Import or log and transfer?  does it matter?

I am a handful of .mov's I'm using for a project and usually I just left click and import the folder full of .mov's. Does that have drawbacks? Or should I log and transfer?
or does it matter?

Without knowing more about your setup it's hard to say. It might matter. But maybe not. But we can't tell you more - until you tell us more.
See, when you refer to files simply as ".mov's" that doesn't tell us much. That just means that QT is going to want to play them back. But it says nothing of the real codec behind the movies. Meaning, the movies could be DVCPro, DVPro HD, DV, AVCHD, ProRes, AVI's, H.264, mp4...the list goes on and on.
So FCP is tuned to work with some of these codecs better than others. Telling us more about what going on "under the hood" with those .mov's will help us to guide you better.

  • Cant import using Log and Transfer to FCE 4.0.1 from Panasonic DMC-TZ10

Does anyone know if/how I can import into FCE 4.0.1 using Log and Transfer? I use Log and Transfer with my Sony HDR XR200VE Video Camera but when I try this with the Panasonic DMC-TZ10 I can play the clips in the Log and Transfer Clip viewer however they don't import after I add them to the queue. It just gives me an ! icon and gives up.
I guess I need to know if there is a combination of camera settings and Codecs I can choose that will allow me to successfully import into FCE 4.0.1 using Log and Transfer.
The settings I can choose on the DMC-TZ10 camera are the Rec Mode (Either AVCHD Lite (GPS Rec), AVCHD Lite, or Motion JPEG) and the Rec Quality SH, H or L).
iPhoto 09 and iMovie 09 will automatically import video from this camera if I choose Motion JPEG and H on the DMC-TZ10

Log and transfer only supports AVCHD. It does not support AVCHD Lite, nor will it work with Motion JPEG media. You could use third party software to convert it, or iMovie and then export a QuickTime movie from there in the correct codec and format.

I am using a CANON VIXAIA HF10.and the clips are importing very very slow. The max time on each clip is only 5 min or so. Is there a way to speed this up? Thanks.

  • Log and transfer does not recognize footage. Please Help

When i open the log and transfer window in FCP on my macbook it no longer recognizes the files from the Contents folder of a P2 card or the RED ONE files from the folder on my hard drive. last week however, everything was working fine.
does this have something to do with the project settings or the RED plugins? any help is greatly appreciated. thanks.

Have you changed your set up or software, or computer in any manner since last week?
And did you trash your preferences and try that?

  • Why is there an 'Error: No Data' sign when importing in Log and Transfer?

    Hello,
I am trying to import clips from my Panasonic HDC-SD100 camcorder into Final Cut Express 4. I am using the Log and Transfer window and am able to import most of my clips. However, every time I import there are a handful of clips that are left idle and an 'Error: No Data' sign appears next to them. They have not been imported to the Scratch Disk, and yet there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with them because they playback on the viewing screen in the Log and Transfer window. Can anyone help me to determine what is wrong?
    Many thanks.

Some of the descriptions you are using are kind of confusing.
"first 2 controls of each DO line(s)"
"button 1 of DO lines 1 and DO lines 2"
"control 2 of DO lines 1 and DO lines 2"
What is the difference between "button 1" and "control 2".  I am going to assume you mean the same thing when you say "button" vs. "control" but just decided to change terminology in mid-sentence
You need to write out a Truth table to describe what you need done.  The way you have the description written, you are already using the word "OR" to describe the different situations.  That is going to be a key part of your program.
    This shows:
    (DOlines button1 AND button2)  OR
    (DOlines2 button1  AND button2) OR
    (DOlines button1 AND DO lines2 button1)  OR
    (DOlines button2 AND DO lines2 button2)

  • Problems importing through log and transfer

anybody know why i cant import canon elph 100HS video files through log and transfer in final cut pro 7?
    thanks

Does Canon have a plugin for working with that camera and FCP like they do for their larger DSLRs?  If so, download and install it and then try Log & Transfer again.  If not, you'll need to convet the files from the camera using other apps like MPEG Streamclip or possibly ClipWrap.

  • After Log and transfer, does FCE creat a copy of the clips on my camcorder?

Where does it save them to if yes?
    Thanks for any input

Welcome to the world of digital video. Yes, it does consume large amounts of disk space, and you should expect to purchase one or more external FireWire hard drives if you get into this in a meaningful way..
When you log & transfer your video with FCE, the video is transcoded to Apple Intermediate Codec for editing. Depending on how you shoot (720 vs 1080) your video will take 25GB-50GB per hour of video. Here's more info about AIC -> About HDV and the Apple Intermediate Codec.

