Import RAW without JPEG?

My camera makes sidecar jpegs that are about 4 MB each. I don't want these crappy JPEGs taking up room on my HD. How can I get Aperture to import only the RAW files? Thanks in advance for advice!

Place this one in user/Library/Services - then it will be available in the service menu in Snow Leopard when your in Finder. Just select all the image files, don't worry about the JPG, the action will ignore them.

    If I try to import both RAW and JPEG from the same folder or from the same card LR only imports the RAW files. I usually shoot RAW and JPEG simutaneously so they both have the same filename but different file types. Photshop handles this OK so whats going on?

    It would probably have been better to start a new thread, rather than attaching your new question on the end of a 3 year-old thread, but anyway, by JEP do you mean JPG?  Where are you seeing JEP/JPG?  The RAW files from your camera won't say .RAW as the extension, but .CRW or .CR2 if Canon RAW and .NEF if Nikon RAW, and perhaps some other extension for a different manufacturer.
    As far as shot-specific information: shutter-speed, aperture, ISO and focal-length are shown several different places such as under the histogram, in the metadata panel in Library mode, and in the Info Overlay in Loupe view in Library and Develop modes.  You can define what specific things you want to display in the limited area using View / View Options.  You can use the I key to cycle between nothing, Loupe Info 1 and Loupe Info 2.
    For learning photography, shutter, aperture, ISO and focal-length are mostly what you'd need, along with white-balance color-temperature which is visible in Develop mode.  Some camera-manufacturer-specific programs can also show things like which focus-points were enabled, but Lightroom works with many, many cameras from various manufacturers and things like focus-points are recorded differently from each manufacturer so LR doesn't attempt to decode and show such less-standardized information.
    If you really want to see ALL the information encoded in an image--the EXIF data, then download EXIFtool and drag-and-drop an image to the EXE that has (-k) in the name and you'll see a very long list of information, most of it irrelevant to general photography and, again, different for different cameras, where LR is trying to show things that are common to all cameras.

  • Iphoto 11-File import RAW and JPEG

    iPhoto 11, Snow Leopard 10.6.7 RAW supported and Sony DSLR A300 supported...
    My question is simple: I understand (i think) that when I import pictures into iPhoto that they will be converted to JPEG. I have a number of JPEG files. But if I shoot something in RAW (.arw) and import it, does iPhoto 11 import the RAW image AND make a JPEG or does it just take the RAW photo and NOT convert to JPEG?

    iPhoto imports RAW files from compatible cameras and stores the RAW files in it's library.
    It creates JPEG refrence files for viewing on screen to speed up performance which is also stored in the library.
    If you edit an image, the edits are made on a JPEG copy that iPhoto creates (you can also have it save them as .tiff which is mentioned in the link above) and stores it in it's library.

  • Importing raw and jpeg pictures in elements 11

    Question on photoshop Elements 11? I shoot in raw and jpeg format. I rename photos of the days shoot with that days date for all photos. This creates renamed files with the same date and the numbers in sequence in paranthesis. Example 1130-2013 (1), 1130-2013 (2) etc. The photos have the same name for the raw as well as the jpeg file. However, when I import these photos into elements 11 the raw files do not have the same image as its corresponding jpeg file  ( but both use the same file name example ( 1130-2013 (1) for the jpeg and 1130-2013 (1) for the raw file --but the pictures are not the same. Help me find out what is wrong me or the program??

    I needed to test, as I almost never shoot in anything but RAW. When shot a couple of photos with my D300 in RAW+JPEG, and imported with a setting of Both (Separate Masters), the JPEG is on the left and the RAW on the right. Please review your settings in this regard, particularly in view of your other topic about not recognizing duplicates, as that makes be wonder if these two observations are related?

  • Importing Raw and Jpeg file formats to Mac Pro

    Since migrating to Photos from iPhotos when importing photos only Jpegs seem to get imported, not Raw files when shot in both formats on my NikonD5300. Does anyone know how i can import the two file formats simultaneously? (I have double checked the settings on my camera!)

