Import .mov from aperture to FCPX

Hi,
I'm currently using Aperture & Final Cut Pro X (latest versions)
I am storing all movies (.mov h264) Full HD within Aperture. They are stored in various events and files are managed by aperture and stored within the aperture library.
My question is: What is the best way to work with these aperture movie files within Final Cut Pro and how do I best import them into FCPX.
In the past I have exported from Aperture into a folder on the HDD and then imported via FCP to work with the files. I've always used the original media import option within FCPX.
I've notice I can also drag from aperture direct into FCPX and also import via the media browser. How does that compare to what I have been doing.
What's the best option to get work with these files inot FCPX and what's the best import options.
Also, I'm still confussed (no matter how much I read) about original and proxy media. I think I should stick with original as proxy seems to decrease image quality when exporting (in mp4 or mov format HD).
If I do use the media browser or used a referenced file. Should I copy the file to FCP folder or keep where it is. If I keep where it is does it alter the original file when I make changes within FCPX.
Sorry for the questions, they are confussing reading it back. I've tried to search and read a lot about it but not really getting what I need out of it.
Basically - whats the best way to edit .mov file located in Aperture while in FCPX. Do I need to import, copy to FCPX folder and what settings do I use.

I'm in the same boat, just beginning to work with Final Cut Pro X with many movie files in Aperture.
With some movie files, it works fine to merely drag from the FCPX Photos browser into an event. But for some older movie files, FCPX says there's no movie file there. (All of these play fine in Aperture.) I think this is because the files are referenced movies and FCPX needs self-contained movies.
Here are two ways to deal with this, in my experience:
This is the simplest:
1. Select the file in Aperture and choose File > Export Original.
2. Import into FCPX
(You can't use the Edit in External Editor command, and there's no option to export a movie directly to FCPX, but you might be able to automate this process with Keyboard Maestro or Automator.)
Another method:
1. Drag the movie from Aperture to the Desktop.
2. Open the movie in QuickTime Player 7 Pro. (QuickTime Player X won't work.)
3. Save As Self-contained movie.
4. Import to FCPX.
http://store.apple.com/us/product/D3380Z/A/quicktime-7-pro-for-mac-os-x
File size example:
In Aperture, the file is listed as 11 MB.
After dragging to the desktop, the file is 4K. After exporting original from Aperture, the file is 11MB.
QuickTime Player X shows the dragged file as 4K and shows only a black screen, though it acts as if the movie is playing.
FCPX also shows the dragged file as 4K.
QuickTime Player 7 Pro very briefly puts up a dialog "Searching for movie data in file "DSCN1234.MOV" then opens the file fine. (I don't know if this will work with the basic QTP 7 without the Pro registration.)
After saving as self-contained movie, the file size is 11 MB.
It's odd that Aperture can handle these files and FCPX can't. I've posted an enhancement request to Apple.

Ok, so I;ve noticed that when I import using the media browser (photo icon) - Inititally these files are refrenced back to apeture libary, however once transcoded it puts it onto PRORES format and puts a file that's about 1000% bigger (120mb original for 1min file to 1gb) I'm left with a "optimised" media folder with the 1gb file and original media folder with the 120mb file.

  • Problem with importing videos from Aperture

I was able to import videos from Aperture within FCPX.  However, when I tried to import some older videos, the following error message appeared:
    "No importable files
None of the selected files or folders can be imported.  Change the selection and try again."
I noticed that all the video files older than about three months didn't work, and all the newer files worked, regardless what camera it was from (D800, iPhone, m4/3 camera)
I opened up the aperture library package and compared the permission for one video file that I could import, and one that I couldn't.  They have the same permissions, so it isn't a permission issue.  I tried exporting the problem video from Aperture and importing it into FCPX, and it accepted it.
The other thing I've noticed that is for the files that I imported from Aperture library, the video files in the Original Media folder are only around 250 KB.  It seems that they are only aliases.  All the more reason I need to find a way to drag videos from Aperture into FCPX, as the files aren't duplicated.
Does anybody know a solution to this problem?
    Thanks a lot!

