Import site to Iweb

Hi, My computer crashed but I got the website saved in a folder. How do I open the folder in Iweb again?

How do I open the folder in Iweb again?
You can't. You need to have a copy of the Domain file (normally located at Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb). Otherwise you will need to recreate your site.

  • Can't import site into iWeb

I just updated one of my machines to Mountain Lion as a clean install, and i installed iWeb because that's what I created my website in. I had copied the saved file (Domain.sites2) from my other computer, and tried to open it in the ML iWeb, but it won't open like it does on my 10.6 machine. What's going on? I hardly use the 10.6 machine anymore, and will be using this one more, so i need tog et this to work. Thanks

    Try this:
In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
To open your domain file in Lion or Mountain Lion or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
    tell application "iWeb" to activate
You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.
Just launch the application, find and select the domain file in your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder that you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder.  So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.

  • How can I import my iweb site into iweb on my new laptop?

I recently got a new MacBook Pro and transferred my files over from my PBG4 12-inch (great little laptop). However my iWeb files/site didn't seem to transfer over to my laptop. I found the files of on my PBG4, and thought I placed them in the correct folder on my one.
Every time I open iWeb it asks to start a new site. How can I import my old iweb site into it and continue with it? Is there a way of doing it? I've a read a few posts some talk about the file 'Domain' in the Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder.
If I copy that file over to my new MacBook Pro, will my site be in iWeb again? I greatly appreciate some advice. Thanks.

    Isotopecrunch,
    Welcome to the iWeb forums!
You are correct about referring to the Domain file; this is the file that contains all of your work created in iWeb, and the file that needs to be transferred to your new MacBook. There are some notes on how to do this here.
Take the time also to make back up copies of this file, and keep them in a safe place.

  • Import existing site to iweb?

I'm switching from pc to mac, and having some web publishing issues.
I've got a couple existing published websites that I'd like to import onto my mac and edit. I opened iweb to try it out, and I can't seem to simply open the existing site within iweb. Is that possible?
If that's not possible, can someone recommend an HTML editor? I use Dreamweaver on my PC, but don't want to shell out an additional $399 for the mac version.
    thanks.

I use BBEdit for all of my web development. It is very good but is geared towards advanced users.

  • Import older sites to iweb 8

i have a folder with a bunch of iweb sites I think I created in iweb 7...recently I've build some sites in iweb 8...how do I import these 7 sites into iweb8?

Open the domain file that iWeb 07 used to create the sites with iWeb 08 and continue from there.  But you need the domain.sites file that was used.  If you don't have it or have a backup copy you'll have to rebuild the sites from scratch. Chapter 2.3 on the iWeb FAQ.org site has tips on using some of the existing files, image, audio, video, etc., from the published site in the recreation of the site.

  • Created a web site in iweb, i have a domain through godaddy, what resource can I use as host?

Created a web site in iweb. I have a domain name through GoDaddy, What resource should I use to make site public?

I would agree that it helps the newcomer to FTP to have a hosting service whose tech support understand the unique structure of iWeb created sites. I have lost count of the number of users who have asked me to sort out problems created by tech support employed by numerous hosting services - including the mighty GoDaddy.
A lot of tech support people don't seem to bother to look at the form and function of the iWeb index.html files and advise users that they have to rename their home page to "index". While this holds true for most websites, it certainly doesn't apply to iWeb.
Its not "simply the html and css files". How many users come unstuck when they forget about the feed.xml?
People who hand out advice in this forum about uploading files via "Cyberduck" tend to miss out the part about the importance of maintaining the site structure by uploading the whole folder created by iWeb plus the external index.html.
They also may not have been around back when I first announced that I uploaded the contents of the iWeb folder to get rid of the site name in the URL. I was shot down in flames by the iWeb "experts" and told that this was impossible - even although I was obviously doing it!
Although this method of uploading the files has become accepted practice in the iWeb community I wouldn't recommend it to those who are new to FTP unless they have help from a tech support person who actually understands the problems involved and can point out the downside. Those who claim that it is "simple" and "easy" have obviously forgotten the first time that they tried it!
A lot of the people who come to this forum for help with FTP end up in a complete mess due to the conflicting and inadequate advice they get due to the fact that the "adviser" hasn't a clue about the hosting account structure and can't view the actual files. In many cases, I have had to go into the users hosting account and sort out the mess created by bad advice and ignorance. This should really be done by the hosting service's tech support but, in many cases, they helped create the problem in the first place.
The mere fact that an iWeb user has to come to this forum for help with FTP seems to suggest that their hosting service has inferior tech support.

