Import swatches, styles, symbols, character styles with applescript

I've done plenty of Illustrator scripting with applescript, but can't seem to find a way of automating import of swatches, styles, symbols, and/or character styles from existing file. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

Oh sorry forgot to tell you what I usually do with this. To get around it, I usually create an empty document with all the library of a document category on it and save that document to a server. If anyone want to create a document of that type I would just tell them to grab that file from the server to their local computer. It won't work if you are editing existing document UNLESS, you don't want the library saved only to the old document. In that case you can just copy every thing on the old document with script and paste it on the pre-made document that have all the library on it.
Sounds pretty low tech, but it gets it done.

  • Placing symbols by name with applescript...

I need to place a series of symbols in a document in Illustrator CS3... some symbols have multiple instances, some have only one... i need to be able to refer to them by name... right now, i can only seem to place them using this syntax...
    make new symbol item in document 1 with properties {symbol:symbol 1 of document 1}
i'd like to use something like this...
    make new symbol item in document 1 with properties {symbol:{name:"Text Tag"}
i've tried different syntax after the "symbol" property, but i can't seem to find what works, if there's anything that actually works...
    any suggestions?..

I don't understand this corrospondence. I'm having the exact same problem, but I can not figure out from Larry's post how I can find the answer in the scripting forum. Any help please? I tried searching the forums for Larry's posts with keywords, but no luck.

  • Numbered bullet character style with underline not showing

    Hi,
I have a paragraph style for numbered bullets where I've used a character style for the numbered bullet.
The character style has an underline applied so the effect looks like white text on a blue box, the blue box being created by the underline.
The 'Paper' coloured number is showing, I can see it by placing a coloured box behind the text box to test.
But the blue underline is not showing. When I apply the character style on other text it works fine.
    Could this be a bug?
InDesign CC, Mac OS X 10.8.4

    Thanks for responding.
"Paper" is the colour I am using for the character colour and then using another named colour for the underline.
But it is happening the same as you suggest in your screengrab.
In my screengrab below I have put in a black box to show that there is no underline appearing!
And my paragraph style with that character style applied:
So how do we submit this as a bug? And why hasn't it been fixed before now?!!!
    thanks.

  • How to export/Import default prefs and object styles with no project open?

I would like to export my preferences and object styles with no projects open and them import them on my team's machines so that no matter what project we create, we all start from the SAME set of defaults.  When I open captivate and check both with no projects open, there is no ability to import/export.  I know I could open a project and export, but then importing is an issue.
    I'm using CP8 on a Windows 8.1 64 bit machine.
    Help?
    Thx.
    Lori

After a fresh install I start by editing the Preferences globally, that means by using Edit, Preferences before opening any project (like switching to Expert UI, default language, replacing feedback captions by shapes). There is indeed no way to import preferences from a specific file. I will do the same for some object styles (like creating a blank Highlight box for audio objects). You can only export/import from and to a project,  same like for all Library assets.
However the Object styles: they are part of the default theme, along with their theme colors, master slides and skin. You cannot edit everything without having a project open. I would recommend to create a custom theme in a project, in which you have all the wanted object styles. Changing the theme colors (you can have a custom theme color palette) will change partially colors of the objects. Once you set that theme as default theme, you'll have all the object styles in the projects that use the default theme.
To transfer Preferences, custom themes to another machine, maybe this article could help you out. It was written for a different purpose, but you'll find the location of a lot of files that you could transfer in this post:

  • Clipboard Preference: All information (Index Markers, Swatches, Styles, etc.)

Where I work we paste text often from PDFs into InDesign. For the longest time, since CS2, we have had our InDesign's Paste Preferences set to "Text Only" instead of "All information (Index Markers, Swatches, Styles, etc.)"
I am not sure why, but I think it was based on the fear of the unknown. Has anybody experiences any pitfalls with having "All information (Index Markers, Swatches, Styles, etc.)" checked?
I notice it carries over RGB swatches, which is rather annoying because we don't want them. And this is what I don't understand…
If I create an InDesign document and assign some copy a CMYK swatch, then export the PDF to X1-a, then open the PDF in Reader and paste this text into the same InDesign document, I will get a new RGB swatch that when switched/changed to CMYK has different C,M,Y,K values than the original CMYK swatch that I began with.
Is there any way to retain the same swatch values through this process?

