Import to iMovie from iPhoto QT Parse Error

It's been a while I didn't have any iMovie projects but had a few updates since then. Now, I discovered that I cannot import photos to iMovie (iMovie is 5.0.2, iPhoto is 6.0.6). After trying to trouble shoot for a while here is what I found out;
When I import photos to iPhoto, originals are stored in iPhotoLibrary\Originals\...\LibraryName\filename but files here are aliases only. Thumbnails are stored into iPhotoLibrary\Data\...\LibraryName\filename. When I want to import to iMovie, it requests to open iPhoto before I can see the library but tries to import from iPhotoLibrary\Originals\...\LibraryName\filename which are aliases. Therefore I get a QT parsing error. "... PICT5985.JPG” can’t be imported; QuickTime couldn’t parse it: -2048". I copied the original photos to iPhotoLibrary\Originals\...\LibraryName\filename overwriting the aliases and it worked.
Is there something I am missing? I couldn't remember and figured out if there is any way to set iPhoto to use originals or iMovie to look for the folder where the originals are located?
Thanks.

In iPhoto's Preferences, under Advanced, there is an option to "copy files to iPhoto Library folder when importing to Library." If you have turned this option off, then your Originals folder contains only alias files pointing to the location where you have saved your photos. If you check that box, then future imports will be saved into the iPhoto Library folder, but it will do nothing to replace the existing alias files with the real thing.
If you want to convert your referenced library into a managed one, check out [AliasHerder|http://www.rorohiko.com/downloads.html]. I haven't tried it myself, but others here have reported success.
You can drag and drop files from anywhere into your iMovie project, and they should be imported. But to be able to import from iMovie's convenient Media Browser, you have to use iPhoto for your photos.
Something else is also wrong. This
When I want to import to iMovie, it requests to open iPhoto before I can see the library...
shouldn't happen. I haven't used an alias-based library, but I assume that it should work without you having to locate the source files. It sounds like iPhoto has lost the link to these files and is unable to send them to iMovie. In iPhoto, can you view these photos at full size and open them for editing? If not, that would support my theory.
One way iPhoto could have lost the location of your files would be if you moved or renamed them without using iPhoto. In that case, you'll have to put things back as they were. Or try replacing the alias files with the actual files. If you didn't tamper with iPhoto's files, you may have a damaged database file, which can result from a crash while iPhoto is writing to the database. You can try a rebuild. Hold down the Option and Command keys while launching iPhoto. Select the first 3 options in the dialog box, then rebuild.
One last question: Is there a reason why you are using iMovie 5 with iPhoto 6? Why not upgrade iMovie (and any other iLife '06 app) to match iPhoto? While I don't think that is causing your problem, it seems to be an extra variable with your setup.
Regards.

  • Importing to iMovie from iPhoto - doesn't work!!!

    hello
i don't know if any one had this issue and if its something that i have been doing incorrectly,
i have alot of movies on my iphoto and tried to upload to imovie.
    the program does not respond!
i tried uploading from the hard drive and got the same result.
the only time the imovie actually respond is when i upload directly from my camera
i made sure the files name and type are correct and used the instructions, but its still will not work!
i hope that someone can help me!
    thank you

i have alot of movies on my iphoto and tried to upload to imovie.
    the program does not respond!
iPhoto only requires a movie be playback compatible for it to be imported. iMovie requires a file be "edit" compatible before it will import the file at the "Finder" level.
i tried uploading from the hard drive and got the same result.

Same result for the same reason. Files imported by the Finder must already be "edit" compatibile with iMovie '08. Files which are imported directly from a camcorder (with the exception of DV) have to be "converted" to become "edit" compatible with iMovie '08. The "Import from Camera" option automatically converts files imported from recognized devices while the import of files via the Finder does not.
Basically, if a file is not DV, AIC, Motion-JPEG, Photo-JPEG, MPEG-4, or H.264 along with supported audio compression formats it will not be accepted/imported by iMovie '08. Either you import the files directly from the recording device (or make the application think it is doing so) or you convert them manually. To know what is best/easiest for you to do, we would first have to know what kind of files (i.e., compression formats) we are dealing with here.

  • Importing into iMovie from iPhoto

I am trying to create a movie on iMovie using still photos and video clips that are in iPhoto. Most of the clips automatically appeared in events, except for two that I need. I have no idea how to get these videos into iMovie and I have tried everything from trying to drag it into iMovie to saving it to my desktop and then importing it into iMovie. Nothing works... I am going crazy. Please help:)

    Hey there guys
i just did brought some video into imovie. This is what U do (ilife 09):
I had video on my iphone. I had all video go straight to iphoto. Click on this video you want (More then two and it will take over 30min to download to imovie, I take ten).
Go to file then Export. Another box will come "Export photo" Look down for the word "Kind" make sure "Original" is selected. Hit Export at the bottom. Now your finder Window will come up, now name the movie and make sure to keep the file ext. name "mov". save it to your desk top or file.
Right click and open it in imovie. (I would first have imovie already open) After that imovie will open it up.
I've edited ten mimi movies from a b-day party from saturday. Hit me back if u have any problems, because I did down load the latest download and I didn't have any problem getting my iphone video into imovie. You would think there would be a download button in i movie right along with flicker and facebook, to go directly yo imovie.
    Hope that helps

  • IMovie doesn't import all movies from iPhoto - at least one solution

I noticed that iMovie 08 imported my movies from iPhoto, but strangely not all of them. A quick search of the support forums indicated many others were having the same issue.
After comparing file attributes of movies that were importing successfully into iMovie versus movies that didn't show up, I found that a rogue character ("&") was preventing iMovie from importing the file properly.
Renaming the title in iPhoto does not resolve the issue, since the file name (in Finder) remains the same. However, if I make a copy of that file outside of the iPhoto Library, rename it in Finder, then re-import it back into iPhoto, then iMovie will see it. I didn't rename the movie file inside of the iPhoto Library for fear of corrupting the library structure.
I found this to work at least with my .avi files. I still have the same issue as everyone else with iMovie not importing .mpg files that play properly in iPhoto.

