Import photos w/edits from laptop to desktop

I used my laptop to edit photos I took this week while on vacation.  I'm looking for the most convenient way to import them from my laptop to my desktop including the edits.  Basically don't want to re-edit the photos.  Whats the best way?  I'm running LR3 3.5 and OSX 10.7.1 (Lion) on both computers.
Thanks,
Mike

Are the photos imported into both computers’ LR catalogs, yet, and/or is it your intent to make this a one-way transfer from laptop to desktop, or are you wanting to work with the photos in both places from here on out?
If it is a one-way transfer and they only exist in the laptop’s LR catalog, then select all the photos you want to transfer—perhaps use a collection so you can re-select them easier, later, use (on Windows it is) LR / File / Export as Catalog to create a small, temporary LR catalog with the settings and to a flash-drive/card-in-card-reader/other external drive or across the network to a temporarily location, containing just the edits/settings of the photos in question, and then copy that catalog and the photos to the desktop, then import that small catalog into the desktop’s catalog and use Locate Missing Photos from one of the thumbnails to re-hook-up the photos if the paths are different between the to computers.
A slightly less useful alternative because it doesn’t contain ALL the settings in LR, is to write XMP files for all the photso in question, then copy the photos and XMP files over to the desktiop, then import the photos into the desktop catalog, where it’ll pick up the current edits from the XMP files.
If you already have the current photos in both locations, then if you can keep track of what you’re doing well enough, either remove the exact set of photos from the desktop and import them, again, using one of the two procedures, above, or you can copy the XMP files over from the laptop and re-read all the metadata for the photos to get their edits up-to-date.
If the photos are supposed to be moved from the laptop to the desktop, then after you’re satisfied they are safely on the desktop, you should remove them from the laptop to avoid confusion.  If all the photos on the laptop’s LR are moving, then just delete the catalog, but if only some are, then remove them from the catalog and hard-disk by deleting them using the same selection you used to export the photos or write the XMP files, earlier.
If the photos are supposed to be worked on in both places, then having the photos and LR catalog on an external drive is the only reasonable way to do this, so after consolidating all the photos into one LR catalog using the above prodedure, then copy all the photos to an external HD and copy the LR catalog as well, and tell LR to open the catalog on the external drive and re-find the missing photos because the path to the external drive isn’t the same as on the local drive, I wouldn’t think, although I’m a Windows guy so am not exactly sure.  Once you are satisfied everything is working on the external drive, figure out a way to back up that external drive somewhere so if you drop it, you still have your work, and then you can remove the photos from the local drive on the desktop, unless you’ve decided that is where your backup will be.

  • Transferring Lightroom Edits from Laptop to Desktop?

On a recent vacation I loaded and edited over 1500 photos in Lightroom 2.0 on an Apple Macbook Pro laptop. I would like to transfer the edited photos to my desktop imac which also has Lightroom 2.0 installed. How can I best transfer the files from the laptop to the desktop while maintaining the ability to selectively modify the individual edit steps such as cropping and tone adjustments. I appreciate that I could export the edited files as jpegs or TIFFs but this would preclude the ability to go back and change earlier edit steps. Thanks for your suggestions.

An easy way would be to export your images as a new catalog. That copies all images, their previews and adjustments to a new location. If you connect your Macs either via Wireless, Ethernet or Firewire you can copy straight across to a destination folder on the iMac.
Otherwise you could also use an external hard disk.
To do so, go to   File  >> Export as Catalog…  In the dialog box that comes up select a destination folder, name your catalog and make sure to check "Export negative files" and "Include available previews" and proceed with the export. Depending on the amount of images, that could take a while.
Once it's complete, simply open the newly created LR catalog file on the iMac. If you already have a LR catalog on the iMac, you probably want to merge both catalogs. That can be achieved by opening the existing catalog on your iMac first, and then go to  File  >>  Import from Catalog. Select the previously exported catalog and click OK.
However if you want to go back and forth in the future between the laptop and iMac while maintaining identical LR catalogs and -libraries on both, you might want to use a different approach.
I for instance synchronise my libraries between two Macs using a portable hard disk, which is an exact mirror image of the drive that holds all my work files (not just LR's image library).

