Import Settings, Use error correction

I just read that the "Use error correction when reading Audio CDs" box in iTunes Import Settings should really be on, (even though it's slower).
on this page http://www.kenrockwell.com/apple/itunes.htm It's copyright 2006
Is this really the case?

Hi
An up for this topic.
Always the same question : use correction or not.
Nobody knows today how this function works (except Apple may be...)
When error correct is off : in case of problem, Is the player works like a cd player, creating a /making a new information or does he pass many times until having the good information.
When error correction is on : In case of problem what happend ? does he pass many times (thats why its slower...) until having the good information ?
The way is having bit perfect at the end even it is long...
An idea ?

  • Using "Error Correction"

When importing a CD using “Apple Lossless Encoder” is ok to leave the preference set to “Use error correction when reading Audio CDs”? I know it slows the transfer down but is the quality compromised in any way? Even on pristine CDs?

I always use the error correction. The optical drive does it's own error correction, but the software takes it one step further. I don't see it reducing the speed of an import by a significant amount. But since you're clearly a major audiophile, it seems like you would rather be safe than sorry and do the error correction no matter how pristine you think your CDs are.

  • Is there 64bit thunderbird Can it import settings using MozBackup

Due to a complex problem on Win7 64 Laptop, I can only access the net with 64bit apps like WaterFox. 32bit Thunderbird can't send or receive emails. At home, I use 32bit Tbird on a desktop, but I need a 64bit client for travel.
If there is one, can I use Mozbackup to have it get my settings.
Will the emails I read or send from the laptop still be available on the desktop when I return?
    Thanks for any insights.

I would use the nightly 64bit builds. They may not be supported, but they are built from the same source and have been reliable for me. Although I am currently using the 32bit nightly. I would however disable the automatic update.. In your case you do not want to be updating each day to the new version.
A Mozilla download source here http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/nightly/latest-comm-central/

  • ITunes Will Not Play Entire CDs Unless Error Correction Switched Off!

I was having problems with iTunes in that it would only play 2 tracks on a CD before iTunes froze and had to be Force Quit.
On the advice of a poster on this Apple Discussions Forum I went into: iTunes>Preferences>Advanced>Importing and unchecked the "Use error correction" button. Voila, my iTunes will now play complete CDs.
But surely this is not right? It has been suggested to me that this is a software issue and that I should carry out an archive and install of Leopard.
    What do you think?

+4. Windows blue screen comes up to check the FAT32 drive to see if there are any errors. There is nothing.+
what numerical and text codes are you getting with it? (ie 0x[zeros/letters/numbers] CAPSANDUNDERSCORES)
if the blue screen mentions a specific file, let us know what that is called too. (exact spelling, please.)

  • Error Correction for iTunes?

When importing CDs into iTunes there is an option for Use Error Correction. There is a minimal explanation under Help as to what it does but not as to how. Does anyone know how the Error Correction process works. Is there a check against a data base comparing the rip against others to verify accuracy? Any details you can provide is appreciated.
My interest in knowing is maintaining the highest quality and most accurate iTunes library possible.

found in another discussion on another forum:
    David Charlap
Don Hurter asks what "Use error correction when reading Audio CDs" does.
Audio CDs have error correction codes on the disc, so that errors (like manufacturing defects, scratches, fingerprints, and even some copy protection schemes) can often be played through without corrupting the sound.
When you rip a CD, the computer reads the raw audio data from the disc. Typically, it just reads the audio samples and ignores the error-correction codes, assuming that the data will be good. This means that if there are any errors on the disc, those errors will become defects in the sound (typically heard as pops or clicks.)
When you turn on the "use error correction" feature, iTunes will process the error correcting codes along with the audio samples, using them to correct any errors it finds. If your computer is fast enough (relative to the drive's audio-extraction speed), you won't notice a slowdown (but you may notice an increase in CPU usage.) If the computer is not that fast, using error correction will slow down the ripping.

What can I do to correct this error: The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software.  Please reinstall iTunes.  I have reinstalled several times but it hasn't changed this error message.  Why am I able to burn a CD using Media Player but not iTunes?  I am using Windows XP and I have burned cds from iTunes in the past.

1: Follow this support doc to completly remove iTunes (your files remain)

Can I uninstall existing iTunes without losing my media library?  and then install fresh to fix this problem?

iTunes for Windows: "Registry settings" warning when opening iTunes

  • Error msg at launch says "Registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing. ... Please reinstall iTunes."

Each time I launch iTunes (latest version) on Windows 7 (w/ latest system updates) I receive the following error msg:
"Warning! The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing.  This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software.  Please reinstall iTunes."
When I click on "OK" iTunes completes the launch process and the application functions properly.  This error msg appears without fail every time I launch the app.
I have reinstalled iTunes four times and continue to receive this message.  iTunes is set in the system Control Panel as the default program for all functions that iTunes uses.  I never burn CDs or DVDs and have never attempted to do so on this machine.  I have had iTunes on this computer since I bought it last November and never had a problem with it until 2 months ago when this message began popping up.  I did not notice any action I took that caused this, in terms of creating conflicts.
I hope someone can assist me in finding a way to stop this annoying error!  Thanks!
    David

  • Recently, when I want to burn a CD, I'm receiving the error message - "The Registry settings used by iTunes drivers for importing and burning CD's

Maybe someone can help me - lately, I keep receiving this error message when I want to burn a CD: "The Registry settings used by iTunes drivers for importing & burning CD's is missing. Please re-install iTunes." I've re-installed a number of times and it still won't burn CD's. I can play the music through my PC. I just can't burn CD's. any ideas?

Same problem as me. No answers though. Also I can't access the itunes store. There is something missing in the registry but what? Seeing as your post was sometime ago it looks like there is no help.

When connecting to Itunes, it shows the following error: registry settings used by itunes drivers for importing and burning cds are missing.
I have edited the registery, downloaded the Gear drivers, uninstalled and installed itunes, and the error still appears.
What else can I do.  Cannot connect any of our iphones or ipods to itunes because of this error.

    I have edited the registery,
We'd better have a closer look at the keys to see what's going on.
Can you post a screenshot of the contents of the key you've been editing, please? Include all of the regedit screen, including the left-hand column. Save the screenshot to an image file, and insert the image file in a reply by clicking the wee camera icon at the top of the reply window.
