Import performance with mac
I have bought a Mac Pro within the last week and so at present I am not fully familiar with all its features.
I would appreciate any help with the following, when using lightroom v1.1.
When I import images from disk the first 20 or so images are imported very quickly (less than 5 seconds) the import then virtually stops for 5 minutes plus and proceeds at snails pace. If however I click on one of the imported images it seems to wake the Mac up and the remaining images (200+) are downloaded at an amazing speed.
The above happens if I click on an image at any stage of the download process including as soon as the process slows down.
My computer is a Mac Pro, 3.0Ghz processors with 4Gb of RAM.
Thank you
Michael Windle
Michael
Perhaps not too much help, but as a point of reference I have the following:
20 inch iMac
2Ghz Intel Core Duo
1.5GB memeory
I am running Lightroom v1.1
Have to say that with the above configuration I am experiencing no import or performance issues

ISCSI, AFP, SMB, and NFS performance with Mac OS X 10.5.5 clients
Been doing some performance testing with various protocols related to shared storage...
Client: iMac 24 (Intel), Mac OS X 10.5.5 w/globalSAN iSCSI Initiator version 3.3.0.43
NAS/Target: Thecus N5200 Pro w/firmware 2.00.14 (Linux-based, 5 x 500 GB SATA II, RAID 6, all volumes XFS except iSCSI which was Mac OS Extended (Journaled))
Because my NAS/target supports iSCSI, AFP, SMB, and NFS, I was able to run tests that show some interesting performance differences. Because the Thecus N5200 Pro is a closed appliance, no performance tuning could be done on the server side.
Here are the results of running the following command from the Terminal (where test is the name of the appropriately mounted volume on the NAS) on a gigabit LAN with one subnet (jumbo frames not turned on):
time dd if=/dev/zero of=/Volumes/test/testfile bs=1048576k count=4
In seconds:
iSCSI 134.267530
AFP 140.285572
SMB 159.061026
NFSv3 (w/o tuning) 477.432503
NFSv3 (w/tuning) 293.994605
Here's what I put in /etc/nfs.conf to tune the NFS performance:
nfs.client.allow_async = 1
nfs.client.mount.options = rsize=32768,wsize=32768,vers=3
Note: I tried forcing TCP as well as used an rsize and wsize that doubled what I had above. It didn't help.
I was surprised to see how close AFP performance came to iSCSI. NFS was a huge disappointment but it could have been limitations of the server settings that could not have been changed because it was an appliance. I'll be getting a Sun Ultra 64 Workstation in soon and retrying the tests (and adding NFSv4).
If you have any suggestions for performance tuning Mac OS X 10.5.5 clients with any of these protocols (beyond using jumbo frames), please share your results here. I'd be especially interested to know whether anyone has found a situation where Mac clients using NFS has an advantage. With fully functional ZFS expected in Snow Leopard Server, I thought I'd do some performance testing using a few different zpool configurations and post the results.
Client:
- iMac 24 (Intel), 2 GB of RAM, 2.3 GHz dual core
- Mac OS X 10.5.6
- globalSAN iSCSI Initiator 3.3.0.43
NAS/Target:
- Sun Ultra 24 Workstation, 8 GB of RAM, 2.2 GHz quad core
- OpenSolaris 2008.11
- 4 x 1.5 TB Seagate Barracuda SATA II in ZFS zpools (see below)
- For iSCSI test, created a 200 GB zvol shared as iSCSI target (formatted as Mac OS Extended Journaled)
Network:
- Gigabit with MTU of 1500 (performance should be better with jumbo frames).
Average of 3 tests of:
# time dd if=/dev/zero of=/Volumes/test/testfile bs=1048576k count=4
# zpool create vault raidz2 c4t1d0 c4t2d0 c4t3d0 c4t4d0
# zfs create -o shareiscsi=on -V 200g vault/iscsi
iSCSI with RAIDZ2: 148.98 seconds
# zpool create vault raidz c4t1d0 c4t2d0 c4t3d0 c4t4d0
# zfs create -o shareiscsi=on -V 200g vault/iscsi
iSCSI with RAIDZ: 123.68 seconds
# zpool create vault mirror c4t1d0 c4t2d0 mirror c4t3d0 c4t4d0
# zfs create -o shareiscsi=on -V 200g vault/iscsi
iSCSI with two mirrors: 117.57 seconds
# zpool create vault mirror c4t1d0 c4t2d0 mirror c4t3d0 c4t4d0
# zfs create -o shareiscsi=on -V 200g vault/iscsi
# zfs set compression=lzjb vault
iSCSI with two mirrors and compression: 112.99 seconds
Compared with my earlier testing against the Thecus N5200 Pro as an iSCSI target, I got roughly 16% better performance using the Sun Ultra 24 (with one less SATA II drive in the array). -
FC vs. iSCSI performance with Mac OS X Server
Hi All,
I've relied on direct-attached Fiber Channel storage for our network server volumes since the early days of the Xserve RAID units. We use our network volumes for graphic design needs (with large files) over a Gigabit network, with some Windows clients, too. We're currently running Mac OS X 10.5.8 Server on an Xserve quad core (2008 model) with a 16 TB Enhance Technology UltraStor RS16FS single controller RAID unit with 4Gbit FC. It's worked extremely well for us, but it's going on 3 years old now, and I'm looking to replace it with a dual controller RAID unit for added piece of mind, either from Enhance Technology, Promise, or another vendor. I'll also be increasing the capacity to 32 TB.
