Import warning: Character borders aren't supported and were removed.

I use Pages '08 to create essays for my college classes. These are very basic documents without any fancy layout or graphics. I create the essays in Pages, then export them as a Word document. If I then reopen the Word document using Pages, I always seem to get the error listed in the thread title. How can pages not be able to properly import a document that it exported in the first place? Is there anything I can do to prevent this error?
I've looked in the Pages help, in this forum, on the main Apple support site, and on Google and I haven't seen any mention of this issue. Any ideas would be appreciated.

"I create the essays in Pages, then export them as a Word document. If I then reopen the Word document using Pages, I always seem to get the error listed in the thread title."
The term character used in a character coding context denotes a semantic entity without spatial properties and the term character used in a glyph composing context denotes a stylistic entity with spatial properties. Apple was co-founder of the Unicode project, but that does not mean Apple technical writers distinguish according to the Unicode character-glyph model -:).
If the alert refers to an event in a glyph composing context, then you should check that you have not applied a stroke weight or stroke colour to the type you are setting. As Apple Pages supports both Apple TrueType 1, Apple TrueType 2 and Microsoft's extension to Apple TrueType 1 which is called OpenType, Apple Pages supports typographic features that Microsoft Word does not support.
If the alert refers to an event in a glyph composing context, it is also possible that you applied automatic line layout using the Apple Typography Palette which provides different layout capabilities for different Apple Advanced Typography and Microsoft OpenType files of type, and that these features are not supported by the export/import direction into Word or the export/import direction back into Pages.
If the alert refers to an event in a character coding context, then the alert should be rewritten as it makes no sense to speak of stylistic attributes in relation to semantic entities. In other words, someone should rewrite that alert string for Apple Pages.
Best wishes,
Henrik

I think you would get more expert advice if you asked this in the iWork forum - its really an iWork question

  • How to close a frozen warning: I am unable to close the "charicter boarders aren't supported and were removed" warning on my pages. Untill warning is closed I can not save my document. How can I get my document saved?

I have an unsaved document open in pages but can not save it because the, "charicter boarders aren't supported and were removed" warning is open and I can not close the warning. How can i get the warning to close so I can save my document? Can I save the document without closing the warning?

Probably not, but as you will have been unable to make any changes to the document with that warning window open, you're not going to lose anything by quitting (or force quitting) without saving. You'll still have the original document you were trying to import.
I would suggest attempting to open the document in one of the open source Office applications, LibreOffice, Apache OpenOffice, or NeoOffice, each available for download from the linked sites. Once open there, remove the attributes that are causing the warning, save the file (as an MS Word document), then try opening that version in Pages.

Numbers is not an Excel clone. Importing and exporting between Numbers and Excel will eventually build up glitches.
If the university only works with 'Windoze' it might be better if you use Excel or a free version of Office (for example, Libre Office or Open Office).
If your marks depend upon a professor who uses Excel, go with the flow.

  • E4200 IPV6 support (and the removal of it)

    Dear Linksys representatives,
Could you please provide some detail on why IPv6 was available in the first builds of the router but then got removed in later firmware versions and the official lecture is that IPv6 is not being supported at all.
I've had a nice little chat with one of your representatives and they could not clarify this at all. Actually, they say no Linksys devices EVER supported IPv6 period, which does not seem to be entirely true. Saw that 1.0.00 (build 13) for the e4200 actaully has IPv6 support in it and the current build has not.
Could you also make a sticky post about IPv6 support on all Linksys devices with wether they will be supporting it in the future or not? Depending on the outcome to this question I'm deciding to return my Linksys device or not, since I actually need to have IPv6 support for development of new soft- and hardware.
    Kind regards,
    Michel
    ps: happy IPv6 day!

The E4200v1 and E4200v2 both support IPv6 in the latest firmware.  Do you still have a problem?  See also: http://home.cisco.com/ipv6 for a list of routers and the test suites that they have past.
All future home routers are expected to have IPv6.

  • Why "Text fames are not supported and were converted to text boxes"

Hi All, I help to my cousin. He wanted to open a Word file what had a header.
This header is a doc file and was written probably with Microsoft Windows by somebody else. All was shifted very right.
Is there anyway set it to see well the Pages?
    Thank for any advise.

