Importance of LUT Bit Size

My apologies if my question is a bit off-track. However, I suspect that the most reliable source of information will lie with Mac users.
I plan to purchase an external display for post processing & print matching. The contenders are: Dell U2410 (12 bit LUT) & NEC EA231WMi (8 bit LUT). In real-world terms, how important is the diference in LUT bit size in image processing?
Thank you kindly for your help.

Thank you, David. My own research confirms your comments. In fact, I am now looking seriously at the NEC P221W (10-bit LUT). The only question is whether the Eye One Display 2 hardware will work accurately with the wide gamut NEC. I understand that the NEC SpectraView II hardware is an Eye One Display 2 unit specifically tuned for wide gamut. Some people apparently are using the SpectraView II software with the standard Eye One Display 2. I need to clear up this concern.
Thank you again for your help.

  • Re: RH8 Import from Word- Table size

This post relates to my previous post about problems when importing a word document into RH8. I imported, then changed the size of all tables in the doc to 100% (as opposed to a specific size setting), and then generated:
In the .htm (Web Help), the text is falling off the page not only in long paragraphs in the tables, but also in any long paragraphs; the bread crumbs are also falling off some long pages.
In the chm , the tables expanded properly, but the text in the tables did not stretch out to fill the extra room in each row. The text is not falling off the screen in either the tables or the regular text.
In the Adobe Air, everything appears correctly, but I would like the search results to appear in the side toc pane, not the main pane.
What settings should I be changing and how. TIA

Both try this, may or may not work, depends on the document.
Create a new project and import the Word document.
Click in a table and go to Table > Table Style and select the table to be applied. Make sure you tick the Clean Styles option.

  • Won't import at 320 bit rate?

    HI
I'm running the latest ITunes software on windows xp home and want to import audio cd's at 320 bit rate. I select this option in the custom settings and it appears to stick, but when I check the song's after importing has finished they have imported at 128 bit rate.
I've tried deleting the 2 itunes.pref files as stated else where but no luck..
Can somme one pleeease help me?

    Hi Guys
Thanks for the info, I gave it a go and changed the screen resolution and the weird thing is that I could already see the apply buttton on the original screen resolution BUT when I changed the resolution it worked!!
I don't see the logic in how window's screen resolution effects the importing bit rate of Itunes?
I suppose that's what you get when yoou throw apples at windows, Broken glass!

You have not provided any proper system info nor any info on what program you are trying to install nor the exact warning, so this is utterly pointless.

  • Is it important to use INITIAL SIZE 0 in internal table

    Hi Friends,
I want to know, is it important to use INITIAL SIZE 0 in the time of internal table deceleration.
    TYPES:       BEGIN OF L_TYP_TAB_VBELN,
                         VBELN    LIKE VBAK-VBELN,
                  END   OF L_TYP_TAB_VBELN.
DATA:  L_TAB_VBELN  TYPE STANDARD TABLE OF L_TYP_TAB_VBELN.
                                                                                    OR
DATA:  L_TAB_VBELN TYPE STANDARD TABLE OF L_TYP_TAB_VBELN INITIAL SIZE 0.
In these two internal tables which one is good as a code and performance?
    Please explain also.
    Regards
    Amit

    Hi Amit,
After the optional addition INITIAL SIZE, you can specify a number of rows n as a numeric literal or numeric constant to adjust the size of the first block in the memory that is reserved by the system for an internal table of the table type. Without this addition, if the number 0 is entered, or the value of n exceeds a maximum value, the system automatically allocates an appropriate memory area. If this is no longer sufficient, the system creates an additional block twice the size of the first block as long as this size does not exceed 8 KB. Additional areas are created where necessary with a size of 12 KB. The maximum value is calculated as 8 KB divided by the memory required for a row. In the case of larger values, a block size of 12 KB is automatically selected.
You are advised to specify the initial memory requirements only when the number of entries in the table has already been specified and the initial main memory requirement has an adequate value. This can be especially important for internal tables that are components of table types and only contain a few rows.
    Hope this helps

  • Importance of 64 bit

I have a MacBook Pro 15 inch (Core Duo 2.16). I have 2 gigs RAM as well. Am I correct that this computer does not support 64 bit? How important is 64-bit technology, does it increase speed of the computer or does it enhance the look of the general GUI?

    products...,
I realize that I did not address the later half of your question in my previous post since the first part was answered by others. You might look at the following Wikipedia link:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/64-bit
64-bit technology does have certain advantages that you may or may not see as a user. As to the look of the GUI, there is no direct relationship. When Leopard is released I believe it will support systems like your own and as such you should be able to enjoy what it has to offer just as those with 64-bit compatible hardware will.

