Importance of sleep?
Not for me -- for my iMac.
I know it will save energy/money. But I'm wondering if it will also "save" my iMac -- i.e., prolong its life.
Whenever it sleeps, it loses my wireless home network connection and I have to log back in. Not a big deal but a minor annoyance.
I'm using Mozy for offsite backup so if/when it goes to sleep in the midst of an automatic backup, the backup stop.
I'll sleep the monitor and put the hard drive to sleep when possible but are the serious reasons to not put the computer to sleep?
The manual that came with your model comp will answer your sleep questions.
"Whenever it sleeps, it loses my wireless home network connection and I have to log back in. Not a big deal but a minor annoyance."

Alternative to Thread.sleep() function
Dear Experts,
I am developing an application that requires sleep times on the order of nanoseconds. I tried using the Thread.sleep(long milliseconds, int nanoseconds) function, but I found that the smallest time the function will sleep for is 1 millisecond (i.e sleep(1,0) sleeps for the same amount of time as sleep(0,1)). I am pretty sure that the smallest increment you can set a timer to is one millisecond as well. Are there functions out there that can output nanosecond delays?
ThanksI am developing an application that requires sleep
ep times on the order of nanosecondsThread.sleep() gives you whatever the OS exposes. If the OS doesn't support sub-millisecond sleep times, then you won't get it.
More importantly, Thread.sleep() does not guarantee sleep times. If the OS scheduler decides that there are a dozen other processes with higher priority (or a dozen other threads in your process), you may find that you've slept for many milliseconds, maybe even seconds.
If you want more info, I recall www.javaworld.com having an article on sub-millisecond timing. You might want to check there to see if they say anything about sleep times. -
Hold the report until time out
I want to set a time loop in after parameter form by waiting 2 minutes to run the report. But it seems the loop is not working.
Hi Janice
I'm not sure which version of Reports you are running. In case you are running Reports 9i, you may use Java Importer feature to get this done. This is how:
Create a java class that has a static method:
public class Sleeper {
public static void Sleep(long duration)
Thread.sleep(duration);
Compile Sleeper.java file and place the class file in REPORTS_CLASSPATH
In Reports 9i Builder, import the Sleeper class.
In the place where you want to hold, call SLEEPER.SLEEP(1000*60*5);

BPEL not started until time out
Hi,
In my BPEL Process,I have flowN activity, each branch(each flow) has HumanTask activity which sends mail & get response from the assignee.
When I invoke the process, it gets started but not send any mail until the timeout.
If the process timed out and returns exception : com.oracle.bpel.client.delivery.ReceiveTimeOutException, then everything works as expected.
I have set the time out under 2 files transaction-manager.xml & domain.xml.
I'm using SOA 10.1.3.1
And in my orion-ejb-jar.xml also contains some timeout option (default is 160) which I left without change.
Thanks.Hi Janice