The big question is whether I should make the leap to iSCSI with a new RAID unit? I understand the advantages of iSCSI, but I'm concerned about its real-world performance and how taxing it would be on the server itself. Any decrease in performance from our existing 4Gbit FC would be unacceptable. I'm also concerned about the learning curve involved in setting up an iSCSI SAN, since my networking skills are fairly basic -- I really don't get into the advanced functions of our managed switches, and the one time I tried to set up link aggregation, things went horribly wrong! Direct-attached FC sounds a lot simpler.
I'd get a PCIe 4-port Gigabit Ethernet card from Small Tree and use our existing SMC TigerStack II managed Gigabit switch to aggregate the ports, unless anyone thinks a new dedicated switch would be better. I'd likely buy the ATTO iSCSI initiator to make everything happen. I suppose if I wanted to put the old FC RAID unit on the SAN, I could use the
Any opinions, suggestions, or links to benchmarks would be appreciated.
ThanksThanks for the reply, MrHoffman -- I appreciate your insights. Just to be clear, I'm currently using a 4Gbit FC RAID system directly connected to an Xserve with an Apple FC card, so there's no SAN.
Just to be clear, there's a SAN here. You just don't have a SAN switch, based on your description.
I'm sharing out the volumes on that RAID unit via AFP and SMB over the GbE network, so that's really where the bottleneck exists
That's typical, and why I pointed to the GbE as the bottleneck. (If you listen very carefully to the server, you can hear the little skidding sounds as each of the SAN packets decelerates onto the GbE.)
Ultimately, I would like to create a small SAN, if only to allow my backup server direct access to the main network volumes for D2D backups, and potentially to allow certain client computers direct access to the volumes. It would be far easier to do with iSCSI than with FC, since as you said, I could use my existing network infrastructure.
That's a PCI-X or PCIe-class Mac, the Xsan software, a switch, and another connection into your existing (yes, you have one) SAN. As for the array, the prices on those range from Not Too Exorbitant to Oh My Aching Wallet. Used gear (where you can find it) can be a decent investment when you're on a budget.
Xsan has a fixed price, and the SAN switches tend to show up on the used market; they're common in the enterprise space, and a 4 Gb SAN switch is not even remotely new gear.
If you need Big Cheap Storage, then Direct Attached Storage (DAS) approach will be your cheapest option. (You almost have a DAS configuration now.) A PCI-X or PCIe controller or a RAID controller connected out to a Big Dumb Disk Array, err, a JBOD, or into a Big Not-So-Dumb RAID Array. If you have a controller or an open slot in your Xserve box.
I'm leaning towards maybe just adding another 16-drive JBOD unit to the existing FC system to meet our short-term storage needs. That doesn't address my desire to get a dual controller unit. But really, how often do RAID controllers fail?
Um, how often? Usually only when you have no current backups and a deadline, in my experience. -
Performance with the new Mac Pros?
I sold my old Mac Pro (first generation) a few months ago in anticipation of the new line-up. In the meantime, I purchased a i7 iMac and 12GB of RAM. This machine is faster than my old Mac for most Aperture operations (except disk-intensive stuff that I only do occasionally).
I am ready to purchase a "real" Mac, but I'm hesitating because the improvements just don't seem that great. I have two questions:
1. Has anyone evaluated qualitative performance with the new ATI 5870 or 5770? Long ago, Aperture seemed pretty much GPU-constrained. I'm confused about whether that's the case anymore.
2. Has anyone evaluated any of the new Mac Pro chips for general day-to-day use? I'm interested in processing through my images as quickly as possible, so the actual latency to demosaic and render from the raw originals (Canon 1-series) is the most important metric. The second thing is having reasonable performance for multiple brushed-in effect bricks.
I'm mostly curious if anyone has any experience to point to whether it's worth it -- disregarding the other advantages like expandability and nicer (matte) displays.
Thanks.
BenThanks for writing. Please don't mind if I pick apart your statements.
"For an extra $200 the 5870 is a no brainer." I agree on a pure cost basis that it's not a hard decision. But I have a very quiet environment, and I understand this card can make a lot of noise. To pay money, end up with a louder machine, and on top of that realize no significant benefit would be a minor disaster.
So, the more interesting question is: has anyone actually used the 5870 and can compare it to previous cards? A 16-bit 60 megapixel image won't require even .5GB of VRAM if fully tiled into it, for example, so I have no ability, a priori, to prove to myself that it will matter. I guess I'm really hoping for real-world data. Perhaps you speak from this experience, Matthew? (I can't tell.)
Background work and exporting are helpful, but not as critical for my primary daily use. I know the CPU is also used for demosaicing or at least some subset of the render pipeline, because I have two computers that demonstrate vastly different render-from-raw response times with the same graphics card. Indeed, it is this lag that would be the most valuable of all for me to reduce. I want to be able to flip through a large shoot and see each image at 100% as instantaneously as possible. On my 2.8 i7 that process takes about 1 second on average (when Aperture doesn't get confused and mysteriously stop rendering 100% images).

