Import songs from an ipod

I had computer troubles and had to format. I reinstalled Itunes. Is there a way I can get the songs from my ipod to the itunes library and playlist? If I connect my ipod to my computer, itune will updates my ipod, and i'll lose everything because there is nothing in the newly installed ituns. Right?

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7.3 or later installed hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys together. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. The transfer of content from sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

My computer doesn't have the songs from my old computer so I was wondering if there was a way to import songs from an iPod to a computer, because if I update my iPod now, all of my songs will be lost.

For iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
For all other non purchased music (your own CDs etc) try this method which works on some Windows PCs.
Enable your iPod for disk use.

Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.

Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it can be messy.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Another free program is Pod Player.
SharePod is also freeware.

If you're using iTunes 7, you can copy music that you purchased from the iTunes Store back to iTunes directly. You will have to prevent automatic synchronization. I had to reformat my Windows partition and I backed up all of my iTunes to my external hard drive and I need to transfer them back. Also when I backed them up they were created in 8.0+ version. Would I need to get iTunes to the most current version or would it be fine if I didn't. Thanks.

Type this into the search box: transfer songs from iPod to iTunes and click on the link that says "Using your iPod as a hard disk". Scroll to the bottom of that article and you'll see a title that says "Copying music from your iPod to your computer". That's what you need.

I can't recommend any of the free ones. They either wouldn't install, or had severe limits not present in the purchased version. My advice is to shell out the $20 bucks.

Need to Import songs from Ipod to Itunes

Hey, so yeah my comp fried itself the other day [hard disk corrupt files issues] and i managed to get it fixed, with a new copy of windows installed. problem is i didnt wipe the hard disk [because many files are ones id rather not lose] and so the other account which was on 'dont share my files' [windows is ******** that way] is completely unaccessable. This means i lose access to documents, settings, and everything on the desktop / user-related files. They're still on my computer, but completely unaccessable , and windows pretends they arent there, because im a 'different user' now. Itunes was part of that. along with my songs folder. So i reinstall itunes, and the ipod registers, though saying it is registered to another itunes library, and i can change it to this one [if i want to wipe all my songs for the nothing that the current library has in it].
So clearly what i need to do is import songs from the ipod to the itunes library that i have now. This option doesnt seem to exist, ive been looking for it for some time. Any ideas?

have the music files on your PC -- but not seen in iTunes.
Check using Windows Explorer in 'My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\...' for folders containing your music (or wherever you keep your music folders). If it is there, we can get iTunes to recognize it. Try one or both of these:
--- In iTunes choose: Edit==>Preferences==>Advanced tab. Select 'Change' and browse to the music folder in your PC drive (if it isnt already). Click OK to save that setting.
--- In iTunes choose: File==>Add Folder to Library & browse to the music folder in your PC drive. Click OK.
Also check in your Recycle Bin to see if you accidentally deleted it. If so, Restore it back to its original spot.
Then try running a search using Windows Explorer (or similar) for files with the extensions of: m4a, m4p, MP3,
i OR
with the partial names of the songs you are missing.
Do all the above before you decide that they have been completely erased from your hard drive.

My hard drive failed. Fortunately all of my songs were backed up on my iPod. Got a new computer and can't figure out how to get the songs from my iPod back to my computer.
