Import videos from extension .mod (MPEG-2)
I´m a new Mac user. I have a JVC digital video camera (JVC GZ-MC200), whose video extensions are .mod, and according to the manual are MPEG.2 files. The camera comes with a drive for Windows but not for Mac. iPhoto recognised and imported all the photos, but iMovie could not recognise the videos.
I´ve just found that the MPEG-2 Playback application seems to import MPEG-2 files of video but without sound, and I´ve just read that MPEG streamclip could do the job with the MPEG-2 Playback component.
Is there someone who knows if that will work importing my videos with sound to iMovie, or if knows some program for Mac to do this kind of work?

I am having trouble importing video from a JVC HD7U camcorder into iMovie 11. The import screen shows up and recognizes the camera with the time counter activating but there is no image on the screen and the record or import buttons do not seem to do anything. I have followed the instructions from the manual and others found online. Someone please help. Terry

I have a new Everio HD that I have been fooling with all day. Finally got a clip into iMovie 6 ....but only once and I'm still figuring this out too.....if you are not using a HD camera this may or may not work for you.
The Everio Quicktime extension must be installed. (Download and install the patch if you upgrade to Leopard).
Is your camera an HD? If so you need to capture the clip in 1440 CDR not FHD (FullHighDef).
Launch iMovie 6. Create a new movie in Video format HDV 1080i . then plug in your camera via firewire.
Put the camera in playback mode (Play/REC), press the Function, select Dubbing Playback (bottom of the menu). You should get a menu with a start button now. Switch to iMovie 6 and select "Import". This should start the clip playing from the camera....you may have to hit the Start on the camera.
This should get your clips into i Movie.
We may be ably to create playlists and get them in that way too but I have not had any luck with the JVC instructions to do this. There are video tutorials on the JVC website too but again they have not worked for me.
There is also a way to get and work the FHD files but that is a USB file transfer followed by a file conversion. I'll tackle that a little later...

Impossible to import videos from Panasonic SDR s26 to iMovie 09, previously no problem. Any way to solve this problem?
I don't have your model but here are some things to try.
1) Make sure you are powering the camcorder with AC power not batteries.
2) Open iMovie before connecting the Camcorder
3) Connect the USB Cable and turn on the camcorder
4) Open the LCD screen of the camcorder. Does it give you a choice of Pictbridge vs. PC Mode. If so, choose PC Mode.
5) iMovie import screen should come up.
Also, make sure you have installed all software updates. (/Software Update). If the software update requires you to restart your Mac, then restart your Mac before proceeding. Install iMovie, iLife, Quicktime, and Leopard updates.
If that still does not work, try taking out your SD card and putting in a USB card reader.
If that still does not work, put the card back in the camcorder and make a disk image of the card using disk utility. After making the disk image, try formatting the card using your camcorder menu. Then retry shooting some footage and importing.
By the way, using MPEG streamclip should not create files any larger than iMovie will create using an import function. -

What is the proper workflow for importing video from my Sony DCR SR82 into iMovie '08?
Anyone do this successfully?I just bought a related Sony camera, the DCR-SR220. I am still trying to figure out the optimal way, but have been able to see it on my imac by
1) installing from Apple Software site Quicktime mpeg-2 playback component (http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/) and
2) installing MPEG Streamclip (www.squared5.com)
1) Via USB I hook up my camera and it shows up as a harddisk. I then boot Streamclip and open the file(s) I want to open from the camera. This can take substantial time.
2) Export as a Quicktime file (.mov)
3) Open up the .mov file in iMovieHD and edit there.
If you know of any better way, please let me know.

First decide which editing program you intend to use; iMovie, FCE, FCP, Adobe Premier, etc. Read the user's manual or Help files for your chosen application to determine the steps needed: the procedure will vary somewhat from application to application.
Next, with the camera and the computer off, connect the Firewire cable to both units, then power up. Set the camera to VTR (play) mode. Open your editing program and follow the instructions provided in the Help files for capturing DV footage from tape.
Do NOT expect the camera to mount on your desktop as if it were a hard drive or optical disc.

Failure importing video from the Desktop in iMovie 2009?
When I attempt to import a folder of .MOV videos from the desktop into an existing project in iMovie 2009, it appears to go through the loading and importing steps, but the entire process and loading bar only occur for a matter of seconds, and no video appears to be imported.
I have tried importing the video as a new event, and the process happens the same way, this time creating a new event folder in the Event Library, but with nothing in it.
I have tried selecting only one video, also to no avail.
I have also tried to import videos formatted in .AVI, this failed.
Anyone had this issue, or know a fix/workaround? At this point I don't know how to import video from the hard drive into a new project at all. Dragging the files from desktop to event frame within iMovie does not work either.Well, I think the 9-pin to 4-pin cable is the best way to go. Get your camera's power adapter out and plug the camera into the wall first. Once the camera's got power, put it into VCR/playback mode. Then also go into the Menus on the camera and also check your manual to make sure you are sending the video signal out through the firewire and not just through the RCA video jacks. I don't know if the GL2 has a control for the Firewire jack, but just double-check that to make sure it's turned on.
Now setup the Mac to recognize the camera. Shut it down completely and plug the firewire cable into the Mac. Make sure your camera hasn't gone to low power/sleep mode. Startup the Macintosh, when you see the desktop appear launch iMovie. Then go to File Menu > Import from Camera. And in that window that pops up it should list your GL2 in addition to the iSight webcam. -

What is the recommended way to import DVD (non-commercial/non-encrypted) footage into Final Cut Pro X? I have some clips on a DVD that I need to include in my project. I don't want to transcode and I've read using streamclip is the way to go but requires purchasing an out of date codec from Apple, etc. Really Apple? That's absurd. There must be a better way.