Pages isn't a perfect converter of Word documents. They are differently coded. Some documents opens well but some don't.
You could try opening the document in LibreOffice, a free clone of MS Office.

  • Importing Avery Template / Import Warning

I downloaded a .doc template from the Avery site and opened up it in Pages but I get a warning:
Import Warning - Floating objects inside table cells aren’t supported and were removed.
The result is a blank page with no fields to type in.
I know from searching this topic in this forum I can go to the Avery website and do it online but I'd like to be able to merge Address Book addresses for Christmas cards...

Reading a post from Peggy tells me to use Address Book to print labels. In trying it out it gives me the Avery layouts right in the printing screen. Very cool. Works for me.

  • Import warning when sending Word version of Pages document as attachment in Mail

when sending Word version of Pages document in email, says character borders not supported so were removed, so email didn't have all of the text of the Pages document

Not that I know of. Would be less practical than the option coming from Pages -- everyone using Pages probably has some default email client, but far from everyone using Mail would have iWorks and Pages. So building in the feature to Mail not so practical.

    Julian,
Pages simply won't support a table with that many rows. If you need that many, you must use another application.
Perhaps the originator could use a tabbed list rather than a table. That's the only way you will be able to contain a list that long in Pages. You can do the conversion yourself if you open the Word document in LibreOffice, Copy the Table, Paste the Table into Numbers, Export the Numbers doc to CSV, and import to Pages. In Pages Find and Replace the Commas with Tabs.
There are probably other ways, but that's what comes to mind here.

  • How do I go back to 3.6 from 4.0. Having problems with Wikipedia and can't work with a shorter display [half screen] good with 4.0. McAffee, Norton and other programs aren't supported on 4.0

I need to go back to 3.6 from 4.0 Because:
    1. Norton, some Mcaffee, and other needed programs aren't supported yet.
    2. Can't downsize 4.0 to fit properly on a half screen, when using a text editor on one half and 4.0 display on the other half. I have to go to a full screen to do somethings, and then back to half screen after. Things aren't easy anymore.
    3. When moving references and extras from Wikipedia to my PC, the reference numbers and other generated items are missing on my PC. Never with 3.6
Things are not easy going with 4.0!!!!!!!

  • Just upgraded to Lion and can no longer import any .mov files ("file not supported") to 3.1.3.  Also can no longer view any .mov or .mp4 files already in library.

Have been using Aperture 3.1.3 with no problems.  Importing from a Nikon D80 (RAW & JPEG), Casio (.MOV) and Flip (.mp4).  Could import and view all videos without issue prior to Lion upgrade.  After Lion installation, can no longer import .mov files (get "file not supported" error) or even view any .mov or .mp4 files currently in library (even though thumbnail is present).  Can watch the .mov files directly on my camera using Quicktime in Finder but can't even drag & drop that file into Aperture.  Anybody else having similar problems?

Still no resolution and Geniuses at store could not assist.  Unfortunately, it looks like not all the applications were ready to support the Lion operating system.  We could not import any .mov files, could no longer view any .mov files already in my Aperture library and could not email any .mov files.  Totally frustrated.  Use Aperture almost daily and can't lose the video functionality.  Was also running dog-slow.  Constantly looking at the spinning wheel.  Geniuses suggested that I wipe out hard drive and reinstall Snow Leopard.  Had full backup on external drive with Time Machine.
Not an easy process though...had to reinstall several times (at 5 hours each time) because I continued to have issues.  Finally figured out that I needed to delete every backup file from Time Machine on external drive from the date I installed Lion because some of the hidden files were still migrating back to Snow Leopard.
    I had to:
    1. Delete all time machine backup files from date/time of Lion installation forward
    2. Do "clean" installation of Snow Leopard (wiped hard drive using disk utility and booted with Snow Leopard disc)
    3. Chose option to reinstall from backup off Time Machine which eventually got me back to Snow Leopard desktop
    4. Deleted Aperture program and reinstalled (I had to install Aperture 2 and then install Aperture 3 upgrade.
    5. Reinstalled iLife apps
    5. Applied all Apple updates available (again this took a few hours because there were several updates from Snow Leopard's original release plus Aperture 3 and other application updates)
Still doing some tweaking on some of my other apps but got everything back to where I originally was.  Now plan to wait on a few version updates from Lion before reinstalling.
I am one of Apple's biggest fans, but was very disappointed in the fact that I lost functionality in one of their own pieces of software (which I use the most!)  by installing Lion.

