Import quality worse with Full rather than Large

I'm shooting on a Canon HG10 using HPX mode.
If I import using large, the quality is very good. If I use "full", then the quality is worse. A bit blurrier with thin horizontal lines (interlacing?).
Can anyone help please?

Really? You don't see the difference?
Ok, well here is it blown up to 2X to make it more obvious:
and here it is blown up to 2X and with the contrast increased to make it even more apparent:
I perhaps didn't pick the best frame as an example, but it is very obvious in motion. If necessary I suppose I could post a small movie clip to show.

  • ThreadReaper object used with finalizer rather than finalizer on Timer?

Timer class has threadReaper object used with finalizer rather than finalizer on Timer itself, can anyone explain the following snippet. what is the advantage of keeping the finalize in its references rathe rthan in the original object itself.
         * This object causes the timer's task execution thread to exit

  • Import quality issue with AVC/H.264 and workaround

When I import from my Sanyo Xacti HD700 using "Import from Camera..." the import quality has significant blocking / compression artifacts. However, if I copy the same file off the SD card from the camera and play it back in QTplayer it does not have this same blocking / compression artifacts.
The file is a .MP4 container using H.264 codec for video and AAC for audio. The resolution is 1280x720p and framerate 30fps.
After spending a significant portion of time messing around with iMovie 08 trying to get it to import without the quality loss I have discovered that "Import from Camera..." and "Import Movies..." have different behavior (in terms of video quality) on the SAME FILE.
    *To reproduce*:
    1) Record a video with Sanyo Xacti HD700 camera. (One with a nice color gradient is good because it will make the compression artifacts more obvious).
    2) Import the video from the camera using "Import from Camera..." (Name the event "Import from Camera" so you can remember which is which)
    3) Copy the .MP4 file from the mounted drive onto your local harddrive. (Not sure if this step is actually necessary, but haven't tried without)
    4) Import the video from the .MP4 on your desktop using "Import Movies..." (Name the event "Import Movies") Notice that this completes much quicker than step 2.
    5) Find the two imported movies in your "iMovie Events" folder. You will notice that both movies are different sizes when you would expect them to be identical. (In my case the movie from "Import from Camera" was 47.4MB while the movie from "import movies" was 33.1MB, and the file on the SD card was 33.1 MB)
    6) At this point you will also notice that the movie imported from camera will have a custom name like clip-2007-12-26 14;41;44.mov while the movie from "import movies" will have the same filename as it did on the camera i.e SANY0025.MP4.
    7) Now open both files in QTplayer and arrange them side by side showing the same frame. You will see that the quality is much worse in the file from "Import from Camera".
    Hypothesis:
My guess is that when you select "Import from Camera" it does some transcoding on these files that it doesn't do when you select "Import Movies". (Maybe Import from Camera always transcodes, whereas Import Movies checks to see if it needs to transcode or not?) I believe this because it takes significantly longer using the "Import from Camera" during which time it would appear to be performing some type of transformation on the movie. Also, because the file name in the folder is different.
I believe that either this transcoding is flawed or of poor quality which leads to the poor quality video when importing.
    *Work around*:
Use "Import Movies..." instead of "Import from Camera..."
Note that I have not yet taken this through the export process to know how this will impact the final output.
Finally, for the skeptics, here is a screengrab of the two movies side by side in QTplayer on the same frame. The one on the left was imported with "Import from Camera" and the one on the right with "Import Movies". Look at the right side of the yellow playset and also at the hair. In motion it looks quite bad.
    Thoughts?

Really? You don't see the difference?

  • How do I duplicate hard links when copying with Finder rather than making two copies of the file?