IPhone replacement / repair
I've only had my iPhone 6 months, haven't dropped it once and it's always been in a sock or a case.
It's got two hairline cracks around the silent switch and dock connector, but more importantly the sleep button is falling off - haven't lost it yet, but if I do I won't be able to turn it on/off
Could I get an instore replacement on warranty? I'm in the UK (On O2, prefer to not go through they're "repair" proceess") and my closest applestore is over 50miles away so would like to know before I set offYou should be able to get an in-store replacement. In fact, iPhones aren't repaired, even when you mail them in - they are replaced regardless, usually with a refurbished unit (and the defective one is sent back to the factory to be refurbished).
-
I was warned and I went straight to the site and they were gone. I didnt was any time. Either way, there should be a way to either store or restore such items. Have you ever lost pictures that were so important to you that you couldnt sleep or eat for some time. I have and it wasnt fun. I'm glad that you were able to get yours unlike some of us.
I am still wondering why iTunes tries to confuse me every time I try to make changes in my preferences, telling me that I "don't have enough permissions", although I am the administrator.
That's clearly a fault. Whether it's an iTunes problem or a Windows problem I can't say at this time. If you search the Using iTunes for Windows forum for "permissions", you should find threads that can help you sort out this problem.
Then, changes to the format are not obvious, and I get no notice that I am burning music files as data.
If you click on a playlist and look at the lower-right of the iTunes window, it says right there what format it will use to burn the playlist. -
I have a password problem. After importing data and settings from one MacBook Pro to a new one, I have to put my iCloud password in when re-starting the new computer, but the password from the old computer in when waking the computer from sleep. I want to use my iCloud password on both computers consistently. How can I fix this?
The only other place to change a password for the computer login is in Users & Groups preferences. But I don't really know enough here to fix your problem. You can try fixing the keychain:
iCloud- Frequently asked questions about iCloud Keychain
Tutorial: Resolving Keychain Issues
If you can't access your keychain, or forget your password If you can't get into your keychain file because you've forgotten your password or the keychain file appears to be corrupt, there are a couple of options.
First, if you've forgotten your password, you can use the "Keychain First Aid" utility to make the keychain password the same as the login password. This can be accomplished via the following process:
1. Open Keychain Access (located in Applications/Utilities)
2. Go to the "Keychain Access" menu and select "Preferences"
3. Click the "First Aid" tab
4. Make sure the "Synchronize login keychain password" box is checked
5. Close the Preferences window
6. Go to the "Keychain Access" menu and select "Keychain First Aid"
7. Enter your username and password
8. Click the "Repair" button
The second option is to completely delete your keychain then recreate it. This routine is useful if your keychain appears to be corrupt or otherwise inaccessible. This can be accomplished as follows:
1. Launch Keychain Access (located in Applications/Utilities)
2. Click "Show Keychains" in the lower-left corner of the window.
3. Select the problematic keychain from the left-hand pane.
4. Navigate to the "File" menu and select "Delete Keychain '(name of keychain)'"
5. Check all options for deletion and press "OK"
6. Create a new keychain by going to the "File" menu, then "New" and selecting
"New Keychain"
7. You can now make this keychain your default if you desire by selecting it, then
going to the "File" menu and selecting "Make '(name of keychain)' Default"
Login as root and perform repair In some cases, problems with keychains can only be resolved when logged in as the root user.
First, you want to enable the root user:
1. OS X Mountain Lion: Enable and disable the root user
2. OS X Lion: Enable and disable the root user
3. Mac OS X 10.6: Enabling the root user
4. Enabling and using the "root" user in Mac OS X
After enabling the root user, and logging in under this account, again open Keychain Access. First attempt repairs using Keychain First Aid, and failing that, delete then recreate the keychain as described above while logged in as root.
Persistently asked for stored passwords If you are persistently asked for passwords in various applications that you have specified should be remembered in a keychain, your "login" keychain may not be active for one reason or another.
Navigate to ~/Library/Keychains/ (this is the Library folder inside your user's home folder). Find the file named "login.keychain" and double-click it.
Failing that, select the "login" keychain within the Keychain Access application and make sure it is the default keychain by going to the "File" menu and selecting "Make 'Login' Default"
Turn off Keychain synchronization in applications having problems If specific applications are experiencing issues when accessing password-protected material, the Keychain may be to blame.

When I import to itunes my computer sleeps or shuts down.
When I import to itunes, and work in another program, my computer either sleeps or shuts down. Sleeping is much more frequent but it's extremely frustrating. Obviously I didn't use to do this. I suspect it is as a result of an upgrade, but am unsure. any suggestions would be very gratefull accepted.
-Ty [email protected]Not it. Thanks. I tried it, so thanks for the tip, but I get the same error message. That I need to authorize this computer to get the purchases. I guess it's not really an error message. But It will not let me proceed any further. Once again I have deauthorized and this is the only computer that is authorized for this account.

