Import // rename photos

does anybody know
how can I replace about 2000 photos in indesign without having to import and rename the photos?
for example if I have 4 photos in a document, named A,B,C,D located in a folder named X
and I want to replace them with 4 different photos, named E,F,G,H located in a folder named Y , is there a possible way to do it automatically instead of manually?

I got that.. is just an endless procedure to re-link each image...as well as rebuilding from scratch (with bridge contact sheet)
I cannot rename the images because they belong to specific libraries and they ought to have the specific names however
your second suggestion "export the file to a .inx file and open the file in a text editor, like notepad or something, and then find the reference to a.tiff and replace it with b.tiff.", might be faster because I already have txt files listing the images. SO the replacement in a notepad of a.tiff to b.tiff its more than easy.
if I do  that what could you please tell me what is the next step in order for my initial .indd file to take the information from .inx file?

You basically have to tell indesign what image you want to link to. If you say that you want to link to a.tiff and then you want to change the image to b.tiff you have to Relink the image. As all indesign sees is a path to the file, i.e., c:\mydocuments\eugene\images\a.tiff
InDesign has no way of reading your mind and inserting the b.tiff instead.
The only other way to do it is to rename b.tiff to be a.tiff
Or if you export the file to a .inx file and open the file in a text editor, like notepad or something, and then find the reference to a.tiff and replace it with b.tiff.
But you don't want to do that.
What I'd do is load up my cursor with all the images I wanted to place and go to each image and just click on it to insert the new image.
or
I'd select the images in the links panel (Window>Links) and choose Relink, and then when prompted to relink A.tiff I'd choose b.tiff, and when prompted for the next image I'd select the new image I wanted to place.
But InDesign won't be able to read your mind, you have to tell it what image you want to replace the other image.

  • Import and rename photos via Automator and ExifTool

    Hiya,
Just finished my work on a Automator workflow in order to import and rename photos from a portable hard disk.
I had the problem that my portable hard disk (with integrated card-reader) was not recognised by Image Capture or Aperture. Therefore I couldn't import my photos straight away into Aperture.
Another problem I had was that Aperture doesn't rename photos while importing. Whereas other Automator actions offer this feature, they all didn't fulfill my requirements - yeah, I can be very fussy
That's why I started initially to write a Perl script based on ExifTool in order to copy and rename photos to my liking. Once this was done and very much in use, I started to put it into an Automator action with a little AppleScript around it.
Eventually, I initiated the entire Automator workflow with the Check For Disk action.
More information and the files needed can be found on my website http://photography.stephanjaeger.eu/2007/03/improve-your-digital-photography-wor kflow.html.
The only drawback of this script is that only one camera is supported. At the moment, I work on a solution to support several cameras.
The Perl script can used by itself, if you feel comfortable in using the Terminal.
I hope you find the information and the Automator action helpful.
    Any feedback appreciated.

    Brian,
Thanks for giving it a try. Let me know how you get on!
If you have any problems, please don't hesitate to contact me.
By the way, you don't have to use an external hard disk. You could replace easily the first step in that workflow with an other action, such as defining a folder that should be monitored, or selecting manually a folder that contains photos.
I hope that I find some time over the week-end to make some changes to the script. I will set up as well a page on my web site with more details.
    All the best,
    Stephan

  • Problem when importing two photo galleries with the same name. Please Help!

    Hi Guys,
I'm not a pro in dreamweaver so I would appreciate if your answer wouldn't be too technical...
Anyway I have experienced a problem. Heres the sotory, I have been making a websie in DW and used Adobe Bridge CS5 to create a photo gallery SWF file that I would use for my website. The problem is that I want to use two different photo galleries on two different pages however when I save my second photo gallery in bridge, it saves every file with the exact name as the first photo gallery I created and is working fine... Thus when I try to import the photo gallery files into my website folder structure, I find that it asks me to rename them because the files from the first photo gallery are called the exact same names.. Now obviously when I try to rename them dreamweaver gets confused and goes to the wrong folder and uses the images from my first photo gallery in the second one.
So I guess my question is how can I organize my folder structure to be able to import multiple galleries without dreamweaver getting confused because bridge names all the files the same. Or how could I save the files through bridge so that they have different names and will work fine when I import into DW...
Thanks and sorry for the essay,
    Patrick

#1 You cannot have two files / folders or galleries with the same name.  Redo your image Galleries with different names.
#2 SWF (flash) is not visible to iPhone, iPad, iTouch, Android or other web devices that don't support Flash Player.  These users will see nothing.  You might wish to explore other photo gallery / slideshow options that rely on jQuery instead of Flash technology.  Some links below.  A Google search will reveal many others.