I have 1.6 TB of Video on one external drive. All of this was imported using iMovie and lives mostly in iMovie events. I then decided I wanted to use Final Cut Pro X for some additional flexibility.
I opened FCPx and imported the iMovie events and movies. As I expected, FCPx made hard links to the files in the iMovie events rather than wholesale copying the events into the original content area. I have found that it is much easier to keep all movie content on one disk rather than having is spread all over creation, so I am trying to make a copy on another larger drive.
I am trying to use Finder to copy the files rather than some other more obtrusive option using the actual applications. The problem is, when I use the finder Copy function, all files that had hard links in the file system are now phyiscally copied twice and are actually duplicated on the new disk. This doubles the size of the the content on the new disk and completely ruins the reason for moving the files in the first place.
Now that I have finally figured out what is going on, I guess I can figure out the proper Unix style commands in the Terminal to make happen what I expect, but I would much rather have Finder duplicate a link if it finds a link. I really want to be able to use iMovie or FCPx on the Event content and only have one copy of the content unless I want to make a modification in one or the other.

    Mark,
I have had a similar problem lately.  I use rsync to perform nightly backups from one internal drive to another.  I noticed (after I started using Final Cut Pro X) that my backup drive had 300G more disk space allocated.  It was only after a long and painful debugging process that I figured out that FCPX had created hard links to my iMovie Events.  I don't have a solution to this problem yet but I wanted to at least mention that I have run into the same challenge.

  • Can iWeb publish with JPEGS rather than PNG?

Is there any way to make iWeb use only jpegs rather than PNG files when publishing? Also, I think a picture quality slider would be helpfull for compression and site size management... thanks

You can minimize the chances of iWeb converting your jpgs into PNGs if you pay attention to the following things...
    1. Scale your jpgs to the resolution they are to be used...don't let iWeb do the scaling if possible (like dropping a photo in and then adjusting the size handles). Target your resolution and then drop the photo in and select "Use Original Size" in the Inspector Shape tab.
    2. Do not apply effects to your jpgs....if you do, iWeb will automatically convert to PNG and the file size will be even bigger! These effects include drop shadows, rotation, frames, opacity changes, etc.
    3. Be aware that in some templates, dropping a photo into iWeb automatically applies frames, drop shadows, and/or reflections. You can deselect these enhancements in the Inspector panel after dropping the photos in. If you don't, iWeb will convert to PNG.
    4. Do not use the "Use image as background" option. Better to drag an exactly sized jpg photo into iWeb and push it to the very back layer than to use this option.
You are right, iWeb or at least iPhoto needs to have some sort of user control over jpg compression. I use another app for this purpose called "Downsize". On the plus side, it also lets me apply shadows and frames to photos and saves the finished image with effects and all as a jpg.

  • Why full, rather than incremental, when re-starting TIme Machine

I had to stop Time Machine a couple of weeks ago, and remove the dedicated external drive. Yesterday, on reconnecting the drive and re-starting Time Machine it appeared to try to make a full backup (which I had to abort after two and a half hours) rather than the incremental I assumed it would make. Does this mean that each time one turns Time Machine off, it will make a full back up the next time it is restarted and an external drive connected? This seems to make irrelevant the backups already on the drive.

    V.K. wrote:
I'm not completely sure but I think if you don't do a TM backup for ten days TM gives you a warning that you haven't backed up in 10 days and if you ignore it, it erases TM history. this makes it start a new series of backups once you reconnect.
I use my G5 rarely, sometimes not for weeks and I have never had a TM warning about a "stale" backup. When I turn it on, it simply schedules the next backup, which is incremental, as always, and proceeds about an hour later.
I have never seen that "Ten Day" warning.
I think I have also let my other MBP sit unused for over 10 days and have never seen the warning.
However, I always start up these machines with the TM drive connected. Running them with the drive disconnected may be a completely different situation. In oher words, when I start these two rarely used computers, there is really nothing new to backup. That may be the difference. If you use the computer for 10 days or more with the TM drive disconnected that may cause the warning flag to be raised.

  • Opening two windows with "_blank" rather than one...

While setting up external links, I am finding that every time
I have the link open in a new (_blank) window, two windows will
open up with the same link rather than one. I guess two is better
than none, but does anyone know why this is happening? And also how
to fix the problem? I tried using _parent and it does the same
thing. I'm new at flash but understand the principles, though is
    there something I'm missing?