I have moved my iPhoto to an external hard drive. so now I have to have the external hard drive connected to my laptop to view the photos.  Now when I want to import photos into iPhoto from my media card, I don't have room to connect both devices at the same time as the usb ports are side by side.  How do I import my photos from the media card to the external hard drive now?

First transfer the photos to a folder on your MacBook using Image Capture in your Utilities folder. Then move them to iPhoto.
BTW, you might want to invest in a cheap USB hub.

When trying to import photos with iPhoto from photoshop... won't let me keeps saying that the photos are already in the iPhoto library but they are not

If you are using Photoshop from within iPhoto the following may help with the workflow.  However, we do need to know the answers to the questions posed by Terence and Larry to be able to help you.
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
With Photoshop Elements  the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
    Screenshots are from PSE 10
Note 1:  to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.
Note 2:  editing a RAW file with either PSE or PS creates a new file which must be saved outside of iPhoto, i.e. the Desktop, and imported as a new photo into the iPhoto Library.

Does this happen if you try to Import to Library within iPhoto, or is it when you connect your camera (and which is set to automatically use iPhoto) that this error message occurs?
If you open Image Capture > Preferences is iPhoto selected as the choice when a camera is connected?

The title implies "importing photos & videos from previous versions" and only deals with "Organizer".  It does not mention if regular "JPG" or other formats need to change.   It does not discuss if images have been moved from one location to another folder or directory.  It does not discuss any issues of previous versions or backward compatability of formats.

How do I import photos to iPad2 from different folders in my Mac?
I have a few folders of photos in my mac that I want to be on my iPad2. How do I go about on doing that?
It seems like I need to put all the folders into one folder and point iTunes to that main folder.
The thing is I don't want to copy them (waste of space) and I don't want to move them (my photos are organized).
So is there a way for me to import photos from different folders in my mac to my iPad2?
    Thank you!
    BTW... I don't use iPhoto.

You can't, natively with the iPhone. The photo sync is one way: computer to phone. To do what you want requires third-party software, like this:

  • How to import photos and videos from Android device?

    Hello
I just bought Photoshop Elements 11 recently and I'm trying to import photos and videos from my phone, Samsung Galaxy SIII, but having a little trouble.
When I go to "Import from Camera or Card Reader" option and choose my phone from the "Get photos from" drop down menu in "Source" section the "Photo downloader" finds
every single photo and/or video stored on the device and it's memory card but I'm trying to import only photos and/or videos I've shot my self with the phone, witch is kept
in an folder named DCIM, but I simply can't figure out how to so my question is:
How do I import photos and/or videos from my Android device?

Try clicking Advanced button (bottom left) in the downloader dialog. You should then be able to select and deselect thumbnails and import only the ones you give the checkmark.

Make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and try the three fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - delete  the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #3
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

    Try This...
Close All Open Apps... Sign Out of your Account... Perform a Reset... Try again...
Reset  ( No Data will be Lost )
Press and Hold the Sleep/Wake Button and the Home Button at the Same Time...
Wait for the Apple logo to Appear...
Usually takes about 15 - 20 Seconds... ( But can take Longer...)
    Release the Buttons...
    Note:
Also consider Deleting any Apps you have Purchased / Downloaded but you now never use...

  • How do I move photos from laptop to desktop WITH Lightroom Edits?

I have Lightroom on my laptop and on my desktop.
I've just done a big shoot with my camera tethered to Lightroom on my laptop, and applied some develop settings as the photos were imported.  I also did a little cropping and a few other adjustments when I stopped shooting for lunch.
Now, I'd like to move these photos with the edit history to my desktop machine because it's got the big guns for processing photos.
How do I do this?  There must be a way!
    Thanks so much!
    --Michael

In LR on the laptop, in the Library module select the photos you want to move.
    "Export as catalog".
On the desktop, in LR "import from catalog" using the exported catalog.
Or you could just import the whole laptop catalog depending on your needs.
