Import video only grabs first 1.9 seconds

First...I am newly back to Apple from the late 90's, I missed her so. Now...
I am using an older Sony Hi8 camcorder (borrowed to digitize an old tape of my daughter), trying to import into iMovie '08. The camcorder has firewire (which I found odd for a Hi8) and USB streaming, which I've never used before. I am using the FireWire for now. The camera is seen, iMovie's import dialog pops up and seems to work.
When I set it to Automatic it rewinds and imports 1.9 seconds then stops and rewinds. The clip has a few frames of random colour blocks and then blue.
I thought it might be because the first couple seconds of the tape were blank, so I deleted that and tried manual...
When I set it to Manual starting a second or so into actual video, it starts the import, runs the entire tape through for 2 hours, after it stops there is still a 1.9 sec. clip, which has a few frames of random colour blocks and then blue.
Any thoughts anyone?

Any thoughts anyone?
It's only a personal opinion, but I believe that in an effort to support so many formats and so many camcorders by different manufacturers, that both the import and export modules in iMovie '08 are a bit "buggy" and will likely remain so until all of the kinks get worked out. (Which I in fact do think will eventually happen.) However, as a member of the church of the "here and now," I am more interested in what works "here and now" and not what will work at a later time. To achieve those goals, would recommend either using the more stable "capture/import" option available in iMovie '06 or use of a dedicated capture utility like Vidi. Since these work flows are more "contemporaneous" with respect to the Digital8/Hi8 camcorder you borrowed, I suspect they will work more as you expect them to in your current situation and once copied to a hard drive can easily be imported to iMovie '08 as a normal file at the "Finder" level.

  • Video only plays for a few seconds, then freezes

    The video, which I got from the apple website, plays fine in iTunes but once I upload it to the iPod it will only play for a few seconds before freezing and becoming nonresponsive. Is this a software problem? Anyone know of a solution? Thanks.

    Or you can follow these instructions.... (adopted from btabz)
    Here are more detailed instructions on how to go back to 1.0, espescially if you bought your iPod in the last couple of months and it came with 1.1.
    First, please download the older version of the iPod Updater here...
    http://appldnld.m7z.net/content.info.apple.com/iPod/ww/win/061-2225.20051128.PDW nw/iPodSetup.exe
    Now install that updater and restart your computer.
    Now open the iPod updater (Start-->all programs-->iPod and find the iPod updater you just installed
    Open the iPod Updater and connect your iPod. With that older version of the iPod updater you just installed, restore your iPod by clicking restore.
    The iPod will restore and go back to software version 1.0. Now reload everything back into iTunes.
    If you don't want to restore, see this...

  • Video only plays for a few seconds, no sound, ALL BROWSERS

    I have having that notorious problem that seems to originate from sometime in 2008. I found no recent reference to it, but that's irrelevant.
    I have no sound in youtube/megavideo/any flash, and the video will only play for 2-3 seconds. This is the same for IE, and Opera.
    Uninstalling via Adobes uninstallation tool and then reinstalling has not fixed this issue. I do not have Realplayer on this system, that I am aware. I am outof ideas. I am using Windows XP SP3, if any other information is relevant I'll post it.

    Hi, well it sounds like something is certainly conflicting but exactly what can't be determined at this point. Confirming that you have the correct Flash Player files Installed would be the first thing to check. Go to C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash  Open Flash and post back all files listed. NPSWF file(s) will need a right click and then click on Properties to obtain the version number(s).
    Using IE, check in all add ons for Shockwave Flash Object...ActiveX Control..Flash10h.ocx. It should be listed that way and Enabled. It may include the vs # 10.1.53.64.
    Using FF, check for the SWF vs 10.1.53.64 plug-in and it should be listed that way and Enabled.

  • [Zen Vision:M] videos only playing first 8 seco

    I just got my Z Vision:M today, when I try to play videos that I transfered to the player, the videos only play the first 8 seconds. I updated to the newest version of the firmware and am still getting this problem. How can I fix this? Thanks.

    Since you have had the player for a few years you may need to replace the battery. Also having it sit for a looong time without charging it does not help keep the battery in shape.http://www.batteryuni'versity.com/parttwo-34.htm Slipping the tip of a safety pin into the reset hole while the adapter is attached (difficult but doable). Does the charging icon show it as charging while connected? BTW 3 hours is not enough time to charge when it has sat dead for a while.. If it shows that it is charging power it down & leave it til the blue light by the power switch stops pulsing & the charging icon stops blinking.

  • Best way to import videos only for nested folders?