  • Two step import, downsizing image file sizes and/or keeping copies?

    hi all,
leonie was kind enough on another thread to suggest a two step import from the iphone in order to make sure that there is no accidental deletion or data loss. my understanding (i'm repeating it here myself in case i am misunderstanding) is that this routine involves 1. importing images into Aperture via the conventional import method and then 2. backing up to iTunes (to save the images) and 3. verifying (visually i think) that the images are in the Aperture database and then if so allow Aperture to delete all the images from the iPhone.
this seems to make sense to me but i realized i had a couple of questions about general "photo hygiene" related to this kind of thing.
    1. is there some way to downsize file size after images are imported into Aperture? i take a ton of photos and only some are important to keep at a high resolution and i feel like i am stuck between having a huge Aperture database cluttered with lots of photos at high resolution /or/ turning down the file size and finding that i have an important image that is at a low resolution because i forgot to turn up the file size (i think these are in settings somewhere in my phone) before i took the photo or only realized later that it was important to have this image at higher resolution. if i could downsize while thinking about it in Aperture this seems like it would work.
    2. does anyone keep an external copy of their images outside of the Aperture database?
    thanks

    hi terence,
    thank you.
so can i ask if anyone is using an iphone and/or what setting(s) and/or resolution folks are using?
i guess i have a bit of a dilemma in that i take a ton of photos and i only use one at a high resolution while the others can be something as insignificant as a visual note to myself. and it kind of kills me that these could be 1.2 MB in that i have a lot of them. i sort of wish there was a way to downsample imagery since a lot of these are not so important.
anyway. yeah i guess i was wondering if folks do a referenced library or keep an extra copy as a backup (i guess i am 'embedding' images in the library but i forget what i call this in aperture) - and i have started to wonder if there is some utility to doing a referenced library or keeping a backup but this seems like overkill while at the same time a referenced library would allow me the ability to downsample images from what i can tell but i am just guessing here since i haven't tried this method.
    thanks.

  • N00b question - imported footage at wrong size

i have a simple test i'm trying to do involving time remapping. i created a new composition at
1920x1080 as that is the format of the footage. i imported the footage and dropped it into the
composition. when i do so, the image is not filling the screen. my view is set to 100%, as is
the scale value under the layer's transform parameter.
when i look in the project window, the window in which my elements are gathered and imported,
and select my footage, it shows a thumbnail at the top of this window and has various bits of
    info next to it:
    filename
    used 1 time
    640 x 360 (1.00)
    4260, 23.976 fps
    Apple Intermediate Codec
the thing that catches my eye is the line about 640 x 360 (1.00). it represents one third values
for 1920 x 1080 and i find that if i scale the clip in the composition window, the value i have to
give it to fill the window is 300%. if i look at the footage with the quicktime player, it shows the
    clip as 1920 x 1080.
what am i missing? did i forget something in the project and composition setup?
    thanks,

Are you absolutely SURE that your footage is 1920x1080.... It seems to me that if the footage come up short in the 1980x1080 AAAND the AE interpreter says 640x360 - perhaps you have forgot to enable the correct size in i.e. compressor which defaults to an odd value and miserably FAILS to recognize the ACTUAL footage...

  • Why are still images importing larger than their size?

Per instructions in a thread I had here last week, I created all of my DVD still images at 720 x 534 pixels for Premiere Pro CS5.5. But when they are brought into a DVCPRO50 NTSC Standard sequence, they are being heavily clipped. The original in one example is this:
But when that same images is brought into PP, it is sized up like this:
It's still proportionally correct, but a lot of the top and bottom of the image are gone. The encoded MPEG-2 sequence and disk I've done as a test display just like that.
Why is PP doing this, and how can I get it to use images built to the correct size to be used 1:1 in a sequence instead of being scaled to about 115% of size? Hate to compare this way, but this was never an issue with Final Cut Pro, which I'm switching from. Stills created to the size FCP needed of 720 x 540 displayed and finished exactly as they were made in Photoshop. The only image area lost was the normal bit of overscanning DVDs display at on your TV.

I guess I don't understand.  This is an excerpt from the CS help.  This seems to be inconsistent with what the last two posts said.
Composition settings presets for square-pixel equivalents of standard definition formats have changed as follows:

  • IPhoto duplicates/messed up import? Different file sizes?

After transferring photos from our old Mac to the iMac, there are now many duplicate photos that I'd like to clear out. (My partner did the transfer, so I can't tell you the specifics of what went wrong). There are numerous events titled Original and a second event of the same photos, although there may be more photos in the second event due to created duplicates that have been modified. Comparing the two events, the photo file sizes are smaller in the original set than in the second set. Why is that? For otherwise identical photos, which should I delete?
And is there any reason not to open iPhoto from the dock and delete duplicates?

