Import Tape Problem

I keep having this problem and I'm not at the end of the tape.

Hi(Bonjour)!
What version of FCE, MAC OS, Quicktime ?
What king of material do you capture, standard def DV, HDV ?
May be it's a timecode break. Did you play this tape portion on camcorder itself to see if there is a gap between the last shot and the next one?

  • Importing tape problem

Hi, I'm having the same problem as this guy:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/18162183?tstart=0#18162183?tstart=0
When trying to import from tape, the image on the screen in glitching, but not on the camera view finder. FCP X is then creating hundreds of mini clips that only last like 3 - 4 seconds. I tried deleting preferences file, restarting the program etc.
I'm using snow leopard and a canon xl1. Playback in the camera is good. Never had such problem with FCP 6.0
Any suggestion, besides whipping my hard drive?
    thank you

    Hello,
thank you for replying, but I probably didn't describe the problem properly ...
You suggest dragging a clip from the event into the project and then creating a Still Frame from it.
I cannot do this because iMovie will not import these clips *at all* - i.e., they are not physically present on the Mac although they show up on screen during import.
    Here is what happens:
    - Let's say I have three clips on my Digital Video Tape:
    - the first is a short, "real" scene,
    - the second was generated by pausing the source camcorder and recording this paused frame on the master camcorder for a few seconds
    - the third is another "real" scene.
The resulting DV master tape (which I am working with) plays back properly on the camcorder: scene 1, scene 2 (a paused frame), scene 3.
When importing this into iMovie, I end up with these files in iMovie's event folder:
    "clip-2009-07-02 01;55;37.dv" 34 MB
    "clip-2009-07-02 01;56;10.dv" 0KB <-
    "clip-2009-07-02 05;51;26.dv" 21 MB
I.e, iMovie discards these clips upon import - so there is nothing to generate a still frame from.
So I need to get around the import problem.
Even a third-party tool for importing such "paused still frame" clips from a DV tape would help. I just need to get them onto the Mac HD.

  • How do I capture tape-based media to my external hard drive?  There is only one firewire 800 port on the back of my I mac.  The manual says to import tape footage directly into fcpx, but then I lose my external hard drive.   thanks for your help.

In FCP X How do I capture tape-based media (hdv clips)- which I want to import-to my external hard drive?  There is only one firewire 800 port on the back of my I mac.  The FCPX manual says to import tape footage directly into final cut, which works, but then I lose  my external hard drive    Do I  have to import it into an event, then copy it over to an external hard drive?  On Larry Jordan's tutorial, he has 3 external hard drives that show up on his monitor WHILE he imports his tape based media.  How is that done?  I can only get either the camera to appear OR my external hard drive.   thanks for your help.

Thanks for your response, but that doesn't solve the problem.  Yes, the LaCie hard drive has 2 firewire ports-
I have always done what you suggest (works fine in FCP7), but in FCPX when I do that the camcorder icon
does not appear.  It only shows up when I DIRECTLY import the footage via firewire.  ????

  • Recovery from imported tape media fails and causes DPM management console to crash with ID: 917

    Hi.
I have a newly installed DPM 2012 R2 on a Windows 2012 R2 with a standalone dedicated SQL server which is causing me a bit of a headache right now.
I'm about to restore some files from an imported tape media, the tape is from our previous DPM server (DPM 2010). I have identified the media and cataloged it and i'm able to browse it to choose wich files to restore. But as soon as i try to
finish up a restore job it causes the console to crash.
My server is running just fine with backups and restores from i.e tapes that is backed up by this server - no problem there - but imported is not working.
Below is the message from console when it crashes.
Connection to the DPM service has been lost.
Review the application event log for information about a possible service shutdown. Verify that the following services are not disabled:
                DPM
                DPM Replication Agent

                MSSQL$MSSQLSERVER
                Virtual Disk Service
                Volume Shadow Copy

    Any ideas?

