Import non iPhoto picture into iMovie

Hi
First time poster, long time lurker.
is there anyway to use non iPhoto pictures in iMovie.
As a professional tog, I have never really used or liked iPhoto, so have mine catalogued and filed elsewhere.
Hope you guys can help.

It's you, and people do mind you butting in. Stop hijacking other people's threads, it is not the done thing.
If you have a question start you own post, jumping in on another thread just causes confusion.
When you are in iMovie you select the small button that shows a camera on it (on the right hand side between the Music note and the 'T'. You should then see your iPhoto library, and be able to drag photos from here into your project. This is a standard operation in iMovie, if this does not work then you have some other issue on your machine that you have created during the transfer of the content from your PC.

  • Import non-iPhoto photo into iMovie

How do you import a non-iPhoto photo into iMovie? I cannot figure out a way to do this.
I use Adobe's Lightroom for all of my photo needs and would like to avoid iPhoto if possible.

You can drag and drop a photo into your project from the Finder. JPEG or PNG will work best.

  • How do I import my iPhoto library into iMovie?

For some unknown reason I am not able to import all my pictures and video clips into iMovie. I do not know what is happening to my Mac. What did I do to it ? I still have plenty of storage space on my laptop. I have a Mid 2012 13" Macbook Pro running Mavericks OS X 10.9.4. I almost forgot to mention that iMovie quits unexpectingly when I am in the middle of a video project. Thanks in advance for any help.

There is no way you would import an iPhoto Library into iMovie. What you can do is access the Library from iMovie.
So, what exactly are you trying to do, and what goes wrong? What error messages do you get? What version of iMovie and iPhoto?

  • How do you import a non iphoto pic into imovie?

There seems to be no way of getting a photo into iMovie except by placing it in iPhoto first. This is cumbersome if all your doing is pulling something from a drive.
There is no File, Import like there is for movies.
If you drag and drop the photo from finder into the project pane, things do not work as expected (for example, the context menu will not come up when dropped on a clip for green screen).
    Any ideas?

    Hi,
I am having the same problem. The video I took appears as a .MOV file and nothing seems strange about it (plays in iTunes and iPhoto). I tried copying it to the desktop and importing, and that says nothing to import. It also does not appear in the iPhoto Movie browser in iMovie. Is there some sort of security setting that wouldn't allow an iChat video clip to appear in iMovie?
    I am using iChat 5.0.3 (745) and iMovie 8.0.6 (821).

  • Importing movies-- iPhoto or into iMovie???

I am a bit confused on which way is the best way....
Importing my movies into iPhoto and then into iMovie, which it seems to do on its own whenever you launch iMovie....
    or
Importing directly into iMovie and not have anything imported into iPhoto...
Why is one better than the other, in your opinion??? And, if you do option 1, does it have two copies on your hard drive or is it only a reference address from iMovie to the location in iPhoto???

bumpage - I am a new mac user and a prior MS enthusiast, builder, fixer. So I know my way around 'puters. And I'm loving the switch to Macintosh (that's what it was called when I was a kid). Everything's easier, and streamlined. But I'm having the same problem. I think (but am not sure) that I've had videos imported in both iPhoto and iMovie 11's even though I try hard as I can to not get dupes and I'm positive now I have 2 copies of half of the videos I imported from my iPhone4. I don't care how many thumbnails there are, or will be made, or where they are, or where they can be viewed... but I only want ONE original .MOV file.
What's the fastest way to find and eliminate these (or any dupes) on my MBP (or Snow Leopard/iLife'11)? Do it somehow through iMovie and iPhoto, or do through finder? I know I said I can put together a non-Mac PC blindfolded and drunk, but I'm still learning, albeit fast, how Mac's operate.
Can you believe I got it in November and I'm still getting used to "mounting" disc images, etc.?
Anywho...any help y'all could provide would be much appreciated. I just started deleting what I thought were dupes in iPhoto's root (master) subfolders because I was sure I always imported into iMovie first and got ALL of them every time (before firing up iPhoto to import pics), but then I spot-checked some of the .MOV's that I just dropped in the TRASH (searched for them elsewhere on my MBP - assuming they'd show up in the iMovie library folder/subfolder system) and found they only resided in the iPhoto libary folder system. Thankfully I just "PUT BACK" all of them until I can figure out a logical, efficient way to do this both retro-actively as well as going forward. I almost lost precious, precious memories of my 6-year-old little girl. I just want to get this right.
Because apparently the method(s) I'm employing are no good.
But I don't think it's all me. I mean why can't Apple just make it so that iPhoto imports ONLY photos, and iMovie imports ONLY movie clips???? Is that too much to ask? I mean you could still pull in thumbnails and add movie clips to a slideshow in iPhoto; or pull in pictures to use in a video project you are making, but how can the neat and tidiness of Mac-dom be so easily cluttered, especially by a conscientious user like myself who is being super extra careful and methodical -afraid of missteps everywhere [given that I'm extra wary while learning the advantages and pitfalls of Macs].
Not to mention...iPhoto (before an apparent recent update), would show the .MOV thumbnails in the "Import" dialog that shows when I plug in my iPhone, and would even have them selected, but would skip importing them (logically, if I'm in iPhoto, why tf would I want to import movies?) Now all the sudden I say import all and it actually does.
Give me a break here. I thought I was done picking peoples' brains on 'boards when I got a Mac. Hopefully this is my only gripe for the next year.
    Thanks for listening/reading. Much Obliged.

