Import - Old Powerpoint File Fomats

I have Powerpoint presentations dating back to Office 4.2 in the late 80's. Assuming that, like most software manufactureres, Microsoft would allow importing of old file formats ..thus allowing a "save as" in the current format".... I discarded Office 98 and 4.2. Does anyone know if Keynote will import these old Powerpoint formats?
As you might expect, numerous email exchanges with Microsoft Technical support have only yeiled a "you can't get there from here" response...no real help.
If I can impoprt these old presenations I will gladly convert to Keynote without ever looking back

LSDMD,
welcome to Apple Discussions.
Check if you've got a 30-days-trial version of
Keynote. If not, maybe you could download it here.
At least I was able to open an old PPT from March
1998 without problems in Keynote -- except that some
exotic fonts were missing.
If this information
is useful to you, please mark it as "helpful" or
"solved" using the little buttons in the titlebar of
this message. Thank you.
PowerBook G4 17", 1GB   Mac OS X
(10.4.7)   iMac G5 20"; iPod 3G, iPod Shuffle,
iSight
Unfortunately that link and the resulting download wasn't a free-trial ...so I coundn't test it. I would be thrilled to buy Keynote if I could simply establish for myself (by testing it with those old Powerpoints) that it would indeed open them. Do you have any other ideas where I might find a download of a trial version.
Thanks so much

Not possible with the current Logic 9 version, you would need Logic 7 or below to do so!

  • How can I Import old lbi files to DW8 - solved

A fast search here found me nothing so if someone knows of a
post feel free to point me there.
A year or so ago my DW4 started crashing to desktop everytime
I opened it, I haven't done much webwork the last few years so it
wasn't that important but now I just purchased DW8 and if I can't
get the old library files to work with the new version I am in for
a world of editing I don't want to deal with to re-create them all
and update every page that has one (groan).
I bet if DW didn't crash to desktop I could have exported the
old one and imported to DW8? But I can't so don't tell me to do
that :). I MAYYYYYY be able to do it on an old laptop that I think
it still worked on so that is a last resort, but how can there not
be some way for the modern DW to scan for old site files that
    existed? I don't get it.

DW8 and DW4 were identical in the way that they create
    Library items.

There still is. It's in the Assets tab of the Files Panel.

  • Unable to import old AB files- SL

    Hello,
Just upgraded to SL from Tiger. Did a full backup (not with Time Machine as it wasn't included with Tiger) onto an external drive. ( I used SuperDuper if that helps any)
I can see all my old AB files on the backup drive (looked in my home Library/app supp/addbk and also found the Metadata folder in /Caches)
When I tried to import my old data into SL, all my old AB files are greyed out and I can't select them or any folder associated with them in order to import them into Snow Leopard.
Things I've tried: I took the entire Address Book folder from my backup and used it to replace my Snow Leopard folder of the same name and location. No good. No errors either, just ignores the data.
    Help?

    Woot!
Seems that the drive has a quirk in that it needs to be triggered during startup to boot.
I had used the "option key" to select the drive which didn't work. When I went into "System Preferences" and "Startup Disk", selecting the backup and rebooting it worked!
Sigh. It's illogical quirks like this that drove me to Mac's in the first place -Windoze is rife with them!
Oh well, this is the first real quirk I've run into, guess I shouldn't complain.
    Thanks for all the help!

  • Won't import old image files

    Help,
I have a series of directories with 20 year old image files. Mac Info says they are tiffs. Photoshop can open them, preview can open them. Lightroom doesn't even recognize them, I don't even get typical lightroom errors. And these were copied over from CD roms where they were backed up in the era before harddrives were big. And interestingly, some files are recognized and added. Anyone sen anything like this?

    >If the files don't have a .TIF filename extension then add an extension to one of the files  and then see if it will import.
Bob is right. That is probably the issue. Lightroom doesn't recognize the old filetype/creator metadata codes that Macs used to use 20 years ago so won't recognize that they are image files if there is no extension. You might not realize there is no extension as Mac OS X stupidly hides those by default. You should always turn that option off in the Finder presences->advanced.

  • When downloading iTunes onto a new computer, is there any way to automatically import old music files? Last time I got a new computer I didn't have to use an external drive to update my music library.

When downloading iTunes onto a new computer, is there any way to automatically important songs from your previous computer? I recently cracked the screen on my computer and cannot access any files. Last time I got a new computer my iTunes media files automatically appeared in my iTunes when I downloaded it, and I did not have to use my external drive. Is this still possible?

If your backup copy of the old computer was not stolen, then use it to put everything back.