Aperture drag'n'drop export only creates reference movies (which can break!)
    Background of your issue:
If you simply drag your video file(s) from the Aperture window to the Desktop (in my case a MP4 from my Galaxy Nexus, the original having 70 MB), Aperture does not copy the master or the version file, but instead it creates a reference movie file, which is a very small video container file (in my case: MP4, 26 KB) with no AV-content but only a reference to your master video file in your Aperture library, ~/Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary/Masters/YYYY/MM/DD/YYYYMMDD-hhmmss/filename.
So by principle it acts like an "alias", but technically it is not a filesystem alias (filepath, ID within filesystem (inode), metadata), but a so called reference movie. If you meanwhile deleted/manipulated the master file from the Aperture Library, or changed something from the filepath (volume name, home directory name, etc) import in Final Cut Pro will fail of course, as it loads a mere reference movie, and fails to load the AV-content, as the master movie file cannot be found at the given filepath anymore.
Solution 1 (for the "tidy" users):
Make sure the filepath to your Aperture Library does not change (volume name, user name, custom library name), and hopefully Apple does not change their Aperture Library filepath scheme in future updates. Then the reference movie will remain pointing to a valid master file.
    Solution 2:
    In Aperture, select the file(s)
    File > Export Master (CMD-SHIFT-S)
Save file(s) to your desired destination
Import them into within Final Cut Pro
Of course this creates unnecessary duplicate content, which is specially painful with video files, which tend to be large.
    Solution 3 (advanced users):
Locate the master file (within the Aperture Library.aplibrary bundle) and import that in Final Cut Pro.
The import dialogue of many Mac OS X apps does not allow browsing into bundles.
A possible work around is to open the bundle in Finder (right click > Show package contents), locate the file, and then drag'n'drop it onto the import dialogue of Final Cut Pro.

  • How do you import iPhone video from Aperture into FCPX?

I need to import some iPhone 4 video files from Aperture into FCPX. For some reason there seems to be no way to do this. Please do not suggest I import the videos directly from my iPhone. #1 the videos are already off my phone and #2 I have no desire to import all my iPhone videos separately into FCPX when I am already importing them into Aperture along with my photos.

You have to drag them from their location, (finder or iPhoto etc) into one of the events in the event list of FCP X.

  • When i import movies from my iPhoto app to my iMovie app does it make a copy (thereby using double the hard disk space) or does it link to my iPhoto app? The reason i ask is i want to archive all my videos from iPhoto/iMovie. HELP!

When i import movies from my iPhoto app to my iMovie app does it make a copy (thereby using double the hard disk space) or does it link to my iPhoto app? The reason i ask is i want to archive all my videos from iPhoto/iMovie. Do i need to archive the movies in iPhoto AND iMovie? HELP!

Hi - I'm having the same problem with freeing up space on the HD. If I can't free space if I'm using any part of the clip, how can I split up the clips so that I can discard the part I won't use? This is crazy! I have only 4 GB of free space left!
Also, I've tried to transfer the project file to my external HD but I keep getting an error saying I can't transfer it. I've been told this is because I don't have enough space on the HD for the transfer. I tried a similar transfer with another computer with plenty of HD space but the same error occurred. Is there a way to break up the project file into small pieces for the transfer (I'm thinking the whole movie file is just too big)?
    Thanks for any info!

  • How can I import pictures from aperture into iPhoto

Since moving to mountain lion OSX, I can't find a way for importing pictures from aperture into iphoto. There used to ba a tab under archive in iPhoto where you could view the aperture library and select pictures to import them into iPhoto. This tab has diappeared. Could anyone tell me how it's done now?

I noticed indeed that you can change the library under "archive" in iPhoto but when I choose aperture library I can't find the same structure of albums as in aperture.
Sorry I don't understand this. What is "archive"?

  • After upgrade to IOS8 can't import photos from Aperture

I upgraded to IOS8, reset my iPad to factory settings and reinstalled all my apps from scratch.
When go into iTunes and I select to import photos from Aperture on my Mac it hangs.
I have an old iPhoto library on my Mac and if I select photos from that it works.
I have switched off everything to do with iCloud after seeing some posts that this might be causing the problem, but not a solution for me.
(I have over 28,000 photos in my Aperture library).

Did you turn on iCloud Photo Library? I suspect it may remove the ability to sync photos and videos between Macs and iOS devices.

  • Problem with importing movies from my Sony HDR-SR5

Did your "Camcorder" ever worked with iMovie? If so, what version were your running?
What version of iMovie are you currently running: iMovie 8.0.5 or iMovie 8.0.6?
What version of the OS are you currently running: 10.6.2 or 10.6.3?

  • When importing photos from aperture photos are blurry

I have been making a video and up to now no problems. Then today i was working on it and when i started adding some more photos from aperture they were fuzzy and blurry.
In aperture they are crisp and clear but the minute i put them in imovie they are blurry and not useable.
I have imported photos from aperture and iphoto both and had no issues so not sure what is going on today.

I think I just figured this out.
Go into Aperture preferences and go to "previews" tab.  Set "photo preview" to "don't limit" and turn the quality all the way up.  Then select all your photos, go to the "photos" menu, hold down the option key and click "generate previews".
It appears that the library sharing is just using the generated previews from Aperture which default to poor quality.  You need to turn up the quality and then force a re-render of all your previews.  iMovie should pick this up (but won't update your slideshow...).
Yeah, I'm pretty disappointed by those defaults.   Wasted hours of my time as I rebuilt the slideshow with better versions of my photos.
    Hope that helped.
