Import or Convert Visio database diagram for SQL Developer Data Modeling

Hi,
Would you please advise on how it would be possible to convert an existing Visio 2007 ERD diagram for import into SQL Developer Data Modeling?
I have tried to save the model as XML Stencil, Template and Drawing, but could not successfully import it into SQL Developer Data Modeling.
Appreciate your input on this!
Cheers!

Those are just drawing formats and don't contain any useful information about the datamodel. If you can generate ddl from the diagram you can import that, but visio is really just a drawing tool with partial data modeling addins.

  • SQL Developer Data Modeler - Limits

    Hi Everybody,
I am looking for SQL Developer Data Modeler limitations such as on entities, relationships, sub-types etc.
    Is it documented anywhere?
Are we able to build data models with 150+ entities and associated relationships with SQL Developer Data Modeler?
    Thanks in sharing your experience.

We have teams in Oracle and customers who are build models with well over 1000 entities and all the relationships involved with that scale. The tool is designed and positioned as an enterprise tool and as such handles large scale models.

  • SQL Developer Data Modeling pricing

I just downloaded the EA version of SQL Developer Data Modeling. I read in the release notes that the production release won't be free - any idea about the pricing ?
    Matthias

Once the pricing for SQL Developer Data Modeling has been confirmed, we will release the full licensing detail. This will not affect the SQL Developer licensing that exists today. We plan to release SQL Developer Data Modeling as a stand alone product and then as an extension to SQL Developer, for those who want to work in an integrated environment. You can download the second early adopter release of SQL Developer Data Modeling and test and use the product. Once we have a production release, we will not answer queries on the early adopter releases and the feedback application we are currently offering for this will be shut down. As such you can continue to work with the early adopter release, but it is incomplete and would be unsupported.

  • Import / Export MySQL database in SQL Developer Data Modeler

    Hello,
I have version 3.1.2.704 of SQL Developer Data Modeler and version 3.2.09 of SQL Developer installed.
When I´m adding a new connection in SQL Developer, I can choose the MySQL tab an create a connection to a MySQL database.
The connection test was successful and I can see all tables.
I use the same JDBC driver for SQL Developer and SQL Developer Data Modeler (mysql-connector-java-5.0.4-bin.jar).
    But there are two problems.
    1. First there is an problem when I want to import from a MySQL database (SQL Developer -> File -> DataModeler -> Import -> DataDictionary).
After choosing the MySQL connection and pressing the next button an error occurs: CONNECTION_TYPE
    What is the reason?
    2. In SQL Developer Data Modeler I have not the CONNECTION_TYPE problem. But when I want to export DDL, there is no MySQL type selectable, although there is working connection to the MySQL Database. It´s the same in SQL Developer.
    What is the reason?

    Hi,
Data Modeler does not explicitly support import from MySQL databases, although you can use a JDBC connection to do this.
Philip described how to set this up in forum message How to connect mySQL for reverve engineering
There is no MySQL tab in Data Modeler - you should use "JDBC-ODBC Bridge" - "other third party Driver".
    Set URL like : jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/database_name
driver Class: com.mysql.jdbc.DriverAlso Data Modeler does not support generation of DDL for MySQL.

  • Oracle sql developer Data Modeler -er diagram

    Hi
I tried to Oracle sql developer data modeler for show relational ER diagrams.
Tables are came on data modeler but not shown relations between tables.
    like this
How can show relations between tables?
    http://i54.tinypic.com/30wxq1e.jpg

SDDM cannot create an ER diagram with only simple table definitions. It requires that primary keys (PKs) and foreign keys (FKs) be defined first. My guess is you imported these table designs from an existing database. If so, that database does not contain those constraints. (I have found this to be an issue in many organizations over the last 20 years - including my current job). You will have to determine:
    1. The PKs for each table (either via data profiling or talk to someone who "knows" what they are supposed to be, or by reading application logic/code used to manage the tables).
    2. The FKs between the tables. You may be able to guess some of that based on column names, otherwise you will have to figure them out (same as above)
Then you can update the model in SDDM with the PK definiions (manually). You must do that first before you draw in the FKs between the tables. Now if you want a true Entity Relationship model you need create a logical model from this relational model. The SDDM utility for that will convert the tables to entities and the FKs to relationships.
I have the basic steps with screen shots outlined in a presentation I gave in Denver in late 2009. It was an earlier version of SDDM but the basics are the same. You can find the presentation is here: http://www.rmoug.org/QEW2009/SQL%20Developer%20Data%20Modeler%20(2).pdf. Start at about slide 12.