Good thinking! The only way to change the filename in iPhoto is to export the movie file, import it back in, copy over comments, keywords from the old to the new movie, and then delete the old movie.

  • Can't import .mov file from iphoto

Can anyone tell me why I can't import an .mov file into imovie from iphoto. The help manual says I should be able to but. when I try, the .mov files on the import window are greyed out and not selectable. I thought imovie played this type of file.

MOV files are compatible with iMovie '08 if, and only if, both the audio and video compression formats are "edit" compatible with iMovie '08 and the MOV file container does not contain incompatible extraneous tracks (e.g. a "Tween" track). Kodak, for instance, stores its video clips as MPEG-4 video (compatible with iMovie '08) and µ-Law 2:1 compressed audio (which is not). In this case, all you would need to do would be to convert the µ-Law compressed audio to a compatible compression format like AAC (MPEG-4 audio). Another example would be a slideshow made in iPhoto. In this case a "Tween" track is used to transition between slides but is never removed once the transition is applied and results are re-saved in the MOV container. If you delete or strip out this track, the file then becomes compatible with iMovie '08.

  • Can't import some photos from iPhoto to iPad

I can't import some jpg from iPhoto to iPad. It gives me an error message that the photo can't be displayed on an iPad. There also doesn't seem to be a way to reformat them in iPhoto. They are just jpegs downloaded from a digital camera.

Deleting the photo cache from the computer and then re-trying the photo sync has worked for some people - the location of the cache, and how to delete it, is described on this page

  • I don't want to import video clips from iPhoto!

iMovie automatically imports video clips from iPhoto, and I don't need or want this to be done. I don't want to delete or move those clips from iPhoto, so is there a way to prevent the automatic transfer?

Go to your Hotmail account on the web (NOT in mail), make a new folder (or folders) for the mail you want to keep and move the messages into it.
Mail (and all other email clients) will download all messages in the inbox unless previously downloaded. That means downloaded with the client you are attaching now.
Until that is done do not setup the account in mail.

  • How do I export a video clip to iMovie from iPhoto?

My video clips and photos were imported from my iPhone 5 to iPhoto on my macbook pro.  Using iMovie, I can import the photos from iPhoto but am unable to import the video clips from iPhoto into iMovie.
Is there a way that this can be done?

How are you trying to import from iPhoto to iMovie? The movies in your iPhoto Library should appear in iMovie in the Event Library in the section for your system drive as event "iPhoto Videos".
Here the videos from your iPhoto library should be shown, that you last opened in iPhoto; for example with my version of iMovie (9.0.8) the event library looks like this:
Don't you see the videos there? What is your iPhoto version and iMovie version?
As a workaround to import to iMovie you can always select the video in iPhoto and use "File > Reveal in Finder" to show the movie file and then import to iMovie using the Finder. Caution: When importing from the iPhoto library using the Finder, be sure to import to iMovie using the option "Copy files", not "Move files". Otherwise they will vanish from your iPhoto library.

    MPR

When you watch on your Mac, it is at or near HD 1920x1080 pixels (about 2 megapixels), depending on the resolution of your screen. Most photos today are 5 megapixels or greater, depending on your camera, but anything over 2 megapixels must be reduced when put in a video.
When you create a DVD, you must further reduce it to 640x480, standard definition. This is about 0.3 megapixels. iDVD will do this for you.
You can fix by creating an HD movie in iMovie. You can Share this using Share/Export Using QuickTime to an MP4 container using the h.264 codec. You can then put this movie on your PS3 using a USB thumb drive.
That should give you good resolution.
(NEVER MIND, YOU SAID PS2 not PS3, my apologies)

  • , how do I import a book from Iphoto on my old computerPower book G4 to my new MacBook pro?

how do I import a book from Iphoto on my old computerPower book G4 to my new MacBook pro?

I just tried to move my old iPhoto Library from the G4 to a new Macbook. The G4 and files were very old, from 2001.
When I opened Iphoto for the first time, it said it needed to "upgrade" the library", so I selected OK. It gave a message that this could take an hour or longer with a lot of photos -- I have around 9,000 stored so I figured it would take awhile.
It finished in about 3 minutes, but there were no photos or albums to be found.
I checked on the drive and iPhoto has converted the old library files and photo files to a "package" called "iphoto library" that has no file extension.
If I show package contents, I can see a whole raft of new files, folders etc. I can see a file in there called "library6.iphoto" Some folders appear to be organized by years, if I dig down in the folders, all the photos appear to still be present. The general size of the "package" file is almost identical to the old folder, around 25.3 megabytes, so it seems all the photos and information is there, but its just not reading it.
Now IPhoto still says " to begin, connect a camera, drag photos to iPhoto, or import a file.....
I downloaded the "library manager" file and pointed it at the "iphoto library" file but it does not even see it.
Grrr... what can I do to recover this.

  • I am trying to import my photos from iphoto 11   into Aperture v3.0

I am trying to import my photos from iphoto 11 v9.4.3  into Aperture v3.0. When I select import I get a message saying Aperture cannot import libraries from version earlier that iphoto 7.1.5 and tells me to upgrade to a lter version of iphoto. Advice ?

I am on MAC OS X Version 10.8.5
Is Aperture 3.0 still correct or have you upgraded to Aperture 3.4.5? Only Aperture 3.4.5 can import iPhoto 9.4.3 libraries.
As I said above, you can download the updater for Aperture here:
