Import Movies from Hi8 using USB

Is there any way to import movies from a video Hi* camera using a USB cable? The camera does not have a firewire connection.

Hi - I'm having the same problem with freeing up space on the HD. If I can't free space if I'm using any part of the clip, how can I split up the clips so that I can discard the part I won't use? This is crazy! I have only 4 GB of free space left!
Also, I've tried to transfer the project file to my external HD but I keep getting an error saying I can't transfer it. I've been told this is because I don't have enough space on the HD for the transfer. I tried a similar transfer with another computer with plenty of HD space but the same error occurred. Is there a way to break up the project file into small pieces for the transfer (I'm thinking the whole movie file is just too big)?

Looks like it records in AVI format at 25 fps. I think that should import to iMovie OK - if not it should import to iPhoto and then be available in the iMovie Events Library under "iPhoto Videos". Importing shouldn't be a problem based on this extract from the web page:
"The glasses can be hooked directly to a PC with the supplied USB cable to view the video, or when using the Micro SD card, it can be inserted into a card reader to watch footage."

I to would love to know if anyone has found a way to do this.... I purchased several bluray dads, and normally the software gives you the option to use the "ultraviolet" streaming and/or download a copy to iTunes, but these all seem to be Flixter or nothing. I contacted the folks at "UV," "Flixter" and Warner Bros as well, and they all told me "tough luck" on my request to get iTunes versions. Flixter even went so far as to tell me, "...we cannot provide digital copies in every media format for certain films for a variety of logistical reasons." which is total BS, and they know it.
The problem I have is that SOME of these bluray DVDs offer the option of iTunes and other do not, but this is NOT specifically identified on the package -- you really don't have any way of knowing until you open the package and attempt the download. Some will offer you the choice, others will not, but the package, in my experience, never says, 'This will NOT work with iTunes."
This really should be the foundation for a class-action lawsuit against the studios who do this BS "bait and switch" to try to force you to use a less then desirable format or poor quality 'streaming' service. I realize the studios want to make more $$ and that means screwing over Apple/iTunes and by default the consumer, by forcing a shoddy product they make more profit on.... No different than an electronics store pushing you to purchase 'brandX' because it has a higher profit margin for them... except that YOU HAVE THE CHOICE.
Apple could make a killing by accepting their codes for discounts on the iTunes versions... say half-price... just a thought.
But seriously, to all those out there, this really should be put into a class action suit..... I would be on-board.

Can't import movies from photobooth into imovie

In iMovie 11 (v9.0.4), our network users are unable to import movies from the isight camera. (File, Import from Camera). As soon as you click on "capture", then use the default event name, you get an error:
"You may not have permissions to write to /Network/Servers/rbserver.lan/SERVER_USERDATA/iMovie Events.localized."
I've tried creating this directory on the local machine, per this suggestion: http://lists.apple.com/archives/macos-x-server/2010/Apr/msg00305.html but to no avail...
Do you know how to fix this problem?

I can't help you with your server question, but here is how I move and import video clips from Photo Booth into iMovie over my LAN:
(1) Use the Photo Booth > File > Export menu command
to create the actual clip I will move.
(2) Quit Photo Booth.
(3) File transfer the exported Photo Booth clip to the Mac that will do the iMovie work.
(4) Use the iMovie > File > Import > Movies... menu command
to import the clip into iMovie.
(5) Clean up (throw away) unneeded clips on both Macs.

I used iMovie 11 last night on OS 10.8.2 ... spent some time but it finally recognized my Sony Handycam SR-12.
bottom line:
open iMovie
connect Handycam
import videos
took 3 or 4 times but it worked in the end.

Importing Movies from Canon SD1000?

I Can't import a movie taken on the Canon SD1000.
Canon says this feature is not supported for Mac OSX.
Is there any way to work around this?
I tried iViewMedia Pro but that didn't work either.

I've been able to import movies from the SD1000 using Image Capture just fine. I just couldn't play them using Quicktime. (Quicktime says it needs some software and takes you to Apple's site but doesn't tell you what software you need! Duh...) Anyway Perian (mentioned above) did the trick!

Playing imported movies from 5dmk2 (1080p HD)

I recently bought the camera connection kit, and it does exactly what it says (and a bit more). However, on importing movies from my 5Dmk2 (they are HD 1080p), I get a grey icon in Photos and can't play them. This is strange because the iPad can play them in other ways:
1. If I use Airsharing to copy from my iMac to iPad, then they play (don't know if Airsharing does some sort of conversion or has is own player)
2. (probably not approved, but it works)...jailbroken ipad and use of iFile to browse to import location then click on movie and it plays.
So, why not in the Photo app???

The photo app doesn't play videos the way other apps play videos. If you ever looked at a video on the photo you will notice the skipping uses pictures and not a time bar (you know when you fast forward or press pause a grey bar comes up it only uses pictures)
1080p is the highest right now and the ipad can't take a bunch of pictures of the video and post it in the way it needs to be so it is just a grey picture. If the iPad had a camera capable of 1080p that would probably be fixed.

Having trouble importing movies from my Sony HDR-SR5. The computer is reading HD camcorder but Iphoto is coming up and not Imovie. I don't have any still pics and SD movies. When I go into imovie camcorder does not show up. Any suggestions?

Well, if you mean transfer movies from the iMovie events folder, go to that folder as in Finder-movies-imovie events, and drag a copy to your card.
Or, you could finish making the movie, and drag the .mov file from your desktop or wherever you have it.
