Import VHS-C with a sony camcorder

I am trying to import VHS-C tapes into iMovie using a VCR and passing through my Sony TRV-17.
I am able to do this but when I play it back in iMovie there are many breaks in the video. I get a blank grey screen that keeps popping up while the sound continues to play without interuption. I have played the very same VHS-C tape in the VCR while viewing it on a TV and it plays perfectly.
I tried a Canon Optura 600 and did not have any luck at all. Is there something I am missing? How do I do this?

Here is an update for anyone who is having trouble while using the same equipment......
I have a Sony TRV17 camcorder that I was using to "pass through" video into iMovie from a VHS-C tape playing in my Sony SLV N750 VCR. This setup was not working on some of my tapes giving me 1 second breaks in the video. NOTE.. the VHS-C tapes played fine on the TV with my Sony camcorder.
As a last resort I borrowed a JVC HR-VP77OU VCR and my problem went away. This confuses me because the Sony VCR played the tapes perfectly on the TV so I did not think to try another VCR. I was thinking that my problem was the cord from the camcorder to the VCR or the jack itself on the camcorder.
I am just glad it is working properly now. Thank you all for your input on this!!!

HOW CAN I DOWNLOAD AND VIEW THE MOVIES I HAVE MADE WITH MY SONY CAMCORDER HDR-XR550VE?

Thanks for being so helpful. I chased up the web-link but was not sure it would work with .cpi, so didn't opt to buy it.
Then I went on to the Sony support page and found this - which works fine, and has very clear instructions.

  • Possible to import VHS?

New to imac and would like to get all my imports into imovie. How can I (if I can) import VHS and older model Sony camcorder tapes? The camcorder does not link up when plugged in.

To get your VHS video into iMovie, look at the Canopus ADVC300. Audio and Video go in, FireWire comes out. It also comes with a nice Macintosh application that works flawlessly with iMovie 06 and iDVD 08 (not sure about iMovie 08).
The program that comes with the ADVC300 has some nice filters that can improve video and audio of the source material. The ADVC300 will take Audio and Video from any source and convert it to FireWire (iMovie 06 will treat it like a camera).

  • Importing VHS into iMovie - Communication Error

    Hi
I have just got a new iMac with iLife 08.
I am trying to import VHS tapes through a Canon camcorder into iMovie. I have done this many times before using Final Cut Pro on my old computer. My old FCP isn't compatible with OSX 10.5 so I have to use iMovie for the first time.
My problem is when I connect everything up, I get a 'communication error'. I can play the VHS and see it playing on the camcorder but it won't play on the import window in iMovie. i have tried importing it anyway and it does capture a couple of seconds and then stops.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks.

I have the same problem, used the info from the above link....
Live import workaround #2: Put a tape in the camcorder and put it into CAMERA mode. Launch iMovie HD 6.0.2 -- its import mode should show the live feed from the camcorder. Remove the tape -- iMovie HD should continue to show and import live feed from the camcorder. The drawback with this approach is that it produces wear and tear to the camcorder. If you keep the tape in the camcorder, it may also go into standby mode if the tape is paused.....
But then switch from camera to play (VCR) on my canon MV500i

  • Importing VHS video through digital camera

I am importing VHS video through my Sony camera (TRV22) to imovie.  For some reason it the screen will go blue for a few seconds then the picture will come back.  I was doing this on a older power pc mac and imovie would just stop recording.  On my new imac it doesn't stop recording but the screen goes blue.    Has this happened to anyone else and maybe know what is causing it?  Should I try a different way of video transfer with some other software?  Thanks for any help you can give me.

    Two possible causes:
    Faulty or badly connected cables
    You are not using Firewire

  • I run Final Cut Express 4.0.1; I shoot with a Sony HDR-CX260V. How do I import from the camera directly to Final Cut, without having to go through the intermediate step of using iMovie?

    I use Final Cut Express 4.0.1; I shoot with a Sony HDR-CX260V.
How do I import from camera to Final Cut without going through the intermediate step of using iMovie?

If you shoot in one of the following modes you should be able to Log & Transfer directly into FCE:
HD:  1920x1080/60i (FX or FH mode)
HD:  1440x1080/60i (HQ or LP mode)
    SD:  720x480/60i
1080/60p (PS mode) seems to be the default mode in your camcorder.  FCE only supports progressive video in 720p50 or 720p60.   That's probably why you have had to import via iMovie.
It would be better to upgrade to Final Cut Pro X, the version currently supported.  FCE was discontinued over 18 months ago and is not supported on Lion or Mountain Lion.