    Photos will import both the RAW and the JPEG, but stack them and use only one of them as the original file.
    You will see badge overlays "J" or "R", indicating if the RAW or the JPEG is currently uses as the original file to render edits.
    Open the photo in "EDIT" mode, then you will be able to switch to the "RAW" version as the original file, in the "Image" menu.  The options "Use RAW as original" or "Use JPEG as original" are only available in Edit mode, also "Reprocess RAW"

  • Importing RAW and JPEG

    Hello,
    I shoot RAW and JPEG at the same time. Previously when I have imported the files using import "both with separate masters" the JPEG file would be on the left and the RAW file would be on the right, so when I stacked the photos and closed the stacks the JPEG would be visible and the RAW file would be stacked underneath.
    Recently my imports have been the other way around with the RAW file on the left and the JPEG on the right. I understand I can promote and demote photos in a stack but this takes a long time with lots of photos imported at once.
    Is there a way to have the JPEG file placed to the left of the RAW file during importing?
    I have imported before using the same camera with JPEG on the left.

  • How to import RAW and JPEG, but see only one image?

    This is driving me crazy.
    I shoot sometimes RAW and sometimes JPEG on the same memory card. So some pictures have only a JPEG file, others (the ones I shot in RAW) have a RAW+JPEG pair (or at least, Aperture sees it that way when displaying the content of the memory card).
    What I want:
    - import only once
    - for JPEG files, JPEG is imported as master
    - for RAW files, RAW only is imported as master
    There seems to be no combination of the import settings that lets me do this?!?!?!?
    If, under the "RAW+JPEG Pairs" settings I select "RAW files only", all JPEG files DISAPPEAR from the import list. WHY? This setting should be for "RAW+JPEG Pairs" only, it should not affect images that only have a JPEG file. I want to import JPEG files as well, so I select "Both (RAW as master)". Now, in the imported project there are TWO images to deal with, which is not what I want.
    Even if I were to import twice, how can I exclude the duplicates?

    Please ignore my post. Aperture behaves correctly. I got confused because many pics look alike, but aren't really the same pic. Sorry for the confusion.

  • Import raw and JPEG and switch between them

    Some background. The Epson R-D1 (and R-D1s) when set to B&W and asked to record raw + JPGs renders the JPG in B&W and leaves the raw alone. It also shows you the images in B&W on its LCD. This is great because, if you don't want to, you never have to see the images in colour.
    When importing the images into Lightroom 2.0, the help has this to say: "To import duplicate JPEG files and raw files separately, select the Treat JPEG Files Next To Raw Files As Separate Photos option. Deselect this option to import only a single file." So does that mean that you can only have the raw images, which are shown in colour, or both images individually? It would be great if Lightroom knew that the two files represented the same image and let you pick which to work with, but I can't tell whether this is currently possible.

    Thanks--the stacking approach seems to mostly work OK; not sure why I didn't think of it. IA problem though is that setting the slider for the time between shots to zero doesn't actually group shots having the same capture time--it seems to group nothing! Kind of pointless. You thus have to set the minimum time to 1s, which can put too many photos in a stack if you've been blazing away. I think I'd consider this a bug.

    I've been trying to import my raw images along with the jpeg copies and when i select the images and import it only seems to import the nefs. If i select only the nef and or jpegs they will import. Is there a setting that i should change so that LR imports both?

    This is the way Lr works. It treats the Jpgs as the Preview images.

  • Importing Raw and JPEG from Canon 5D

    My Canon 5D is set to save images as large JPEGs and Raw files. Aperture will only show thumbnails of, and import only the RAWs. Is this normal? I don't see a preference selection to allow importing all images.

  • Importing Raw and Jpeg from Leica D-Lux 4

    Hi All,
    If Apple ever address the D-Lux 4 issue then I will be a happy man. However, for the meantime i need to find a work around solution for importing my images into Aperture. I shoot Dynamic B&W Jpeg with Raw back-up for archive and (hopefully) later editing. The issue I have at the moment is that Aperture is only showing the preview of the Raw file and not the Jpeg aswell, thus I have to drag the images from the card as a batch of jpegs and then again a batch of Raw files separately into the project that I have created. Does anyone know the reason for this and if there is a more elegant solution?

