Import Previews are very poor/pixelated ... D90 RAW

When I am importing my NEF files from my D90 with a card reader, my import previews are of a very poor image quality. Once the images are imported, previews look great.
Is there any way to improve the quality of import previews from the SD card?

Well Kevin, did you take look to the Aperture tutorials like this http://www.apple.com/de/aperture/tutorials/#organizeimport-importbasics ?
I am using a Nikon D100 and since few Weeks a D300 too and I do not have such trouble with the previews as you describe. Well, I do ever take a look to each image at full screen size and zoom it in to 100 % of size before I delete a photo. Thats can not be done in the simple preview window at import.
Yes, Adobe Lightroom has partly some advantages over Aperture, but what I ever saw and tried out with Lightroom - for me - only the printing capabilities are the one, of which Aperture has to pass.
I do have now over 15 thousend of photos in my Aperture library and do not want to switch over to Lightroom because of better printing features. If you like to switch over, do it - there is no reason to stay on with Aperture. Except you are using many of Apple Apps.
I use iMovie 09 and Final Cut Express for creating slide shows of my photos, more seldom I use iPhoto for this. I do a lot of lay out work with Pages, use iWeb for some of my sites and so on. Within all of them I use without any pain the photobrowser with photos from my Aperture library. That can not be done with Lightroom, for example.

    System Preference/Spotlight/Privacy
drag your disk into the list, excluding it temproraily from the indexing procedure.
Restart your mac, and open the Privacy page again, click the disk and the minus button to re-incorporate it into the procedure and restart the indexing.
Or just try your luck in Disk Utility/First Aid/Repair Disk Permission first.

  • Thumbnail images are very poor, is there a way to improve them ?

I've just started using Lightroom 5, and right after importing them I noticed the images are of very poor quality. If I try and blow them up bigger using the slider they get even worse.
I've used Bridge in Photoshop to do this before and the images look great, so I can quickly look at them and sort the good from the bad.
I can't do this in Lightroom with the quality of the image thumbnails. So how do you make the thumbnails better?
Also does the camera MP size determine what the thumbnails look like? In other words If I used an 8MP camera, would the thumbnails look as good as they would coming from a 20MP camera?

And what type of previews are you creating during import (in the Build Previews section of the File Handling panel of the import dialog)?

  • Quality of imported movies is very poor: SWITCHER FROM PC TO MAC NEEDS HELP

I find the quality of the video images imported from my JVC gz-mg575e to be very poor. If I play my movies directly of camera on TV I have a crystal clear image. After importing the movie in IMovie 08 the quality gets worse.
I already selected the ultrafine mode for the camera.
Is there something wrong with my setting of iMovie?
Or is it because I use iMovie08 instead of Final Cut Pro?

This is a PAL camcorder I think. Are you are selecting PAL as your setting when you import into iMovie?

  • Images on Robohelp are very poor quality/blurry or don't appear at all

    Hello,
Any help on this problem would be greatly appreciated as I have been attempting to solve this for several hours a day for the past week.
I have a simple employee handbook in word (about 20 pages with images) that I’m trying to turn into an html-based document. I've tried a couple if things in order to get this file into robohelp. I've linked the word document to RoboHelp and worked with that, and I've also imported the word doc into framemaker and then linke my framemaker document to Robohelp.
I’ve managed to create the html version with a table of contents doing it both ways, but there are a few images in the word document that turn out really bad in the html version. They look fine in the word document and in pdf version, but when I view them in RoboHelp or  in the html version of the document they’re very blurry and choppy. It almost looks as it pixels are missing. I’ve tried everything I could think of but nothing changes the quality of the image. As soon as I link the word document or framemaker document, when I click "view" on the specific image, or just view it from the handbook in Robohelp the image looks terrible.
Someone suggested that I checkmark "do not re-generate image" under project settings but now some of my images aren't appearing at all. All of my images are the same type but I've also tried changing it to png, or bmp, jpeg but nothing changes. They're either blurry or don't appear at all.
Thanks for any help or suggestions!