  • VHS to DV tapes...problem with new  Sony camcorders

I had a nice Sony miniDV camcorder, the DCR HC 30. Worked great to record almost all of my VHS tapes to DV, which I am using to created my iMovies. The camcorder worked fine in this mode. It then had a problem with regular recording, capturing the audio, but not video. Known problem to Sony, who repaired the camcorder at no cost. It worked great again, but the last time I went to record from my VHS tape, it worked for an hour, and then the touch-screen menu failed to respond to touch. (Another story).
I also have a newer Sony camcorder, the DCR HC 26. Connected it to the VCR to record from the VHS tape. I then discovered that this camcorder will allow recording FROM the camcorder TO the VCR with the AV connector, but if I want to record FROM the VCR, it will only work using the DV connector into an iLink port (Firewire).
I went to the 'Sony Style' store (yes,Palo Alto has everything!) and the guy first insisted it could be done with the new HC 38 and 48, but after he actually read the manuals, it was the same as the HC26: must have a Firewire port on the VCR. How dumb is that? How many of us have all these old VHS tapes, probably old VCRs too, and none of the old ones will have FireWire ports!
I have always recommended copying VHS footage to DV tapes, and now I am not going to be able to do that unless I get a converter. Seems a bit expensive for just the few VHS tapes that I forgot to convert previously.
I tried to see if the HC 30 can be repaired again....Sony wants $211 just to check it out. I can buy a new camcorder for $320 so it doesn't seem worth it unless I can connect the touch-screen failure with the problem with video recording that was supposedly corrected.
May have to get a converter.....last resort is another old camcorder Sony TRV something. It is on its last legs, but maybe it could work for a few hours more!
Wanted to let it be known that direct recording from an old VCR to new Sony miniDV cannot be done.

Hi tilman - yes - bottom line is not to discard an old vidcam with analogue-in when buying its 'higher-speced(?!) replacement - although that doesn't help Beverly with her problem.
There must be large numbers of second-hand cams with that function being sold as people rush to buy DVD vidcams etc, so it will be worth looking out for a good cheap one.
It seems that soon the only mini-DV cams will be higher-end models, some of which, being larger, have much reduced portability. Ah! Progress!

  • Can't Import my Movies from my TRV520 Sony Camcorder

    Hello,
I recently installed iMovie '08 to my iMac G5 and was trying to import some movies I have in Hi8 cassettes using my TRV520 Sony Camcorder. I have no problem controlling the camera from iMovie '08 (like rewinding, forwarding and stopping), but when I hate play in iMovie the movies plays in camcorder screen but not in iMovie screen instead I just see a blue screen. Same thing happens when I try to import the movie, I only see the blue screen and nothing imports. I went back to my iMovie '06 (the earlier version) I was able to see the movie and import. I tried this also in my MacBook pro and the result was the same can't import movie in iMovie '08.
Is this mean that iMovie '08 does not support my camera? Does anyone else have this problem? Is there a way for me to make my camcorder work in iMovie '08? What should I do?
    I really appreciate your suggestions.
    Thanks,
    Omar

When I connect the camera to the computer it does not automatically open iMovie.
Was actually asking if plugging in the camera, turning it on (in the VTR mode for tape capture), and then opening iMovie '08 automatically recognized the camcorder and opened the "camera import" window. Some have reported this workflow was more successful in ensuring the camcorder was properly recognized.
When iMovie was open I clicked on the import import button.
Did this workflow get the iMovie '08 "camera import" window to recognized the camcorder "by name?"
I could not open or play movie in my computer but when I use the controls in iMovie it plays and stops movie in my camera.
Are you using the "Automatic" or the "Manual" setting? (I prefer "Manual" since I don't import every clip/file for editing.) In this mode, you use the "controls" in the "camera import" window to rewind/fast forward and start/stop playback of the tape in the import preview window. When you want to "capture" something, you just press the "import" button to begin capture and and the "stop" button to stop capturing a segment/clip. As soon as you stop, the captured clip/segment should be save and the thumbnails created. You then repeat this procedure until you have "captured" all of the files you want. Have never used it, but believe/assume the "Automatic" mode should automatically rewind your entire tape, place it in the play mode, and proceed to capture all clips contained on the tape. In any case, I had no problem capturing using the set up and manual workflow with my TRV520.