  • Why can I no longer import EDITED photo from my iPad to my Mac using Image Capture from Snapseed app?

Why can I no longer import EDITED photo from my iPad to my Mac using Image Capture? This is farcical and a real problem having to email them individually to myself and is totally inefficient time wise compared to previously using image capture! Why change this when it was working well and very quickly until the latest change. Now I have to move files from downloads into an appropriate folder, after emailing each individual edited image to myself, then I have to open in Photoshop and rename the file. This is ludicrous and takes forever to do!

Thank you! I suppected it would be in the settings somewhere. I' ve much to learn...get myself into trouble pushing buttons I don't really understand.

There has been a change in where Firefox searches for plugins and the plugins folder in the Firefox program folder is no longer scanned for plugins, so Firefox won't find them anymore if they are installed in the plugins folder instead of the "browser\plugins" folder that Firefox now scans.
You can set the plugins.load_appdir_plugins pref to true on the about:config page to make Firefox scan the "<install>/plugins/" directory for plugins like the WMP plugin (np-mswmp.dll).
You can alternatively move plugins from "<install directory>\plugins\" to "<install directory>\browser\plugins\" (create this folder when missing) to make Firefox find them again.

  • Import rename index not working

I recently purchased a Nikon D3100, my first camera to shoot in RAW.
Being a basic photographer, I wanted to use both jpeg+raw until I am more familiar with Raw.
I started out importing jpeg+raw pairs with jpg as master into Aperture until I discovered that you can't delete the raw files from the pairs at a later time for images that are just ok to save space.
I used the rename feature during import to rename the photos to
    imagedate_eventname_index
    This worked fine.
I switched to import both jpeg and raw as seperate masters using the same naming convention.
Now the index does not append to the end of the name. Just date and event name.
Is anyone else seeing this issue?
    Is there a work around?
    Regards,
    Brett

Sorry, didn't see the question at the end.
    I am using Aperture 3.2.3
    I am using Lion 10.7.3
Were you able to make any progress?
The issue still happens if I only import JPGs on cards with both JPG and RAW images.
Cards with only JPGs works fine.
My situation is I have a new camera that takes jpg+raw.
I have taken a lot of pictures and want to import them into Aperture as pairs.
That worked fine with renaming, but I only want to keep the RAW for certain photos (maybe 10%) and Aperture will not let me remove the RAW images that are paired.
So I read where you can import seperate jpg and raw and use the stacks 2 seconds feature to keep the jpg and raw together. Now I can delete the RAW for the not so good photos.
However, this rename issue is now causing a glitch in my process.
If Aperture would let me break a JPG+RAW pair to remove the RAW or JPG, then this would not be an issue.
Maybe I should better describe what my end goal is (assuming Apple does not add the remove one image from a pair feature).
    Goal:
SD Card with JPG and RAW images
Import both JPG and RAW with the same name and each pair with a different numbered suffix
    ie
    2011-12-01_OfficeParty1.jpg
    2011-12-01_OfficeParty1.nef
    2011-12-01_OfficeParty2.jpg
    2011-12-01_OfficeParty2.nef
Use auto stack to stack images with 2 seconds setting to stack the jpg and RAW images together.
(If I take multiple pictures within 2 seconds, the stack will have more than 1 image pair but that doesn't happen often and easy to seperate)
Now I can go through and remove the RAW images on the photos that I will never need them.
Ultimately, I would like the JPG and RAW to have the same filename, except the extension, to keep them identified as pairs.
I will probably go back to using image capture and exifrenamer to achieve the naming I want before importing the photos into Aperture.
    Regards,
    Brett

