Import pictures
Hello all
Have had much success assigning a picture to user accounts (which appear in login lists on clients) via Workgroup Manager in the past. It's quite easy to turn the inspector on, click an account, add a Picture attribute and tell it where to find the file.
Now the tricky part. I have a folder full of photos of students that I have copied out to several network computers. The files are named with the same number as their User ID.
I would like to set each user account to use the appropriate photo and so set about creating an import file for Workgroup Manager. A sample is shown below. I have followed the command line admin guide to the letter!
*-- SAMPLE --*
0x0D 0x5C 0x3A 0x2C dsRecTypeStandard:Users 6 dsAttrTypeStandard:RecordName dsAttrTypeStandard:Password dsAttrTypeStandard:UniqueID dsAttrTypeStandard:PrimaryGroupID dsAttrTypeStandard:RealName dsAttrTypeStandard:Picture
fnerk:fred:430312345:2004:Frd Nerk:"/Library/User Pictures/Photos/430312345.jpg":
bbunter:betty:430312346:2002:Betty Bunter:"/Library/User Pictures/Photos/430312346.jpg":
*-- SAMPLE --*
No matter what setting I apply for duplicates when I import the file (Append, Add to Empty, Overwrite), the "dsAttrTypeStandard:Picture" attribute is never added.
Is it because the accounts already exist? (I thought they could always be appended...)
Have also tried just importing the data with a plaintext file which brings up a dialogue box in Workgroup Manager that lets you pick and choose what records to import and how to import them. The picture path is recognised as a record and I can assign it to the "Picture" attribute, but still no luck.
Thanks in advance.
Well it's not for the users themselves to go and access /Library/User Pictures/Photos .. it's so that in a login window with a list of names it shows their account picture.
I did try importing the same info but with JPEGPhoto instead of Picture. Can't find any reference to JPEGPhoto within Workgroup Manager so I guess it's not an attribute it recognises?
I might have a go at making a script with the dscl -create for each record using the import file I made.. Could work out better for future use anyhow as it took me a while to format the import file originally.
Cheers.

I am using MAC os version of elements 12 with OS 10.9.4 (the latest). When I am importing pictures from a card elements freezes consistently and needs to be voce closed. When I then restart elements it continues to bring the pictures in but this is very tedious and I need to get the matter resolved,

I would do another rename to disable or just delete all the OldFilm.AEX and OldFilm.AEXOLD in that NewBlue Folder.
If you do, please let me know if that OldFilm.AEX regenerates itself the next time you open Premiere Elements 13.
Here is the strange story...at least from my Premiere Elements 13 Windows perspective...never had the No Disc error issue
Here are some details to sort through trying to figure out why you have 2 OldFilm.AEX file in the NewBlue Folder.
1. The original OldFilm.AEX file of Premiere Elements 13 has the date of 9/4/2014 (just before the version was released on 9/24/2014).
After the 13.1 update is done (whenever date), that OldFilm.AEX file has the date of 1/31/2015. I first saw notification of the 13.1 Update
release early in February 2015.
2. Now in Premiere Elements 13.1, if I take my OldFilm.AEX (date 1/31/2015) and disable it by renaming it to OldFilm.AEXOLD, close out of there, and reopen
the program, the OldFilm.AEX is not seen to regenerate. The OldFilm.AEXOLD remains there as its lone self.
3. So, I am thinking that your OldFilm.AEXOLD in the screenshoot is "original equipment" that you disabled to get rid of No disc error.
Why the OldFilm.AEX is there also is not clear, but the dating on it suggests that it came along with the 13.1 Update.
Bottom line: let us try the deletion or disabling one more time and see what happens.
Looking forward to further reports on your findings, as your time permits.
Thanks.

I updated my Macbook Pro last week to Lion. I went to go import pictures from a memory card to my iPhoto, but only a portion of them loaded before my iPhoto froze and I had to Force Quit it. Now iPhoto won't even open... Help!
Please! I need an answer fast!!!!Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

How do I create sub folders for imported pictures in iPad albums?
I have imported some photos to my iPad for a presentation. The pictures were in different folder under the main folder. After I import the main folder the sub folders are deleted and now all the picture are in one folder. How can I keep the original main folder with sub folders when importing pictures in iPad photo?
Not within the Photos app, but there are other photo management apps in the App Store which allow you to create albums within albums e.g. Photo Manager Pro - that app lets you copy photos to/from the Photos app and copy photos via iTunes : Photo Manager Pro help pages.