  • Import of ERwinR8 data models into Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler

Hi!  My site want to move off ERwin R8 and use Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler.  When will Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler support the import of ERwin R8data model xml?
    Thanks very much,  Patty

    Hi,
You can add the classic SCOTT schema with EMP/DEPT tables to a 10g Express Edition DB by running this script as SYSTEM:
    C:\oraclexe\app\oracle\product\10.2.0\server\RDBMS\ADMIN\scott.sql
Also, you may wish to upgrade to the current version of SQL Developer:
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/sql-developer/downloads/index.html
As for importing a .dmp file, you import it to the database, not SQL Developer. Please post that question to the appropriate forum.

  • SQL Developer Data Modeler for SQL Server 2008

I am not able to connect to my SQL Server 2008 from the SQL Developer Data Modeler. Although I do have jtds-1.2.jar on my machine and I can connect the SQL server through the SQL Developer, but still i'm not able to connect through the data modeler. I need to re-engineer and generate data model for some existing schemas.
    Here is what I'm following:-
File->Data Modeler -> import -> Data Dictionary -> Add new connection -> JDBC ODBC Bridge -> Other Third Party Driver
now when I'm giving the JDBC URL and the Driver, It throws an error message stating that the driver could not be found.
Please let me know what I can do to solve this, any help would be appreciated.
    Regards,
    AVA

I'd try 1st to connect to the db from sqldeveloper (through jtds - no ODBC involved) and see if you can browse your db and issue sql statements in a worksheet. Then export that connection in xml format and import that from the modeler.

  • SQL Developer Data Modeling - import from Oracle Designer Model

    Hi,
I do want to try to import model from a Designer repository.
The first step is to create connection to the repository (9i version).
I have created the one, however any attempt to test the connection or to go to the next step simply finishes with error "4", without any valueable message.
    Any idea or suggestion ?
    Thanx.

A clarification of the Data Modeling feedback application and this forum. The developers are part of the SQL Developer development team, but as for all our features, each developer has a focus area, so the Data Modeling developers will tend to answer those questions. There will not be a separate Data Modeling forum, so once we're production all SQL Developer Data Modeling questions will be on this forum. We want to encourage all users to get into the habit of tagging posts. Having the posts tagged means that users can skip them if they're not their focus area and users can search using the tags. The more tags are used in all the forums the better. You may well find find the answers to your questions are outside this forum!
As SQL Developer Data Modeling in in its first early adopter phase, we have provide a feedback application, where users can provide feedback, log bugs and ask questions. We did the same for SQL Developer before it's initial production release and found this to be very useful for the product.
I'm happy for "How To" questions to be on this forum, as the answers benefit the broader community.

  • How to install SQL Developer Data Modeler 3.1.1 for Mac OS X?

How do I install SQL Developer Data Modeler 3.1.1 for Mac OS X? I downloaded the file "datamodeler-3.1.1-703-macosx.gz" from OTN, but there is only a single file inside this archive - "datamodeler-3.1.1-703-macosx". What am I missing here?
    Thanks in advance...

Extract that file and then run it.
Once you installed the tool to your Applications folder (if you choose to move it to Applications), you'll need to install Java (maybe).
What version of OS X are you on?
In a command window/terminal, type 'java -version'
If you get something back like 'java version "1.6..." then you're all good.
If you're on Mountain Lion, then type 'java' instead. That should download java for you.
Once you've got java available, then launch SQL Developer Data Modeler.
The installation notes are here if you want the official list of instructions

  • Connection to SQL Developer Data Modeler Fails

    All,
I am using Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler version 3.0.0.665 in an Oracle 10g database environment. When I try to import DDLs, I get the following error message:
    NoSuchMethodError:
oracle.i18.ntext.converter.CharacterConverterOGS.getInstance(I)Loracle/i18n/text/converter/CharacterConverter;I use the same connection profile in Oracle SQL Developer version 1.5.0.53, and my connection works fine there, but the same credentials in SQL Developer Data Modeler fails with the above error message. Any thoughts what causes this connection problem?
    Thank you,
    Seyed

    Hi Philip,
Thank you so much for the information. Your suggested solution resolved my problem. For some reason when I first installed the Data Modeler, it worked fine and I was able to save the result into PDF files. Then my connection went bad and I posted this question on this forum.
    Again thank you very much,

  • How can I find out what is causing this error in SQL Developer Data Modeler

    Friends,

In case of need I perform these steps to perform the import:
File --> Import --> Oracle Designer Model --> Select database connection --> Select work area --> select application system --> select one entity --> Click finish --> Import starts
During the import process I see an alert dialog box with the message:
There are errors in import - check Log file Clicking Ok dismisses the alert box and I see the following summary screen:

Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to provide.