  • Importing new Photo events from iPad to iPhoto '11

    Hi,
I've recently bought the iPad Camera Connection Kit and I used it to import some photos from my camera: this process ended up creating a new event named with the date of the import (I haven't found a way to rename it so far) and an album called "Last import".
I thought that the new event would have been transferred to iPhoto '11 during the next sync with my MacBook. However I found out that's not so: I tried syncing my iPad both via wifi and USB, but the new event doesn't show up in iPhoto '11.
What should I do? Even clicking on "iPad", in iPhoto '11, it shows me only the photos that are in the camera roll...

thank you very much for helping me!
I eventually found out the solution to my problem: however I think it's really non-userfriendly and complicated.
I'll explain everything so that it can be useful for others who are in the same situation as me: I eventually found out that in iPhoto (on the Mac) you see all the photos in your iPad Camera Roll plus all the photos you've imported via the Camera Connection Kit (but they are all mixed up, not divided into albums/folders/whatever...). So if you want to import to iPhoto on your Mac the new photos that are on the iPad you have to manually select them in iPhoto an click on "Import selected...". Then you can rename the event and do whatever you want.
But that's nat all: when you re-sync your iPad iTunes "detects" a new event in iPhoto so it is automatically transferred into the iPad......so you end up by having (on the iPad) two events that contain the same identical photos: the one created automatically when the photos where imported through the Kit and another one imported during the sync process. In order to delete the first one you have to go to Albums and tap on "Last Import", than you have to manually select all the photos and finally delete them: in this way the event "magically" disappears.
I don't know if I've been clear enough but, as the whole process i so complicated, I think there's no other way to explain it.
However I'm very disappointed and in my opinion this is a really frustrating thing that Apple should fix asap!!

  • Can't Import Referenced Photos

I have a lot of older photos on an external drive I want to import.  All are jpegs in files grouped by year, i.e. 2004, etc.  I initially imported them but by accident pointed to my back up files on another drive.  I deleted the Aperature folder, i.e. 2004 and did the import a 2nd time.  When done it says imported 0 photos.  I did this for 2 years.  The other years I import work just fine, its the two imports that I deleted that have a problem.  I suspect there is something not cleaned up in the Aperature DB that is not cleaned up from the delete.  I could rename the year I am having a problem with to say 2007a but and see what happens...  How can I fix the problem

Are you saying that you went into the Aperture library bundle and deleted folders? Do you have a backup?
Try running the steps in the Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics, repait library and if that doesn't work try a rebuild.
Post back if that doesn't help. But seriously if you have a backup that will be the easiest way to resolve this.
    Good luck

  • Simultaneously rename photos in LR and on disk

Hi...just purchased and started using LR today so I am a total newbie. The reference book I purchased states that renaming photos in LR also renames the image files on disk. However, so far, LR has not renamed the photos on the disk...what am I doing wrong? Obviously, I'd like the file names be consistent between LR and the source...Thank you!!!

I was importing images from an external hard drive and upon import, was inadvertently copying them to a location on my C drive. So when I renamed my files, the names were modified on default backup location on the C drive as opposed to the external source disk. Not sure why the images wouldn't be renamed on the actual source disk from where the images were imported, but there it is....

  • Can I rename photos in Aperture?

Can I rename photos after they are in Aperture?  The only thing I can find indicates renaming them during import only.

If by photos you are referring to the masters then you can rename them but it is not the most convenient thing.
You need to use Metatdata->Batch Change
Then set the version name and check the Apply to Master Files box. The name will be applied to the version selected and to it's master file.

