It depends. FCE works with a limited number of codecs, resolutions, etc. Open your .mov file in the QuickTime Player, then open the Movie Inspector (command/I) and see what it says.

Cannot import .mov files into FCE

I bought a new Kodak Zi8 pocket video camera to use to finish a video project because my right hand is in a cast and I cannot use my HD video camera. Unfortunately for me, I have a deadline to meet.
I shot video at 720p and tried to import it into FCE 4.0.1 to edit using Log and Transfer and got the warning message, '"863_0156.MOV" contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media.' I also shot video at 1080p and, of course, cannot import it into FCE either using Log and Transfer.
I am still a relatively new FCE user and would appreciate any suggestions you can give me. I looked in Tom's book (FCE 4 Editing Workshop)on page 73. Will Quicktime Pro 10 convert the files? If so what is the procedure?
I have seen similar questions in this discussion forum on importing .mov files, but I haven't seen a solution that works for me. How can I convert the .mov files to get Log and transfer in FCE to accept them?

This pocket camera record H.264. So the material as to be converted to a format supoported natively by FCE as Apple Intermediate Codec 1080. Search this forum with +MPEG streamclip+ keyword.

I have succesfully installed the MPEG StreamClip & flip4mac into my iMac. So now I can both play wmv files on my iMac as well as importing wmv files into iMovie & FCE.
But now I have another problem:
1) How do I play mpg files on my iMac ?
2) How do I bring import mpg files into FCE ?

Hi there,
I have purchased the MPEG-2 Playback component from the Apple Store.
I can now convert the mpg files to mov using the MPEG StreamClip.
However, I cannot playback the original mpg files using QuickTime Player. I can only playback the original mpg files if I click on the mpg file then goto more info & change open with MPEG StreamClip.
But how do I open with QuickTime MPEG-2 playback ? I do not even know where the OS installed the MPEG-2 Playback component to ?

Cannot Import some iTunes into FCE - not a standard file?

Trying to import some music into FCE from iTunes.
Browsing window only will highlight certain music as "standard files" and only import those songs. Others are"greyed out" and when I switched the files list to "all files" and try to import then I get error message "1 files recognized 0 files access denied 1 unknown"

Ahhhhhhh! It's starting to make sense now. If the CD was properly formatted as an "Audio CD", the tracks should be recorded at 44.1khz. You can use QuickTime Pro, iTunes, SoundTrack Pro (any several other apps) to convert the tracks from the CD to AIF, 48khz, 16 bit Stereo.
If you use iTunes to do it, make sure you set the encoder to AIF (with the proper settings) in iTunes preferences before you begin.
Note that AIF and AIFF are the same - you may see it listed either way, depending on the app.

Importing mov files into iMovie events

This is my first post ever on this site. Here goes!
I am new to iMovie, but have had someone more experienced trying to help but to no avail!
I am trying to import mov files into iMovie Events. However in the file menu there is no "events' option, so I chose 'Import Movies'. But ultimately when I click on the mov files they are greyed out.
The version of iMovie I have is iMovie '08 - 7.1.4
When I first opened iMovie it offered to update to the latest version, but in the end it said 'No updates available'. When I looked into this in the Apple Store, it said you need Mac OSX 10.7 or above to get the latest version. My Mac is 10.6.8, so won't support the latest version. However, can I not still use the version I have? What is wrong here?

And re the types of tracks you mention that iMovie '08 can't import, I don't much about film clips so haven't yet made sense of this, tho I do see that the clips are organised into chapters, so presumably this is 'chapter tracks'?

Is there any way of importing fcp filters into fce?
I have a FCE project but cannot open it in FCP as I have version 5 of FCP and FCE 4. All I want to do is get the 3-way color corrector into FCE.

Interesting question. The 2-way CC filter is a specific feature of FCE vs. the 3-way filter in FCP - it's one of the intentional differences between the two products, by design.
You would breach your license(s) if you found a way to get any of the embedded filters out of FCP, and also if you were to get them into FCE. From the FCP license - +"you may not copy, decompile, reverse engineer, disassemble, modify, or create derivative works of the Apple Software or any part thereof."+
Then there's the also matter of whether or not it would even work, even if it were legal to do what you want to do here.
Suggestion - read "Cheating in Final Cut Express: Better Color Correction on Ken Stone's FCP website. It may help you with the color corrections you want to do in FCE.

Trouble importing movie directly to external hard drive

I have an externall hard drive that I purchased for the purpose of starting an iMovie project on it and then importing movies directly from my camera onto it (via my iMac). I have read on the discussion boards that other people are able to do this. When I try to do it, the movie stutters and has gaps.
I traded out fire wires in case it was that. I also erased the external hard drive and that didn't help either.
The hard drive is an OWC with 400 fire wire on it. Any ideas of what would cause this problem?

I have a canon zr 50, which worked fine before the upgrade to tiger and imovie HD, since the upgrade this camera no longrer works or is supported? http://www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/camcorders.html the zr 40, and 45 are supported which are the same camera but the top of the line zr 50 which only adds an accesory shoe is not. This camera is not old by any standards and barely has a scratch on it and Apple wants me to buy a new camera just so it is supported? What gives?

Your question simply cannot be answered definitively for a given clip because it's the codec that matters, not the wrapper/file extension.
As of one of the 7.x releases, Premiere implemented native support for decoding some codecs within a QuickTime file. But that native support does not extend to the entire universe of codecs that can be stuffed into the wrapper.
So you can either report the codec or simply install QT and see if that enables PPro to import the clip.

Help needed. Can I import MTS files directly into FCE?

I am currently using iMovie, but iMovie doesn't recognise the .MTS files that my Panasonic AG-HMC41E produces.
I was thinking of upgrading to Final Cut Express, but I don't know if that will solve the problem or not.
Can anybody confirm that FCE will enable me to directly import .MTS files?

As far as I have heard, transcoding to Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC) makes a file that scarcely looks different from the original MTS; I should remind you that if you were able to ingest the MTS files directly into iMovie or Final Cut Express, they will do the same thing - transcode to Apple Intermediate Codec; they're just doing it within the interface of a capturing process. When they are ready for editing, they are now AIC. An app like Streamclip or ClipWrap is just helping you get this done outside of FCE or iMovie.
ClipWrap 2 can rewrap your mts file as a MOV and leave it untouched - quality is the same. However, FCE won't edit that without having to render a lot. It's best to transcode it to AIC.
There is a higher quality codec than AIC, called ProRes, but only Final Cut Pro can edit this.

Import 8mm movies directly into Elements 12

Curious to know if it is possible to directly import 8mm movies via a camcorder, through a Canopus ADVC110 analog to digital converter device, directly into Premiere Elements 12? If so, how would that be accomplished, and what are the settings necessary for optimal quality?

Yes you can but I recommend (and always use myself) WinDV or Exsate DV Capture Live. There are no settings in PRE that affect the quality of DV import as it (and the other two tools I've mentioned) capture the complete raw video stream from the digitizer. It is the settings on the digitizer that can affect the quality of that stream and, frankly, I find the Canopus manuals so unhelpful and poorly written that I've always just gone with the defaults.

Problem with "Import"; Trying to move song into FCE

The answer may be deceptively simple, but it eludes me.
In the past I merely dragged/dropped a song from my iTunes folder into FCE to begin my project. The only files I have chosen to date were mp3 files. There was no problem encountered whatsoever.
Today, the song I chose is not allowed into FCE and the only correlation is that I purchased the song in the iTunes music store and it has an extension of m4a. There error message: "File error: unknown file"
What am I missing?