  • Importing Video from Sony Camcorder

    Hi everyone!
I ve got: the right camcorder (Sony DCR-PC2E), the right cable (IEEE 1394) and the PB G4 with IMovie 4. How can I import the data?
Everything ist plugged on, the camera runs in the playermodus but the PB isnt able to detect it.
    my questions are:
1- is the camera supposed to mount as a extra volume on the desktop (it does not)
2- do i need a special recording program (witch one?)
3- does it only work with IMovie HD ( I have'nt)
4- are there different types of this cables? ( I am not quite sure if it fits well, it fits so loose)
    thanks for answering!

  • Is a Sony camcorder High Def model SR11 compatible with Mac?

Now I have another question...I just bought a Sony camcorder HD SR11 (High Definition)...via email through BestBuy and I was told that I would not be able to import my movies to my IMac using iMovie because Sony's software does not support Mac so they told me to buy Adobe Premier Elements 4.....so I did..I have not tried it yet because I have not received the camcorder but I do not want to open it and pay a restocking fee if it is not going to work.....Is it going to work or should I just exchange the camcorder for another one that is compatible with Mac...and if so any brands I should keep in mind??????

i too just bought this camera.
iMovie doesn't see the camera? everyone on these forums says it does though, any ideas why mine wouldn't. I'm not really familiar with iMovie as i use FCP but... " command i" should recognize the camera should it not. it's in USB mode on the camera.
    iMovie 8 updated latest
Dual Quad Core 3 Ghz Intel
also running FCP Studio2 which doesn't recognize usb cameras
i thought buying a hard drive camcorder would eliminate the hassle of tape. so far not so good!!!

  • Cannot import videos from a sony camcorder.

cannot import videos from a sony camcorder.

Hi cape_surfers, and a warm welcome to the forums!
UPDATE1: About the MPEG-2 component included with iMovie ‘08
UPDATE2: After raising a stink, I figured that I’d spend a little more time trying to figure out how to make my Handycam work with native iMovie ‘08. Turns out that you have to turn on the camera, wait for OS X pick it up as a USB storage device, and then hang tight for three or four minutes until iMovie detects that your USB storage device is actually a camcorder, and presents the import dialog. I’m glad that I can import native MPEG-2, but am somewhat puzzled by the delay.

  • How do I import mpg files made by an old Sony camcorder into iMovie 11?

How do I import mpg files made by an old Sony camcorder into iMovie 11?

I had the same problem. Here is a very easy solution that worked for me.
1- Open the .mpg video with QuickTime Player
2-Go to file/export/ and pick the "Ipad,Iphone,Ipod Touch & AppleTV" option
3-Save your movie with the option "ipod touch &iphone 3GS" picked
4-Confirm by choosing folder of choice to save it in
Now this new version of the movie should be able to be read in imovies.
    Hope that helps!
    Good luck.

  • Cannot import Sony Camcorder latest HDR-TD20 3D digital camcorder videos onto iPhoto

hi, i just bought the latest Sony camcorder HDR-TD20.  when connecting the camcorder to iMac/iPhoto,  iPhoto can only recognize the photos i took in the camcorder, but didn't recognize or detect any of the videos I recorded on the camcorder.  i believe they're in AVCHD files...
can any one let me know whether there's a new driver that needs to update iPhoto in order for iPhoto to recognize these video files?
iMovie however, seems to recognize the movies and is able to import there...  but i realy would like to keep all photos and videos in one place - i.e., iPhoto

    iPhoto doesn't work with AVCHD.
If you're shooting AVCHD then you are shooting to edit. So, shoot, process in iMovie, export as a .mov and import that to iPhoto.
If you're not shooting to edit then don't shoot AVCHD.

  • Need best settings to transfer S-VHS video with Sony DVMC-DA1

I need to transfer around 3 hours of footage and need to get the best possible import setting for this video and audio.  Anamorphic looks too distorted so I want to keep everything like the original 4:3 footage.  I am using a non-controllable Sony DVMC-DA1, which works fine, but I am not sure what to set my import setting at.  Any advice from anyone that has gotten good results from a Sony DVMC-DA1 would be much apprciated! I plan to use all this footage in FCPX for editing (cannot import with the Sony DVMC-DA1 in FCPX, it sees it but wil not let me capture anything).

Using the DVMC-DA1 converter, there really is only one correct choice.
Go to the menu Final Cut Pro, and select Easy Set Up . . .
When the Easy Set Up Pane opens, select DV-NTSC:
Create a new sequence by going to the menu File > New > Sequence.
Then go to the menu File > Log and Capture.
When the Log and Capture window opens, in the upper right click on the Capture Settings Tab and select Device Control: Non-Controllable Device
Now manually put the VHS into play, and click the capture Now button.