    I don't have an answer for you except to say I am a fellow sufferer...same problem here.
    The D-LUX 4 has become my personal favorite camera, and is with me at all times. I am really sad that Aperture has not supported this great tool. I use it more than any of my pro cameras, because it is convenient, and great quality.
    I use it professionally to scout shooting locations, and in a 24 page brochure that we did last month 2 of the images came from the D-LUX 4....amazing given the rest of the 48 images came from Nikon D3s or my P45+ back on a Hasselblad.
    Apple please support the Leica D-LUX 4...it seem everyone else is, even shareware.

  • Importing Raw Jpeg Pairs with Jpeg as Master

    I give....I imported raw and jpeg as pairs since aperture updated for the D7000. I see the J on the badge. I assume they are stacked. I see where i can change the master to the raw file by right clicking. However, can't i just navigate to the raw file for adjustments or do I have to switch the master? I have looked at the manual. I have a book on aperture, I searched the board. I gotta be missing something really basic! Please help this stupid newbie. Is it better to import both as masters in the future? What do people prefer? tx

    Hi Sheryl,
    No, you aren't missing anything really basic. The RAW and JPG aren't really stacked. They are associated together in a different way that is only applicable for pulling JPG and RAW versions of the same photo out of your camera together.
    If you can answer the following question, it might help the other users (and mybe you) help you.
    Why is it a problem to have your RAW be the master?
    With your hesitation to switch the master to the RAW, you imply to me that you would like Aperture to work with your JPG files, but at the same time it your question implies that you would like you want to work on your RAW file.
    In my own preference, I struggled with what to start out with, RAW or JPG. I came to the conclusion that I didn't want to spend the time comparing RAW and JPG from my camera and deciding what to do. I no longer capture RAW+JPG in my camera.
    Basically, post-processing the RAW file through Aperture gives you lots more information to work with, as the creation of a JPG in your camera throws out lots of colors and pixels. So, I had to balance things, why would I choose to take a "throwaway snapshot" with RAW if I knew it probably wouldn't be worth post-processing? For instance, all the pictures of my niece at the dinnertable in really bad light. I can't do anything worthwhile in post-processing with the sharp shadows, and the 5 different and ugly light sources, and the fact that she only looked at the camera once. Yeah, I can make it a little better, but not enough that it's worth post-processing to me. So, for those pictures, I just let my camera do the work and use the most basic, point-and-shoot settings most of the time. My camera produces JPG-only in the basic settings.
    On the other hand, for those sunsets, gardens, forests, streams, vistas, etc, I probably would like to do a little post-processing if my exposure wasn't right to begin with. I decided that I would just let Aperture decode the RAW file for me and forget about the JPGs entirely. When I'm using my camera in manual mode (or one of the quasi-manual modes) I shoot in RAW only. Yes, my camera will do a better job rendering a JPG than Aperture will, but Aperture's very good and I figure I wouldn't be looking at the JPG from the camera if I'm doing other post-processing in Aperture.
    That being said, there are many other opinions and othe reasons to choose one way or the other.

