Import of songs results in skipping, file corruption

Apologies in advance for the length of this post, but I want to provide very specific details...
One month ago I upgraded a WIndows XP machine to Windows 7 64-bit. All of the iTunes MP3 files were backed up on a second hard drive in the machine. After the upgrade, I reinstalled the latest version of iTunes, then attempted to import the music files into the library.
This took place without a hitch, but within days I had found that greater than 75% of the files were now corrupt. When listening to music, songs would skip, cut out for 10 seconds, or just quit playing. This would happen on iPods I had set up with these files, my iPhone, and even when playing the files on iTunes on the Win7 64b computer.
Fortunately, my entire library is also backed up on another Win XP machine in the same room, on a network. So I deleted all of the files from the Win7 computer, then imported from the WinXP machine. Mind you, all of the songs play just fine on the XP machine. When I finished importing the 4000 tracks... same problem on the Win7 machine. Corrupt tracks, skipping, cutting out, scratching, etc. It sounded like a bad LP.
Over the past month, I have found that if I delete a corrupt song file, then import that song from the XP machine, it fixes the song. So I can actually put use-able tracks on the Win7 machine. But frankly, I do not have time to import 4000 songs one song at a time.
This past weekend I stripped the library again, then tried importing around 30-40 songs at a time from the XP computer. Same problem. I don't know what the cutoff is, but it's somewhere between 1 and about 30 songs at a time.
I am terribly frustrated by this issue. I have scoured the message boards looking for any ideas as to how to have a non-corrupt library on the Win7 machine. I would like to upgrade the XP machine to Win7, but frankly, I'm scared I'm going to lose my library. Until I know I have a safely backed up set of files that will play without skips, that isn't happening.
Any ideas? Anybody?!?!

I found a workaround for this problem...
I ended up backing up the entire iTunes folder plus all of my tracks to an external hard drive, then moving them over to the new Win 7 computer. I then had to tell the iTunes Library to find the files again, but it incorporated them without using the import process.
This worked well, no more skipping. But, an album I had recently purchased from iTunes and downloaded onto the Win 7 computer lost half the tracks. At first I was really ticked off, because in spite of backing it up EXACTLY LIKE APPLE SAYS TO, the mp3 files were corrupted. Then I realized I still had the entire album intact on my iPhone, so I was able to sync the phone with the computer and move the valid files back on to the computer. Problem solved... though only due to luck.
Apple really needs to fix this issue. I don't what the problem is with Win 7 64-bit, but it's ridiculous that importing files using Home Share corrupts them on Win7 64-bit computers. All that is happening is a file is moving from one machine to another. If iTunes has to shuffle them around and in the process destroys them, that's just ridiculously sad. Amidst all of the horror stories out there regarding iTunes, this is my first negative experience with it personally, but it is a crippling feature that the software engineers should find completely unacceptable.

  • Importing from LiveType results in Unknown File error

Title says it all; I've tried re-installing from the original disc, and made sure that LiveType was selected to be installed. Any ideas?

I dragged in the MP4 files, and clicked Sequence > Render Selection> Both.
I think this is more of an installation error, like some package didn't get installed. When it was first installed, it kept on crashing because the ProFX framework wasn't installed. I had to dig inside the installer packages, found the package that installed ProFX, opened it up, manually extracted the files from the .tar.gz archive, and put them in place. Then it worked. I think this issue is of a similar nature.

  • Automator (or anything) to mass transfer one file at a time, or skip over corrupted files?

I'm currently recovering files (using Disk Warrior) from a failing hard drive, but when OS X hits a corrupted file ("Error -36"), it cancels the entire transfer, rather than skipping over it.  Basically, I have to transfer one file at a time, which, on a 2TB hard drive, is going to be insanely tedious, so I was wondering if there's an automation that can transfer one file at a time, or some other way to transfer files that won't stop mid-process?

in my experience, people who know enough unix to understand what you suggested rarely ask questions about automator.  Auto-mechanics don't generally need advice on choosing an auto repair shop.
Applescript is probably the easiest way to go with this.  I don't know what the file structure of the recovered documents is, but in general you'd run something like this:
set sourceFolderPath to "/path/to/recovered items folder/"
    set destinationFolderPath to "/path/to/destination folder/"
    tell application "System Events"
set theFiles to files of folder sourceFolderPath
              repeat with thisFile in theFiles
                        try
-- move files one-by-one in an error block
                                  move thisFile to folder sourceFolderPath
                        on error
-- you can put something here to log the skipped files or display a dialog, if you like
                        end try
              end repeat
    end tell

I have the same problem.  I recently moved my music from a Vista PC to a new Laptop with an external CD drive. It will copy one song from the CD and it will show in the Music file and then I get the message ' Error importing a CD - Folder not found'.  I must unplug the CD drive and plug it back in.  I have seen no fix for this problem.

Thanks, Ian. Yeah, that's how I do it now...or with the controls in the left side pane. Still, I would have liked that quick on-the-spot edit capability...especially while sketching.