  • Need advice about importing a Powerpoint file into FCE 3.5

I am editing a live event (a 2 camera shoot). A 3 minute Powerpoint projection was shown with a music track.
Our recorded footage is useable, but I thought that I could import the original PPT file from the producers (two teenagers), for better picture quality. I managed to get Keynote to Save it as a .mov file.
However the Producers seem to have re-edited the PPT and now there is certainly no Sync with the original. The duration is much longer than the original. The image quality is however brighter and crisper than our Rushes.
Can anyone suggest any Tips on working this way with PPT. (yes, I know - no-one in their right mind would ......)
My work-around seems to be just edit as a Fit-to-Fill and hope for the best.
I am not expecting too many brilliant ideas but if there is anyone out there witha solution, I will be very grateful.
    Thanks in advance
    Freesh

    Matt,
Thanks for your lonesome Reply. Not too many people going down this route!
I have actually managed to edit it in as a Fit-to-fill and have previewed it within the sequence. However my programme is 90 minutes long and I have had to move on. I will come back to it again to see if I can improve anything probably tomorrow - Thursday.
I cant imagine I will use this avenue too often, so I dont want to seek perfection here or waste your time. There is only a tiny budget - it is a good cause really. We do these things.
But I am alaways generally interested in building my knowledge base. I didn't find any problem in converting or importing it to FCE HD 3.5. I am running 10.4.7. I saved it as a QT Pro 7.04 .mov. I dont know too much of the technical aspects, only when something goes wrong and I have to.
I did force it to Render. But I re-edited so I haven't yet bothered with it again. I am interested to see what it looks like on a TV (I dont have a dedicated monitor at present) and on the eventual DVD which is the Delivery format.
I will post back or email you with any more info when I finish the edit if you would like?
    Thanks again

  • IWeb on macbook pro with mavericks cannot import old iWeb files from time machine back up

Hi! The apple store completely wiped my macbook and installed mavericks. I made a time machine back up before bringing it in to be completely wiped. Computer had bad software so they recommended me to handpick items and bring them over to new operating system without completly putting the entire time machine back up on it.
So I did but my only concern is Iweb. Now I got Iweb back installed in mavericks I cannot seem to import any files from my back up to my application in my renewed computer with mavericks. I searched for .domains, sites and sites2 but I cannot extract anything and I still have some old websites stored with Iweb and use the application quite a bit...
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks a million....

    Not sure what you mean by extract but this might help;
If you're running Lion or later the Home/Library folder is invisible and that's where the domian files are located.  That folder will be invisible in the TM backups also.  Therefore  you can extract Domain files one at a time out of the TM backups for import into iPhoto.  You would do it as follows:
1 - download and run Find Any File to search for a file named ".site".
FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages.
2 - the search can take a while due to the structure of the TM backups.
3 - select the backup from which you want to recover the Domain file.
4 - drag the file from the search results window to the Desktop.
If you recover more than one Domain file be sure to rename them after dragging to the Desktop so that you don't overwrite one with the next.
5 - you can put the Domain file(s) in your Home/LIbrary/Application Support/iWeb folder but will have to make the library visible as follows:
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible in Lion or Mt. Lion enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
For Mavericks, 10.9,  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Optionsmenu to bring the this window:
To open your domain file in Lion or Mountain Lion or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
    tell application "iWeb" to activate
You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.
Just launch the application, find and select the domain file in your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder that you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder.  So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.

  • Can I import old MacProject files into something more modern?

I have some MacProject files which were created on an older Mac under OS7. Under older OSX I could still open those files in the Classic environment. That option has obviously now gone having upgraded Mac and OS to 10.4.8
I have copies of the older Mac's hard drives safely stored and now want to import or open the MacProject files and save them in an upto date format for my MacBook Pro.
Any suggestions how I might do this?

    ps_pause,
    Welcome to the discussions.
It will all depend on the 'save as' options available in the older software. The data will be stored similar to a relational database. Just saving a file as text will not include all the linked information. Take a look at the save and export options.

  • How can I import old email files from Simeon into Apple Mail?

I used to use Esys Simeon for PC for mail at work.  I recently found my Simeon email files, which I thought I'd lost.  If possible, I'd love to import them to Mail, to have as part of my general email archive.
The files come as a set of nested folders.  The lowest level of folders each contain a set of separate numbered files each of which contains one email in plain text (complete with all headers).  The folders also contain a number of other '.dat' files with info about the folder contents.
    I'm on Mail 4.5
    Any ideas?

    No. But…
one email in plain text (complete with all headers).
How do you know it's plain text? File name extension ".txt"?
Message Handler?) type file system to mbox
Not likely. MH would be text, .dat suggests binary. "Mh" in "mh_cache.dat" may stand for "message handler", but it's not MH.
Try Emailchemy (test it, don't buy it until you know it works). You might have to change file name extensions from .txt to .eml. Or try to find some documentation of Simeon's file formats and directory structure. I doubt it will be easy to find a converter. Given your description, I'd probably use AppleScript.

  • Importing Windows PowerPoint Presentation

I work for a company whom only supports Windows. I have a IPad that I want to use for presntations. Do I have to have a MAC with Keynotes to import PC Powerpoint files or will the IPAD applicationa allow me to do so as a stand alone?
If not does anybody have any ideas of a solution besides going out to buy a MAC?
(though it is on the wish list)

Keynote for iPad can import PowerPoint presentations directly; no need to have Keynote on a Mac to convert. See:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4066
There are other apps that can also import and display PowerPoint presentations, such as Documents To Go, but if you want to use the iPad in conjunction with a projector, you'll want to confirm that the app you select can (as Keynote can) output to the VGA adapter.
    Regards.

Please describe exactly what you did. In moving to a new machine no importing is involved. The best way is to simply connect the two computers together and drag the iPhoto library from the old one to the pictures folder go the new one and launch iPhoto