  • Keep transitions intact when importing mult. iPhoto images into iMovie HD?

Is it possible to import a completed iPhoto album show with hundreds of images with random transitions between each into iMovie while still keeping the random transitions between the iPhoto images intact?
If not, is there a way to select random transitions between the still images in iMovie once they get there rather than select and create each and every one of the transitions myself?
    Thanks!

Because iMovie and iPhoto serve different purposes, each has features not found in the other. There is no way in iMovie to automatically add random transitions to slideshows, for example, while iPhoto offers that feature. (In iMovie, the assumption is the user wants absolute control over such features, wants to control each frame of the slideshow.)
That doesn't prevent you from having your cake and eating it too, however. Remember, many of the iLife apps allow you move stuff around between them.
For example, you can create a slideshow containing random transitions in iPhoto, export it to a QuickTime movie, import that movie to iMovie, add titles and songs, add some video from a video camera, add a voiceover narration, add some Chapter Markers, add an iMovie theme to introduce each chapter, then send the iMovie project off to iDVD to burn a DVD that plays on a TV.
So, check out the File > Export command in iPhoto. Set the exported movie to 640x480. The command will export your iPhoto slideshow to an MPEG-4 type QuickTime movie. Create a new MPEG-4 type iMovie project and import that movie to it. (Use the disclosure arrow towards the bottom of the window where you name the new iMovie project to select the MPEG-4 project type.)

  • How to? importing non-encrypted DVDs into iMovie

new to Macs - my Sony digital video camera does not have a Firewire port. I'm thinking of having my mini DV tapes of my son converted onto DVD. Does anyone know of a way to get DVDs imported into iMovie? Is there a better way than converting my mini DVs to DVD?

Yes. iLink is Sony's name for FireWire.
I'm pretty sure your camera has it, though it probably did not come with the cable.
    The cable you want is a 4 to 6 pin FireWire Cable such as this one;
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00005NIMR/sr=8-1/qid=1145483134/ref=sr11/002-1498406-8363234?%5Fencoding=UTF8
No need to buy a Sony branded one.

  • Shuffle or Randomize iPhoto pictures into iMovie for DVD

I want to take pictures in iPhoto and put them in iMovie for a slideshow that I will be putting on a DVD. I want to randomize or shuffle the order when I am putting these pictures from iPhoto to iMovie. I know I could manually do it but I have a lot of photos. Please tell me how I can do it, or what program would I need to achieve this.

  • Itunes won't import all iPhoto pictures into iPhone or iPad

Don't know where this belongs so I posted it in the iPhoto group.
I recently updated to Lion (10.7.2). I currently use iPhoto 9.2.1 with itunes 10.5. I sync my my iPhoto pics (all events/albums/faces/etc) to my iPhone 3GS and iPad 2 (both iOS5). I recently imported three events to iPhoto. I have tried to sync my new events to my devices but the photo tally for each event is "0" in itunes. The events do not show on my devices after syncing. However, they still exist in my iPhoto library.
Additionally, when I recently tried to export the three events to a thumb drive, I received a message that the volume for those photos could not be found. I tried Find>Reveal in Finder but both options are greyed out. To remedy this problem I trashed the three events in iPhoto, deleted my iPod cache and reimported the three events. However, this did not fix anything. Essentially my new events are in my iPhoto library but they aren't "on my computer." If anyone can please help I will appreciate it!
PS - This seems to have happened after I updated my devices to iOS5. Would this have anything to do with it?