I know of no reason why that would happen other than having
the getURL, LoadVars or whatever being called twice - e.g once with
an onPress and then again with onRelease or something like that.
If you want someone to look at your relevant code, feel free
to post it here using the attach Code button (if you don't do it
this way then the formatting of your code can get messed up).

  • The latest version of Firefox has a compatability problem with the Reget download manger which means I can only download zipped files rather than large MOV or MKV files as could previously be done. Is there a solution to this issue?

As per above the Reget add on is now not compatible with Firefox's latest version. Is this something which Firefox is looking into? Is there a work around or is this up to Reget to remedy?

I have had a similar problem with my system. I just recently (within a week of this post) built a brand new desktop. I installed Windows 7 64-bit Home and had a clean install, no problems. Using IE downloaded an anti-virus program, and then, because it was the latest version, downloaded and installed Firefox 4.0. As I began to search the internet for other programs to install after about maybe 10-15 minutes my computer crashes. Blank screen (yet monitor was still receiving a signal from computer) and completely frozen (couldn't even change the caps and num lock on keyboard). I thought I perhaps forgot to reboot after an update so I did a manual reboot and it started up fine.
When ever I got on the internet (still using firefox) it would crash after anywhere between 5-15 minutes. Since I've had good experience with FF in the past I thought it must be either the drivers or a hardware problem. So in-between crashes I updated all the drivers. Still had the same problem. Took the computer to a friend who knows more about computers than I do, made sure all the drivers were updated, same problem. We thought that it might be a hardware problem (bad video card, chipset, overheating issues, etc.), but after my friend played around with my computer for a day he found that when he didn't start FF at all it worked fine, even after watching a movie, or going through a playlist on Youtube.
At the time of this posting I'm going to try to uninstall FF 4.0 and download and install FF 3.6.16 which is currently on my laptop and works like a dream. Hopefully that will do the trick, because I love using FF and would hate to have to switch to another browser. Hopefully Mozilla will work out the kinks with FF 4 so I can continue to use it.
I apologize for the lengthy post. Any feedback would be appreciated, but is not necessary. I will try and post back after I try FF 3.16.6.

  • IChat video quality better with .Mac subscriber than with AIM?

The quality of my video chats with one brother who also has a .Mac account is noticeably better than my chats with another brother, who uses iChat with an AIM account. I'm in the US, they are both in UK. All of us have almost identical iMacs. The one with the AIM account supposedly has a faster Internet connection. My question: is the video quality of iChat better if both users have .Mac accounts than if one has an AIM account?

The Screen names make no difference.
It is about a combination of Proccessor, Video card in iChat 4, internet Connection and settings and the amount of Bandwidth you get out of that connection.
As Defcom (UK) has said start with those basic Settings.
In iChat 3 and 2 the Quicktime setting when on Automatic is read as a 0 (zero) and this effectively Caps iChat.
In iChat 4 the Automatic setting is seen as 384k which is the MINIMUM for a 4 way chat.
As far as an Internet Connection goes this should be at Least 100k in both Up and Downloads.
Due to some data stream management to cut down on Peer-to-Peer file Sharing it pays to limit iChat in the Video Section Bandwidth Limit section to slip under the Radar as it were. There are two main ISP doing this Comcast and Road Runner in the States.
Verizon offer a FioS fibre service that is not that stable in speeds and jumps all over the place which is then too fast for iChat to keep up and that should use the cap in iChat Preferences as well.

  • I've bought an Apple USB drive, can I use this to load DVD's onto my computer so I only need to take the laptop on holiday with me rather than the USB drive and dvd's?

I've bought one of the Apple USB Superdrives thinking I could use it to load DVD's and save them onto my macbook pro, can anyone confirm if I can or can't do this?
If I can how do I do it?