  • A conclusion to ALL the AVCHD/.mts Log and Transfer Final Cut Pro 7 issues

    Hey all! Happy 2011!
So this is my first post here and hopefully when this thread concludes with all your help we should be able to help a lot of people and save them the heartache that I have recently had to endure by stating these things in plain English. I have some questions at the end which I think could be answered very easily! Please, no gobbledygook!
It would be great if people in the know can confirm/deny or comment on my points so those that are in a similar position to me can save their time and just get on with it.
    1) I have a Panasonic HDC-TM300 and it records in AVCHD/.mts files
    2) FCP 7 can deal with AVCHD files via the Log and Transfer feature if you do it straight from the camera or memory card and can convert to ProRes 422 (LT)?
    3) Log and Transfer _*DOES NOT WORK*_ if you move the AVCHD/.mts to an external drive without maintaining the folder structure?
    4) What is required from the folder structure that makes FCP act this way?
    5) Basically I have f*ed it by doing the part 3 above which I think is the most natural thing in the world to do! Im sure that many people have done the same thing as me please correct me if i’m wrong
After a lot of research on the internet I have come up with the following solutions and in brackets my thoughts on them. If anyone has any experience with them please please let me and other people know so I can get on with my life and editing these files.
    a) Harass the people that make FCP 7.0 and make sure that the next update solves this stupid/idiotic/ridiculous oversight. (This could take a while but i think we should do it for the sake of future generations)
    b) Someone could let us know about a workaround to this that may be the folder structure that FCP needs to be able to do L&T (needs to be simple so that everyone can do it. This would be the best short term solution until part a is completed)
    c) Buy one of the converter programs such as ClipWrap, Toast Titanium or Aunsoft mts converter. If so which is the most/ least recommended and why? (Least desirable option due to requirement for extra program so extra faffing and extra cost).
Thanks y’all and keep up the awesome work!!

    2) FCP 7 can deal with AVCHD files via the Log and Transfer feature if you do it straight from the camera or memory card and can convert to ProRes 422 (LT)?
    Yes.
    3) Log and Transfer DOES NOT WORK if you move the AVCHD/.mts to an external drive without maintaining the folder structure?
This is true of ANY tapeless format.
    4) What is required from the folder structure that makes FCP act this way?
This is due to the fact that most of them have files in those other folders in that structure that FCP needs to access in order to get all the proper components assembled properly. Sure, there are formats that have folders with nothing in them. Doesn't matter, FCP is designed to look at the full structure and work from that.
    5) Basically I have f*ed it by doing the part 3 above which I think is the most natural thing in the world to do!
The most natural thing in the world is to NOT backup everything? Well, that might be the case, since this comes up so darn often. But, it is wrong. The full structure must be maintained. This is true of many tapeless formats and more than just FCP. Avid and Premiere need this for certain tapeless formats too.
    a) Harass the people that make FCP 7.0 and make sure that the next update solves this stupid/idiotic/ridiculous oversight.
It isn't an oversight. It is designed like this on purpose. You need to learn how to do things right. You obviously know what that is now...keep the full card structure. So now it is up to you to continue to do things properly. Instead of insisting that an NLE conform the way it works to suit your needs.
    b) Someone could let us know about a workaround to this that may be the folder structure that FCP needs to be able to do L&T (needs to be simple so that everyone can do it. This would be the best short term solution until part a is completed)
Easy. Shoot a small bit on another card. Look at the folder structure. Recreate that structure in your backed up footage. Often this will mean making folders with exact names, even if they are empty. But if they have files in them, even small ones, then the first backup you did might not work....because those might be some of the small files FCP needs in order to do the L&T process properly. Always worth trying though.
    c) Buy one of the converter programs such as ClipWrap, Toast Titanium or Aunsoft mts converter. If so which is the most/ least recommended and why?
I highly recommend Clipwrap. Mainly because I haven't tried the others. But also because the author is always following the latest formats, and works hard to make sure his software works with them. It solved an importing issue I had with the Sony NXCam camera...within a week of me moaning about the issue.
Want a tutorial to walk you through the tapeless workflow in FCP? I have one. Tapeless Workflow for FCP 7 Tutorial You might know most of this, but watch it for other tips.

  • Log and Transfer in Background causing big problems

I don't know if you are supposed to be able to have Log and Transfer importing in the background while you edit, but it seems to allow me to do this, but I have found a VERY BAD side effect.
Log and Transfer goes about it's business importing, but if I click around in the the bin, playback other files that are already imported, etc.  Log and Transfer will not fully import the clips it is working on.  BUT, instead of giving me ANY error, it simply thinks it did it's job.  The end results is a clip in my bin that is maybe 10 seconds long and the matching clip on the SD card is 5 minutes!  No error messages anywhere.
At first I thought I had accidently stopped recording on a good number of my clips.  I was freaking out.  Thankfully I found that the clip on the SD card was the full 5 minutes long.  When I reimported it (without doing anything in FCP at the same time) the full clip came in.  (THANKFULLY I had a disk image of the SD card and wasn't just relying on my backup for the FCP files post import).
Now I just make sure not to do anything in FCP while it's importing from Log and Transfer, but it seem like quite a dicey situation that could get people in a log of trouble.

Me too.  I've learned the lesson.  But I thought FCP used to NOT allow this.  It would beep and not let me do anything else.
I'm sad they let you do it, because someone can do it without realizing importing is still going on and mess things up and not realize it until down the road in the edit and be screwed.