My 'Sleep image' is 2GB, is it important and can I delete it?
Having used disk inventory to analyze my HDD usage, I found a file called sleepimage and it's 2GB in size. I guess it has something to do with the contents of RAM when the HD goes to sleep but I'm not sure.
I recon that if that's what it is then even if do delete it a new one will be created in its place - is this correct??
BenYes, this is where the contents of your RAM are written for Safe Sleep. Leave it there.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302477
Yes, a new one will be created unless you disable Safe Sleep via Terminal commands.
Hope this helps... -
Mac Mini repeatedly refuses to wake from sleep
Please to anyone I really need your help.
First let me preface you that I know my console log is incredibly long, and let me know if there is a way to make them more manageable and I will update.
Also let me know which other logs or screen shots or active programs I can provide
I have a 2011 2.5 ghz Mac mini i5 with AMD Radeon 6630M
I have customized this with a 256gb SSD and 2TB HDD as well as 16gb RAM.
I also have a Monoprice drawing tablet attached.
My keyboard and trackpad are bluetooth
I am running yosemite 10.10.1.
10.10 was installed with a clean install.
So here is the issue:
The computer was working perfectly, and then, I can't identify a specific time, it started to just occasionally refuse to wake up from sleep (monitor off, won't activate).
Interestingly it seems to have only started happening AFTER I purchased an apple TV which I use to mirror my screen for video playback. Prior to that I had two mac mini's (one hooked up to TV as a media center and one desktop). This configuration resulted in no freezing issues for a few months.
My parents wanted to get an apple desktop so I ended up giving them my mac mini media center and decided to try using an apple TV mirroring with my mac mini instead.
Now the computer seems to work perfectly fine for a day or two and then it just refuses to wake from sleep.
I do a hard reset and it boots up with no issue and everything works perfectly for a couple days (or less), then it just won't wake from sleep at all.
This can occur when still mirrored to apple TV, but also occurs when it is not.
Background programs tend to be: dropbox, google drive, evernote, flycut, Teamviewer, safari and google chrome
Additionally I have noticed that if the computer has been on for a couple days, when trying got mirror it becomes very choppy.
Activity monitor identifies no CPU or memory hogs. (can post if needed)
The console does seem to show A LOT of issues, but I can't make any sense of them, and I have tried searching google for what they might mean.

My 2010 27" iMac running Yosemite won't wake up from sleep. -
Macbook crash on sleep after disconnection from cinema display
Hello,
I bought a black macbook core 2 duo a few months back as a replacement for a 1.5 GHz 12" powerbook G4, and I'm beginning to wonder if I made a terrible mistake as the Macbook frequently crashes on sleep which has caused a major disruption to the way I use my computer.
My work pattern involves pulling the computer out of its bag and opening it for between a few minutes and a couple of hours, before putting it back to sleep by closing it and shoving it back in its bag again, usually in a hurry, and usually several times each day. If I'm working at my desk, I pull it out of its bag, plug a keyboard, mouse and cinema display into it before waking it in lid-closed mode via the keyboard or mouse. I later sleep it via the power key, before immediately disconnecting the cables and putting it back in its bag.
The powerbook used to cope with this admirably, sometimes for two months at a stretch between restarts, and always with many applications and windows open. I had learned to expect that when I open the lid of my computer everything is there just as I left it, and more importantly that I didn't need to worry about saving everything before closing the lid.
The Macbook frequently crashes on sleep (regardless of whether I close the lid, use the key or menu or leave it until it sleeps itself), and have I narrowed it down to something that usually happens on one of the first few sleeps after I disconnect the cinema display. The macbook's backlight goes out on sleep but the display does not switch off (it can be seen, frozen as it was, if a light is shone on the display) nor the hard disk spin down, and the only response of any sort I can get is I can switch the white LED on and off by opening and closing the lid. This behaviour has always been the same regardless of whether safe sleep is enabled or not, although I have disabled safe sleep as I do not have the time or inclination to sit around waiting for 15 seconds for the disk to stop spinning each time I close the lid.
My question is, is there something wrong with my computer or is this normal for Macbooks where an external display is used? And if it is normal for macbooks is it something that is likely to resolve itself with future MacOs or firmware updates, or is it more fundamental than that?Hello again,
It is hard to suggest something to do in this case, since intermittent issues are really difficult to diagnose. If I were you, I might try doing an Archive and Install from the install dvd that came with your macbook, as well as verifying the drive using Disk Utility on the install dvd. These are just suggestions and I don't know if they will change anything, but at least Apple may get more info out of knowing these were done to try and resolve the issue. If Archiving and Installing doesn't fix the problem (an OS software problem) and disk utility doesn't report any problems, it most likely warrants a trip to Apple. You definitely shouldn't have to put up with worrying about whether your computer will work or not every time you close the lid. -
Why do I get a blank white screen on wakeup from sleep?
When my iMac wakes from s sleep lasting more than 10 minutes, I get a completely white screen. Everything is working well: when I move the cursor to the screen bottom, my toolbar appears, and when I click on an app icon, the part of the screen in and around its windows refreshes. (If I click on Launchpad, the entire screen refreshes). Is this a new bug? Advice on fixes, please?
God Bless,