You will notice that in the Text Properties for text selected in Acrobat it does not have a CMYK colour picker. It only has a RGB colour picker.
That's why when you select text it copies it as RGB and not CMYK.
The RGB is only for displaying onscreen, rest assure it does in fact keep the CMYK data safe, regardless of whether you include the profile or not in the PDF.
It removes any swatches, any styles and anything else to make a basic "portable document format". Acrobat has no colour pallete for CMYK. So when you select the CMYK text in Acrobat, then Acrobat colour pallete itself converts those values to RGB. If you understand what I'm saying. So the CMYK data is still there, only Acrobat has no way for you to select that colour so it converts it to RGB in the Colour Pallete only.
I'm not sure if I explained that very well?
I usually leave on the option to retain all swatches, styles, etc. because I don't like having to apply bold, italic, swatch colours etc. to text. Hyperlinks come in as character styles and can be easily changed.
I've not had any problems with it. There are times I do need to turn the option off - but that's why it's there, it's a preference, a choice, an option.

  • Load or import custom style mapping in link options – is that possible somehow?

    Hi Everyone,
I'm working with Instructions for Use and Technical Manual documents in InDesign. I'm constantly fine-tuning our templates, and now I have to refresh them again, because of a brand refresh. I'm using the Custom Style Mapping in the Link Options panel a lot, because it helps us to copy the text from older documents to the new ones with the right formatting, with less effort. The only thing I miss is the “Load/Import Custom Style Mapping” option from this panel.
Do you know if there’s any options to export/import/load these mappings somehow from one document to another? Is it possible to write a script for that? I find this part of InDesign quite unattached, it seems to me (based on my search) that no other people are using it. I feel lonely, help me here!
(I have created many new mappings in an older document, and I’d like to be able to use them in the new templates as well, but I can only do that if I map the styles again. And it’s quite time consuming. Maybe I'm just using too many paragraph styles, I have no idea – this could be another question: what is too much when it comes to styles...)
    Thanks a lot,
    Zita

Sync is not intended to be used as a backup service like you are talking about, but it will work as long as you save the Recovery Key, as Jefferson mentioned (you also need your Sync Username ''[email address you used]'' and your account Password).
Mozilla has just started working a new "cloud service" that is code named '''PiCL''' for "Profile in CLoud", which I am expecting will be a lot easier to use and might allow the user to access their bookmarks and other data from the internet without adding a "borrowed" PC to your Sync account.

  • Edit Illustrator symbol with AppleScript

    Hello,
Does anyone know if it is possible to edit an existing symbol in an Illustrator CS3 document with AppleScript? Specifically, what I'm trying to do is this: I'd like to manually create an Illustrator document that uses the "3D Extrude and Bevel" effect to map symbols to the surfaces of the 3D object. Then, I'd like to programatically open that Illustrator document, edit the existing symbols (so the surfaces of the 3D object are updated), and finally export an image.
From what I've found in the AppleScript documentation PDF, I'm thinking this is not possible since it lists all the properties of a symbol object as read-only. But perhaps I'm overlooking something?
If it is not possible, is there another way of doing what I'm trying to achieve?
    Thanks!
    Ben

Ben, could you not have just swapped your symbols? like:
set symbol of every symbol item to symbol "Foo"
Justin, if it is essential that you need to crack open a symbol item then it may be possible using system events to expand the item may even be possible with a action for this part?
This works for me. It is set to work with what items i know are available to my test doc.
    {1 symbol of >2 path items, 2 gradients swatches}
    tell application "Adobe Illustrator"
    activate
set Doc_Ref to the current document
    tell Doc_Ref

    end tell
    end tell
-- List your items to edit
set Symbol_Items to every page item of layer "Opened Symbol"
-- Edit what ever you have here
    set fill color of path item 1 of layer "Opened Symbol" to {gradient:gradient 1}
    set fill color of path item 2 of layer "Opened Symbol" to {gradient:gradient 2}
    -- New group
set New_Group to make new group item at beginning of layer "Opened Symbol"
-- Move edited items into new group
repeat with i from (count of Symbol_Items) to 1 by -1
move (item i of Symbol_Items) to beginning of New_Group
    end repeat

  • What is the best practice for creating master pages and styles with translated text?