  • Log and Transfer: FCE4 won't recognize files from my camera

    Hi ...
I have a Sony XHR-NX5U and am capturing video on an optional Sony 128GB hard drive built for this camera. I've shot AVCHD video in both 1080/60i HQ and 1080/60i FX formats, and the camera produces video files in an MTS format (nestled in a series of folders), along with accompanying CPI files (I don't know what these are for).
My FCE4 program doesn't allow me to either import these files or use log/transfer. I've been forced to buy an external program to convert the MTS files into MOV files and then import these (Log and Transfer still won't recognize these MOV files).
What can I do to get FCE4 to recognize and allow the files directly from my camera?
Thanks in advance for any insight you can provide.
    - matt

I see your camera can be switched to record a bunch of ways.
    Try this one:
    AVCHD FH (17Mbps) 1920x-1080/60i
It should work with Log and Transfer over USB.
Also make sure you start a New Project in FCE with the Easy Setup AVCHD-Apple Intermendaite Codec1920 x 1080i60 selected and active.
Some cameras do not seem to transfer if mixed media is on the card. Try a test with the above media ONLY on the card.

  • Log and transfer inevitably crashing FCP

We're editing a couple of music video in FCP 6.0.1.
we shot with an HMC150 so the clips are being uploaded from an SDHC in an AVCHD folder via log and transfer. the first video went relatively fine barring several problems with log and transfer (files not matching thumbnails, files corrupting, FCP crashing) the problems seem to be random and inconsistent, as issues like a misplaced thumbnail or corrupted import could be reopened and fixed so there was no way to tell exactly why each thing was happening. eventually it all subsided and work went smoothly.
went on to finish video number two and after several imports the log and transfer feature has decided to be the death of the project. Choosing log and transfer inevitably leads to an almost instant crash of FCP unless all drives it's reading from are disconnected. reinserting any drive means an instant crash. the drives are not corrupt and function just fine with any and all other programs, even imovie.
why in the world can't i get FCP to stay alive when i open the log and transfer? please help.

Right - I've solved this one. It turned out that I'd recorded some 1080p50 footage. The mere presence of this on the card freaked Log & Transfer. The camera doesn't make it easy by hiding that footage when you're looking at 1080i25 (or whatever "normal" mode is).

  • Log and Transfer w/ Canon HF20  FCE

I have the canon hf20 It worked perfect with imovie 09,
I just bought Final Cut Express, I can't get it to log and transfer for the life of me. Is final Cut Express 4 and Canon HF20 compatible?
How do you import video / log and transfer?
I can't find the answer anywhere!

I have a Canon HF S100 and am also running into the problem. It will bring my clips up but when I drag them over after setting up an in and out it says there is no data.

  • Log and Transfer File Naming

When AVCHD files are imported with log and transfer, it designates a file name number sequence that includes the "#" sign both in the browser and on the external hard drive that it copies to. How can I eliminate this "#" sign and have it still assign a different number for each file?
Thanks in advance to any and all help

The clip number us assigned in the camera. You would have to manually remove the # mark in the log and transfer window before the shot was transcoded.

  • Log and Transfer not working after reformatting computers

I have taught with FCP for years.  This year, tech services reformatted my computers.  Since they were formatted, Log and Transfer does not work with my Sony Handycam.  A couple computers that have not been reformatted still Log and Transfer with no problems.  The only difference I can find is that the newly formatted computers are running OSX 10.6.8.  The computers that still Log and Transfer with no problems are running OSX 10.5.8.
I don't know if that is the problem, but would appreciate some direction here.

To cut unwanted parts off MTS files losslessly, try final mate for mac. That is the tool to help cut or trim MTS and still export MTS without any quality loss. Look through this blog to know how to make it done.

  • Log and Transfer doesn't "see" my camera

I just got back from an afternoon of recording the kids -- plug the camera into the computer, launch FCE and go to the log and transfer screen -- -and nothing. Panic now sets in. There seems to be nothing to be done, to get FCE to recognize the folder structure on my Canon Vixia FFS10 camera. What's up with that. (Why it needs a folder structure is strange to say the least)
It's not like the .MTS files aren't there. there's about 6GB of content that I'm anxious to get started transcoding. Is there something i'm missing on the log and transfer screen? The No Name disk is on my desktop, and using finder I can see the MTS files -- why FCE can't is strange.
    Suggestions?

I don't think I changed format on the SD card, although I can't be 100% sure, since I didn't format the card before today's shoot.
What I ended up doing, is copying the MTS files from the card to a scratch drive, and convert them to AIC using Voltaic, which I'm guessing is all the log and transfer does anyway.
Having done that I formatted the card, using the camera, then shot of a clip, and sure enough now the camera (which is no longer called no name, but rather called canon) is recognized by FCE and it looks like all is now working.
Is there a way to sending feed back to apple for future versions. It still seems to me that Log and Transfer is a bit too particular, when it comes to AVCHD.