Dear all,
After happily purchasing Canon Legria Camcorder FS306, I realise that my IMOVIE HD could not detect the camcorder when connected to my Macbook pro.
Have 2 questions here:
1. Is it impossible for IMovie HD to detect newer camcorders? Should I then upgrade to IMOVIE09?
2. Currently, Canon Legria Camcorder FS306 is not listed as 1 of the supported camcorders for IMOVIE09. It is one of the newer models. Is IMOVIE09 able to import video from this camcorder now? Or in the near future? Or it may never be supported?

This camcorder is not on the iMovie 09 supported list. However, every Canon camcorder since 2008 has supported iMovie 08 and 09, so odds are good that this one will, too. Odds are good that it works right now. IF you want to know for sure, call Canon. ....or take your camera to an Apple Store and hook it up.
It might be possible to do some manual conversions and continue to use iMovie 6. For example, you could try converting the MPEG2 files to DV using a tool like MPEG Streamclip. You would also need the $20 Apple QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component. I find iMovie 09 to be a much better editor, but if you are comfortable with iMovie 06, this might be worth a try for you. -
Can someone help with importing video from Canon XA10 (AVCHD) into PE 11?
In PE 11 when I import video from my canon xa10 (avchd) the quality is terrible, I also have a canon xa20, 60D and gopro that I video with and they all turn out with great video quality. Is there a reason why the xa10 video quality is bad? Setting I need to change?

In Premiere Elements 11 and 12 takes over setting the project preset based on the properties of the first file drag to the Timeline. Sometimes it does it right; sometimes not. You can check what the project has set by using the readings from Edit Menu/Project Settings/General and the readings for Editing Mode, Timebase, Frame Size, and Pixel Aspect Ratio even if the fields look grayed out. If the project preset is set for NTSC AVCHD Full HD1080p30, then the Edit Menu/Project Settings/General should be as represented in the following screenshot
Please refer to setting the project preset yourself manually and then importing the source media into the project.

Importing videos from enhanced cd's
is it possible to import videos from "enhanced cd's"? if so how do i do it.
Never mind I figured it out. But for the people who want to do it here's how.
1. locate the video file that you want to put on ipod/itunes
2. click on it and go to "send file" and send it to itunes
3. it should be under movies in your itunes window then right click and click "convert for ipod/iphone"
4. after it's done right click the video delete the one thats not an mpeg file
5. convert to ipod/iphone

IMovie not importing videos from iPhoto
I am trying to import videos from iPhoto into iMovie. It is not bringing in ( i.e. creating thumbnails for) anything after Dec 2010. The videos all show up in iPhoto and they were shot with an iPhone. Is there a date range set somewhere that I need to change. I can not even get them if I specifically try and import them one at a time through File-Import-Movies. When I try this method it lets me select the videos, but they still don't show up in my video thumbnails. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

OSX 10.8.3 on a 2012 iMac
iMovie 11 9.0.8I open up iMovie and it then imports movies from iPhoto. The problem is it is missing several videos. When I select import video it imports those missing files, so I know it's not a file format issue... Anyone else seen this? Any suggestions on how to get ALL my videos into iMovie?
iPhoto will import any file that can be played in the QT Player (i.e., that is "playback" compatible). On the other hand, iMovie '08 will only import files that it can edit -- i.e. that are "edit" compatible. (Would you really want to waste your time importing files only to find that you can't do anything with them once they are "in" the application?) Your solution is to convert non-edit compatible files to compression formats that are editable -- primarily DV, AIC, M-JPEG, Photo-JPEG, MPEG-4, or H.264. You should also note that both audio and video content must be edit compatible. For instance, many AVI files contain M-JPEG video which can be edited along with ADPCM audio which cannot be edited and so such files will not import. -

Can you import video from a DVD? I have some home DVD's made on my PC. My PC program (Roxio) allowed me to pull clips off of a DVD, but I can not seem to figure out how to do it with iMovie on my Mac.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!Hi, I'll see if I can help. The only way I know of importing directly from iMovie off of a DVD is with a converter box hooked up to an external DVD player. However there are a few freeware programs you could try. One is Handbrake, with it you can convert your DVD into a MPEG-4 file, this is incredibly easy however the quality will be a little lower than that of a DVD. Another program is MactheRipper which will rip the entire DVD onto your hard drive but you will have to hunt through all the files to find the ones you want. I hope this helps.

Imported videos from Kodak PlaySport will play!
I just discovered today that iPad will import video from the Kodak PlaySport Zx3 and ACTUALLY PLAY IT! Granted, it will only play video shot in standard definiton, not HD. Since I couldn't find any info on the compatibility between this video camera and the iPad, I went to my local Best Buy with my own SD card, shot some test videos, then imported it to the iPad using the Camera Connection Kit SD card accessory.
Here are the details --
Capture modes
(Imports, doesn't play) 1080p—1920 x 1080, 30 fps
(Imports, doesn't play) 720p / 60 fps—1280 x 720, 60 fps
(Imports, doesn't play) 720p—1280 x 720, 30 fps
(Imports AND plays!) WVGA—848 x 480, 30 fps
Just wanted to share this info. Hope it helps someone out there!Two posters mentioned GoodReader will allow you to import HD video from the Kodak PlaySport to the iPad. Two other posters said they tried and it only worked with photos (and maybe non-HD video).
If you have actually used GoodReader (or any other program, for that matter) to import HD video from the PlaySport to iPad, could you please post something other than a single sentence declaring that you can do it? Step-by-step instruction, for example, would be great.
For the record, when I use GoodReader and press the camera icon at the bottom, it opens the "Photo Albums" selection, but HD movie files are not shown (even though they are in the photo album and displayed with a generic movie icon).