  • How do i open my pre existing iWeb created site in iWeb? (computer got wiped entirely without backup)

I have a pre exisiting website that i built with iweb about 2 years ago. Within the last month my computer got wiped entirely. I was unable to do a backup before this happened because it froze up in the middle of a software update. How do i open my site in iweb to continue editing it?? It is still online, is there a way to import it? Thank you!

Unfortunately, iWeb does not have an import feature. So, the website will need to be recreated. With, it being online you may be able to copy and paste your content from the site online to the one that you will be recreating in iWeb.

  • Managing more than one site in iWeb

I've just created a new (second) site using iWeb. I want to edit my first website but, when I open iWeb, it opens my new site. How do I now get hold of my first (original) website to edit it?
N.b. My first (original) site is still up and running on the net.
Thanks in advance for help and advice.
    Rob

Locate your domain file for your first website - it can be found under User/Library/Application Support/iWeb/domain.sites. Note it is your User Library and not your System library. Double click on this and you will be able to alter your site.
Doesn't matter that it is still on the net - iWeb can't import so you need the domain file.

  • Import Website Into iWeb

I have two Macs and I made a website in iWeb on one of them, so how do I import it into iWeb on my other Mac?

(ps: to have the sites showing up in iWeb double-click the domain file)

  • Moving site to iweb

Is iweb used only to build a site, or is it possible to move an existing site over to it?

    Alisonlee...
You've guess right....iWeb is a one way site publishing machine. You can use it to build and edit your sites and then publish those sites. But there is no way to import sites/pages that have already been published previously back into iWeb for editing.

  • Can I import a non-iWeb website into iWeb?

How can I import a non-iWeb website into iWeb so that I can use iWeb to edit the site?

You can't: iWeb cannot import html files, and relies entirely on its own 'Domain' file which lives by default in your User Library. You would have to recreate the site from scratch, using the original as a guide and a source for images and text; or use an HTML editor.
Depending on how complicated the site is you may be able to do this in Kompozer, which is free. It is a WYSIWYG web page created which also gives you access to the code, and which can open any HTML page (though if the page is heavily dependent on external CSS you may have difficulties with it).

  • Restoring a site in iWeb after hard disk crash

Hi all - I've had great help in answering my questions in the past. Thanks in advance.
I used iWeb on a MacBook to create a site (www.thewarmfront.com) and the hard disk died on it. FYI - Applecare was fantastic. Quick turn - 1 day repair.
Anyway, I have the site on the server, and as a zip file that I e-mailed to the webmaster. Can I simply unzip the file, and will iWeb recognize all the elements as its own?
Or will the files need some manipulation to get iWeb working on that site on the Macbook?
    Thanks!

I'm guessing the domain.sites would have been on the MacBook HD, correct?
Let's approach this from a different angle. I have all the files that iWeb used to publish the site.
I don't mind recreating the site, but if I can import most of it back in that would save me a lot of time.
I have literally everything that iWeb uses to publish the site, all the files, .css, images, etc.
    Can I -
    a) edit a new domain.sites to recreate it?
    b) start a new 'The Warmfront' site on iWeb and import / cut paste the old files in?
    Thanks again...

  • Downloading FTP site into iWeb

I have an FTP website which was written and uploaded some time ago from a Windows PC. I would now like to be able to edit the site from my home iMac.
So far I have been unable to download the files from the site into iWeb.
Can anyone please tell me how to download the files from my old FTP site into iWeb?

    iWeb cannot import webpages.
If you want these pages in iWeb, add a new page and then copy/paste the content from your current webpage(s).
Nice detail, if you copy text, do paste in iWeb. No need for adding a textbox first. The text will retain it's formatting.
Images you simply drag from your webpage to the page in iWeb.

  • Made a site in iWeb 08, have new computer and iWeb 09, How do it get it to

So I made my site in iWeb 08 last year and published it to my .mac account. I got a new computer this year at school, I am a teacher, and now don't know how to get my web site into the iWeb09 app. I have the folder that I saved/published to from the old computer. I need to go in and make changes but can't get there from here.
    the site is web.me.com/andrewpatch
    Thanks for the help.

iWeb can't open or import previously published pages or files.
You need the domain.sites2 file from that User Application Support folder.

  • Moving OLD .MAc site to iWeb

How can I import my old .Mac site to iWeb for editing and republishing under my new .Me URL?- Mark my E- Mail address is [email protected]

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Was this site created with Homepage? iWeb cannot import html files, only create them. So if you want to convert that site to an iWeb site you'll have to recreate it from scratch. However, Chapter 2.3 of the iWeb FAQ.org site has tips on using some of the published files in the reconstruction of the site.
Or, you can just leave the site where it is and link to it from your new iWeb site or embed the site into an iWeb page like this example: Embed One Site Within an iWeb Page. It's a site created with Homepage and still in the Homepage section of iDisk.
