IMPORT SETTINGS and I-POD
While in i-Tunes 7 "HELP" found the following info.
IT SAID
-If you imported the music to your comp. using Quicktime 6.2, you most probably did it in AAC (Advanced Audio Encoding) uses less space than AIFF.
-AIFF was used by folk who planned on burning Hi-Quality CD's
BUT - BUT - BUT
iTunes supports MPEG-4 AAC files, NOT the older AAC
IT ALSO SAID
-If you imported with i-Tunes and used AAC or Apple Lossless as encoding, you can get them to i-PODS "...... that use a dock connector" otherwise import the songs using the MP3 Encoding.
QUESTION -- QUESTION -- QUESTION
?? - Does this mean that those who imported in Quicktime cannot copy to iPOD using the direct USB cable?
?? -They must use USB and the DOCK??
?? - OR change the encoding to MP3 BEFORE copying to i-POD??
?? - Does this mean that if I imported to i-Tunes using AIFF or Apple lossless, I cannot copy to 5G i-Pod using direct USB cable??
?? - I must use Dock also or change all my codes to MP3 THEN copy??
?? - Does this all mean that regardless of Generation of i-POD, regardless of what I want to copy, connecting it to my Mac with the Dock covers all encoding sins??
iMac Mac OS X (10.4.7)
iMac Mac OS X (10.4.7)
iMac Mac OS X (10.4.7)
Does this mean that if I imported to i-Tunes using AIFF or Apple lossless, I cannot copy to 5G i-Pod using direct USB cable??
you can transfer AIFF and Apple Lossless to a 5th gen, with or without a dock. see:

Hello, I have a Toshiba Netbook that I just put i-tunes on and when I go into import settings, I want to change it to MP3, but when I leave the dialogue box, it defaults back to AAC. What am I missing? Thanks.
I wonder if I'm missing that OK because the screen on this netbook is smaller than a laptop and only supports 1024 X 600. I can't scroll that box up any, and can't grab the top and move it up. So when I exit that box I have to click the x in the top right corner.
Acck. Yes, that'll be the issue. There's an OK and a Cancel down at the bottom of the screen.
This is going to seem a weird suggestion, but it's the only thing that is springing to mind at the moment ... Do you know someone with an external monitor, or a TV that supports PC input? If so, try temporarily attaching the netbook to that. Can you do the preference change on the larger monitor? -
Import settings and extensions from DW CS3
I have CS3 exactly the way I want it, but would like to
upgrade to CS4. However, I don't want to go through the pain of
manually moving my FTP settings, extensions, plug-ins, brushes ,etc
Has Adobe automated this process yet?
Forgive me if this a duplicate, but the search feature on
this site is not working. I also tried calling Adobe, and after 10
minute wait, 15 minutes to explain to someone that I did indeed
have a legal copy, being transferred for 5 minutes and then
disconnected, I decided to try here (I was trying to save time).

If you are installing on the same system, then your site
definitions and
your extensions should all be migrated for you. As for
"plug-ins" and
"brushes", that would be more pertinent to FW, I believe.
Sorry I don't
know about that.
I'm not sure what the rest of your post is about....

Best use of import settings and DSLR video workflow
I now use a Canon 7D for most of my video, which does 1080p.
I used to move my video clips into iMovie, thinking I could use it as a master repository like Aperture. Alas, it iMovie 09 crashed repeatedly and I have lost many of those clips when I marked portions as rejected, and applied the rejections (thus deleting the clips).
I now archive all my RAW video, but I'm wondering what many of you do when importing DSLR-based video.
Do most of you who capture at 1080p import as Large, or as Full? What are your plans for exporting? Large, 720p, 1080p?
I know this is highly dependent upon final output, and that the difference between Large and 1080p is at least 5x the size.
How are you managing your space, while trying to archive your video?
I've grown accustomed to Aperture, where I have one RAW file, and possibly one TIFF file for effects. In iMovie, I have the RAW, the event, the "shared" version for each "size" I share, then a copy in iTunes, and of course, copies on destination devices. This is a tapeless workflow for Final Cut but I think the same applies.
http://library.creativecow.net/rossshane/tapeless-workflowfcp-7/1
You want to first, outside of iMovie, pull your footage natively at the highest resolution possible then import it into your editor of choice.
Space should not be an issue now that 2TB drives are like $100 dollars I have a media drive, a render drive, a backup drive and the OSX boot drive.