    I have a bunch of nested folders like this
    TOP LEVEL
    -> Day 1
    ->->Videos
    ->->Photos
    -> Day 2
    ->->Videos
    ->->Photos
    Day 69...
    Now I can't just choose import on the top level, because I don't want to import any of the photos.
    I don't want to click on each individual videos folder because I'm afraid that I will miss one along the way.
    What is the most organized way to import this?
    Also, would you recommend having all the Days as one big event, or each separate event?
    Thanks!

    Russ's suggestion is probably the easiest to implement - and if you use external media you won't incur in much hard drive space penalty for it.
    If you really want to import just the video and not the audio, here is a small shell script that you may use to replicate the structure of your folders, using symlinks, and omitting the photos file. It assumes only one level down.
    You could copy and paste the text below to a file, replacing the two occurences of <path-of-top-folder> with the actual path of that folder, make the file executable and run it in Terminal.
    (a similar thing could probably be achieved with a little applescript or perhaps automator, as well)
    Note: I tested this in a small example, and it worked for me, but there is no guarantee, of course; but since the script below only creates some folders and symlinks, it is nondestructive, at least. At the end you should have at the same level as the original a "videos-only" folder replicating the structure of the videos using symlinks (no copied media).
    Here is the script:

  • IPhoto stalls out importing videos only - doesn't make it to "finish import"

    Problem for the last 6 months - pretty sure when I upgraded to Mavericks.  Tried everything as I am a bit of a problem solver with this kind of thing but I can no longer try.
    My system:
    MacPro Early 2009
    2x2.66 Ghz Quad Core Intel Xeon
    16GB RAM
    MacOS 10.9.4
    iPhoto 9.5.1
    all current.
    It started about 6-8 months ago when I tried importing a batch of photos and it did the spinning wheel of death somewhere in the middle.  other days, it wouldn't do it at all.  I finally figured out that it was stalling out on video imports only.  These are videos taken only from my iPhone 5 running current software (always current).  So upon isolating the issue - commanding the iPhoto to import a sample 11 second video - iPhoto imports the video - then immediately stalls before it makes it to "finishing import" - it looks like this with a spinning wheel of death for eternity until I force quit.
    Upon re-opening of the program, I get the following prompt.
    If I say yes, then it goes through that whole process again and I have to force quit.  If I say no - I get the following prompt.
    If I open that folder - there is the movie file in its entirety and it plays fully and completely if I open it in QT player.  No problems at all.
    So then I decided to try importing a video from SOMEONE ELSE'S iPhone 5 to see if it was my PHONE that was the problem.  But the same thing happened.  Then I tried using someone else's computer using the exact same software but it is a MacBook Pro.  And this worked no problem - so my phone is able to have photos imported into iPhoto, but it's not on my computer.
    I rebuilt the iPhoto library using the command+option on opening.  I repaired permissions on the MacHD.  I tossed the preference files in the /Library/Preferences for iPhoto.  I restarted, rebuilt and retried.
    Nothing works.  I created a new iPhoto library on an external drive in the hopes that maybe my iPhoto Library had become corrupted. Still didn't want to import.
    Image Capture brings all things in but keeps them isolated from iPhoto so not the best scenario since I want to keep all of them in folders on iPhoto.
    Nothing seems to work.
    Can anyone think of anything that I have NOT tried, and/or anything I can do to get my videos from my iPhone into iPhoto?  I know its not the ideal software program anymore, but I would like to be able to at the very least have them as part of the library so that I can get them off my phone in case something were to happen with my phone!
    Thanks in advance...
    Tim

    Try reinstall then.
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
    2. Download it from the App Store to reinstall It's on your Purchases List* there.
    For older versions that have been installed from Disk you'll need these additional steps:
    2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
    2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 or later they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
    A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
    If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
    If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
    *Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4928
    One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
    iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

  • ITunes crashes when importing video (only)

    I'm running 6.0.1, and have a new iPod. I wanted to use my g4 powerbook (1.33 MHz, 512 MB RAM, OS X Tiger 10.4.3) as my video library, and use my PC for my existing 350 GB music library. However, iTunes hangs with the beachball when I add any video (mpeg4 or h.264). The beach ball shows up for 2-3 seconds, and then iTunes closes, leaving me with an error report dialog box. Adding music to my library works fine, and the video files I'm using have added to my PC iTunes library and iPod with no issues at all. I've uninstalled iTunes and quicktime and reinstalled both (QT then iTunes) with no luck fixing the problem. This is SO frustrating, as I want to update my videos, iCal, address book, email all from my powerbook, and simply use my PC for music. I can't do this and no topics anywhere online seem to address this particular issue. This is the first time a piece of Apple software has crashed on me, and it does so consistently. Please help!