I don't know if this will help you, but I've had issues with poor image quality when importing Word documents into RH7. I see a fuzziness problem with most images--screen shot or not--but it seems really pronounced if the image in Word is reduced to less than 100%. To resolve this, I've opted to manually copy any Word images to another application (I use SnagIt), save them at 100% to PNG format (JPG and GIFs also work), and import the saved image files to Robohelp. That sounds like that's what you ended up doing with Photoshop.
Also, I wonder if it makes a difference how much the text was magnified/reduced when they took the original screen shots. I just did an experiment--using SnagIt, I took a screen capture of a block of text at 100% magnification. I then pasted the screen shot directly from SnagIt into my Robohelp document. It came in perfectly clean--couldn't see any obvious difference between the Robohelp text and the image of the Word text. I got the same results when I saved the screen capture to a PNG file and imported it that way. That leads me to believe the problem you're seeing is a result of having Word images automatically converted to RH.
(In the example--unfortunately hard to see-- the text in the red box is from a screen capture; the rest of the text was entered in RH8--there's no discernable difference in quality.)

  • PDFs in Mail and Preview are very slow

I have been experiencing serious issues with PDFs, handling them in Mail, and in Preview. This problem surfaced a few weeks ago, and it is totally hogging my resources. It is like the PDF takes over my computer. It might take several minutes to load, and it never fully loads. It will keep flashing back and forth as it tries to draw the whole document.
It seems especially problematic within graphic files, or those with shading or cross-hatching. As an Architect, I am handing files like that all the time. I bought my MBP Retina display a few weeks ago with the hopes that the 16 MB of RAM would make things run smoothly, but the only advantage is that restarts are pretty quick.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Basic Ring Tones on iPhone are Very Poor

As a business professional I am very pleased to pull out my iPhone and show it to other business associates. However, I am extremly dissapointed in the childish assortment of ridiculous ring tone options that are offered on this phone. I understand that a ringtone program was just released yesterday allowing you to create ring tones from iTunes music files.
I don't want my phone playing songs as ring tones while I am trying to conduct a professional business meeting. When will Apple PLEASE allow us to have simple digital phone style ring tones for use on this very fine business tool. I will gladly pay for these ringtones but please remember not all of us want songs for ring tones!!!
Listen to the phones in your offices or check out the ring tone from the phones on the TV show 24. We just want a clean digital sound option for the iPhone.
    HELP PLEASE,

...and your question for the support forum is what?

  • Preview working very poorly

Ugh.  Preview is driving me crazy.  Been this way for a while since upgrading to Mavericks (make that updating).  Cannot scroll through a PDF, and when I try and add notes on a post-it, the text on the screen is so slow that what appears is like 20 keystrokes behind what I am typing.
I'm looking at 10 to 20 MB PDFs, and need Preview to work for, well, work. Tried safe boot mode, repairing permissions, and more (I did notice that in user / library /  caches that I don't have any com.apple.preview folders, but not sure what this means).
This is driving me crazy…it seemingly doesn't get any more basic than looking at a PDF, and my machine has plenty of power…embarrassingly pulling my hair out frustrating.
Lots of looking online, and no magic bullet that I can find.

  • Poor Nikon D70s RAW conversion

    Hi,
Some RAW conversions from a Nikon D70s are very poor. A shot of pine trees and bare deciduous trees against blue sky shows 'green squares' artifacts at the tips of pine-needle clusters and in various places on the twigs of the bare trees. Also, there is a white halo around those twigs that are outlined against the sky.
It's the conversion, not the hardware, because Adobe Camera Raw doesn't show any of these artifacts.
Apple MUST get this part right if they want Aperture to succeed. I'm not even a pro photographer, but it's enough to make me hold off from using the software, at least for RAW.
(Of course, these artifacts also appear in all Apple RAW-handling products such as iPhoto and Preview.)