I love Firefox and have relied on it for years. But I'm now planning to move from PC to Mac and would like to keep as much of my Firefox personalization and customization as possible. I have never needed to use the Synch feature before, and I cannot find reliable instructions telling me how to do it in these circumstances. Does anyone have any helpful suggestions? Thanks very much.
Ubuntu may have moved those three button as well to that control bar.

Change Default Import Settings
This has bugged me for a while now. I have created an Import Preset to import my photos to my "F" drive. Works perfectly but sometimes...the import Preset reverts to the original Lightroom Import setting which imports to my "C".drive. If I right click on my Import Preset, my Import to "F" is checked.
How can I prevent LR4 from reverting to the default import settings and is there anyway to either remove the old default altogether or make my Import to "F", my default?
BobI found a previous post that appears to work. Since the netbook doesn't show an OK in the preference window, I just had to hit enter to accept and change the setting.
Thanks to all. -
I have asked this before and have never received a responce. Years ago you could set the ACC import settings to always import in mono; I have a hearing disability and need this setting. Apple removed to option of customising the AAC import settings and, despite requesting it be reinstated, they continue to omit the fuctionality from iTunes.
Why do they continue to discriminate against people with monotorial hearing or deafness in one ear?
Is it worth taking this forward through the UK discrimination laws?
Why will Apple not reinstate this function?Swaish,
The AAC Custom dialog is working normally for me, including the ability to set Mono. This is on iTfW 10.6. However, I have seen similar complaints to yours expressed on the Forum, so it in fact may have a bug in some versions.
Just to give it a kick, try resetting it to something else, OK out, restart your machine, and then try again to use the AAC Customer dialog. You can also try the MP3 Custom settings (instead of AAC) and see if Mono is working normally.
If neither of those will shock it into submission, submit a complaint to the Apple Feedback page:

If I select tracks from a Shared library I can't import them as the strip containing "Show: All Items" and the "Settings" and "Import" buttons, does not display at the bottom of the screen. Goes straight from the list of tracks to the strip with Playlist icons and xxxx items, tttttt total time, yyyy GB.

I have a password problem. After importing data and settings from one MacBook Pro to a new one, I have to put my iCloud password in when re-starting the new computer, but the password from the old computer in when waking the computer from sleep. I want to use my iCloud password on both computers consistently. How can I fix this?
The only other place to change a password for the computer login is in Users & Groups preferences. But I don't really know enough here to fix your problem. You can try fixing the keychain:
iCloud- Frequently asked questions about iCloud Keychain
Tutorial: Resolving Keychain Issues
If you can't access your keychain, or forget your password If you can't get into your keychain file because you've forgotten your password or the keychain file appears to be corrupt, there are a couple of options.
First, if you've forgotten your password, you can use the "Keychain First Aid" utility to make the keychain password the same as the login password. This can be accomplished via the following process:
1. Open Keychain Access (located in Applications/Utilities)
2. Go to the "Keychain Access" menu and select "Preferences"
3. Click the "First Aid" tab
4. Make sure the "Synchronize login keychain password" box is checked
5. Close the Preferences window
6. Go to the "Keychain Access" menu and select "Keychain First Aid"
7. Enter your username and password
8. Click the "Repair" button
The second option is to completely delete your keychain then recreate it. This routine is useful if your keychain appears to be corrupt or otherwise inaccessible. This can be accomplished as follows:
1. Launch Keychain Access (located in Applications/Utilities)
2. Click "Show Keychains" in the lower-left corner of the window.
3. Select the problematic keychain from the left-hand pane.
4. Navigate to the "File" menu and select "Delete Keychain '(name of keychain)'"
5. Check all options for deletion and press "OK"
6. Create a new keychain by going to the "File" menu, then "New" and selecting
"New Keychain"
7. You can now make this keychain your default if you desire by selecting it, then
going to the "File" menu and selecting "Make '(name of keychain)' Default"
Login as root and perform repair In some cases, problems with keychains can only be resolved when logged in as the root user.
First, you want to enable the root user:
1. OS X Mountain Lion: Enable and disable the root user
2. OS X Lion: Enable and disable the root user
3. Mac OS X 10.6: Enabling the root user
4. Enabling and using the "root" user in Mac OS X
After enabling the root user, and logging in under this account, again open Keychain Access. First attempt repairs using Keychain First Aid, and failing that, delete then recreate the keychain as described above while logged in as root.
Persistently asked for stored passwords If you are persistently asked for passwords in various applications that you have specified should be remembered in a keychain, your "login" keychain may not be active for one reason or another.
Navigate to ~/Library/Keychains/ (this is the Library folder inside your user's home folder). Find the file named "login.keychain" and double-click it.
Failing that, select the "login" keychain within the Keychain Access application and make sure it is the default keychain by going to the "File" menu and selecting "Make 'Login' Default"
Turn off Keychain synchronization in applications having problems If specific applications are experiencing issues when accessing password-protected material, the Keychain may be to blame.

