Import OMF to FCP

Is it possible to import OMF files into FCP? The files were exported from Avid Xpress Pro I believe.

When Avid digitizes a file it becomes an omf, unless it's audio when can be an aif, depending on Avid settings. Avid take import a Quicktime, but again, it will become and omf. And Avid can import an omf... at least I'm guessing it can. If it was created in Avid then you don't even have to import but that's another topic for another message board.
Final Cut can't import an omf. You can export a clip from Avid as a quicktime that FCP can then import that.

  • Importing OMF files

Hello, I'm having trouble importing OMF files into Soundtrack Pro. Today, I exported an OMF file from FCP and want to import that file into Soundtrack Pro. But, when I launch Soundtrack Pro and go to the File (drop down) Menu, I do not get an option to import files. I only see an export option under the File Menu. Has anyone every experience this problem? Btw, I'm new to Soundtrack Pro....
    Any help would be appreciated...
    Thanks,
    Archieh

Welcome that is odd if the menu is grayed out. What version are you running? 2.0.2 is the current from the Final Cut Studio suite, or 2.0.1 from the Logic Studio suite.

  • Cannot import OMF

    Need some tips
I'm trying to import an OMF file into Soundtrack pro. The file was created in FinalCut pro (latest version etc) by my client.
I open a new project in ST and select "import OMF..."
I select the OMF file located on my HD and the process begins. I get a window with "importing OMF File..." and a progress bar but after about 1/10th of the distance it stops progressing. There is no cancel button. There is no sign of a crash - no signs of "soundtrack pro is not responding" or anything. Indeed, I can even play the empty timeline.
I've left it sitting there for an hour or so but nothing progresses. There are few audio files from the OMF in a new folder that seemed to have been written at about the the time the import was started but nothing seems to have been updated or written since then. Its like the import just stops for some reason.
I can open the OMF file up in Logic ok (though there is no automation info - though perhaps my client hasn't saved this etc)
Any ideas what is going on?

    update...
I can open this OMF from FCP in Logic. There is no level or crossfade info though.
The amount of bugs and issues I find in STP amazes me.
I'd really welcome any feedback on this OMF issue. Is anyone else successfully going FCP to STP via OMF?
I just want to sound (audio) mix a video project from FCP in Sountrack pro. The video has been edited on a completely different system and I need a neat way of getting the video edit audio to my system for mixing, without having to transfer huge amounts of unused captured footage from the video system. The video editor will be sending me the stuff on a dvd-r. Well thats the plan.
Is XML the best way? XML doesn't save any audio, correct? How do I get only the used audio + handles from the video edit for the xml interchange etc etc etc.

  • OMF from FCP - no automation

Please note I have the latest version of everything I am using.
Has anyone had any success at all with importing OMF or XML files from Finalcut pro into logic?
I get the audio but all automation data from the FCP timeline disappears. The automation from FCP does not carry over to logic.
The same omf file will open just fine in Soundtrack pro, showing automation and even crossfades.
My current solution is to export an AAF from Soundtrack pro and bring that into Logic. One main problem with this is that any crossfades appear as separate audio files.
I have also tried XML files but there are issues here too.
Is anyone managing to go FCP to logic whilst preserving automation and crossfades?
    Any tips most welcome.

What you're seeing (no automation data) is the norm for when you import an OMF from FCP into Logic.

  • Workaround to import video in FCP 6.0.5 under Leopard

On behalf of a FCP user under Leopard with FCP 6.0.5 I would like to ask you how to import video from a Panasonic camcorder using some strange format. The workaround now is to import it on another machine under Snow Leopard with iMovie, export it as one .mov 'for computer use' and import it in FCP 6.0.5 on the Leopard machine. The video from the camcorder does not play under Leopard, probably because of the QT version 7.6.6.
The Panasonic camcorder has an SD card with video which is recognised as a Camera Archive. It has folders with a name like PRG001 containing files like MOV001.MOD and MOV001.MOI and PRG001.PGI.
Possibly there is some plugin, extention or other workaround?
It is currently too expensive to upgrade FCP 6.0.5 to the latest version, although the 2006 MacBook Pro with Intel might be able to run it. I was advised not to upgrade to Snow Leopard without upgrading FCP, because it will cause all kinds of trouble.

Although I would still need to buy the "QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component for Mac OS X" to work with it, right? At least that is what MPEG Streamclip suggests when I try to open the MOVxxx.MOD files with it.

  • I can't upload or import videos from my iphoto library, into final cut pro x.  When i click, IMPORT MEDIA in FCP, It lists iPhoto Library as GRAY, and will not let me access it.  I need the videos out of there.  I have tried every way I can think of.