Sorry Mark, you are out of luck as it does not do that - it works the same as L8. The way I would achieve that with more accuracy and control would be to route all the tracks you want to fade to a Bus then use volume automation on the bus. To do this you will need to add a standard audio track, then re-assign it using (Control Click on the track header) to the Bus track. You can then automate volume/plugins etc on the Bus track.

  • Canon 7D Imported Files Corrupted.

Every now and them when I import files created with a Canon 7D they show up as corrupted in Lightroom.
I can read and process the files using Canon's Digital Photo Professional.  The last time this happened
I deleted the files from the LR catalog then re-imported them and they were ok. This time that does not
seem to be working. I've tried to import the files from two different hard drives.  The files were copied
directly from the card to the two hard drives.
I've used digestIT to calculate the MD5 Hash of the files files on the card and after copying them to the
hard drives.  The hashes are the same so I'm assuming that the file copy did not corrupt the files.
I've also import the files directly from the card.  When I did this only two of the files showed up
    as corrupted.
Finally I import the files using the same card and card reader using my laptop.  Every thing works, no
file corruption.  The laptop is running Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit and LR 3.3 32 bit.
Any ideas of what may be causing this problem?  How do I fix it?
    System details:
    LR: 3.3 64 bit
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.
    Canon 7D: Firmware 1.0.9
LR Cat: New catalog create with LR 3.3 64 bit.
Below are images of what the files look like in LR and DPP.  The last images is what happened
when I imported the files directly from the card.
    Thanks

    martin-s and DdeGannes thanks.
I think I have a better handle on what's happening.  I think my storage device is the problem.  I guess it could still be
the memory but I would expect the system to be unstable if this were the case.
I imported another set of photos today from a different card.  Sure enough one of the files showed up as corrupted in LR.  I then
    did the following:
    1. Attempted to open the file using DPP.  The file also showed up as corrupted.
    2.  Checked the MD5 hash of the file on the drobo against the file on the card.  The hashes were different.
This means that the file copy was bad.
    3. Removed the file from the LH catalog.
    4. Deleted the file from the storage device.
    5. Copied it from the card.
    6. Check the hashes to make sure the copy was good.
    7. Imported the file into LR.   The preview JPG still showed up as corrupted.
    8. I then attempted to open the file in the develop module.  It opened ok.  Made some adjustments
then when back to the library module and the preview JPG now looked fine.
I guess removing an images from the catalog does not remove the preview JPG from the catalog. Which
means that if the image is added back to the catalog the old LR generated preview may get reused.

  • Imported RAW files corrupted but JPEG ok. Will this be ok in my library?

One of three of my SD cards imported about 10% of its RAW files with great chunks missing. I actually saved the folder onto external hard drive before trying to import with LR, and I CAN see quite normal RAW file images using iPhoto, but the same images are still fragmented when I import them directly from the external hard drive.
EXcuse use my ignorance, but can I import the jpeg images using Lightroom's DNG copy option (so that they are more stable); and will I be able to use them, and work on them, just as effectively as with all the successfully downloaded RAW images?
OR do I have to go back to Iceland for these 100 photos?!
    Thanks, Sandoise

    Sandoise wrote:
looking at images on the camera screen
That does not verify raw data, only embedded jpeg preview, which you already know is OK.
    Sandoise wrote:
I can see both RAW and JPEGS in iPhotos and they look perfectly good.
Well, seeing them in iPhotos does not mean raw data is good - it may also be showing just the embedded jpeg preview, which doesn't count.
    Sandoise wrote:
Lightroom is the third way I've checked
Lightroom is for sure showing the raw (re-rendered) data, so it's the one to use to judge raw data integrity, as read by OS, from card, through your reader...
    Sandoise wrote:
How else can I check the card?
It's "impossible" to tell whether problem is card or reader, unless you try a few different readers. Try a few different ports and a couple different systems too if you can, to rule out system/port/reader possibilities. If raw data is bad no matter which system, which port, which reader you use - it's bad on the card. You still won't know for sure whether the card is bad or the camera is bad, or something else happened.., but bad card is the most likely..

  • No Song Info for mp3 files that haven't been imported by iTunes??

Since iTunes won't automatically recognize an mp3 CD, I just drag and drop into my iTunes library. However, when I try to use the get track info for the mp3s I dragged in, I get a message saying; "iTunes cannot get CD track names for songs that were not imported using iTunes. To allow iTunes to look for CD track names for this song, import the song again using iTunes." Is there any way to get iTunes to automatically import an mp3 CD as it would automatically import an audio CD? I can't think of any other way to get around this problem.