Hi, good news: it syncs again!
I wasn't sure how to reinstall everything (suggestions from different discussions) so I firstly deleted the "Archive" and all picture folders from iPhone:
Uncheck  sync in the iTunes tab "Pictures" and "apply".  iTunes asks whether to keep or to delete all previously synchronised pictures: answer "delete". (Or "remove", my iTunes speeks German :-))
Then check the button synchronise again and voila, it works. Magic, is'nt it?

  • I imported videos from photo into iMovie when I set up iMovie (obvious mistake) and now iMovie doesn't work properly, nor can I move specific videos into a folder where I want them. How do I fix this?

I imported videos from photo into iMovie when I set up iMovie (obvious mistake) and now iMovie doesn't work properly, nor can I move specific videos into a folder where I want them. How do I fix this? I even tried deleting iMovie, bought a new copy and installed it, but the folder "iPhoto Videos" is still there and I can't get new clips loaded to iMovie, especially where I want them. Please help.

The iPhoto Videos do occasionally have problems. I've seen a lot of people write messages to this Discussion group describing similar problems. The only thing that seems to get around this problem is to pull the video clips out of iPhoto then import them directly into iMovie. Once the troubles with iPhoto Videos starts, I haven't yet seen anyone write back with something that they did to fix it.
The most difficult part of doing this is the movies in iPhoto might be a little difficult to track down. But you can create a smart alum that does that for you. Go to iPhoto > File Menu > New Smart Album:
Set the first pulldown menu to keyword, second to contains, then in the last box type Movie with a capital 'M'. Then click OK. This smart album more or less does as search of the whole iPhoto Library and only displays items that match your search tearm of "Movie" exactly. In that smart album then you can find the original Movies you want to move out of iPhoto and into iMovie, <CTRL> click on the Movie clip, then choose Reveal in Finder. That will jump you out of iPhoto temporarily and into the iPhoto Library folder. From there you can move that movie file to the desktop. Move all the clips you want, once they're all collected up go to iMovie and go to the File Menu > Import Files. Then point it to the desktop where you moved your video clips.
This will put all those videos into an Event folder in iMovie and bypass iPhoto Videos altogether.

  • Unable to import video from camcorder into iMovie HD

I am using a Mac mini PowerPC G4 (1.5). I recently bought a Sony Handycam DCR-DVD 106E camcorder that uses DVD discs. The camcorder has no Firewire (iLink) output so I have inserted the DVD into my external DVD writer/player. I can play the footage via the Mac Mini's DVD player software but I cannot import the video clips into iMovie HD.
The icons on the DVD appear to be PC files and are not compatible. Does anyone know how I can take off the footage I have shot and get it into iMovie HD, please?
My secondary thought is that maybe I need to be able to convert the footage clips into Quicktime files, maybe, but I don't know how to go about this, if, indeed, that is the solution.
    Please, please help
    regards, Huguenot

Your camcorder is incompatible with iMovie 5, which is designed to use DV streams from tape, imported via firewire.
If your camcorder uses DVD disks it likely produces files in mpeg2 format, which is the standard, compressed, final delivery format of a DVD and is not intended for further editing, and cannot be imported into iMovie 5.
I am a bit puzzled as to why you chose that camcorder!
Ideally you should take it back and exchange it for a camcorder that records onto mini DV tape and which has a firewire output.
As it is, firstly you cannot import the footage due to lack of firewire. Secondly, in order to use iMovie at all you will have to convert the mpeg2 files into a DV files which is what iMovie uses.
    For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
which is free, but you must also have the Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
But any way you do it, there will be penalty in terms of quality.

  • How do I insert a picture into iMovie regardless of aspect ratio

When I insert a picture, i either have the choice of cropping the picture or having black bars on the sides. How can I insert a picture into imovie and not be dictated based on the aspect ratio. thanks

    nope, never.
    look:
    example #1: a 1:1 pic in a 16:9 screen
    option A bars l/r
    option B cat-off
example #2: a wiiiide screen pic in a 16:9 screen
    option A bars t/b
    option B catcut off
and you don't want kitty look like that:
(1:1 aspect ratio distorted to make fit onto a 16:9 screen)

  • Importing non-unicode data into unicode 10gR2 database

    Hi:
I will have to import non-unicode data into unicode 10gR2 database. The systems the data is coming from are the following: CODA, Timberline, COMMS, CMS, LIMS. These are all RDBMS, sql-enabled systems. We are talking about pretty big amounts of data (a couple hundred GB combined).
Did anybody go through a similar exersize?
I know I'll have to setup nls_length_semantics to CHAR.
What other recommendations could you guys give?
    TIA,

I think "nls_length_semantics" isn't mandatory at this point, and you must extract a little quantity of information from every source and do some probes injecting them into the Oracle10g database.