    I have a similar problem. I am using 10.4.3 with iTines 6.01 and QT Pro 7.03. When I want to import a video file or when I want to watch the preview in the iTMS iTunes crashes straight away. No problems with music.
    I have no idea what the reason could be. I think it has to to with the ltest update to 10.4.3, because everything works fine under 10.4.2 (with latest iTunes and QT).
    Perhaps anybody has an idea what to do

  • Only plays first 10-20 seconds of song and then quits

    I bought the 4GB shuffle yesterday - connected to iTunes, registered, and sync'd. I left the shuffle connected to the USB port for three hours (made sure computer and port would not hibernate) - tried listening to the music and only got to hear the first 10 seconds or so, then it stopped. Turned it off, waited, turned it back on and skipped over several songs to hear a different one (in case the problem was that one song) - same thing, it cut off after 10-20 seconds. Plugged into USB port on desktop overnight (in case there was a problem with the laptop's port). Green light was on this morning (yes, in all previous instances, the light on the iPod was green) - tried it out and made it to about 20 seconds and it shut off. Ran to the store, bought the AC wall adapter (by Apple for the shuffle) and let it charge three hours - woo hoo, got to hear 20 seconds of a song. I have restored twice, reinstalled iTunes, restored again, etc. Does anyone have any clue as to what the problem is??

    3rd Gen Shuffle here, and mine does the same thing. I too have tried restoring, etc, nothing seems to improve it. Like the other poster, I am certain it is fully charged, and I know it's not damaged, as it's fresh out of the box. When I toggle on-off-on, the voiceover confirms that the battery is fully charged. I'm really bummed, as I love Apple and my family has bought at least one of everything they've made since the Apple II, and I've always found their products to be nothing short of awesome.
    Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

  • Importing video only working on one machine

    I have iTunes running on my desktop PC and over recent weeks have ripped most of my DVDs into MP4 files. Then using home sharing I can play these films on my new Apple TV.
    This all works fine
    But I have no desire to leave my desktop PC running 24x7 just to serve movies to ATV as this would use a lot of energy so I tried to set up a virtual PC on my home server which could run 24x7 and run iTunes on that. No matter what I tried, I could not get iTunes on that VM to import movies (the same files that ran fine on my desktop PC) so I put it down to a lack of resources on the VM.
    So I have now built a new desktop PC specifically to be used for iTunes. Running WIndows 7 and iTunes and nothing else, this machine also refuses to let me import the MP4 files into iTunes.
    I have Quicktime installed and the settings in iTunes as identical to the other desktop but it refuses to let me import movies. The exact same movies that are working just fine on my other desktop PC.
    So what gives?
    lLearly the MP4 files are compatible with iTunes as they are working just fine on my old PC but not on the new one.
    Am i going mad? Has anybody else come across this before?

    I'm going to add to this.
    I have just discovered that if I access the iTunes library on the old desktop from the new one via Home Sharing, I can use the import button to copy the movies from one machine to the other. They play fine and stream to ATV fine from here.
    The only thing that is odd is that when the file arrives in the new iTunes library, if there was no embeded album art, there is no auto generated thumbnail!
    So clearly the MP4 files CAN play on the new machine so this is very much an oddity
    I'm now sure I'm going mad here. Anybody?

  • TS1717 Only part of each of the songs were downloaded (maybe the first 20-50 seconds).I have updated my itunes software.How do I try again?

    Yesterday I purchase two albums from the iTunes on line store.  After they were downloaded I realized I needed to update my iTunes software (software couldn't recognize my CD burner).  Once I updated iTunes, I burned each album onto a seperate memorex CD-R.  When I went to listen to them today on my drive to work, only the first 20 - 50 seconds of the songs are there.  At home I tried to play them directly from my iTunes library and the same thing....I didn't get the songs in their entirerty.  Is it possible to download them again from the iTunes store without re purchasing?  and yes, I restarted my computer after updating iTunes   Help???

    Assuming you are in a region where you are allowed to redownload your past music purchases, delete the broken tracks from your iTunes library, close and then reopen iTunes, go to the iTunes Store home page, click the Purchased link from the Quick Links section in the right-hand column, then select Music and Not on this computer. You should find download links for your tracks there.
    While downloading select Downloads in the left-hand column and make sure Allow Simultaneous Downloads is unticked.
    If the problem persists, or that facility is not yet available in your region, contact the iTunes Store support staff through the report a problem links in your account history, or via Contact Support.