    Hi All,
Out of curiosity, I browsed Apple's example Tibet images to find one with nearground foliage, looked at it closely, and what do you know: same problems!
Look here and tell me you don't see it...
    http://web.njit.edu/~russell/D70s.html
Apple's images are from a Nikon D2X, so perhaps it's a problem specific to Nikons/NEF, rather than the D70s (or MY D70s) in particular.
I haven't noticed any issues with other colors, so most of the images look ok -- it seems to be problem with how certain types of green highlights are being scaled. But I take a lot of landscapes, so it's definitely a problem for me.

  • Very poor video quality after transcoding in Adobe Encore CS5.1

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!
I have very poor video quality after transcoding the video file (MPEG) in  Adobe Encore CS5.1. Below you see my used settings in my filmproject.
The problem exists after transcoding in Adobe Encore CS5.1. I checked all steps and found out that there is no problem until transcoding. My exported file  in MPEG has very good video and audio quality.
    Facts:
    1. Camcorder: Panasonic AG-AC160AEJ
Operating System : Windows 7, 64 Bit, Ultimate edition
    Source files: MTS files
    Recording settings (clip settings):
    Type: MPEG Movie
    Image Size: 1920 x 1080
    Frame Rate: 25,00
Source Audio Format: 48000 Hz - compressed - Stereo
Project Audio Format: 48000 Hz - 32 bit floating point - Stereo
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1,0
    2. Sequence settings in Premiere Pro
Sequence was created from Clip directly with settings above.
    3. Exporting settings in Adobe Premiere Pro:
Match sequence settings was activated. Now other changes were set.
    4. Exported File:
    Video
    Image Size: 1920 x 1080
    Data Transfer Rate: 25920 kBit / s
    Frame rate: 25
    Audio:
    Bit rate: 384 kBit / s
    Channels: 2 (stereo)
    Frequence: 48 kHz
    5. Transcoding settings in Adobe Encore:
I used different transcoding settings such as automatic DVD Transcoding, CBR and VBR.I also set “use maximum render quality”. But all results were always the same: very poor quality.
Why does the encore transcoding cause such bad video quality?
How can I solve this problem?
    Please help me soon.
    Best regards.

    Hi Ann,
    1) I did not only „Automatic (based on source)“ options in my tests, but also many other customized options.
The results are very poor. I have done a new test with the following settings. The result is also poor:
    Download link: http://www.klavierlehrer-bayern.de/download/test_mpeg2dvd_1.m2v
    Export Settings:
    Format: MPEG2-DVD
    Preset: Custom
Codec: MainConcept MPEG Video, Quality: 5
    Frame Rate: 25 fps
    Field Order: Upper
Pixel Aspect Ratio: Automatic (based on source)
    Render at Maximum Rate: [active]
    Bitrate Encoding: VBR, 2 pass
    Minimum Bitrate (Mbps): 5
    Target Bitrate (Mbps): 9
    Maximum Bitrate (Mbps): 9
    GOP Settings
    M Frames: 4
    N Frames: 12
    Use Maximum Render Quality: [active]
    Multiplexer: None
    2) Why shouldn’t I use the “Match Sequence Settings” in exporting? Because of the big output file size?
I used it and the results are very good as I expected:
    Download link: http://www.klavierlehrer-bayern.de/download/test_MatchSequenceSettings.mpeg
    Export Settings
    Match Sequence Settings [selected]
    1920 x 1080, 25 fps, Upper, Quality 50
    User Maximum Render Quality: [active]
    3) I tried also Dynamic Link in PremierePro (to Encore).
    The results are also poor.
    4) I will test also LagarithLoslessCodec and frameserving +DGMPGDec. But the video is vertical long drawn-ot.
I think I did not use it correctly.
    Regards

  • Iphoto picture quality suddenly very poor

Hi, I have recently solved a problem with your help in relation to Iphoto running very slow.
I now have another problem. Whilst I was installing the Leopard OS and the TC, I had a problem with the installation (now resoleved) but one of the apple techs (amongst other things) talked me through rebooting in safe mode. After I rebooted, the image quality of my photos seem to very poor when I enlarge them and are very poor when I run a slideshow. Also the photo I use for my wallpaper is also very poor - the pixilation seems to be not quite right.
Does anyone know how or why this has happened or can offer any help in resolving the problem?
    Thank you very much,
    Eileen

I too have poor image quality since i had a loss of power at the house while using Iphoto. All of my photos were gone from iphoto after reboot. I imported them from the back up file to recover them but since then the quality is terrible.