How can I import pictures from my iphone to PC which I imported to the iphone from another PC? The folder doesn't show on my computer. I see all other pictures I took with the phone but not the imported folder.
Photos that were synced from a computer won't show for copying to a computer. If you want to copy them back then you will need a third-party app on your phone such as Simple Transfer which can copy them off via your wifi network. But photos are 'optimised' when they are synced to a device, any that you then copy back to a computer may not be exactly the same as they originally were on your computer (e.g. their dimensions might be different and their colours may look a bit different).

I've tried to look this up on the app, and it tells me to use the iTunes file sharing and I can see anything with this trying to use both. I'm trying to keep my pictures in chronological order. Does in know how I can use this? Any help I would greatly appreciate. Thank you!
OK. This is two separate issues. To import pictures on your iPhone into your MBP, you can use iPhoto or the Image Capture app (in the Applications folder).
To use iPhoto, connect your iPhone to your Mac with its USB cable & launch iPhoto. Your iPhone will be listed it in the "Devices" panel on the left. Choose it & you will get a window where you can import all or selected photos as either "split events" or as a single event. If you need help with this, try opening iPhoto's built-in help & selecting the "Import Photos" item. That will open the Import photos from iPhone or other mobile phone help topic. Expand the Import photos from iPhone section & study it. It should answer all your questions about this better than I can!
To use the Image Capture app, you connect the iPhone & select it just like above. The app has several options for importing images, but what you may find useful if you do not want to import directly into iPhoto is that you can just drag any of the iPhone's displayed items onto the desktop or into a folder like you would any other file & they will be copied to that location.
As for organization of items in iPhoto, there are four ways they can be grouped for display (by event, by photo, by face, & by place). All except by faces offers a "By date" sort choice in the iPhoto View > Sort Photos menu item. -
I can't import pictures into iPhoto. (f I can right click and there is a choice to put in iPhoto that works fine) . No matter what happens, even when I download them first, all that imports is a mass of pictures of flags and masks, and they are the only things that are imported, no matter what picture I try to import into my librarly. Can anyone help me with this? I live in a small down 5 hours from an apple store so I can't just take it in and get somene to look at it.
I am on a Macbook Pro. I called AppleCare and all i got was 'gee, I don't know'. Everything was fine until about 3 weeks agoElaine. What are you trying to import from? Are you inserting a camera memory card in the slot on the side of your mac? Are you connecting your camera to the mac through a USB cable? It sounds like you can see your pictures, where do you see them, on the memory card that you open on your desktop, or are you using software that came with your camera?

Yesterday my autistic daughter was using my phone, as she often does. Some things got deleted. I went to do a restore and it showed the last backup was 4/1/14. My phone auto synced at 10:51 AM on 4/3/14. I had to leave, and when I came back itunes no longer recognized my phone. Its charging, it can import pictures, but nothing on itunes works. I wanted to do a restore, but now I only see the 10:51 backup, which is after selected items were deleted.
My questions: How can I make Itunes recognize my iphone (running windows 8) How can I find the backup from 4/1/14, as it has the most current information?
Any help would be appreciated.

How do I import pictures from computer files more than one at a time ?
I recieved the adobe photoshop elements 10 for x mas and no problems with downloading the program but i am having a time importing pictures from my computer files taken from various camaras. the problem is that i can only import pictures from my files 1 at a time. what do i do ? is there a specific tutoral i need to watch ? I know i'm doing something wrong i just don't know, please help Kev
Welcome to the forum.
You should be able to use the Shift, or Ctrl modifier keys, to select multiple files, and Import them.
Now, for Stills, I would strongly suggest that you Scale those Still Images to about the Frame Size of the Project, prior to Import.
Good luck,