    Like the title says...
I can't upload or import videos from my iphoto library, into final cut pro x.  When i click, IMPORT MEDIA in FCP, It lists 'iPhoto Library' as GRAY, and will not let me select it.  I need the videos out of there.  I have tried every way I can think of.
I have also tried from the iphoto side, to export the videos or share them to final cut.  I have had no luck.
I have tried to drag and drop indidual video clips from iphoto to fcp, and the programs simply do not respond to each other
I can see in the OLDER version of final cut pro x, where it has IMPORT FILES as an option, it was possible.  I see this on forums and youtube videos of the older versions.
However, the newer version that i have, does not have IMPORT 'FILES' as an option, it is simply all lumped together as IMPORT 'MEDIA'
    Thank You for the Help

at the end, you say "import preferences", which program are you describing?
So im safer using footage that is remotely being pulled from iphoto...
    vs
using footage that is imported into FCP from imovie?
Is there anything i can do in fcp to make this footage more reliable or safer or more stable as i pull remotely from iphoto?
All the footage, and all the libraries to all programs, or on a new pegasus 12tb raid 5 setup fyi.

  • Can't import Media into FCP X

In the last week or two when I try to import media into FCP X I end up with a very dark and locked import screen.  The only way I can recover is to force quit FCP X.  It doesn't always happen but it is getting more and more frequent.
I have not updated to Marverik and I'm running the latest version of FCP X on the same iMac I have used since installation.
Any suggestions beacuse it really is starting to beome very, very frustrating.
    Thanks

They system is hanging up, waiting on some command to finish, which is not able to.  So let's look at ways to fix this.  Becasue you never want to do an upgrade to fix problems.  Only upgrade a proerly working system.  Otherwise, you may just be hauling old problems into a new envoronment, and making things worse.  I've seen it a lot over the years.
First, verify that all of your drives have at least 15% of their total capacity as free space.  Not enough free space on any dirve can cause similar odd behaviors.
Second, you need to do some housee cleaning.  Start by downloading and running the free application "Preference Manager" from Digital Rebellion (dot com).  Use it to trash the FCPX preference files.  It is easy and safe to you.  None of your media or projects will be touched.  After that, run Disk Utility to "Repair" all of your drives (ignore "Verify", total waste of time).
If none of that helps, I'd recommand you download the free application "FCS Remover" from Digital Rebellion.  Use it to uninstall FCPX.  Some folks say to just move the app from the Applications folder to the Trash.  That leaves a bunch of other files hanging around that could be bad.  Use this app.  Once you've uninstalled FCPX, launch the App Store, go to the Purchases section, and FCPX will have an "Install" button.  Reinstall a fresh copy, see if that helps.

  • Import photos to FCP Images stretch out

While I import photos to FCP, it stretch the images, I have been change the images size to 720x480, and adjust setting to 16:9 or 4:3, the problem still there, look like wide screen images fitting into the full screen.
    any help will be appreciate.
    Tks
    Pai

Don't make your photos 720x480, because FCP will stretch them.
Make your photos another size, hopefully a larger size, and then FCP will see them as square pixels and so will then not make them fill the screen.

  • Premiere Markers export and import: Roundtrip via FCP XML not working

The objective of my project is to create a sports app that records markers and saves it in different formats of XML / CSV that I can then import in different NLE packages.
I have already succeeded with Vegas Pro but also want to support NLEs for MAC-OS.
In order to approach this analytically I have exported a very simple project with 1 sequence including 1 clip and 3 markers (with length zero and length > 0) and exported it
in FCP XML from Adobe Premiere CC and do a round-trip import it via FCP import into Adobe Premiere CC.
This round-trip does not work. Any insight why or any support what other mechanism will work?
    Thanks
    Thomas

let's go back to the purpose:
I have written a mobile app on which people can during a sports match capture the time of the important moments by pressing buttons.
I then convert the time information into an XML or CSV file that can be read by the different NLE. Given that Sony Vegas allows to import
markers independently from a sequence. Now I look at the same things for Premiere. This allows to edit the highlights very quickly vs watching
    the entire match coverage again.
I try to replicate that on Premiere through the FCP XML, but now that the roundtrip works, the issue is that FCP XML in its structure wants a sequence.
I could imagine to provide a dummy sequence that can be overlayed by the real content just to preserve the markers. Any ideas?

    TK

  • Best Method For Importing Clips Between FCP Projects

What is the best method for importing clips between FCP 7.0.3 projects?  I am wondering whether or not pulling the clips from the Capture Scratch folder is the way to go or will using Import from the new FCP project create a new folder in Capture Scratch with the imported clips?  I have a new HD camcorder with different clips for different projects and Log and Transfer makes it so easy to bring them all in at once but now wondering how best to separate them into separate Capture Scratch folders for each project.

well, I simply either drag them in to the new/different project from the finder, or drag or copy and paste between open fcp projects.  Never had any problems working this way.  Just remember that if you delete a specific project scratch disk folder, you may be deleting media used in another project.