Bad performance with Payables Open Interface Import
hello all
have a performance problem with the standard program Payables Open Interface Import, as this process is taking a long time to run.
could recommend some patch for this issue or a solution.
our application is 11.5.10.2 and Database 10g
now create a SR but to date we have not been sending the first plan of action
best regardsThere are many reasons this is a performance problem - search in MOS for "APXIIMPT performance" or "payables open interface import performance"
Your best bet is to work this thru an SR.
Have you traced the concurrent to determine where the bottleneck is ? Are statistics current ?

How does the mac mini perform with cs5
Just curious
How does the Intel HD Graphics 4000 in the new mac mini perform with cs5 photoshop cs6 photoshop?
thanks
TedJeff, I appreciate your comment, so you haven't had any problem with using the painttools in CS 6 photoshop and the 3d type etc, in other words all the features that CS6 photoshop has.
I was thinking about buying the mac mini but was concerned how it works with CS 5 (which I have) I will have to take another look at the MiniMac server with the 3000 card. I do a lot of Digital Painting primarily Painter 12.2 but and would like to use the Painter brushes in CS 5 ( have not upgraded to CS 6.) My Imac is 6 years old and really is not fast enough.
Thanks for replying

Mac performance with Exchange Server 2010 SP1
Hi All,
I have some issue with Mac OS X 10.7.2 performance with when setting up new email connection Microsoft Exchange Server.
1) Use Apple Mail to create a new EMAIL account for an Exchange Account using Auto discover. Note how long it takes. In my case, it takes almost two full minutes or more until it comes back and is fully set up (and starts synchronizing the server folders).
2) Now use Apple mail create a new EMAIL account MANUALLY -- just don't fill in the password... keep hitting Continue until it shows the POP setting. Select EXCHANGE and then fill in the appropriate details (mail.mydmain.com, check SSL enabled, etc.). Setting up an account this way takes only a few seconds.
3) Use Microsoft Outlook 2011 for mac to create new Email account for an Exchange using Auto discover. it takes few second to completed.
I can summarize that:
- Use Apple Mail to create a new EMAIL account for an Exchange Account using Auto discover: Slow
- Use Apple mail create a new EMAIL account MANUALLY: Normal
- Use Microsoft Outlook 2011 for mac to create new Email account for an Exchange using Auto discover: Normal
In any case, do you have any solution to fix this issue.Hi,
I'd like to know how did you set "send on behalf",from outlook give delegation permission or from Exchange Server give "send as" right?
Please try to use get-adpermission to verify if the user has "send as" right.
Manage Send As Permissions for a Mailbox
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb676368.aspx
Note: After you grant send as right, please try to restart Microsoft Information Store.
By the way, do you receive any NDR or error information when you send on behalf of others?

