??? Import VOB files

I have some raw footage from a company that shot a commercial for me. I want to import it into FCE and it won't let me. Can i do that? i have no idea what they used to import off of thier camera, all it tells me about the files on the DVD they gave me is normal DVD files, i.e. .VOB, .IFO, .BUP...etc. Any ideas? I am assuming they created an actual DVD out of the files, which i told them not to so i think i am screwed! I am trying to open this so i can edit it a bit and then make a dvd out of it. Just gives me the normal error file unknown like anything else i try to import that i didn't convert or import from camera myself. Any help would be much appreciated. Pretty new with FCE so don't know everything it can do.

FCE handles only DV files. What your clients did was make an MPEG2 DVD
You have to convert the DVD to the DV format. You can use a program like DVDxDV (it costs but not a lot) to do the conversion or program like MPEG Streamclip (its free but you have to buy the Apple MPEG Playback component)
Or, you could daisy chain a DVD player thru a DV cam into the puter (use analog cables from the DVD player to the cam and firewire from the cam to the puter) and capture into FCE
No matter what method you use, there will be quality loss, especially when you encode back to DVD
The other alternative: Have them create a data DVD from the footage or BEST ALTERNATIVE have them give you the footage on DV tape

  • Any way to import VOB files?

I want to take an existing DVD created with a standalone burner, and replace the generic Sony menu with a custom menu I create in Encore 5.  I alsmo need to change the chapter stops.
I'd like to be able to import the VOB files from the DVD so I don't need to recompress them, but every time I drag a VOB file into Encore, no matter the filename or size, it names the file VTS_01_1.VOB and gives it a duration of 15 seconds.
Is there a way to work with these files?  Or a program that will split my VOB files into mv2 and ac3 files so that I can work with them without doing any recompression?

Why does Encore allow me to import VOB files at all if it isn't going to handle them properly?
The reason is in "DVD created with a standalone burner"
Such files are very often NOT according the strict standard... I think it mentions that in the link I posted a bit ago
Also, VOB's on a DVD contain menu and other information... since they are, of course, an output + viewing format, not meant to be edited or reused

  • How to Import VOB files into Premiere Pro?

In CS4 I could import VOB files from a DVD disc, but very often they wouldn't play right. In CS6 the program just freezes. Can I import and edit vob files in CS6?

  • Problem importing VOB files using Premiere Pro CC

Something must have changed between CS6 & CC as far as importing VOB files from non-DRM DVDs.
When I import the VOB files from a DVD using CS6, the import seems to go fine.
But when I import the VOB files from the same DVD using CC, the video info Frame Size and Aspect Ratio of the last VOB files comes in "wrong" when it should be the same as all of the other files.
It always seems to be the last file and it always seems to be off by the same amount.
I can Interpret Footage back to the same aspect ratio as the rest of the VOB files, but I cannot seem to fix the incorrect framesize.
I am using Premiere Pro CC Version 7.2.1(4).
Thanks in advance for any help.

    Try this instead.

  • Import VOB file ok, export shaky

I am using Adobe Premiere CS5, works fine.
Now I am trying to reedit old home videos so I imported VOB files from my burned DVDs. 4:3 ratio movies, I expand these so I have full widescreen (16:9) view.
Video and audio seem to be all right.
However when I try to export  the new file (to 16:9), horizontal movements are not ok, the persons or objects which move horizontally (quickly) are not ok, the outlines are weird.
So within Adobe Premiere there is no problem, but after exporting the file (AVI), it just doesn't look right on the TV.

VOB files are highly compressed... a DV AVI file is about 13Gig per hour, a VOB of that same hour compressed to fit on a DVD
When you edit a VOB and then export, you are adding a second compression... so your results are not going to be all that great

  • Importing VOB files into PP CS3

I have looked at numerous forum notes on this problem with PP and I've about come to the conclusion that the easiest thing might be to just buy a copy of Premiere Elements. I understand Premiere Elements will import VOBs and convert them to AVI. Some of the other solutions require several pieces of software, multiple steps, etc sometimes with limited successs.
My most recent attempt (just renaming the VOB file to MPG) resulted in good quality video with no audio. Is the primary reason for loss of audio the AC3 Dolby? Will copying the ad2mcac3dec.dll file from the Encore CS3 directory to the PP CS3 root directory really solve that problem? Is that it? That would be nice but somehow I'm a little skeptical. Are there other reasons for losing the audio when you just rename the VOB file to MPG?

  • Premiere Pro CS4 ERROR import VOB file

Today my Premiere Pro CS4 had Error about importing VOB file but yesterday it's can import smoothly.
please help me fix the problem.
    *ERROR Picture*
    thanks
ps. i just done updated CS4 to the latest this morning but the ERROR still show.

    Harm,
I also wonder if the OP's version might not have reverted to the "trial" version, with the update. Because the VOB is an MPEG, that would not be supported.
If this has happened, you will need to Deactivate, uninstall, run Adobe Clean Script CS4 several times, re-booting between each, and then re-installing and Activating. Then immediately do the full updating. To test whether you now have the "trail" version, just Import an MPEG file, and see if you get a File Format/CODEC error message.
    Good luck,

  • Import vob file to imovie no tone

I managed to import a .vob file from a disk to imovie, with the import/file function in imovie.  But there is no tone with the film.  When I check the vob file with MPEGstremclip of Quicktime , there is a tone.
Any help how to import the vob file with tone?

Use MPEG Streamclip for this, and you will have sound.

  • MAC CS5 - importing .VOB files (HELP!)