  • Importing edited photos from iphotos to typepad

    Hi
I'm a complete Mac newbie, currently with growing pains as I move from Linux & Windows to Mac...
Using an ipod to take pics for my web site. Before getting my mac, I used to update them in photoshop, edit them for size & quality, and import the saved edited file from my PC to the typepad-hosted web site.
Now, I plug my ipod into my new mac, import the photos into iphoto and crop, touch-up colors for the photos etc using iphoto. When trying to import the edited photo into typepad, I select my photo from a list of files under Media -> Photos. The thumbnail photo shows up as the edited version - ok, that's what i want. So I import it into typepad, but what gets imported is the original version of the photo, not the edited one that's been cropped, enhanced, renamed etc.
I understand that iphoto is "non-destructive" but how do I get the edited files into my web site. I am looking to create a streamlined process as I'll be doing this a whole lot.
    Thank you for your help.
    GA

My web browser is Chrome version 36.0.1985.125.
From within Typepad, I try to upload a photo into my web page. Insert Images -> Choose file which pops up a dialog that lets me pick files from my computer.
    I've gone two ways here.
    1. When I go to Media -> Photos and select the edited photo I want, the photo shows up as a thumbnail, with the edits I made and the changed name. However, when I then select it and load it into the Typepad post, the original un-edited photo gets imported up with its original name. Not what i want.
    2. When I instead select Favorite -> Documents and select the edited photo which I previously exported out of iPhoto into this Doc folder, the edited photo gets imported with its changed name. So now I have a workaround or maybe it is by design: export the pics if you want them loaded in Typepad.
Now iPhoto has tighter integration with Flickr, so I can simply Share the photo from iPhoto to my Flickr account and the edited version of the file gets uploaded to Flickr. No need to do an export. That's nice, but what I'm looking for is better integration with Typepad/Wordpress.
By the way, the same applies to Google Drive. If I select Upload from within Google Drive and go to Media -> Photos, the edited photo shows up as a tumbnail with the new name I gave it during my edits. When I select it to upload, the original un-edited photo gets uploaded.
Your earlier explanation made me better understand why this is. The iPhoto Previewer tricks us into thinking the edited file is there for us/apps to upload, but it's a virtual update. There's no file behind it to serve up to the app, be-it to Typepad or Google or whatever. iPhoto integrated with Flickr b/c I imagine the demand was there - it's a pain to have to export edits in order to use them. That's why I was asking if a "plug-in" exists that would essentially export the file I selected.  But I can't find them anywhere so I'll have to use a workaround for now.
I'm having another issue with exporting a group of edited pics... not all the changes get exported. But I'll wrestle it on my own for now and post if I get stuck.

  • Problem importing still photos from digital camera.  Any help please?

I wanted to put together a little Premier Pro CS5 project using 20 stills from my Sony digital camera.  When I go through the various options to import them
into my project (Import, Import through Bridge, etc) I get 20 different file names in the Project panel but instead of 20 different photos (as expected) I have 20 copies of the same photograph.
Wow, that is frustrating.  The closest item in the support logs I could find was this one (see below), but that work around is both over my head and very time consuming.
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/730233
I found another discussion along these same lines and it appears that no solution has been found.
I hope I am not asking too much of my $1,000 software program to say, "Please pull in these 20 pics so I can work with them in the timeline."  I just want to hit import and go.
I am using a Win7 computer with a Sony camera taking 3 mega-pixel shots.  Again, all looks to be going well (all 20 filenames in project panel are different) but when those files are opened they are all the same picture.
I've rebooted, opened and close PrPro, tried renaming the pics from the standard dsc123.jpg convention to something else - all to no avail.  I would find it hard to believe that a program this powerful could struggle with such a simple chore - am I doing something incorrect?
    Thank you for any help!
    Stuart

More info about the issue.  This is also a hit-and-miss error, as once you find a way that will appear to work and you say to yourself, "Finally!  I figured it out!"
But once you go to the next photo to pull it in and get on with your project you find that you are pulling in multiple copies of the same picture as the one
    you just pulled in.
This same problem occurs if you attempt to import using the Media Browser, and as an interesting footnote, the Media Browser window has a drop down
list.  When you click each of your different file names, there it is - the same picture.  I've invested 1.5 hours in attempting to find a work-around by importing, renaming, saving, right-clicking, using context menus - everything my 43 years of computer use can muster - but still no luck.
The last time that I created a project similar to this (a mix of video and stills) it worked just fine so that is even more of a head-scratcher for me.
I even went back and re-imported the pics that worked fine into the project that I am struggling with and they came in fine - no duplication.  But vacation pics are the only copies I have and I just need to import these 20 shots and get to work on them.
I would be willing to let someone get my IP address and connect directly like my IT folks at work do so they could see what is going on with this.
Thank you again for any assistance!