    Hello,
I am having the exact same problem when trying to restore from tape on our secondary DPM server.  I checked the event viewer and found event ID 943 (even though the console crash shows ID 917).  The event viewer error is below:

  • FCP 10.1 Import Tape based media Issue

When I import tape based media in FCP X 10.1 the 'capture' window weirdly flickers between what appears to be the 1st frame on the tape and the one currently being injested.  The media does seem to import correctly, and I'm able to skim the clip once it's finished with import, but I'm nervous to start editing with it in case there is some issue with the way it's being injested.
    Thanks for any help.
    Steve Pustay

    Hey Steve,
I'm having the exact same problem.  For those who can help but need some additional info: I'm capturing from a Sony HVR -M25U HDV deck via Firewire 800 onto a MAC Pro tower running Mavericks.
    also
from a DSR-40 DVcam deck via Firewire 800 onto an IMac also running Mavericks
I've been doing this seamlessly for a few years till 10.1
Additionally, now my "j" and "l" keys are not communicating with either deck.  Again this is since the upgrade.
Anyone with ideas on how to solve this one?
Sorry I couldn't help you Steve.  Maybe this extra detail will get us some help.
    Good Luck
    Tom

  • I am having problems importing some CDs into iTunes on a laptop with Windows 8. Most CDs import without problem. The ones I can't import can be imported into iTunes with Windows 7. Does anybody know why this problem is occurring?

I am having problems importing some CDs into iTunes on a laptop with Windows 8. Most CDs import without problem. The ones I can't import can be imported into iTunes with Windows 7. Does anybody know why this problem is occurring?

First-off, this seems to be a general problem with 10.4 (across all the operating systems of which I am aware).  Unfortunately, I cannot provide a permanent solution but, if you need a quick fix, this will (hopefully) work for you.
For some inexplicable reason, iTunes no longer recognises standard Windows paths.  For example:
    Y:\Music\Buddy Holly\Buddy Holly - Rave On.mp3
The end result is that it will import a playlist with no content.
It will, however, recognise the equivalent Apple paths which look like this:
    file://localhost/Y:/Buddy Holly/Buddy Holly - Rave On.mp3
It is possible to convert your existing playlists using a few basic replace commands in something like Notepad.  In my case, I made some code changes in my music manager and now generate two sets of playslists (one standard and one to accommodate iTunes).
Forgive me foir stating the obvious but please remember to make sure that the disk / path containing your music is accessible when doing the import otherwise you will probably get a blank result.  Note that you can do a bulk import by selecting all the (revised) playlists and dragging them onto the iTunes sidebar.
I am sorry that this is not a "clean" solution but it will work if you are in a bind.  The only alternative of which I am aware is to wait for Apple to fix the problem.

  • Importing tga problem

I have several targa image sequences from a client. FCP (6.0.5) will import some but not others. The only difference I can find is that under "kind" in the get info window some are "tga image" and the others are "adobe photoshop targa file". The latter imports no problem, while the former give an error: "File Error 1 file(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown."
Anyone know what I'm doing wrong or have run into this issue?
FWIW, I checked the fils in photoshop and they all have the same modes. They also all have the same file sequence naming structure.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Actually forgot to explain that the error I mentioned above occurs when I try to import just 1 of the targa files individually. If I try to import a sequence the number of errors changes to match the number of targas in the sequence. Sorry about the miscommunication. For the record, there are no other files inside the sequence folder(s) - just the targas.
Still haven't figured this out yet. Shake, Nuke, After Effects, Photoshop all open/import the files, but FCP will not.

  • Importing - tape vs. hard drives; do drives remove a lot of problems??

I admit I am an infrequent user of FCE (current version 3.5.1) and I think the reason is the difficulties in importing. I have Tom's books, I follow the instructions and suggestions from this forum, but for the life of me, I normally have problems. Using Canon ZR40.
So I am wondering, what is the experience of people that have imported from tape and who have also imported from the newer hard drive cameras? Assuming proper settings for both camera and FCE, do you find that importing from a hard drive camera is: Easier; Without Problems; Just as Prone to Problems?? Would I have a better experience and get off to a better start if I had a drive camera?
(..and am I missing the forum search link? I don't see it; or am I having a bad day?)

I can only repeat that there must be something wrong with your computer or technique as FCE should work perfectly.
As you have not given any details about any of your equipments specs or even FCE it is almost impossible to tell where you are going wrong.
Trash the preferences exactly as described in the link below.
If that doesn't work, completely uninstall FCE as described in the other link and reinstall it.

  • Importing tape with timecode problems??