No this helps a lot. It's not strange. Firstly, in a versioned repository you should see Private Workareas and Shared workareas, so your workarea may be in either of these. It won't be in the Global Shared Workarea, as this only for non-versioned repositories. (I like to open the RON by selecting the full Repository, that way I can see the private and shared worlareas and the configuration and containers all in the same tree.
Now your workarea is defined by a set of rules, so when you expand the workarea in the RON, and select the object, then that's the workarea and object you'll see in the import dialog in the Data Modeler. So if you check it out and check it back in, and can't see it in the RON, then the rule is not seeing this object. (Did you refresh the workarea in the RON?) If you can't see it in the RON, you can't see it in the Data Modeler. If you're working in a versioned repository, you need to work in the specific work area, i.e V27 and this is what you need to select in the Data Modeler.
It looks like you are selecting the wrong workarea in the Data Modeler.

  • Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler Versus SQL Developer

    Friends,
I'm trying to understand the differences between Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler and the ability to use the Data Modeler in SQL Developer.
I've looked at both products home pages on OTN, http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/datamodeler/index.html & http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/sql_developer/index.html and would appreciate your comments on my findings so far
    1) The Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler is a stand-a-lone chargeable product whereas the use of the Data Modeler functionality of SQL Developer is free
    2) The Data Modeler functionality within SQL Developer is basically a "viewer" I can create ERD's of my existing tables by dragging them into the modeler from the object navigator but that's about it. I can't save the diagram for later use or use it to change the structure of the table(s)
    3) If I need to have "Oracle Designer" like ERD capabilities then I need to use Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler (after purchase!)
    4) Are there any other differences I have missed?
    Thanks in advance

You can open any diagram created in the stand-alone product in the SQL Developer Data Modeler Viewer and navigate through all property dialogs and the full navigator, just like you can in the stand-alone product, but with no update capabilities. This allows developers to fully review the model and all properties, without making changes.

  • Bug report SQL DEVELOPER DATA MODELER

    Hello,
I think i found a bug using Sql developer data modeler 2.0.0 build 584.
When importing a DDL file to create a relational model, foreign key constraints might not be created if foreign key uses multiple-field and the fields are not referenced in the same order as the primary key was.
    ex:
    Table FOO ..... PRIMARY KEY (id_1, id_2)
    FOREIGN KEY (id_2, id_1) REFERENCES FOO (id_2, id_1)
    Benjamin
P.S: Bellow is a portion of SQL code demonstrating the problem:
    -- "_decompte"
    CREATE TABLE "_decompte"(
    numero_rang VARCHAR2(2),
    numero_contrat VARCHAR2(13),
    id_decompte VARCHAR2(19)
    ALTER TABLE "_decompte"
    add CONSTRAINT pk_decompte PRIMARY KEY (numero_rang, numero_contrat, id_decompte);
    -- "_decompte_detail"
    CREATE TABLE "_decompte_detail"(
    numero_rang VARCHAR2(2),
    id_ligne NUMBER(4),
    numero_contrat VARCHAR2(13),
    id_decompte VARCHAR2(19)
    -- "_decompte_detail"
-- NOT Recognized by SQL DEVELOPER DATA MODELER (fields are not in the same order as primary key definition)
    ALTER TABLE "_decompte_detail"
    add CONSTRAINT fk_decompte_detail_1 FOREIGN KEY (numero_contrat, numero_rang , id_decompte) REFERENCES "_decompte"(numero_contrat, numero_rang , id_decompte);
-- Recognized by SQL DEVELOPER DATA MODELER
    ALTER TABLE "_decompte_detail"
    add CONSTRAINT fk_decompte_detail_2 FOREIGN KEY (numero_rang, numero_contrat, id_decompte) REFERENCES "_decompte"(numero_rang, numero_contrat, id_decompte);

    Hi,
Well, I was recently given some database scripts and asked to correct and improve them. These scripts were not generated but rather hand made. Having no access to a DBMS I was just curious about the result of this option in Data modeler and tried it for a better DB overview. I don't need it at all, but I was surprised to discover that the result was a failure. So I tried various scripts until I found the mistake.
    regards.