Import, Export and Preset settings from TimeMachine
I'd like to recover only my Import, Export and Preset settings of Aperture 3.0 from my backup disk using TimeMachine. Can someone pls guide me on what files to look for and where to find them? (I just reformatted my MBP and hence this query).
Thanks in advance. You will find the setting in your User Library in the folder
Your Home Directory > Library > Application Support > Aperture
Everything with "preset" in its name might be interesting to you.
Reveal the User Library by going to the Finder main menu bar, select "Go" and hold down the "option" key, until you see the Library in the drop down menu. Select it.
In the Library Finder window navigate to the "Application Support" folder, then "Aperture".
Drag the Aperture folder to the Finder Sidebar for easy access, then open Time Machine.
Go back in Time to the time you want to restore from, then restore the "Aperture Folder" to your Desktop and copy the files you need to your Library.

Lost my import settings pull down and menu
I've been having problems running Aperture....slow speed, not seeing previews...etc...
I was told to repair library data base by holding the opt+comm keys when opening Aperture.
I did a repair and was still having issues so I did a rebuild as a last resort.
Now when I try to import from my memory card I no longer have an import settings pull down or menu....essentially I cant import!
Any suggestions? When menu items are missing it might be a problem of corrupted preferences files or a system wide problem.
As a test: Run Aperture from a different user account, for example the Guest account. Is the "Import" manual there?
If all menues are in a different user account, delete your User Preferences, as described in Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics (the paragraph "Delete the user preferences"). Log off and on again after doing that.
If the problem occurs in all accounts, reinstall Aperture.
And if that stll does not help, post back and tell us more - have you installed anything lately? Any other applications behaving strangely? Have you done any maintainance, cleaning running cleaner applications?

Lost settings and import tab on with itunes 10
We've lost the settings and import tabs that are supposed to be at the lower right in itunes. Any idea how to get them back. And/or how else to import music from an old computer to a new one using home sharing.
You can restore much of the look & feel of the previous version with these shortcuts:
ALT to temporarily display the menu bar
CTRL+B to show or hide the menu bar
CTRL+S to show or hide the sidebar
CTRL+/ to show or hide the status bar (won't hide for me on Win XP)
Click the magnifying glass top right and untick Search Entire Library to restore the old search behaviour
Use View > Hide <Media Kind> in the cloud or Edit > Preferences > Store and untick Show iTunes in the cloud purchases to hide the cloud items. The second method eliminates the cloud status column (and may let iTunes start up more quickly)
If you don't like having different coloured background & text in the Album view use Edit > Preferences > General and untick Use custom colours for open albums, movies, etc.

I have just required a second hand mac and when I try to download a song or import a cd to iTunes an error notice says that I am not priveledged to make changes? The preference settings and apple I'd seem to be ok. How do I fix this?
Greetings,
I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.
Good Luck - Cheers,
M.