I've got an HDV tape that looks perfectly normal, can't see any timecode breaks, but FCP seems to think there are and captures the continuous shot into segments - missing a bit of material each time. There are no breaks I can see on the tape, and it runs fine through the camera.
Is there a way to import the tape into FCP such that FCP 'ignores' any timecode breaks?
I tried a capture on-the-run ('now') but FCP does the same thing - break the continuous shot into segments (with gaps between each segment).
    All ears,
    thanks,
    Ben

HDV (Sony Z1U). Tape looks fine, timecode doesn't seem to have a break.
Trying to capture on the fly I'm now getting an error reading:
"Capture was aborted due to lack of incoming data."
Mmmm? And yet everything LOOKS normal and correct. I wonder if it might be the capture cable giving problems here ... ??
    Any ideas along this line?

  • Importing video problem

I just recently made the big jump to using final cut pro. Right off the bat I'm having trouble with importing video. The camcorder connects and imports video fine with Imovie HD, but when i use final cut pro it says that there is no connection in the fire wire port therefore no camcorder to be connected to (but there is!). I'm using a canon hv40 tape camcorder. Some help on fixing this would be much appreciated!

    Hi,
That is unfortunate that you are having those problems with your Camera. I researched online and found that some users were experiencing the same issues with other programs(windows and apple based).
    For instance:
    http://ezinearticles.com/?Work-Around-of-Canon-HV---40-Capture-Problem&id=328432 5
There are several forum threads online that explain how to fix those problems.
    Hopefully this information helps,

  • Import miniDV problems

When I use FCP X to import Digital 8 tapes from my Sony it worked fine.
I've now switched over to my miniDV tapes that were shot on a GL2. I'm using my HV20 to import them. As the import goes a black flash appears every 3-5 seconds and I can see the clips splits in the even like it start/stopped on tape. It will create a 100 of these if I let the capture continue.
When importing same tape and camera into iMovie or FCP 6 it works fine.
If I restart my brand new iMac 27" it will import longer before seeing the black flashes and clip splits, but eventually it will come back.
    Any ideas? Just buggy software?

    Try this:
Locate the individual files you imported with imovie. (Probably open imovie, right click > reveal in finder). Instead of importing the imovie project into FCPX, try dragging the individual movie clips from the finder into FCPX. If imovie does indeed keep the timecode date intact when capturing, this might solve your problem. I think when you go directly from imovie into FCPX, it's using iMovie's "date captured" metadata.

  • Issues importing tapes into FCPX

Hi. I have tried importing some miniDV tapes for the first time into FCPX (latest version). I have had a number of issues:
Tape number 1 - Importing the video directly into an event (rather than creating an archive) seemed to split up the shots on the tape incorrectly, and dropped some frames. Creating a camera archive worked for that tape. However when I tried to import the clips from the newly created archive, FCPX crashed, and I had to open again. This time round, I could import the clips into the event from the archive, and they were split up into shots correctly.
Tape number 2 (which is one long recording without timecode breaks), FCPX split the first minute where some titles dip to black into seperate clips. It should have been captured as one long clip. I decided to try and create an archive again. Second time round, it correctly created an archive with one long clip and I imported into an event!
Tape number 3 - again it split some opening titles which dip to black into seperate clips in the archive. I haven't tried this one a second time yet.
Tape number 4 - creating an archive reached the end of the tape displayiong the 'end of tape' message. When I clicked ok, FCPX crashed. When it opened again, the archive wasn't displayed and I could not open the archive (it appeared greyed out). I am currently trying this one again.
Has anyone got any tips on getting around these problems? I like the camera archive idea, and the way it splits shots up (when appropriate) and logs them according to the recording date and time). I wish you could till it to not split up the clips also. I am worried about how it will cope with my VHS collection, when I connect via a AV-DV adaptor (like the Canopus ADVC55). Will these be split up into seperate clips every time there is a dip to black, or some noise on the picture? Also, will it stop creating the archive after the 3 hour tape has come to an end, or will it keep archiving a blank screen? (in FCP7 there was a limit capture option, so I could tell it to stop after 2hr and 10mins for example).
Sorry there are a lot of questions here! Any advice would be appreciated.