I format translated text all the time for my company. I want to create a set of master pages and styles for each language and then import those styles into future translated documents. That way, the formatting can be done quickly and easily.
What are the best practices for doing this? As a company this has been tried in the past, but without success. I'd like to know what other people are doing in this regard.
    Thank you!

I create a master template that is usually void of content, with the exception I define as many of the paragraph styles I believe can/will be used with examples of their use in the body of the document--a style guide for that client. When beginning a new document for that client, I import those styles from the paragraph styles panel.
Exception to this is when in a rush I begin documentation first, then begin new work. Then in the new work, I still pull in those defined paragraph and or object styles via their panels into the new work.
There are times I need new styles. If they have broader applicability than a one-off instance or publication, then I open the style template for that client and import that style(s) from the publication containing the new style(s) and create example paragraphs and usage instructions.
    Take care, Mike

  • Import RPC-style WSDL

    Hello!
I currently implement a RFC -> RFC adapter -> XI -> SOAP adapter -> Web Service scenario. I have imported the WSDL of the Web Service as External Definition into the Integration Repository to use it for the RFC <-> Web Service mapping within the graphical mapping tool.
Until now I only have imported document-style WSDL and there never have been any problems. Now the WSDL is RPC-style which means that the messages described by the <wsdl:types>...</wsdl:types> part should be enclosed by an additonal structure describing the Web Service operation to be executed.
However, in the graphical mapping tool the structure for  the Web Service operation is missing and thus the Web Service call cannot be executed. How can I solve this problem without changing the WSDL or creating an additional XLST or Java mapping?
It seems that there is no problem with the WSDL. When I loaded it with the Web Service Navigator test tool of the SAP Web Application Server the structure describing the Web Service operation has been generated in the request message.
    Regards, Tanja Schättler

    Hi Tanja
Check this note 856597, it even has some examples of WSDL documents and sample SOAP messages that illustrate how one can write an equivalent WSDL in another style.
    A snippet from the note,
"Q: Can I convert an RPC styled WSDL to a document styled WSDL?
A: It is difficult to answer yes or no because the answer depends on the WSDL instance and the implementation of the code that binds the XML instance to some native object. The problem comes from the fact that these two styles describe web services in different layers. The document style WSDL describes how one can bind an XML document to the SOAP message format. In contrast, the RPC style WSDL describes how one can bind an object to the SOAP message format. One can imagine that this works in two steps: first representing the object as an XML document and then binding this XML document to the SOAP message format. How this first step works is controlled by the SOAP encoding name. For the standard encoding specified in the SOAP specification, most objects can be easily described in an equivalent XML schema. Some special objects such as references and arrays must be represented by some special rules and some additional meta information in XML. This implies that these additional attributes and elements must also be described in the XML schema and the document style based proxy must set these values in the instance appropriately.
One must however note that even if one has an equivalent document style WSDL, this does not automatically guarantees the interoperability. Some RPC styled service implementations have significant interoperability problems such as requiring the xsi:type attribute for every element or the SOAP encoding attribute at some particular element. If one has to call such non conformant SOAP service, one must adjust the message accordingly.
Attachment wsdl_style_samples. zip contains some examples of WSDL documents and sample SOAP messages that illustrate how one can write an equivalent WSDL in another style.