    It will depend at lot on the camera (possibly lens) and how much you like the JPEG rendering it delivers.
    There are lots of thing to consider and the link Allan provided is a good background for understanding the different implications. But the landscape is changing and there are some areas that are perhaps a good subject for further discussion.
    In general terms, there are three areas where raw may be the only way to salvage an image that was captured poorly:
    Bad Exposure
    Poor Choice of white balance
    Excessive Noise Reduction
    If your image suffers from any (or all) of these, then the JPEG is probably ruined and can't be recovered (although it may be made usable at lower resolutions). So if you or your camera are prone to producing images like these, raw is a safety net that can save your images.
    Excessive noise reduction (which destroys detail) was the main reason I started using raw, as some premium compacts always threw away too much detail, even at their lowest noise reduction settings. Exposure and White balance were under my control, but not the noise reduction.
    But in recent years, the JPEG processing of many cameras have improved enormously and it is creating a bit of a dilemma.
    Sensor efficiency has led to lower noise, and camera JPEG engines (CJEs) have become more sophistocated, delivering excellent results straight out of camera.
    With lower noise has come improved dynamic range, and CJEs have introduced dynamic range  optimisation to allow more of the shadow and highlight data into the final image using custom tone curves for different scenes.
    Colour procsessing is continually being tweaked with many cameras (Fuji and Olympus in particular have a very strong signature look that many people enjoy want to preserve).
    For some users with good computer knowledge and image processing skills, there is still a motivation to use raw as they are able to use the tools to get the very best out of their images and produce superior renderings. Although even among these, I know of quite a few who admitted they were struggling to produce renderings from Fuji X100 raws that were as good as those from Fuji's CJE.
    But for many people, being sat in front of the computer tweaking their images, and being expected to learn the tools and techniques to do so, is just not their idea of what photography is about. So these improved CJEs are offering them real benefits to get on with shooting, and use the computer primarily for organisation and publishing, with perhaps some of the more simple editing; crop, straighten, etc.
    But in the last year or two, in some areas the CJEs havent just been catching up, they're actually moving ahead, at least over third party converters like Aperture, Lightroom, C1 etc (the manufactures own raw processing software should always be able to match and beat the CJE).
    Most of these areas can be grouped under the heading "Lens based Optimisations". From automated removal of distortion, CA, vignetting and moire, to the new sophistocated sharpening algorithms that are based on the manufacturers actual lens performance data to apply exactly the right kind and amount of sharpening to each part of the image based on the lens used and the aperture setting.
    Even if the converters provide all the tools to compete with this level of sophistocation, unless it can be fully automated, it still could become a case of more effort for less accurate results.
    For my own workflow, I have recent found combinations of camera settings that deliver very pleasing out of camera JPEGs and so have begun shooting Raw + JPEG, importing both to Aperture with JPEG set as the master. This means many of my images are now near 'publish-ready' immediately on import, but for any images where I messed something up, or just don't like the JPEG results, I've still got the raw to fall back on.

  • Adjustments when using RAW and Jpeg

    Up to recently, I've imported RAWs and Jpegs separately but have just started using the RAW and Jpeg import function.  Irrespective of which I've set as a master, I find that if I make adjustments to one, when I switch to the other, the same adjustments have been applied.  Obviously, adjustments to RAW are not necessarily the same adjustments I want to make to a Jpeg and vice-versa.
    Is there any way I can set Aperture 3 to only make (say) adjustments to the RAW file so that when I switch to Jpeg I still have the original file to work on?  Or do I need to go back to importing as separate masters?

  • How to have iPad (iOS 5) import only the JPEG from a RAW JPEG pair?

    I have an iPad 2 16 GB, running iOS 5. I also have a Canon EOS 7D. I purchased a CF Card Reader for the iPad (see http://store.micgadget.com/card-readers/280-ipad-2-cf-card-camera-connection-kit .html) so that I can view and edit photos quickly in the field, without having to lug my laptop around. To make this easier, I set my camera to shoot RAW+JPEG. I shoot with the smallest JPEG files possible, still a relatively large for the iPad 2,592x1,728, with the idea that I'd only import the JPEG files to the iPad, but still have the RAW files to work with when I get back to my computer. This works great with one exception: the iPad doesn't allow me to import only the JPEG files, but grabs the RAW files along with them. As you can imagine, this fills up my iPad rather quickly, and takes quite a bit longer to import than if it only grabbed the JPEGs.
    So here is my question: How do I have my iPad import only the JPEGs from the RAW+JPEG pairs on the memory card?
    One workaround that helps slightly. If I connect my iPad to my computer after the import, I can go in via Image Capture, select all the RAW images and delete them, leaving the JPEGs behind. This is an underwhelming solution, but does save space after the fact.

    What you are seeing is how Safari works now in iOS 5. There is no way to get that icon in Safari now. There other much better browsers available in the App Store. Look at iCab Mobile, Mercury, Atomic, ....
    I have been running iOS 5x for so long now, that I don't even remember if that icon did appear in earlier iOS versions
