Import wants to import duplicates--why???

I recently consolidated photos on my server from several places and reconnected all the photos in the PSE6 organizer. As a control to make sure that all of the consolidated photos were in the catalog as expected, I imported from that folder and its subfolders expecting maybe a few that had escaped but nothing else.
Instead, it identified over 7,000 of something like 15,000 files for import.
I spot checked those 7,000 and all the ones I checked are ALREADY cataloged by the organizer. Of course, tags and album assignments and updated dates/times (to unknown) all were missing from the new imports. So, to avoid 7,000+ duplicates in the catalog, I undid the import.
Why are these getting duplicated? What can I do to eliminate the duplicates but get PSE Organizer to know that it has all of these files in the first place???

Dick,
Youve stumbled on a new bug (new to me, anyway) in PSE 6 and 7. After reconnecting a file on a network drive, it fails to ignore case in the filename when you try to reimport that file. Heres how to reproduce the bug on Vista (havent tested on XP):
1. Make a new catalog.
2. Do File > Get Photos And Videos > From Files And Folders.
3. Drill down to a file on a network folder and then click Get Photos to import it. Notice that it will start with all upper case, e.g. \\MYSERVER\.
4. In Windows Explorer, rename the file to a new name.
5. Do File > Reconnect > Missing File to reconnect the file.
6. Drag the file from Windows Explorer into the Organizer window to import it. (This is the way I usually import photos.) It will fail to identify the file as a duplicate and import it again with a lowercase server name, e.g. \\myserver.
7. Examining the database that represents the catalog, the volume table has two entries, one for \\MYSERVER and one for \\myserver.
The only way I know of cleaning up this mess in your catalog is to open the database file with a database tool (e.g. sqlite3) and edit the tables. But youd need to be reasonably savvy about relational databases.
I cant predict the long term consequences of not fixing the problem. It may be simply that PSE fails to identify duplicates on import. Or there may be other consequences were not thinking of yet.
You could try contacting Adobe Customer Support. But theyre likely to take a very long time (weeks) to tell you that they cant do anything. Last year someone had a catalog mangled due to a bug, and he could no longer access tens of thousands of photos archived on CD. Adobe took many weeks to acknowledge it was a problem, had him send a copy of the catalog, but then failed to fix it.

  • Import wants to import too many photos

My iPhoto Library contains 6611 photos. I'm attempting to import that same library into a new library in /Users/Shared in which I plan to combine my photos with those in my wife's iPhoto Library.
There seems to be an issue with import. When I try to import my library into the /Users/Shared library, after analyzing the import, iPhoto tells me there are over 13,000 photos to import.
My library has been around since the first days of iPhoto. I've never mangled the file system. I've simply upgraded from one version to the next.
Is this simply a bug? Is there something I can do to get the import to only recognize the 6611 photos in my library.

When specifing a directory during import, it appears as if the import is simply looking for all the pictures and movies under the directory (originals, modified, data, etc.). I counted the pictures under iPhoto Library as follows:
    find . -name \*.jpg -o -name \*.JPG | wc
    14582 42513 618190
I just tried the same import again. In fact it says it is going to import
    14586 pictures and 33 movies.
I'd like import to look at the iPhoto Library data, not just find the pictures and movies. Essentially, right now I need the abilty to append the contents of one library to another, album data and all.

Sys is not imported. In fact any schema ending in SYS is not imported.
This is because SYS is the datadictionary, and the datadictionary is automatically recreated during import.
If you have your own tables in the SYS schema, you will loose them, as you can't export SYS.

  • Want to import from pictures file and wont let me

I am so so frustrated. I have so many problems using imovie.
I have a mac book pro latest update and leopard.
I don't import my pictures into aperture or iphoto because I can't find the photos after wards. They are imbedded into the program. So I always download into Bridge. I love bridge and photoshop. I don't use aperture to edit. I want more control. So I go to use imovie and it wont let me import from my pictures file. So i finally break down and import into aperture and now all the pictures are split up into a file each. WHYWHYWHY.? Why would it put a picture in each file. I have the file and then 78 subfiles with 1 picture each!!!!! That is so irritating. I tried to download from a camera archive and it didn't work either. This is why i don't use imovie hardly ever. It is just too difficult to get the pictures inthere and if i do put them in i can't find them on the hard drive.

no, it is quite easy - you make it difficult.
and a Computer/program is much faster searching and finding files than you.
    I like the metaphor:
why naming the drawer, you put in files manually, instead of letting a machine find it for you? I can find a well-indexed/'tagged' pic-file much faster with iPhoto than any manual search ".. was it Sept/08 or Oct/08? Was it 'Vacations/Summers/Islands/Trees' or 'Backgrounds/Nature/Woods/' .. ? A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

  • Imported photos and got duplicates - how to identify and remove duplicates?