  • Help! iMovie isn't importing still photos properly. I get multiple copies of the same photo!

Hello all. iMovie is acting very ornery, and I need help -- or I'll never get my 2011 slideshow completed in time!
I am trying to import several still photos into my movie project. In the past, I have simply dragged and dropped the appropriate photos from the iMovie photo browser into my project. Everything works — the way it should be with Apple products.
Suddenly, iMovie doesn't want to play nice. No matter what photos I drag into the timeline, iMovie inserts multiple copies of one of the video clips that's already in my movie. The photos don't show up. If I play the movie, I get a blank screen where the photo/video should be.
Is anyone else experiencing this probem? Is there an easy way to fix it?
The following picture and text should help explain what I'm doing:
Here are the steps I'm taking:
    1. I select one or several photos from the iMovie photo viewer (on the bottom right-hand side of the window.) -- In this case, I've selected 10 very different photos.
    2. I drag the photos into the project.
    3. iMovie appears to import the photos.
    4. I see 10 identical thumbnails in my project. They appear to be the same as the very last video clip in the project. However, when I scrub these thumbnails, or play the movie, I see a black screen.
I've tried dragging the photos directly from iPhoto, or from the desktop, and still the same thing happens.
    HELP!
    Dave

Thanks wesehrt. I had one jpeg such as "ALL_CAPS.jpeg" --- straight from my iPhone, imported/tweaked in Aperture no less ... and renamed it without the underscore and it worked.
But I wasn't getting multiple copies or black screens. The image would import and I'd see the thumbnail in the project timeline, but what actually rendered was the last frame of the preceding video clip.
Bizarre bugs with photos importation here.

  • Renaming Photos Advice Not Effective

I've gone over the posts on this topic until I can't think straight. Old Toad told someone (a few people, actually) that to rename photos in iPhoto, you must first make a new folder on the desktop, move the photos to it, change the name, then move it back to iPhoto with the new name. I tried that; however, when I began the move, MacBook changed my application from iPhoto to Finder. Old Toad also said that if the photos are changed in Finder, they won't be recognizable to iPhoto and will disappear. If MacBook is going to be changing me to Finder just through the act of moving the photos from iPhoto to something else, how does one follow this advice?
To be fair to you, I'm a new user of Apple, and I don't yet subscribe to the idea that the Mac is THE way of finding ease in home computing. iPhoto is the best example I can think of to demonstrate that it just plain ain't.
    newitchway

You don't have to move them to your PC to rename them. For the photos that are already in your library what you can do is....rename right within iPhoto by giving them titles. You will have to give each photo a distinctive title so they all have different titles. This is one reason why iPhoto does not change the name of the photo in the Finder. What if you named two photos taken on the same day "John". You can't have two files in the same folder with the same name. That is why titles you give in iPhoto, stay within iPhoto and do not change in the Finder.
Anyway, getting back to what you want to do...after you rename them in iPhoto, then share>export each roll to a new folder on the desktop. In the export window, choose "title" as the naming scheme. Once all rolls are exported to their respective folders one the desktop, close iPhoto.
Now navigate to the Pictures folder and rename the iPhoto Library folder to "iPhoto Library_old"
Launch iPhoto and it will ask you to "create" or "choose" and iPhoto library to open.
    Hit "create"
    Name the new library
Once the new library is open, drag your folders on the desktop one at a time into an open iPhoto Library viewing window.
Once all the folders are imported you will now have the photos having the same name in the finder that they will have within iPhoto.
You can delete the old library and all the folders on the desktop now.
In the future, use Image Capture to download your images to the Pictures folder. Put them in a dated folder and then rename the photos. Remember you can't give two photos the same name. Once the photos are renamed then you can import that folder into iPhoto. Once imported, you can then delete the folder or save it to burn for backup.
iPhoto: How to Change the "Open Automatically" Preference
I have to tell you though, I think that this a lot of work for something that really doesn't need to be done. I find it to time consuming to rename photos. I always keep the name given from the camera. I don't even title them in iPhoto. I do give all my photos keywords to make it easy to find the photos I want.