Ok so any chance you could explain to me exactly what I need to do as I am absolutely clueless! I have a pile of DVD's, the USB superdrive and I've just downloaded the Handbrake software. When I put the DVD into the superdrive it starts playing, how do I get the series onto my computer?
If you haven't done this before, there are a few things you need to know. Sorry to say that this is not yet a simple, straightforward process like it is for music CDs. It helps to be a little geeky. You will need to make some choice about file format and file size if there is any chance that the imported discs will take up more space than you have available on your hard drive. If you are willing to learn, you should read the Handbrake User Guide and other articles on the Web about importing DVDs.
If you think this is starting to look complicated and you don't have time to figure it out before the trip, it might be easier to just bring the discs.
I have found that Handbrake can't import every disc. I think Mac DVD Ripper Pro is a much easier program to use, and it will import almost any DVD pretty reliably, but it costs money. For me it is worth it.
No matter which way you do it, it is going to take a lot of time to import a bunch of discs. It is going to take a lot more time than importing music CDs.

  • Transfer file to iPhone with wire rather than use iTunes match

Hi, I have iTunes match. I create DJ mixes and my own tunes so every time I want to put them on phone I have to currently:
    1. Save them to itunes
    2. Upload them to iTunes match (which takes around 43 days)
    3. Wait another 3 weeks
    4. Download them to iphone
Now this process has slowly started to irritate the absolute sh!tters out of me especially when on my old android phone I just plugged it in and dragged them over - thus 200MB file done in less than a minute - compared to around 67 days using iPhone.
Do I have to just turn off iTunes Match and never ever user it again? I suppose I could do this but I do quite like the facility to download any track at any time so WHY CANT I JUST F%%$KIN DRAG MY MUSIC ACROSSS FFS.
Any help would be much appreciated, thanks

It's ok I've [sort of] solved this, it's a bit long winded which is what I expect nowadays from Apple but at least it doesn't allow anyone to access their iPhone filesystem - god forbid.
Basically you have to turn off iTunes match on iphone, plug in iPhone - you may have to 'set up as new iPhone' which scared me a bit as it isn't new - I 've just never plugged it in... anyway it will then start 'syncing' which scared the sh1t out of me, but it seemed to be ok. Then you can drag files from iTunes into your iPhone viola!
I'm beginning to think iTunes Match is probably great for someone that buys all their music from iTunes and only ever listens to individual tracks/albums, but for me when I mainly listen to 2-3 hour long mixes, none of which are obviously in apples matching library - the upload speeds are just too slow.
Still, the frustration is in the v poor iTunes interface - the fact that the progress bar gives no actual indication where it's up to or what it's doing. And another thing is when you try and import an unrecognised file format such as FLAC or AVI. OK this is frustrating in itself but ignoring the fact you can't, YOU JUST DONT GET ANY ERROR MESSAGE - NOTHING, it doesn't say sorry it can't import the file, iTunes doesn't support it. It just does NOTHING - so the obvious assumption is that it HAS ACTUALLY IMPORTED IT. And then when you go to play/view said file sometimes ages after you realise that it didn't actually import.
These user interface errors I learned to avoid whilst writing computer programs in GCSE computing when I was 15 years old. So maybe Apple need to hire some new developers it's shocking.
    RANT OVER.

  • How do I make Iphone proritise answering with bluetooth rather than ringing on phone?.

Previously, when I received a phone call in my car, the bluetooth radio would ring and then I would take the call by pushing button on steering wheel. Ever since installing latest IOS the bluetooth device connects but the phone just vibrates (doesn't even ring) The radio shuts off but the audio ring does not sound. Have to answer the phone manually. Defeats the purpose of having handsfree!! I note that when I phone voicemail while in car the screen shows options to use bluetooth, Iphone or speaker phone. When I am in the car I JUST want to use handsfree bluetooth (it is the LAW!!). Is this just a glitch in the new operating system update? and if so, when will it be repaired?

You can't. If iPhoto is open when you connect the phone then it will offer itself from importing.

  • Import Folder by Current Date Rather Than Date Shot?

Does anyone know if it is possible to request on Import for LR to put images into folder created on the day you download as opposed to the date the photos were taken? Aperture and Photo Mechanic allow this but I can't seem to find this specific ability in LR. I hope it is there.

    Unfortunately, you can't.
The best you can do is, select the "Into single folder" option on Import and enter the name of the folder manually.