I cannot perform security update with Mac OS X v10.411
I cannot perform security update with Mac OS X v10.411. My Mac Book Pro is super behind concerning updates and security.
Yes, I too have that problem. And, I have actually been hacked into, had all of my files, folders, photos, applications, sys pref, (in-other-words) EVERYTHING copied and recopied. It has been a nightmare. My identity was completely stolen. What makes it worse is that when I told apple ~ I was told by 1 Apple Supervising Technician that I was out of my mind and that it wasn't possible. He was very dismissive and treated me if I were some kind of idiot. Well, check out below. This is since Saturday or Sunday last. I didn't authorize this and I sure as **** don' know who any of these people are.
I installed the 10.5 disk. And I too, like many Macbook Pro users had the "Black Screen" bug. So I had to go back to 10.4. I went back and this is what I inherited. I now rarely have control over the computer, never my printer and I my security has been and is constantly being compromised. I believe that Apple needs to own up to this and, perhaps, do something about it? Am I asking too much?

To your question to clear the track
You can delete your track as described in the below link, and then recreate the track and reimport.
Link: [Deleting Track|http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70/helpdata/EN/33/71fe94e1834af8b5bd3c0e1de5ab41/frameset.htm]
Do not forget to delete DTR workspace.
Do reward points if you find the link useful.

Import problems with LR 4.4
I am suddenly having problems importing photos with Lightroom. I get an error message "Some import operations were not performed. The following files were not imported because they could not be read." Doesn't matter what camera I am using. I can open, convert and import the photos with Bridge. I have the Destination dropdown menu set to "All folders." I am using a Mac.
Can someone help?I too am having this issue. I bring them in from the card and all is well under bridge or PS. When they come into LR I get some windows that say (library/import) say that some images can not be displayed. Then I import. It bring all the images in, even the one that it said it can't read. Then in the end it reports back that XXX number of images could not be read.
However, after clicking OK, they are in the library. When it goes to render the preview that were it all goes down in flames. Renders turn out pink, yellow, green bands as if the images are corrupt and in short the whole thing looks like your worst nightmare. In review of the image on the drive all is well.
In desperation I down loaded a trial version, loaded it in and wrote over the LR4.4 file on the drive. Launched LR. It read the SN# and we were off and running. I have had this issue on two computers.
Bug?
Best of luck,

Hi! After 3 months of pushing, I finally got a Mac Pro 2.8ghz 8-core with Final Cut Studio 2. I just got the workstation setup and Final Cut Studio installed, all the updates are completed. Now I am getting down into some light training with some DV footage I have to familiarize myself with the capabilities of this system. So far I have not been impressed. I imported 2 30-sec DV clips, dropped them into the sequence with crossfades, and when I playback, I hear 2 seconds of audio followed by beeps, and at the point where the clips are supposed to cross-dissolve the playback stops with a warning that frames have been dropped. I had better performance with iMovie on my G4. I know that FCP is a bigger beast but having worked with Avid MC on a PowerMac 9600 I am expecting more out of this setup. What in the world could I be doing wrong?

When I open the .dv clip in Quicktime it shows format: DV, 720x480 (640x480), Millions, Stereo, 48.000 kHz. What else should I check?
Ahh, I think I see your issue - and it's something that many folks who are moving up from iMovie experience.
Basically, FCP doesn't like .dv files. It likes .mov files. Open up you .dv file in QuickTime and export it out as a QuickTime movie (a .mov file). Be sure to select the Options... button in the export dialog (since you're bound to be overwhelmed, use the settings from your FCP Timeline as a guide) in QuickTime. Using the default settings in QT will not help you (the default is meant for web sharing, not editing, and will end up being step backwards).
In the future, avoid using iMovie captured material in FCP. Capture and digitize using FCP. Don't ask me why Apple decided to do this, but you cannot simply port your files from iMovie and get them working in FCP without a lot of hassle. -
External Drive "unable to be modified" with Mac
Hi,
I've just begun playing around with my laptop, but am running into problems while moving things around and off of my external hard drive.
Before my Mac that I just got today, I had a Gateway PC laptop that I used my external hard drive with. On the Mac, whenever I try to move a file to a new folder it says that it cannot be moved because the drive cannot be modified. Also, I can't create new folders or even delete things.
I think it has something to do with the formatting, but is there anything I can do that will NOT erase what I have on the hard drive? I have 200+ gigs of data on this drive and no where to temporarily place it while I reformat the drive.
Also, if I do have to reformat the drive, is there a format that works both with Macs and Windows, so I can still use it on friends' and parents' computers.