    Hi all,
I am running iPhoto '08 and it has worked very well.
Yesterday, I imported a folder containing photos and I knew that some of the photos already existed in my iPhoto Library. But not concerned, when I know that iPhoto will detect duplicates.
Well, strangely enough, iPhoto did anyway import some of the photos that resultet in me getting in duplicates anyway. The wierd thing though, is that not every "duplicate" was imported. Some of them iPhoto informed med "hey this already exist, want to import anyway?". I choosed that duplicates should not be imported and that should go for all photos that are duplicates.
    Now, my question is:
Is there a way in iPhoto to identify duplicates in the iPhoto Library?
If so, it would be great to be able to remove the duplicates!
Anyone got a solution to my issue?
    Sincerely,
    Andreas

  • Import 800K photos (many duplicates) into Aperture from multiple folders in one hard drive.

I have a hard drive with 800,000+ photos in it, many are duplicates after I have made multiple back-ups to different drives over the years and then transferred all the photos to this new drive. The photos are located in different folders but are all in the same hard-drive. How do a import the photos in the easiest/fastest way? How will they get sorted, by date? Is there anyway that I could delete the duplicates without losing photos? I have many photos with the same file name (but from different cameras), tumbnails, edited photos etc.
    Very thankful for your assistance!

    Hi,
You can import photos from multiple folders.
Just click File >> Get Photos and Videos >> From Files and Folders
Now select the folders you want to import photos from (they should be at same level in the directory, say all folders in My Pictures) using Ctrl+Click, tick the checkbox for 'Get Photos from subfolders' if not already checked and then click 'Get Media'.
    Hope that will help
    Thanks

  • I want to import info from iViewPro

I want to import info from iView MediaPro3, a similar product with a few years of history, yet I see no references at all to it. My guess is that LR cannot import any info (labels, ratings, keywords, etc) from it. Does any one know anything about importing from non-Adobe cataloging programs?
    Thanks,
    MichaelGG

Personally, I modify the originals. What's the big deal - if you have virgin backups? You do, don't you? iView uses the Nikon libraries, I haven't (yet) had a problem with tens of thousands of images, and I have backups. But that's your call.
Another option might be to use it as an opportunity to go DNG. You'd leave the DNG converter running overnight (!) and it would duplicate the structure of your NEFs. Obviously you'll need lots of disc space (about 2/33 again). Then make a copy of your iView catalogue and run a script that points the records at the DNGs (pretty easy as the folder structure is identical). You then tell iView to sync its metadata - it's documented - though its catalog sets and its people and custom fields won't come over. It's not a hard job (on Windows anyway) to script people and custom fields over to keywords - see my comments in
    this thread.

  • Importing all images without duplicates - LR3, LR4, LR5

Howdy. I've been using Lightroom 3 for a couple years.
Recently, a friend passed away. I went to look for photos of him and realized that many were missing. I've since found a few of them on Facebook, and suspect that some are lurking in old backups (of my files in general, not necessarily LR backups) on various hard drives. Things are desperate enough that I want to do an Import on *every single freaking image* on my 7 external drives and my internal drive, and yes, go through and weed out the little non-photo images that the system finds in all sorts of places on my hard drive.
But! Despite having clicked the check box for "Do not import suspected duplicates," I see that it wants to import thousands of them. Some are photos that I recognize from browsing through my master catalogue -- images I already have. Others are photos that haven't yet been imported -- but when the system finds multiple copies of those files (most of these from my IMAP mail attachment spools) it wants to import all of them, even though they are the same photo and often the same filename. We are talking tens of thousands of pictures, so I'm not keen on going through by hand and un-clicking all these duplicates.
Anyone know if a later version of LR can do this better?
Also, if later versions of LR help the user handle duplicates that are *already* in a catalogue? I've bought some scripts/plug-ins that help do this work, but it's still multi-step, very time consuming, and dodgy.
My needs are that of an amateur photographer who doesn't need much technical stuff (e.g. i have no idea of the ISO or the lens type of any of my photos, and am unlikely to start following that information later). I do need organizational help and I love the ability to develop quickly. But I've been constantly vexed by trying to get all the photos in the right place. An "expert" I hired to help me set up on LR recommended having different catalogues for different projects. Later, the entire Interweb pretty much shook its collective LR finger at me for having multiple cats, and so I made one big master catalogue. And since then, things have been pretty screwed up. I'm not sure whether I should bother to upgrade, or simply leave LR and try my luck at something else.