(My partner did the transfer, so I can't tell you the specifics of what went wrong).
I can tell you what they did wrong - they Imported your old iPhoto library into the new one - NEVER import an iPhoto library into another iPhoto library - it does not work, created massive duplication and an unusable mess
You can use iPhoto and delete duplicates (do it in batches of 100 or less emptying the iPhoto trash and system trash every batch)
The better solution is to go back and do it correctly - If the old Mac is still available and working  trash the bad iPhoto library on the new system and Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc)  or use an external hard drive formed Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.

  • When I import pictures from my camera into iPhoto, does it import the original photo size?

I've been importing pictures from my camera & my phone into iphoto, but I'm not sure if it's automatically importing it as the original file size and not changing it into a smaller photo... Is there a way I can check this?
Thanks in advance for your help

Yes it imports a byte by byte copy of the photo.
What do you mean by 'size'? Do you mean file size? Or the dimensions of the photo (length by breadth)?
You can compare simply by exporting the original out of iPhoto
File -> Export, and set the kind to Original

  • Importing photos resolution / file size

I am doing what is turning out to be a very long movie (1.5hrs). It contains a lot of imported photos, and I think it is those that has made it such a large file (they were taken on quite a high resolution so the file sizes are around 10 - 17 MB each). The entire project is 13GB and I have not finished it yet. Consequently I haven't enough memory to save a backup, and there is no way it will fit onto a DVD. So, my questions are:
Can I / do I need to reduce the file size of the photos I have already imported? (I have Ken Burns effects on all of them - if I can reduce the file sizes will I lose all this?)
What resolution do your photos need to be for them to be of good enough quality on a movie? (so that if I want to import any more I can bring them across at a lower resolution in the first place)
And finally how on earth am I going to get this project on a disc?! Please treat me gently with this one - I have read some of the previous forum answers and don't understand them
    Thanks
    Chelle Belle

Please treat me gently with this one ...
good morning, Chellebelle, like some coffee.. ?
    'size'/better: resolution ..
a video is by standard ~640x480 pixel... you know, what a pixel is? a tiny dot. lots of dots = a picture.. lots of pictures = a video...
your stills are obviously larger, contain much more pixel. this is useful, when you apply lots of Ken Burns effects... you could lower the res in a pic processor (e.g. iPhoto allows in its Export dialog a 'lowering' or res)... but.. a lot of work, what for...?
    size of project ..
video is, by standard, 13GB/h ... no workaround for this... aside: larger harddrives...
just a word about the 'speed' and 'health' of your Mac: make sure, you have allways 10 - 15 GB free on the internal drive (you could use a nice ext. harddrive for iM projects...). going under this recommendation 'brakes' your apps & OS, finally will bring it to a total halt.
    size on DVDs ...
when iDVD detects your iM project in the 'Movies' folder (no need to share or send or export, in iM08 Apple axed that mostly useless option...), it will convert it. automatically. so, taadaahh, a ~60GB project (=lots of tape import) magically fits onto a 4.7 dvd-r ... called: converting/encoding...
if any more questions, don't hesitate to post here...
    another coffee....?
PS: you get simple, firewire connected harddrives for ~100$ ... a must for the homevideo maker..

  • Logic X won't import a 64 bit .wav file. Why?

I'm trying to import .wav files created with FF Tools into Logic for some editing, but it says the audio file is "in a 64 bit format and cannot be used". Why is this? I thought Logic X was 64-bit friendly?
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

There is also no point in using 64 bit audio files. Even 32 bit floating point is already overkill. The best choice for recording is 24 bit, for internal processing 64 bit floating point does make sense, but not for storing.
In any case, your mac comes with a very capable audio file format converting utility that can be used from the command line and reads/writes practically any audio file format you will encounter, including 64 bit wav. Type "afconvert" on your command line in terminal.app to see the options it offers. If you're not used to using the command line you might find this very uncomfortable, but it's really worth getting into it.

  • Adobe Encore DVD: Importing 96k/24-bit PCM Audio

I seem to be unable to import a 96kHz 24-bit stereo PCM audio file in to Encore 2.0 - Is there a special way of doing this? Is it even possible?
    Thanks for your help

    Hi
Thanks for the replies. Most of the people who view my videos probably have a DVD-Audio player or a decent DVD-player so I'm not really worried about the audio sounding ugly. Many of the new lower mid-range players have 96kHz DACs in them. I think a few years ago using 96kHz/24-bit for DVD-Video wouldn't have sounded as good. With the newer HD and BluRay players coming out I think they also have 96kHz/24-bit DACs as well.
For Adobe it would be one way to say Encore handles audio up to 96kHz etc... I haven't even looked at CS3.