  • Importing Preferences/Styles in Captivate 5

I have a template that uses specific styles  and preferences - it's working well, with a few bugs reported to the Bugs line.
However, if I start a project by using "Record new project", the Preferences and Styles revert to the defaults.  Recording this way is a very easy way for me to do my projects - I record a Custom and a Training project, then copy the slides to the main one - but not if I have to go through each slide and change the caption style, etc. each time.
Is there a way I can change the defaults, or force the Record New Project to use the correct Preferences and Styles?  Using the Settings button doesn't help, because the correct Styles haven't been imported, so it doesn't recognize them.

I'm replying to my own question to add some more to it.
I've learned that I can import Styles and Preferences to an existing project, and that I can set the defaults for new projects by changing each default style individually.  However, I don't seem to be able to import a styles set to be used as the default for future projects.
Does anyone know if there is a way to do this?  I have a number of developers who all need to use the same settings, and it would be SO much easier if I could send them Styles and Prefetrences files to be used as the default for future work.

  • Export / Import Page Style.

Is there any way to Export and Import page styles alone?
    Thanks
    null

Pages styles cannot be exported independently of the page object. When a page that uses the style gets exported, it will bring the style along with the page.

  • Stopping Nested style with string

I know this is a dumb question but I can't remember how to do this and I can't find it anywhere!
How do you stop a nested style with a string of text versus a list.
I have a paragraph with the same word that I want to change nested styles off of "bibliography." If I type this in if just keys off any "b" since it just looks at the word as a list.
I thought you surrounded in quotes like any string but that doesn't work. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

If you want just the word 'bibliography' affected, and it's arbitrarily used only once in the paragraph, then you can get away with only one ENSH character. Just trigger the style to switch off through the next 'y'. If you're using CS3 and have no other nested style going on in the paragraph you can loop it so that all occurrences of '[ENSH]bibliography' are affected.

  • How can I apply a new style with a snippet and make DW remove artifacts of the old style?

    Hello,
I am using Dreamweaver CS5 on Windows XP SP3. My problem seems simple but the resolution remains elusive.
Let's say I am editing pasted-in text from MS Word that DW has auto-formatted. I highlight some text and use a snippet to enclose the text in h2.
Instead of deleting the former style and replacing it with h2, DW applies the h2, but copies the old style, enclosing nothing, and bumps it to the next line. If the old style included a paragraph tag, that throws in extra white space. For nothing at all.
Now, this seems like a minor thing, but it's not so minor when you are trying to quickly prepare a large document with various header styles. Having to make dozens of edits that I think should be completely unnecessary becomes a real burden.
Is there a way to enclose a bit of text in a new style with a snippet without having the old style stick around?
Thanks for any and all replies!
    Michael Salmons

Maybe auto-format is not the correct terminology, but DW does interpret MS Word formatting in some way,and in a way I cannot control (well, I can to a limited degree). The term that popped into my head describing this process was automatic formatting.
I don't really want to paste in as text, then I have to touch everything. I mean, I do frequently end up touching everything in a document anyway, but if any decisions can be "automated," I like to at least give it a try.
DW makes mostly good guesses* about Word formatting (*or whatever mechanism translates word formatting to html in DW). Even if it is just a little wrong, it saves me a lot of time. <p><strong> can be converted to <h2> faster than text that only has a CRLF to distinguish it from surrounding text.
I'm not mixing any styles. I control the style absolutely. I would just like to know how to use snippets in a way that truly replaces the Word-suggested tags rather than preserving them for no good reason. Perhaps there is no way to do that, or I so fundamentally misunderstand snippets I am fooling myself.

  • How to call hr_location_api.create_location for different address style with only those fields that belongs specific to  that address style.

How to call hr_location_api.create_location for different address style with only those fields that belongs specific to  that address style. It should decide at run time means at run time it will come to know the type of address style and based on that only the fields which belong to address details mapped to calling hr_location_api.create_location.
    Thanks in advance.

You can create a wrapper package on top of the API (hr_location_api.create_location)
In the wrapper package you set all the values dynamically based on your requirements(say the style and add_line columns are populated on your conditions) and then you call the API.
    Does that not work ?
