Import Tunes format

I'm new to iTunes and am trying to figure out how best to import tunes into iTunes for use in an ipod and to use iTunes for music management.
I have music on my computer in .wav and .mp3 format. When I connected my ipod I noticed that iTunes placed the tunes into the ipod in the same format as is on the computer with no compression. I know that iTunes simply marks the tunes as a reference so it knows where to go to import into ipod. But if the tunes are in a uncompressed format like .wav then the tunes will quickly fill up my ipod. The 170 tunes nearly filled up half the 8 gig hardrive on the ipod. I noticed when I copied a CD using iTunes onto my computers hard drive it did use the AAC encorder as selected in iTunes, thus compressing the file. Do I need to compress all my .wav files into mp3 or some other format and then import them into the ipod using iTunes. Does iTunes have a conversion utility to compress the files already on my computer like it did the CD that I imported?

Unless you have an Pod shuffle, if you want to get the maximum number on then yes you do. The iPod shuffle (probably because of it's limited capacity) has the option to "Convert higher bit rate songs to 128 kbps AAC". This option not available for any other model iPod. For the larger iPods the files have to be converted in iTunes first or indeed have to have been imported in a compressed format prior to transfer.

Yes, you can convert songs in your iTunes library to another format. When you convert a song in iTunes it will be converted to the format that you have set to import your CDs in. Converting creates a second copy of the song in the format you have chosen which gives you the opportunity to either keep or delete the original. You can get details on these pages:

iTunes will not assign track names to items imported from vinyl. You will have to label the files yourself in the Get Info window. As long as you give all the tracks on an album the same album information and the same artist information they should group together. if the artists differ then you need to give all the tracks one common album artist (often "Various Artists")in addition to individual track artist.

What update are you referring to? If you do a search for "Kodak" in the iPhoto community you'll find numerous posts regarding problems with Kodak cameras.
So far there's no known fix. The best workaround is to use a card reader with the memory card of the camera.

to convert wmv and wma into Mac-friendly formats, you need the PlayerPro from

The other versions are only needed, if you want to convert TO wmv.
There're are orther converters avail, some for free, but wmv is a Microsoft-owned format, which costs licences.

Can't be done without stripping the DRM. That is illegal, and can't be discussed in this forum. If you have no DRM that's one thing. There are several services that will convert the book format. I've found a few on Google.

Importing raw format pics to PSE 12

Am having trouble importing raw format pics from Canon 70D to PSE 12. Was told PSE 12 had all necessary software for that. When try to download, message telling me that PSE 12 does not support my camera or format type. Do I need to save my photos with different extension than cr2before importing? Do I need to download PNG or updated software from Adobe site? Thanks for any help. Rob

PSE12 ships with ACR8.0/8.1. Support for the 70D was in ACR8.2. Run Help> Updates, this updates to ACR8.4 and you will have 70D support.

Import jpeg formatted photos from files

Hi there,
I am a new MacBook Pro owner with Leopard 10.5.1 and iLife 08. Absolutely impressed by the system, but a bit disappointed that importing JPEG formatted photos from files sometimes results in garbled photos in iPhoto and Aperture, even though the originals are simply fine. Tried to used other software like GIMP, but the issue remains.
Is this a known Mac OS X problem? If so, does anyone have a solution for it?
I would be eternally grateful for any help I can get on the isue.

Generally all you need to do is fill in an appropriate Album Artist, though for compilations you should also set the part of a compilation flag to yes. For more details see my article on Grouping Tracks Into Albums, in particular the topic One album, too many covers.

What version of iPhoto?
As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
Post back with the result.

When trying to transfer digital files from my camera I get the following message.
file could not be imported unrecognized format. also clicking on a photo in an album produces a black screen on my computer.

Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

Best route is to use the Kind, iCloud Download and iCloud Status fields in your library to see exactly what is going on. Often it is worthwhile to turn iTunes Match off, convert suspect Songs to AAC using the iTunes capability, remove non-AAC version (post backup), turn iTunes Match on and allow the 3-Step process to run to completion.
There are restrictions on the type and nature of Song files that iTunes Match is able to work with - it may be that several of your Song files do not fall within the supported range but it is certainly worth trying the steps outlined above.

Imported tunes dont appear in itunes until i restart.

often , when i import tunes it goes through the motions and brings up the little box about processing each mp3.
but the mp3's are no where to be found until i quit and restart.
its quite basic but seems to be getting worse.
i have about 9000 tunes in my library, and the tunes i'm importing have no protection and are infact copied from my other itunes library folder on another machine.

That is the normal behaviour. iTunes must be running for you to be able to access the media stored there with the Apple TV.

If you mean Commercial DVDs that are Copyright Protected... then that is illegal and Cannot be discussed here.
