Import photos without copying? I Have thousands of photos on a hard drive separate from my mac and i dont have enough space on my mac to copy them to. Any way to import without copying to the local hard drive?

Yes, but you might want to think carefully about it.
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing. The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.
This is an attractive option for some users at face value, but it contains a significant number of issues that you might want to consider before making the decision to run a Referenced Library
How to do it:
iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck the box at 'Copy items to the iPhoto Library'
Now when you import iPhoto makes an alias in the Library Package that points to the stored file. Note: iPhoto still creates a thumbnail of the image and it makes a Preview of edited photos inside the Library Package.
Issues?
1. You are responsible for file management. That's more work:
You must first move the files from your camera to the storage location before importing.
If you want to delete files then you must first trash them from iPhoto and then afterwards find them in your storage and trash them.
Thereafter, you cannot move the files on early versions of iPhoto at all, on iPhoto 08 and later you may move them on the same Volume or Disk. If you move them to a new volume or disk the aliases my break. If they are on an different volume and you move them the aliases will break.
You cannot rename the files.
Migrating: moving to a new machine, moving the files to another disk are all a lot more complex.
2. You gain no extra functionality from running a Referenced Library. Nothing. This is just storage. You still manage the files via iPhoto. You edit them with iPhoto or via iPhoto's External Editor setting, otherwise you're changes will not be available in iPhoto. You don't save  byte of storage space.
3.  If you have the Library on one volume and the photos on another you if anything changes in the path to a file (Like if you upgrade your machine, move the files on the NAS or on to another one?) then the alias will break, and you'll have to repair it manually. For every photo in the Library. One at a time.
Why do you want to run a Referenced Library?
Because my photos won't fit on my HD?
You can run a Managed library from an external disk. Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
You're worried about accessing the files?
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

I sent in my iPod nano to the replacement program about two weeks back. However, I checked the status of the repair and it still says it has not been received yet. However, my boyfriend sent in his the same time I did and his repair status says repair being diagnosed. I still have the "receipt" of the package when they first sent it to me. I sent it via FedEx. Is there any way to follow up on where the nano could be or maybe find out if I can still get a replacement even though my nano might be lost in transit?

Call FedEx.  They will be able to track their own packages.  They will let you know if your iPod Nano was delivered and to who!

  • Hi kids, my first day using apple, anyway, is a Power Book 4.1 , bought from someone else, and i dont have the password for the key chain, and no chances of getting it, the screen, for the password keeps on coming up, any ideas?

my  first day using apple, i love it, is a power 4.1, older, but is ok to learn it, however, i bought it from someone , and i was not
given the password for key chain, so, this screen keeps on coming up, and i dont know the password, so i keep on canceling out
of it, ..... any ideas on how to fix this problem, is the key chain, that you can access through utilities, but i dont have the old password, that is my first
    problem
my second problem is that the key board, closer to the screen, is coming out, as it needs to be put in place, you would imagine you can
put it back in place, but, not sure i should mess with it, any input would be greatly appreciated it
    thank you
    lisa

Hi, Lisa. Now I see what you're desperate about.
Does it allow you to go ahead and use the iBook after you cancel the Keychain login? If so, it's not a big deal.
Are you able to go to System Preferences > Accounts and create a new account for yourself? That should eliminate Keychain password problems.
Check out these instructions on replacing the keyboard:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=111917
Maybe they will help you get it seated better. It's considered a customer-installable part, so it should be easy enough for you to handle without worrying about goofing anything up.
What CDs (if any) came with the iBook?
Which version of the operating system is it running?
How big is the hard drive and how much space remains available on it? If it's the original hard drive, it's getting very old and could fail at any time. The identifier "PowerBook 4,1" tells me that the iBook is ten years old, and is either a 500 or 600 MHz PowerPC G3 (Dual USB) iBook. As such, you can't expect a whole lot from it.
The optical drive on this iBook could be a CD-ROM (reads CDs only), CD-RW (reads and writes CDs; no DVD capability), DVD (reads CDs and DVDs), or Combo (reads and writes CDs; reads DVDs) drive.
    Good luck with it.

  • I have the newest IPad and want to download photos from my computer to the IPad.  The instructions say to put photos under My Pictures, but I have thousands of photos in that category.  I don't want to download all my photos, just the newest ones.  Help!

I have the newest IPad and want to download photos from my computer.  However, I have thousands of photos stored under My Pictures on my desktop.  How can I transfer just the newest album to my IPad?  I'm afraid that all the photos will be downloaded.  Please advise.

Another way. You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)

  • Is there any way to import the PST file to Thunderbird

My boss used Outlook 2010 to store all his emails. Is there any way to import the PST file to Thunderbird so he can access them from a new computer?
Thunderbird cannot be installed on the old computer and Outlook is not on the new computer. All information is saved in a PST file on our local backup.
Alternatively, is there a way to convert to a file type that CAN be imported? This is a 5GB file. (I know, I KNOW, but I cannot convince him he doesn't need all of these emails.)

Does he use an e-mail provider with sufficient mailbox space? In that case, you can move the e-mail back to the server and download it using Thunderbird.
This only works when you configure the e-mail account with IMAP (not POP3).
    Hope this helps.

  • I am recently retired and have thousands of photos I need to ? scan and put in iphoto.  What is the quickest way to do this please?

Can anybody help me organise my photos efficiently?
I have thousands of photos which I need to scan & add to my library, any suggestions?

    Scanner 100$ ( a guess)
    Your time 20$ an hour
    1 Thousand photos
1 scan =1 min (if you choose low res)
Time to figure out which resolution you want=?
Time to sort organize/agonize about keeping it?
does the scanner come with some great software that will make naming and sorting easy?
    240$ / 20$ = 12 hours
1000 minutes / 60 = 16 hours  now  I know for me it would take longer than the 1 minute to scan all those photos and you have to factor in how long it takes the scanner to scan at your given resolution and the size of the photo.
I think scan time would be a major factor for me since I know I would want the photos at a really high res. I've hardly seen a scanner/printer that is a reasonable price and quick. But they may be out there this year.
I am still going with the scan service.

    Kind regards,

First what I think is wrong is output filter should work on dynamic files and not static files like images.
I am unable to reproduce it even inside a web-app. We need your web-app to see whats happening. Can you reproduce it for every single request you send to he server? Can you run web server in log-level finest (change server.xml <log-level> element) so that we can know some more detials. Just send finest log for one request.
I was just checking the syntax of compression directives I found these examples, (underlined lines are new lines that should be added)
    For dynamic compression :
    =====================
    <Object name="default">
    NameTrans fn="assign-name" from="*.jsp" name="compress"
    </Object>
    _<Object name="compress">_
    Output fn="insert-filter" filter="http-compression"
    _</Object>_
Do not use this for static files.
There should be only one insert-filter directive. Why do you have two? That could be a problem.
    For static compression :
    =================
    <Object name="default">
    NameTrans fn="assign-name" from="*.html" name="find-compressed"
    Service method=(GET|HEAD|POST) type=*~magnus-internal/* fn=compress-file subdir=".compressed-files"
    Service method=(GET|HEAD|POST) type=*~magnus-internal/* fn=send-file
    </Object>
    _<Object name="find-compressed">_
    PathCheck fn="find-compressed"
    _</Object>_
Do not use this for dymanic files.
(if u dont have fn=compress-file line its ok it will just create a .gz file if not present in .compressed-files directory without this directive u need to keep pre compressed file in docroot for find-compressed to work)

  • Netboot and the local hard drive?

I got a quick netboot option running on a test server (before enabling or messing with the production Xserve) and I've been able to boot several workstations and it's actually faster than I thought it might be. However, I was hoping I could use this for a couple of troubleshooting operations that I don't seem to be able to run.
For example, I would like to netboot a Mac and use the Disk Utility to "repair disk" on the local hard drive. The Disk Utility says that the operation failed because it could not unmount the volume.
When we image a Mac through the Terminal, all the invisible folders, files and links appear. We normally repair this after imaging, but a few Macs were overlooked. I was hoping that, instead of carrying around and booting off a FireWire hard drive to repair them, I would be able to quickly netboot and run the terminal command to re-hide the files. Unfortunately, this causes the same kernel panic that occurs when you do this on the the booted hard drive.
Perhaps I'm misunderstanding how netboot is supposed to work, but it appears that the local hard drive is still being used to the point where netbooting is really useless for these kinds of operations. Any advice or tips would be appreciated.
    -Doug

There is a diskless option for netboot that works fine within a single subnet. It is not on by default and must be turned on from Server Admin -> NetBoot -> Images. You will also need AFP running on a sever in the subnet (preferably the same server).
See page 46 and 49 of this document for more details:
    <http://images.apple.com/server/pdfs/SystemImage_and_SW_Updatev10.4C.pdf>
You also may want to look into Remote Desktop as a way of running scripts on multiple Macs en masse.
Diskless NetBooting works and works well. I use it at work with Remote Desktop to boot a remote Mac, run Disk Utility and Disk Warrior, then reboot. I have also used diskless netbooting for remote Panther to Tiger OS upgrades.
Diskless NetBoot is slick and has saved me gobs of time.

  • Any way to import from another drive and leave clips in place?

    Hi
Is there any way to import from other drives where you can leave your media in place?
Whenever I've imported clips from another drive I had to copy them to the library, while clips on the same drive as the library I could leave in place. Besides getting a bit tired of FCP treating like a kid with Alzheimer's, what would one do, say, when a drive gets full? I could see big projects needing more than a single drive.
    best
    elmer

LIke Russ said, the copy of the entire folder structure is similar to creating a camera archive. This copy or archive is treated just as if it were a camera card - in particular, "leave in place" is not available, and you have the option go import just parts of clips if you want.
so technicay even though they reside in a hard drive this is like importing from camera, as opposed to "import from file".
I Will try to describe how I handle my media. I hope this will help clarify things a bit. I am not saying thus is the way to do things, but it is my way.
I keep archives of the camera cards, which I then erase and reuse.
I import clips from my camera archives which I store as external media (copying to a folder of my choosing instead of into the library). These movie files, plus other files that I get from other sources, can be later imported and used in other libraries using "leave in place".
And all of this of course needs to be regularly backed up.

  • Is there any way to import from ipod back to itunes??

I have a problem... my hardrive over heated last week, and I lost EVERYTHING. I have to start completely over, and just redownloaded itunes to my fixed computer. luckily, I had a good amount of my music saved on my ipod. however, is there any way to import the other way around, and move music from my ipod back onto my computers and itunes??? i cant stand having an empty library!
    -briana

Bit of a pain but possible:
    1) My documents, tools, folder options, show hidden files
    2) open itunes
    3) edit, preferences
The most important bit coming up:
    4) LEAVE PREFERENCES OPEN THROUGHOUT WHOLE PROCESS, OTHERWISE IPOD WILL BE WIPED.
    5) plug in ipod
    6) open my computer
    7) ipod should be in devices with removable storage
    8) into ipod
    9) into ipod control
    10) into music
    11) select all
    12) copy
    13) into my documents
    14) into my music
    15) into itunes (folder)
    16) into itunes music (folder)
    17) paste
    when the paste has finished:
    18) use remove ipod icon on toolbar to get ipod disconnected safely
    19) into itunes program
    20) close preferences
    21) file, add folder to library
    22) find your way back to itunes music folder
and there it all is. Go back to hiding hidden folders in tools, folder options when done, or they can get in the way (or deleted by mistake!)
no idea how to do any of this on a mac, i'm a PC user!
    take it easy,