I've had a problem syncing my iphone to itunes ever since updating to 10.7 , so i reinstalled itunes.
When that didn't work, i uninstalled itunes and all programs related to it (quicktime, apple application support, apple mobile device support, apple software update, mozilla firefox, and safari), and reinstalled itunes again, but to no avail.
I've tried repair in add/remove programs for itunes, but it didn't work.
When I tried to do that with any of the other itunes related applications, I got this message: "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. "
When i browsed for the location of any of them, the were no where to be found on my computer.
Can someone PLEEAASE help me because this is reallllyy stressful for me??

    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
    (2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Apple Application Support entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
Next, select any Apple Mobile Device Support entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
Next, in the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Apple Software Update entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC. uninstall, then reinstall iTunes using an iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe) downloaded from the Apple Website:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
(That should reinstall the three dodgy components.)

  • Issue with turning on project 2010 / 2013 - "There is not enough memory to complete the operation. To free up available memory, close programs, projects, or windows you aren't using, and then try again."

I get the following error after the installation and configuration window of MS Project: "There is not enough memory to complete the operation. To free up available memory, close programs, projects, or windows you aren't using, and then try again."
It happens both with MS Project 2010 and 2013 on a Windows 7 desktop.
I tried installing / uninstalling Office 2010, MS Project, tried installing 32 and then 64 bit versions, clean up, disk error checker, startup changes (msconfig), anti virus, running as Windows 7 and then Windows XP compatible mode.
Nothing helps. I see this issue reported as early as 2007 version of MS projects on Microsoft forums, but I do not see any solution anywhere. Any suggestions on how to fix the issue without having to reformat hard drive? Every other application, including
all other Office programs work seamlessly.
I also tried Microsoft support, after an hour and a half of basically doing what I did before, I was told I have to pay 99$ for "premium" support, so someone can look at this bug.
I have 16 Gb RAM and more than 200Gb or hard drive free, so actual memory is not the problem.

This issue was originally reported with MS Project 2007 and keeps popping up since.
A quick Google search provides more than 200K pages of results of this issue:
    https://www.google.ca/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=There+is+not+enough+memory+to+complete+the+operation.+To+free+up+available+memory%2C+close+programs%2C+projects%2C+or+windows+you+aren't+using%2C+and+then+try+again.
    And 193K results on Bing:
    http://www.bing.com/search?q=There+is+not+enough+memory+to+complete+the+operation.+To+free+up+available+memory%2C+close+programs%2C+projects%2C+or+windows+you+aren%27t+using%2C+and+then+try+again.&go=Submit&qs=n&form=QBLH&pq=there+is+not+enough+memory+to+complete+the+operation.+to+free+up+available+memory%2C+close+programs%2C+projects%2C+or+windows+you+aren%27t+using%2C+and+then+try+again.&sc=0-0&sp=-1&sk=&cvid=4cb023c1fbd94ec2bba9821b095f21f2
Computer was defragged already. I run more tests, and specifically when MS Projects tries to run, it tries to take all memory, more than 300Gb, on the computer. (DropBox was running at the same time, and warned that there were no space. As soon as MS Project
stopped attempting to configure itself, everything came back to normal and the available space became available again.)
Looking through older forum posts, looks like this application tries to take "unlimited" amount of memory. Some registry fixes are mentioned potentially, but I was not able to apply them.
Since everything else works, this is a MS Project bug reported by multiple users on various versions of Windows, including Vista and 7, so please provide a fix and not 'not a know bug' lie. All the premium support will say, is to format the hard drive, unless
they have a patch or a registry edit solution. If the latter is true, since the issue exists for multiple years, it should have been already been provided to users.
Also, I am not running a SQL server, or any server, this is an installation on a local machine.
