, yellow all at, say, 30%, with a default of red, for example.
I've seen that there has been mention of plugins to achieve cell shading in structure; does anyone have an experience with such things, more to the point, can anyone point me in the right direction?   I don't mind paying fo a solution which I can implement myself.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated.
    Regards
    Chris

    Hi,
could you please provide some details on the EDD, RWR and some example XML?
My wild guess goes into the direction of the RWR not containing enough information that get written out into XML.
We're using table formatting with shaders too (using an attribute to control the specific formatting of each table) and it works like a charm in FM9 and FM11 when roundtripping.
The context rules are used in the table group (i.e. tgroup element). This might already solve the issue .

  • Urgent - How to add pdf files to template document in multiple sessions?

    Hi, forum!
VERY new to using Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional, so I am reaching out for help.
We have a "template" document with pre-assigned bookmarks.  I need to add multiple PDF files into it, either by inserting pages, adding the complete PDF, and/or extracting pages, then assigning the locations to each individual bookmark.
The ending page count will be about 300 pages, and there is no way that I can create the complete document in one day or one session.
    A) What is the best way to add pages from multiple PDF files into this "template" document?
    B)  Is there a way to add pages in one session, save it out, then add additional pages to the same output document on a different day, etc., without having to "re-add" the previous pages and until I am done and ready to finalize the document?
I would really appreciate a fast response, as my new job kind of depends upon me doing this well...
    Thanks and Merry Christmas!

    Thanks, George!
    I will try your suggestion.
While waiting for a response, I ran into another problem:
Some of the PDF documents I am to work from are "protected," meaning I can read them but not extract any pages or click to add them to a list of files to import...but I need to extract some or all pages from it.  Any suggestions on this?
    Thanks!