After installing Windows 8.1, I am no longer able to import pictures from SD card into Organizer as Elements simply stops working after Import from Card reader is selected. Obviously I am shutdown from importing pictures.
Windows 8.1 is not allowing Elements Organizer 11 to import pictures from SD Card in card reader into Elements Organizer. The Elements Program goes to a blue circle and the program times out.
I have:
Tried different SD cards
Tried different card readers,
I can import off files or folders. However card reader does not show up on this menu within Elements.
There is obviously some workaround that could be contemplated BUT Elements Organizer cannot import from SD card in card reader and this is a very inconvenient situation. It worked fine in Windows 8.0.
I would appreciate a reply. Thank you. -
How do i import pictures from my old iMac directly to my new iMac using iPhoto?
Hello! I have just got a new iMac and I am struggling with Migration Assistant to transfer data from my old iMac to the new one
I have tried to follow the standard procedure with firewire cable without luck
I am now desperately trying to find a smart way to import pictures stored in the old iPhoto (old iMac) to the new iPhoto in the new iMac
can anyone help??
Thanks a lot
Valentinathanks a lot for your tips, which unfortunately I am not able to follow as I currently stand
here is what happened, this morning when i started the new iMac I realized that i had in fact managed to complete the migration
upon start-up, the new iMac gave me the option to choose whether to log-in as the old Me (i.e. previous account in old iMac) or the new me
If choosing the old, I can access my old iPhoto and iTunes material
If I log-in as the new me, I am in the new iMac and do not know how to access neither iPhoto nor iTunes libraries
Question 1: Is there a way to access both libraries (iPhoto and iTunes) logging-in using the new credentials?
Eventually I would love to get rid of this double users accounts as I do not find it too convenient, I would rather consolidate the important data (i.e. pictures and music) in the new account
Question 2: Alternatively, if I were to follow the tip you gave me and forget about the migration altogether, can you help me locate the iPhoto library in the old iMac so that I can drag it as a single entity from the old Mac? could you also explain what I need to do to move it to the pictures folder of the new iMac?
Thanks so much for helping, pls consider me as a very basic Apple user, I appreciate you making it very easy for me to understand, do not give a lot of details for granted as I do not know a lot of stuff (for ex, I would not know where to start to "drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac")
hope you can help, make my day!

Why do imported pictures end up in an "Originals" folder I can't locate?
I am trying to import pictures to IPhoto from a CD. I am choosing "Import to Library" under "Files" on the IPhoto library menu, and then highlighting several folders on the CD. I click the message that says do not import (all) duplicates. The import occurs. But when I check, the vast majority of the photos I had intended to import are not in the "last imported" area. If I use my "Spotlight" to locate one of the images that didn't import by typing in the exact name of the image (number plus jpg extension) I get two listing of the photo that did not import. One is (as expected) on the CD. The other is in a folder called "Originals" in my IPhotos library. But when I scan the IPhotos library I cannot find a folder called Originals. In case it's relevant I should mention I have been using IPhotos Library manager, which has been useful. But in this particular instance, I am not using it--just trying a simple import into my IPhotos library. Thoughts?
All the best, DavidA few things
1 - Never go directly into the inside of the iPHoto library - there is no reason to and there are no user servicable pieces in it - only access your photos using iPhoto or the media browser - more details are available in the user tip on accessing your iPhoto files -
2 - a default "managed" library (the iPhoto preference to "copy imported items to the iPhoto library is in its checked state) is strongly recommended - a referenced library where that preference has been unchecked is not a good idea
3 - IPLM is not a photo manager - it is a library manager and is used to help manage iPHoto libraries - iPhoto is used to view, access and organize libraries
4 - what is the source o the photos on the CD? Camera? Scans? in events view try looking at the top and the very bottom of the events - depending on the source of the photos and their past history they could be anyplace - but that is a place to look -

When I am trying to import pictures from my iphone to PC, I get the message'No new pictures of videos were found on this device'. There are lots of pictures which i can see on the iphone. I have a 4S. Is there a way to get around that?
It sounds like you are using an application to import. You can do it manually.
Start > Computer (on the right) > scroll to the bottom and you will see your iPhone under Portable Devices > Open it and you will see a Drive, open that and there will be a DCIM folder. That is where your photos will be (There may be other folders each holding photos).