My Mac Mini goes to sleep when I turn off my TV.
Hello and thanks in advance for all help. I have a Intel mac mini that I currently have hooked up via DVI/DVI cable to my Sony LCD television. I recently upgraded the OS to 10.5 from 10.4. The issue that I am having after the OS upgrade has to do with the Mac going to sleep after I turn the TV off. It also goes to sleep if I set up the display to sleep after a period of time even if I have the computer itself set to never sleep. Right now I have the computer set to never sleep and the display to never sleep but when we turn the TV off the computer goes to sleep anyway. The reason why I need the computer to stay awake is because we use a Magicjack at our home for our local phone service and it is plugged into one of the USB ports on the computer. If the computer goes to sleep we loose our home phone service. I am wondering what could be causing the computer to sleep when the display is turned off. When I upgraded to 10.5 I did a clean install and not a upgrade.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks very much to all. Thanks so much for your help. This fixed things perfect. The only thing I may add for anyone else that has this issue is that it is important to reconnect the power cable to the computer first and then after a few seconds reconnect all of your other cables. The first time I tried it I reconnected the power cable last and it still didn't fix things. I gave it another try reconnecting the power cable first and now everything is perfect.
Thanks again for your help,

Why does my iMac lose internet connection when importing music via iTunes Home sharing?
Hi, I tried searching for a solution but could not find anything to solve my problem.
I recently purchased an iMac and am attempting to import my iTunes library from my old Windows 7 laptop using the Home sharing function. As far as I can tell, everything works fine - both computers are connected to my wireless network, I can see and connect to the library, I can begin importing my music but after 5 or so minutes my iMac will stop transferring music and I can no longer access any internet sites, even though i seem to be connected to the internet. Turning wifi on and off allows me to access the internet again. I have tried many solutions, but nope seem to have helped. Both computers have the latest version of iTunes. I have tried disabling the firewall on my router, resetting the router, resetting both computers, reopening iTunes.
Does anybody have any ideas as to what could solve the problem? Thank youjjcardil
I've noticed that Lion automatically reconnects in about 5-10 seconds after being waken from sleep mode.
Make sure that you've set you Network connections up properly in System Preferences and then, after waking from sleep mode, wait to see if it automatically reconnects.
In System Preferences:
Network / Wi-Fi:
Make sure "Network Name" is specified.
Advanced:
Make sure your "Preferred Networks" are specified. (The order is significant).
Also make sure that the "Remember networks this computer has joined" is checked.
Also, you may want to try playing with the "Energy Saver" Settings in System Preferences, perhaps disabling sleep mode but turning off the screen (although I don't prefer this method since it kind of defeats the whole purpose of having a sleep mode IMHO).