  • Backup skips files

    Hi
I have a strange error with my Time Machine backup.
The backup is skipping newly created files.
The only way I can get the backup to include the new files is to go in to the very top level "Macintosh HD" or other directory and change a file so that the #changed" date is changed at the top level.
Sometimes that does not help if files are very deep in the structure i suspect ...
I did reinstalled the system and started over the time machine backup. Things was going fine for a couple of days. But soon started to skip files again.
Sometimes a restart does help. And sometimes not.
I have also tried "safe reboot" and that helped.
But the problems always comes back after some time.
What can cause this kind of trouble?
Could it be that the user account is corrupted?
I have a test account that seems to be backed up ok. But I have not tested for very long.
Could it be the actual hard drive? I have one of the Imacs with Seagate drives that is part of exchange program.
I don't get any error messages or anything.
    Any help would be apreciated.
    Regards
    olle

If you use the third-party application "Dropbox," you may see files in the Finder that are not present locally, but are actually on a network server. Those files won't be backed up and won't appear in Time Machine, even though they show in a Finder window. If the files in question are in a Dropbox folder, disable the software or refer to its developer for support.
Continue only if you've ruled out Dropbox or any similar product as a possible cause of the issue.
Time Machine uses the modification times of folders to determine whether their contents need to be scanned for changes made since the time of the last snapshot. For some reason, that criterion occasionally fails, and TM doesn’t scan folders with contents that have changed. You may be able to get backups to resume by updating the modification times of all your folders.
Important: This procedure will change the modification times of all folders on the startup volume. It won’t affect anything that’s not a folder, and it won’t change your existing backups at all. If you have a reason to want to keep the modification times of folders as they are, STOP.
Before proceeding, you must have a current backup of all data. Since your existing Time Machine backups may not be current, you’ll have to back up in some other way; for example, by starting a new TM backup set on another external drive. It’s a good idea to do this anyway, as you always need more than one backup, even if everything is working perfectly.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
    sudo find / -xdev -type d -exec touch {} \;
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. Confirm. You don't need to post the warning. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear. You can then quit Terminal.
The next snapshot will take longer than usual, because all folders will be scanned for changes. When it’s complete, check the results to see how much data has been backed up.
This procedure will only affect the backups of your startup volume. If you back up other source volumes with Time Machine and are having the same problem with those, you’ll need to take additional steps.

  • How is a directory (folder) formatted to allow iTunes to correctly import ripped songs from my HD?

I have ripped files and have examined them with a 'kd3' program and see some of the formatting.  However when I ask iTunes to import them, I get a partial or non existent result.  Many of my file names are like " 01 - Friend of Mine.mp3".  There is no identification of the artist, although the name of the directory is the ripped CD's name.  Many I have of multiple entries, so there is like "Blondie" then in that directory is each of the owned CD's (or albums) that I have ripped.  I would hope it could figure out it was a "Blondie" and what each album was, but, alas, no such luck.  I can't seem to find anything that identifies what exactly the directory should look like, or if I need a flat file with 'kd3' type entries and separate music files (as identified in the flat file?)
Although this seems simple, I have struggled many hours, even asking and receiving information.  Somehow I'm just missing the boat...
    Thanks
    Jack

iTunes organizes its media files and folders based on the metadata ("properties" or "tags") within the music files that you add to its library.  File names are irrelevant.  You can see the metadata in Windows Explorer by right-clicking on one of your MP3 files, select Properties and then the Details tab.  You shoud see something like this:
If some or all of the properties are missing or incorrect you have two choices:
Correct the metadata in the MP3 files before you import into iTunes - you can do this (albeit inefficiently) in Windows Explorer, or using any 3rd party application that can read, modify and update this information.  I use Foobar2000 for this, but there are many other alternative solutions available.
Import the songs into iTunes and correct the metadata there (right-click > Get Info on one or more selected songs/albums).
When you have these options enabled in iTunes (Edit > Preferences > Advanced):
iTunes will automatically maintain its file and folder structures so that all songs are located in C:\Users\username\Music\iTunes Media\Music\artist_name\album_name and files are named either track_number song_title (for single disc albums) or disc_number-track number song_title (for multi-disc albums).
If you use method (1) above iTunes will not pick up any changes until you play the songs.  In general, once you've imported anything into iTunes its much better to use iTunes rather than any other method to update metadata, and you should never try to rename or move files once they've been added to your library - this will result in broken links ... next to tracks that then won't play or sync to iDevices.

  • Can't import itunes songs from imovie

When I try to play a song from my itunes list on imovie it doesn't play. Then if I drag it into the movie I get the following error message:
"The file could not be imported: The file could not be found."
If I open itunes I can drag the same song in and it will work. It's just a hassle to do so. Any help?

    Hi, Trevor,
    Sorry that didn't work.
Are the songs you cannot import purchased songs from iTunes Music Store? If so, you will need to burn them to a CD and reimport them into iTunes and then they will work.
Or, if you are having problems with only one or two songs, you can use WireTap to record these and then import the resultant AIFC file into iMovie. You can find WireTap here
If you are having problems with all songs regardless of whether they were purchased or imported from your own cds, then the problem is with your iTunes. Try deleting the iTunes plist (Same pathway, just a different com.apple.iTunesplist).
Post back if neither of these helps.