When I capture in Quicktime Player 7 this is the info:
    16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Stereo (L R), 48.000 kHz
    DV, 720 x 576 (768 x 576), Millions
When I import that clip into FCPX, it is playing audio through LEFT and RIGHT channels.
The same clip when captured in FCPX directly (not using a camera archive) also plays audio through both LEFT and RIGHT channels.
    16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Stereo (L R), 48.000 kHz
    DV, 720 x 576 (768 x 576), Millions
When using the camera archive feature in FCPX, there is only sound on the LEFT channel (nothing coming through right speaker). Although this time, the sound is extremely faint even on the LEFT channel - the same clip is fine when captured as above. I also get this faint audio when playing it back in FCP7
    DV, 720 x 576 (768 x 576), Millions
16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Left, 48.000 kHz
16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Unused, 48.000 kHz
I think this is a specific problem with the Camera Archive feature when archiving miniDV tapes. It's a shame, since I've capture 20 already!

  • Import movie problem

    Hi,
I have a new mac, and tried to do my first movie. I know I am doing something wrong, but cant figure out what. I have a sony HD camcorder (HDR-HC3). The firewire connects fine. The blue screen to import comes up fine. I am able to rewind and control the camcorder from iMac. I click Import after entering file name, etc. This is where I get into trouble. The tape moves fine, and it seems like it is importing, but the screen remains blue, couner does not move from 0.00. After I end import, of course my file is empty, and nothing makes it to the computer.
    Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I have the same problem. I haven't used iMovie in a while but nothing has changed except 10.5.x I have 10.5.3 and it suddenly iMovie HD 6.0.3 doesn't work. Same issue as the gentleman previously. I hit import and then the video camera runs fine but the iMovie HD jerks and fits and then the camera stops, and iMovie crashes...
BTW, there is no "manual import" button setting in iMovie Preferences under "import" that I can find. Don't know what you are referring to.... I've read such horror stories about iMovie 08 I wouldn't dare use it... I've made many movies on HD and predecessors, and have a lot of special effects. Is Apple building in obsolescence with 10.5.3?)
Thanks if you have any other suggestions.

  • FCP 7.01 crashes when importing tape

When importing (Control-8) a DV-Tape (HDV), I see the import window as long as I press the switch "Direct". The program crashes immediately, even after re-installing the complete program. I don´t know what else I can do. I had no problems with FC Express before, but now with the full version I´m not able to import my videos at all...
I ereased the prefernece files as described somewhere else, but this did not affect anything.
Since I have to edit a very important video until Sunday evening, I need an urgent help!

Hi Rainer, you are obviously running FCP in German. The button marked "Direkt" on your system is marked "Now" on a FCP system that runs in English.
nsTODimporter is a QuickTime component. It is located at Hard Drive/Library/QuickTime and is installed by cameras that record in the .tod format which is a variation of MPEG 2 developed by JVC.
Before you resort to a clean install, remove that component. You will need an Adminstrator password to fully remove it.
    I now will format C
That's windows terminology. Mac hard drives have names.

  • Imported Tape Broken into Too Many Clips

I tape my movies with a Sony Digital 8 camera, model DCR-TRV103, and import them to my MacBook Pro, using iMovie HD 6. This has been working very well. But one recent event I taped, upon importing, started breaking a long clip from the tape into very many short clips in iMovie, most only a few seconds long, with some just a fraction of a second in length. When the number of clips in iMove exceeded 100, I stopped the importing, even though the tape was less than half way through. I have not had this problem either before or after this one particular tape.
The event I taped was a ride on a tourist railroad, so I was bouncing around a lot. Maybe this threw some kind of errors into the tape? I'm grasping at straws here. Viewing the tape, as it imported into iMovie, it looks just fine, with no irregularities apparent, at the same time that dozens of clips are being populated.
I shot another movie after this one, and had no problems importing it into iMovie. But during this taping, the camera was stationary. Importing this one gave only two clips for an entire 55 minute tape.
    Any ideas?

I have this problem too. I was able to make the situation a little better by cleaning the video heads with a cleaning tape, but the problem still persists. Now, I am having to work around this problem by turning off the option to "start new clip @ scene break" in the import preferences. I then set the maximum clip length to 1 minute. Then I get a series of 1 minute clips that I can then break into scenes in iMovie. Not an optimal situation.