No version of Lightroom has tools to find or remove duplicates, and the import dialog has the same feature that is supposed to prevent duplicates from being imported. Lightroom considers a photo to be a duplicate if it has the same file name, capture date/time and file size.
So upgrading Lightroom does not help in this task.
However, you might want to see if this plug-in works for you (note: I have not tried it)

Trying your luck at something else ... in my opinion, if you are not organized using Lightroom, then simply moving to different software does not improve your organization. And there really isn't any "luck" involved. Improving your organization involves YOU putting in the work to become organized. The software is merely the tool that you use. And so any photographic management software will give you tools to improve your organization. It's really up to you, the software is not the problem.

    @Carolyn:
Yes, I did search before but restricted it to the past month, because I had the feeling that it’s worse now since the update to 5.1.10, but I may be wrong.
It seems this is an old and unsolved common problem.
    @andy:
“Top Sites” is hot, but I’ve never used that funny dots without any mouse-over text.
After deleting (before starting Safari)  it’s restored by a default TopSites.plist, it seems these cookies
    - are only reloaded when viewing the Top Sites (?)
    - are not among my reappearing cookies, I have never seen such a cookie / cache on my system before (e.g. expedia, orbitz, monster, usatoday, disney, craigslist).
And Top Sites would not explain why the Web Inspector has different infos regarding use of cookies and local storage than Safari’s “Privacy” tab.
After playing with deleting TopSites.plist, without surfing, suddenly I have ”121 cookies or other data” at Safari’s Privacy tab, nearly all are listed as “Cache” or “Cache, Cookies” but the Web Inspector doesn’t show any of them, only my google.co.uk items.
---> Thanks, I’ll send a feedback to Apple.

  • Firefox 3 Backup doesn't want to import anymore! .file

I have exported bookmarks using Backup in Firefox 3.6
Then I have reinstalled my OS and formatted everything. Now when I downloaded latest Firefox it doesn't want to import my Backup anymore. (Firefox backup.file) I am pissed off because I have over 80 websites stored in there. And this is going to mess up everything. I can open it in notepad and see the way it is saved, why the hell doesn't Firefox import it itself? I need this fixed soon so I can import all my bookmarks.

*Firefox has an export to html option for '''''exporting''''' bookmarks (to a .html file, named ''some_name_you_gave''.html)
*Firefox has a Bookmark backup option for '''''backing-up''''' bookmarks (to a .json file, named similar to ''bookmarks-2011-07-27.json'' but with the date of the backup)
Where did you get the file '''''backup.file'''''. That is not a file name/extension that will be recognized by Firefox. If you used ''Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks > Import and Backup > Backup'', it should be a .json file and would be dated similar to the one in the second bullet above and would be in your profile folder, in a folder named ''bookmarkbackups''

  • IPhoto 11 wants to import pics already imported from ipad

    Greetings,
    Config: MacOS 10.6.8 on a MacPro4,1
               iPhoto11 vers 9.2.3(629.52)
iPad 3 retina display, IOS 6.1.3, tethered
Issue: Everytime I attach iPad, iPhoto shows pics which were previously imported along with the new pics I want to import.
When importing the all pics iPhoto wants to import, it knows these few pics are duplicates and prompts the window, import dups ?, doesnt matter what I select. The same pics show up on the next import of new pics next time.
    Any ideas are welcomed :-)

Mag, I've had this problem in the past and found a workaround which helped me. I had to do this in this exact order.
    1. Plug in device to get the import screen.
    2. Select all the photos in iPhoto under the New Photos area.
    3. In the upper left corner enter a new event name "Photos Previously Imported" (or anything else you prefer).
    4. Hit the "Import Photos" button. If the the pictures were indeed already imported you will get a "Duplicate Photo" dialog box.
    5. Choose "Import" and check the "Apply to all duplicates" checkbox.
    6. Upon completion select either "keep the photos" on the device or choose to "delete them from device".
    7. Eject device and close down iPhoto.
    8. Re-launch iPhoto, plug in device and photos should not appear as new photos anymore. (I did this a few times to be sure).
    9. Eject device a second time, after device is ejected you can delete the imported Event called "Photos Previously Imported". Close iPhoto.
    10. launch iPhoto for a final time and plug in device. If all worked correctly the photos should no longer appear as new photos.
    * Note: If this does not work and you selected to keep the photos on your device, some have gotten a different result by choosing to delete them instead. ( Step 6 )
    Good luck

I don't want to use the import contacts button as it seems like it will automatically all of my carefully curated contacts photos.
The facebook equivalent lets you choose if you want the photos or not. Why doesn't this?

After adding song to library delete the originals. Then your folder is empty again waiting for more songs to add to library.
Do this only if iTunes is set to copy songs to iTunes folder when adding.