I have a NON-copy protected TS_VIDEO folder.  I can play the video fine with DVD Player.
I created a PP project...imported the VOB files and in the PROJECT preview window the video seems fragmented...jumps around the video...video clip are there but the entire video in the VOB isn't previewing.
I brought it into the SOURCE window...same fragmentation...I dragged it to the TIMELINE...same fragmentation.
What am I doing wrong?  Is is something to do with the SEQUENCE created...DV - NTSC 48mHz?
Wouldn't you know this would happen the day before a project is due.
I have rebooted the MAC, I have no other programs running...I have restarted PP...I have oodles of RAM.

  • How to import .vob files into Encore CS5?

I know Encore CS4 and 5 support the import of .VOB files but how is this achieved exactly?  I've got a DVD that is not copy protected and I've tried Import as Asset and dragging the .VOB files to the project but neither works.  What's the procedure please?

    You do not.
You can Import 100% DVD-compliant VOB's into PrPro, as of CS4.2. That is what you will want to do.
The alternative method is to rip the MPEG-2 files from those VOB with other software, and then Import those into Encore.
A VOB is what Encore produces, not what it uses.
This ARTICLE will give you some background.

  • Importing vob files into dvd studio pro 4

    hi
    any help please ?
i have a project ,where i have a dvd already made and i now need to ad extra features to it,
with the original dvd i have only the video ts folder to go with.
i cant inport the vob files ,i changed the extensions to mpeg,mpg,mv2
all were not able to be imported, tried idvd no luck.
seeing that the vob files are mpeg2 i would expect that dont need to be converted ,but is it something to do with the audio files needing to be separated?
    cheers
i find this forum wonderfully useful

The files do need to be demuxed/reconverted into a usable format.
There's a free program people tout all the time when people ask this question: MPEG Streamclip.
I use Cinematize as I feel it has more 'finessing' options: http://www.miraizon.com/products/products.html

  • Import .VOB files into iMovie?

I have copied footage from my camera (don't have that tapes anymore!) to a DVD. Now I want to import the files into iMovie to edit and so but iMovie doesn't recognize the file-formats on my DVD: .VOB
Can anyone tell me how I can convert these files so I can import them?
    Thank you very much...

Ok I was right, the stretching is coming from importing it directly into imovies folder. Unfortunately when I drag the dv file into imovies the quality was not as good as HB.
Now trying the crop method directly into imovies to see if that fixes the stretching as the picture quality seemed much better, if that don't work I'll save it to my desktop using HB at 100% quality as that seems to be the best and then drag it into imovies quality.
How, if it was you, would you convert the files back to mpeg2? Is there a free converter as I don't have QT pro? Will SC do it in good quality?
I also thought (hate to use the pc word) but I may store the file in my external hard drive as a quicktime or divx or another format (what will give me the best quality from the other formats) and then do the conversion to mpeg2. Then use something like dvdshrink to make the file dvd size
Gees what a bummer man! Just as well I have 2 weeks off work. Not quite the way I was hoping to spend it though!

  • PE3 - Audio & Video out of synch on imported VOB files

I have tried adding some footage imported from DVD & is saved in a folder on the PC (by the PE process).
The file is stored as VOB 1 & VOB 2. When I import this file into the PE project the first half plays OK. When it plays onto the second file, the audio is lagging behind the video by a considerable amount.
If I view the file separately (where it is stored) with Windows Media Player, it plays back fine.
When I view the file in PE in the preview window, the out of synch fault occurs.
Something is happening in the import process to the PE project.
Anyone, have any ideas on the problem?

Here is a reply that I posted to a past thread that will give you options for fixing the Out-of-Sync issues when trying to use VOB files within PE.
In all cases it is better to not import VOB directly to PE, but convert to DV-AVI via one of these methods and then use the AVI format.
The last bullet below sends you to a Muvipix link describing how to combine multiple VOB's from one disc to a single file, this will cure the Sync problem, then convert this file to DV-AVI for import to PE:
I take the min-DVD directly from camcorder to my PC, and capture the disk via Power Director.
PD will convert the VOB's directly to DV-AVI Type 2 on one pass.
    I then load this DV-AVI into PE7.
(PD v7 was pre-installed on my new PC from HP, or it can be purchased from Cyberlink).
    Other options to try:
Copy the VOB's directly from the mini-DVD to your PC and use Prism to convert these to AVI.
Prism is a free convert utility and can be found here:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/415317?tstart=0
Or load the VOB or Mpeg into PE, then use that to convert to AVI.
(Export to DV-AVI with PE8 is done with SHARE/PC, not Export under the File Menu, which is greyed out).
I've had many issues trying to work with Mpeg's and VOB's when loaded directly to PE with limited success.
So if you can get it converted successfully to AVI outside of PE, I've found this to be a better approach.
Post results, if any of this works for you...
Note: One other thing, if you are working directly with VOB's to PE, especially multiple VOB's from a single DVD, you can encounter out-of-sync issues between video and audio. If this occurs, review this link from Muvipix:

  • CONVERTING and IMPORTING .VOB files into FCP?

    Hi.
I made a dvd of an old vhs tape of mine using a Sony consumer vhs-->dvd component.
Haven't had any trouble in the past using MPEG streamclip to convert .vob files and import into fcp (from dvd's NOT made on this particular machine) --but for some reason, this dvd doesn't seem to contain those files.
The icon of the dvd appears as a folder on my desktop with a small red circle on it.
The dvd plays fine on my G5, but the folder appears to be empty when opened.
    I'm stumped.
    Anyone?

Buy or hire one of these: http://www.grassvalley.com/products/advcprofessionalfamily then you can capture the tape directly into FCP as a QuickTime .mov that uses the DV codec.
Don't forget to switch the *Device Control* setting in Log & Capture to *Non-Controllable Device* first.