Possible reason for the iMac G5 with 10.4.3 Sleep Problems
Ok first off let me say that I got this new iMac G5 20" about 4 days ago. It's wonderful. If anyone out there is holding out for the intel machines, don't wait, get a G5. It's a fantastic machine. Now on to the meat of the subject. The story goes like this; I hooked up my Plextor PVR with eyeTV to my iMac to see how well it would do (been using it with a P4 Windoze XP machine and my iBook G4 14" with no problems). It worked just great. No problems with the iMac, the PVR or any of my other addons (including the boatload of software I migrated over from the iBook). So I set up EyeTV to record some stuff while I was asleep. It's supposed to wake up the Mac, record the shows then the Mac goes back to sleep. Easy huh? Well the wakeup, record part went just fine but the Mac wouldn't go back to sleep. Perplexed (actually thrilled, this is where I have my most fun with new machines, figuring out why they aren't working correctly) I did all the standard "I can't get my Mac to sleep automatically" things. You know, blow away all the plist files that have anything to do with powermanagement and autowake, reset NVRAM from OF, reset the PRAM (3 times just like the old days), reset the SMU, blow away all the Bluetooth plist files, etc, etc. Did them all, don't suggest any, I did them all I swear, really. I've been through this kind of thing before. One big difference with this iMac. Nothing and I mean nothing would work to fix the problem. The only way the bad boy would sleep is by hitting the Power button for a second or selecting "Sleep" from the Apple menu. Hmmmm. Spent the better part of a morning reading every thread here about peoples problems like mine. One post and I mean exactly one had something I hadn't tried. I rebooted the Mac in Safe Mode (hold the shift key down while it boots until you get the login screen with the red text "Safe Mode".) I forgot that OSX even did that. Logged in as myself (normal login but still in safe mode) and low and behold the thing would sleep automatically! I repeated this (boot in normal mode, boot in safe mode) many times. Every single time the Mac would sleep from safe mode but not from normal mode. Tells me it's software not hardware. In each mode I run "Activity Monitor" and save a list of the running processes to a text file. Now compare them and shutdown each process that is different one at a time. To make this story somewhat shorter (heh) I finally found that I could consistantly make the machine sleep or not sleep by killing the "mdimport" process and restarting it. This has to do with Spotlight. To be exact, it's the process that imports Metadata into Spotlights data list (I'm no expert, have a basic understanding of this). So on a hunch I ran the terminal and entered the command to delete then rebuild Spotlights databases, "mdutil -E /". Then I let Spotlight rebuild that databases and rebooted. Guess what? The iMac sleeps perfectly now, go figure. I did this once so far and the Mac has been working correctly now for about 5 hours. I've got a feeling that the problem will come back. Especially if it's an inherent problem in Spotlight and the 10.4.3 upgrade. I don't seem to have this problem with 10.4 or earlier. Long post I know but I thought it could help someone out. Please post any comments. I'd like to know if what I did is coincidence (I really don't think so since I reproduced it many times) or not.

iBook G4 1Gig, iMac G5 2.1 Gig, iMac 266 Mac OS X (10.4.3) iMac 266 running 10.3.6, been using Macs since the '80sRight guy's i to have researched this problem
concerning my auto sleep problem.I started off by
following Joeaux's original post by safe
booting, noting what was running in the activity
monitor, booting normaly and again noting what was
running now.I eliminated the same processes that were
running from both boots, and then started quiting one
by one, the extra processes, from the normal boot, in
activity monitor.Once you quit a process, allow the
computer to try to go to sleep i.e set energy saver
to 1minute and wait to see what happens.I tried the "
mdimport"as of Joeaux but this was not my problem. In
my case the sleep problem was down to two
applications called N67U_ButtonManager and
N124U_ButtonManager.These are for use with my Canon
scanner.I also noted that if i left the scanner
connected to the computer this would also stop it
going to sleep, even after deleting the two
applications.Hope this helps!
Thank you now i know that those login items are for my scanner, and not logic audio i am a little less angry(Logic is now an apple application but the version I run was from the emagic days and i presumed that the button managers were from this app as it was the oldest bit of software running on my machine) By the way any apps that may cause a problem like this are more than likely simply residing in your user login items and can be disabled from there permanently as far as i can see.