  • Downsample RED 4k footage to SD DVD - very poor results.

I want to make SD DVD from 4K RED footage.
I have tried different settings but the results are very poor.
Dynamic link from Premiere to Encore gives errors and I am running short of time to figure out reasons for this error.
I would rather use export - media adn then burn the resulting file into DVD using Encore.
    Using CS5 on Mac.
The footage is about 2 1/2 hours, at 24 fps.
The full length does not need to fit on 1 DVD - I can break it to fit into as many DVDs as needed.
Any pointers to optimum settings to get decent results for a downsample fo $K to SD, would be much appreciated.
    Thanks.
    RV

You didn't give any details on what your sequence settings are.  I'd suggest embedding (nesting) your existing sequence into a 24 fps SD sequence, and export that instead - then you can preview what it will look like, and get a feel for what the downscale quality will be beforehand.  That will probably also translate better over in terms of rendering - your output will be precomposed to an SD resolution as it comes over to Encore, which will be much less memory intensive (which may be why you're getting the encode failed error).

  • Online backups to Verizon service are very slow (25/25 service) - 1.5GB (113 files) @ over six hours

First, let me note that I had the Actiontec router replaced by tech right here, speed tests alone are great, PC was optimized.  I am using a wired connection.  However, uploads to the Verizon backup are very poor.  Not sure what to do next.

    Mojolo:
    You answered ytour OWN question.
Creating backups to the Internet are not advised.  There are many reasons that make this a poor idea from availability to security.  Take matters in your own hands and create local backups.
Personally, I write active data to a DVDRW weekly (rotated amongst 6 DVDRW discs) and monthly I use Ghost and image every hard disk of all my computers to an external hard disk.  It takes less than 15 minutes to backup ~4.5GB worth of data to DVDRW media.
Before Sandy hit, I moved the latest DVDRW backup and the external hard disk to an offsite location "inland" (just in case).

  • Very poor Random IO performance of 24 HDD Mirror-2 CSV on Win2012 R2 (Solved)

We already have a 2 separate Win2012 Mirror-2 Storage Clusters (in production) and had noted that performance was very poor.
We were looking to upgrade to Win2012R2 and storage tiering, we wanted to understand why the storage systems were performing so poorly.  So, we have not built out a new storage cluster, with 2 nodes, 3 JBODs and 24 x2TB Seagate ES2 SAS drives.
We have run IOMeter to measure IOPs and the numbers are very poor, regardless of the 'geometries' we choose.  Our Write IOPs results for 16KB block (this our typical DB page size) are:
    2 columns, 64KB Interleave = 1043
    2 columns, 256KB Interleave = 1176
    4 columns, 64KB Interleave = 1424
    4 columns, 256KB Interleave = 1688
    8 columns, 256KB Interleave = 1677
We only tested Write IO because this should be the slowest/worse case IOPs values.
We also tested each HDD individually and they range between 270 and 330 IOPs.
By our math, the IOPs values should be in the range of 3000-3600 == 24 HDDs x IOPs/HDD div by 2 [for mirror-2], but the tested are showing values which are barely 50% of this.
    Any assistance/tips would be appreciated.

16KB I/Os never touch the whole RAID stripe so that's why you see virtually never performance increase (I;m surprised you actually see any). Try using bigger request size to see would it make any difference. You need multiple workers and deep I/O queues.
What are you I/O Meter settings for test except write size?