Disk Utility is in your "Utilities" folder (of course). Here's how we do this:
/Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility
Let's cover a few terms while we're at it... Disk Utility is rather like iTunes in the way it looks (in fact, most everything "Mac" has a lot of features similar to those in iTunes). The list at the left side of the Disk Utility window (as in iTunes) is called the "source list." In the case of DU, this list shows "devices" and "volumes" at the top. Below those would be shown recent "disk images" that DU may have created or handled (you won't have any, and "disk images" are something you won't encounter for at least a few hours ).
A "device" is something physical, like your Superdrive or internal hard drive, and a "volume" is a logical "container" for files that is created on a given device. Think of it like the trunk of your car (the device), and the organizer you place in that trunk (a volume). DU shows volumes indented below the device that contains them. Since a volume is a logical framework (we call it a "file system") that holds your files, it is actually written to the device.
Windows uses specific "logical frameworks" (NTFS, FAT-32), and Mac OS uses a somewhat different one (HFS+). The Mac OS can, however, read any of the Windows formats ('cause Macs are more better, as you've already found), and DU knows how to write those FAT-32 logical frameworks.
OK, moving on... DU does many things. It can format (erase) volumes, changing them while it's at it if desired, but it can also format or partition a device. There's a bit of a difference between the two, sometimes. For example, you can "zero" either a device or a volume (which means to write continuous zeroes to the entire volume or device, in addition to simply giving it a new framework). One either a device or a volume, this is something you would do to completely destroy whatever data is on the device/volume. If you do it with a device, however, you get the additional benefit of "mapping out" any bad blocks (like dead spots) on the drive. This comes in handy if you ever find you're having problems with your drive.
Another difference between devices and volumes is that devices can be "partitioned". This is when you create multiple volumes on a single device. These separate volumes would appear on the Desktop of your Mac as individual drives, but they all reside on the one device. And of course, they can be of different formats (on my Desktop, I currently have my HFS+ Mac startup disk, and another NTFS disk for Bootcamp, both of them on my internal hard drive).
DU also repairs (or attempts to) errors that might occur in that logical framework we've already covered. These happen for various reasons, most frequently if we have an improper shutdown (such as a power loss). When this happens, we can lose important data. DU attempts to locate the problem, then fix it.
Finally, Disk Utility is what we use to create and manage "disk images". These are single files that act as "virtual disks," and can be "mounted" and "ejected" just like real disks. This is something that you will encounter soon, I'm sure, but don't need to worry about right yet.
I'll continue in another post (yeeesh, am I long-winded sometimes)... -
I have a 3 year old MacBook Pro with MAC OSX 10.6.8, iPhoto ’09 version 8.1.2 and have downloaded two software programs: one is Aperture 3.2 and the other is Photoshop Elements 9 (which I got from a friend who didn’t need it).
I am totally happy with the way iPhoto organizes my photos and how I can work with iMovie to create slide shows with music from iTunes, etc.
I have been shooting mostly high resolution jpegs and I continue to learn more and more about photography, post processing etc. I realize that the small adjustments I can make in iPhoto are good, and are adequate most of the time. However, a have started to experiment with shooting RAW images and would like to go the next step, ie. post processing.I am totally technically challenged and need SIMPLE, INTUITIVE programs and am certainly NOT anywhere ready for Photoshop CS whatever!
After having these programs sit on my computer, I decided to try to see if I could figure them out. When I opened Aperture, this is what first comes up.
“Welcome to Aperture 3.2
Your library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of Aperture. Once upgraded, you will not be able to use this library with previous versions of Aperture.
Upgrading a library from previous versions of Aperture 3 generally takes a few minutes or less, though larger libraries will take longer. After that, Aperture 3.2 will upgrade your library's thumbnails, but you can use the application during that time.
Tip: To open a different library, quit Aperture and hold the Option key down while starting Aperture
Current Library Location:
Jadzia (home) -----Pictures------Aperture Library
QUIT UPGRADE”
I have heard horror stories about moving your entire library to Aperture, ending up with 2 libraries, etc. etc. hence my previous reluctance in attempting Aperture. In addition, many of my photography friends are saying: Go with Lightroom 3.....you’ll love it!
So here is my dilemma. I don’t want to mess around with my iPhoto library. All I want to be able to do, is to isolate a few photos, export them to Aperture, Elements, and work on them there, then bring them back into iPhoto.
Can I do this? Should I forget about Aperture and Elements and look at purchasing yet another program like Lightroom?Export those few photos via the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option with Kind = Original to the Desktop. Then import them into the Aperture library. That would keep one copy in your iPhoto library and another in your Aperture library to edit, etc.
You can use Photoshop Elements 9 from within iPhoto as your editor of choice. However, if you edit a raw file in iPhoto with PSE9 the resulting edited version must be saved outside the iPhoto Library and imported back in as a new file. For editing jpegs just do a Save (not a Save As) and it all will be kept within iPhoto.
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always. In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
Note: to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.