  • Importing Flash into FCP

I have Flash Pro 8 and FCP Pro HD and am still trying to learn both.
Can I create a piece in Flash and import it into FCP? If I need to upgrade FCP, I will - I just need to know if it's possible, and how to do it.
    thanks a lot.
    j.

On a related question, I have a number of flash animations for a client, a comic, and the movie is in 5 parts...I have the latest version of FCP and of Flash, and I am having a lot of problems exporting to quicktime and importing to FCP. I have tried export movie>quicktime and quicktime movie, with a variety of codecs (animation, motion graphics, DV), and every time some tweens(individual) are dropped, and some sounds from the flash movie. There must be a way to just clone what I can see in my swf into FCP? If anyone knows how, please help.
(and please, dont tell me to learn the apps as I have a professional level knowledge of both.)

  • Import OMF into Premiere

    Hello,
How do I import OMF file into Premiere? Has Exported out OMF file from Premiere earlier and made finishing in ProTools, and will now import the OMF file back into Premiere. Is this possible? If not what is the easiest solution? We will do some cutting changes, it would have been fine with sound in sync.

    Hi,
Thanks for your post. As per the workflow Premiere pro can export the OMF files but It is unable to import the OMF files. The OMF's are not in the supported list of audio formats that Premiere Pro imports. The format supported for importing in Premiere pro are listed below. You can import the file if you change the format of the audio using any third party converter and then export it again in OMF.

  • Logic Pro Crashing when importing OMF

When I go to "import OMF" from within Logic Pro 8, a moment after the import starts, Logic quits unexpectedly.
    Anyone?
    Thanks,
    Jon

Logic has always had an incomplete OMF import, it's very particular as to what it will accept. It chokes if there's too many regions and it used to choke if it was an OMF referencing 24-bit bit files. I think the 24-bit error was fixed but I don't think there has been any further develpopment.

  • Importing DVD to FCP questions

I did a search on importing DVD content into FCP. I have read a lot of the articles but I still have questions.
I have about 8 DVD's that I have to pull clips from. There are about 18 clips. I know it is possible to just decode those clips. I am going to be editing this in FCP so here are my questions.
Which software is easier as far as setting in and out marks for the decoding of the DVD (mpegstreamclip or Handbrake)? I know I have to Encode the DVD to MPEG-4. Is this the default in mpegstreamclip or Handbreak? I also read that you have to demux the file before you import it into FCP. Is this an option in mpegstreamclip or handbreak?
One last thing, I know that a DVD is MPEG2 and I have to convert it to MPEG 4 but is it better to transfer the DVD to DVCAM and then capture the tape or use the software to rip the files. As far as quality, I would assume it is the same thing but I would like to hear it from the Gurus.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
    thanks
    Dual G5 2.0   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Given the fact that both are free or very inexpensive downloads, give them both a try.
MPEG Streamclip extracts are variety of QT formats. And you do not have to encode the DVD to Mpeg4, instead mpeg2.
Not certain why you are calling something a fault of the program.
You might want to explain, and remember these programs do not work with encrypted DVDs.
    best wishes

  • Aspect ratio importing DV into FCP X

Can someone explain how DV format works (I think I understand this) and how importing DV into FCP X works (I definitely don't understand).
I have some old PAL DV files which I want to compress using Compressor, with the aim of later importing them into FCP X. I can compress them in one of two ways: compressing to 720x576 with the standard PAL aspect ratio, so they appear (eg. in QuickTime Player) as 768x576. Let's call this 'Old Style'. Or, I can compress them so they have square pixels, and genuinely are at 768x576. ('Square pixels').
Both display using QTP7 as 768x576, but Square Pixels is compressed slightly so there is more of the picture visible at left and right of the screen. Objects in the image are therefore thinner left-to-right than in Old Style.
Now, if I import them into FCP X, in the event browser Square Pixels still displays as 768x576 and looks just as it does in QTP. But Old Style is now wider than 768x576 and has the extra bit of picture that Square Pixels displays. So they're both displaying the same image, but Square Pixels has it compressed to fit into 768x576, whereas Old Style has it wider, and consequently people are fatter left-to-right.
When I import these events into a project, things change again. Old Style appears exactly as it does in the event browser (ie. about 786x576, with the whole image displayed). Square Pixels stretches the image north-south, and this means that part of the top and bottom of the image are chopped off.
What is going on? Is there a website which can explain this clearly? Which is the better format for me to compress my video into?
    Cheers,
    Martin S Taylor

    I don't understand your question?
DV footage on DV or mini-DV tapes is  already digitised  .  .  .  .  hence the name DV or Digital Video.
If you have a DV camera or deck you can plug it into your Mac via FireWire and import the footage straight into FCP X.
