Imported AIFF audio sounds bad when placed in sequence (HD Editing)

I've recently switched from DV-NTSC editing to HD (set-up for HDV 1080i60 in FCP). At first I had problems getting Final Cut to capture the video, but read a thread that suggested to trash my Final Cut preferences folder. I did, and it corrected my capture problem, but now I have a new problem. When I import .aif (or AIFF however you want to call it) it sounds fine when I play it in the FCP viewer, but when I drag it into the timeline it sounds choppy, a bit slow, distorted, and it's peaking bad. I made sure my QT conversion to AIFF is 44.1 kHz 16 bit Sterio, but doesn't make any difference. I've messed with levels, the audio playback settings, and a few other things that haven't helped. I've spent hours on discussion threads, and finally gave up to ask you experts out there. I would appreciate any advice!
PowerBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.8) Final Cut Pro 5.0.4, QT 7.1.3

Even at 48kHz, 16 bit Stereo...same issue. To me, Final Cut shouldn't really be that finicky with whether the AIFF is mono, sterio, or even the bit rate for that matter. The big question to me is, why didn't Final Cut care when my default setting was NTSC DVPRO, but now it cares when my default setting is HDV 1080i60? I see that my 1080i video (audio) is at 48 kHz, 16 bit sterio (which plays fine in the sequence) but the imported audio (same format) does not. I'm stumped.

  • Siri sounds bad when using Bluetooth

Siri sounds bad when using Bluetooth, but the phone calls sound great.

Can a few of you help me with a test? I have a Jawbone 2 & a Jawbone Icon. Both exhibit a strange behavior with my iPhone 4. If either of these headsets are on, paired & connected AND a call is answered or initiated, things are fine.
When it all goes downhill is in this scenario:
My headset is OFF. I receive or make a call and mid-call, I decide to turn on the headset (which I keep off to save battery). The Jawbone connects and automatically switches the iPhone from PHONE to JAWBONE. This is all normal right? Okay here's the problem. The call quality has static, sounds muffled and the caller tells me I sound like I'm in a tin can. If I then switch back to the phone (through the iPhone page of Sources) and then back again, to the Jawbone, most times--quality is back to normal. Obviously this is not something we all want to be doing. Can anyone do this test with their headset .. any brand and even some of you with Icons? It would be good to know if the culprit is the Bluetooth Headset or the iPhone. Remember, it's important that you make a call with your Bluetooth headset in the OFF position and then turn it on mid-call to use it.

Seems I just have to get used to the sound/tone...Which operator version of the phone you have?Could you record (from other phone) a short video of this sound and put it here (or to YT or any other service)?
My phone has no operator incorporated in it.

  • Audio sounds phased when playing in the editor.

Using FCP X 10.1 for the first time. The only thing that seems odd is that the audio sounds all phased. There was a lot of rain noise on the audio track but the original and transcoded clips all sound normal. Only clips playing in FCP sound odd. I don't have noise reduction on even though it sounds a lot like it is. Ideas?

OK, I found it. This was after I restarted the machine so I don't know if that is related but I found that the individual clips in the browser had noise reduction turned on. All of them. I did have Analyze and Fix Audio Problems checked on the import dialog as that was recommended so between that and the rain that must have done it.
It's funny that when I checked the audio for the clips on the time line they DID NOT indicate that noise removal was ON but when I turned it off on all the individual clips in the browser the clips on the timeline then DID indicate that it was ON. I had expected that turning it off on the clips would not affect the ones already on the time line but not seeing the indicater checked originally was a surprise.
So mystery solved. Take note all.

  • Other audio sounds bad

    Hello,
When i am talking to someone on skype, othe audio sounds very bad and quite. Is this fixable?
    Best wishes,
    MAXman21000

To be effective, it's best to have the noise floor at or below -42dB and vocals riding around -15/18dB to get that clean separation expected from a treated room.
Look for at least a two second gap in your recording that has just the noise in it to capture a sample (right click, capture noise print).  I generally record 10 seconds of the rooms ambiance just for this purpose.
Much will depend on your initial capture and settings will vary and while the example below is a good starting point to tweak from there
it's best that you consider using a log curve, and add points to trace noise print contour to follow.
Back off the reduction settings and use small numbers for smoothing and transition width to avoid smearing/watery or tinny sounding results.
Like SteveG mentioned, using multiple passes in subtle steps works for many.  Experiment and let your ears be your guide.
Depending on the situation, its best leaving some slight noise in then try to remove it all and risk degrading the vocals or creating un-natural sounding, abrupt transitions from floor to voice.
Especially if you'll mix in a bed of music or the final result winds up as a compressed file on the net and that little extra effort gets lost anyway.

  • Photos look different (bad) when placed in InDesign CS4

I'm having a problem in that my photos look bad when viewed in InDesign. I labor on my photos until they're looking perfect in Photoshop -- with just the right color balance and tonalities -- but when I place them in ID, they look much darker and redder, or oversaturated. Then I look at them again in Photoshop, and they look fine. What gives? Which program is showing the real state of the photo? Btw, the photos are using the same color profile in both programs and the monitor is unchanged b/w viewings.
I'm wondering if anyone has had a similar experience and what I can do about this? It makes me very nervous to see my photos looking so bad in InDesign, where I prepare my layouts for offset printing. Will they print as I see them in Photoshop or will they print as I see them in InDesign (which would be dreadful)? At this point I'm hesitant to make further adjustments and hoping it's the Photoshop view that's correct.
But why is this happening in the first place? Is there some setting I should be fixing? Or is there a color issue or incompatiblity b/w Photoshop and InDesign that I'm unaware of?
I'm using ID and Photoshop CS4 on Mac OSX 10.4.11
Hope someone out there can help me with this issue.
    Thanks in advance!
    Scarlett

There's a discrepancy in the way Photoshop and ID display images on the screen. I wasn't aware of this before.
If your display performance is set at High Quality there's no significant difference in the way color is displayed between PS and ID. The screen capture linked below shows a CMYK file with no profile assigned, side by side in ID and PS. The ID file has no profile assigned and the CMYK Working Spaces are the same for both programs:
    http://www.zenodesign.com/scripts/IDPS.png
You can check the RGB values of the screen capture in Photoshop and there is virtually no difference—I could only find an occasional 1 gray level in 1 channel shift.
If you are seeing a color change with a High Quality display setting then chances are you have a color management issue.
Syncing your Color Settings doesn't guarantee matching color between the programs because you are just syncing the program's Working Spaces, and they don't necessarily color manage the documents (assigned profiles override the Working Space). If you are assigning profiles in PS, the assigned profiles need to match your ID doc's assigned profile (which could be different then the ID Working Space)

  • Custom step to Open edit expression when placed in sequence

In TestStand 3.5 is it possible to create a custom step type (from a copy of label step type) that automatically opens the "edit label step.." GUI when placed in a sequence?
    Thanks,
    Jason
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    All -
Why not just capitalize upon the capabilities of the OnNewStep substep?
Create your new step type (a copy of your existing Label step).  Notice that it already has as its substep an Edit step - this is what is invoked when you launch the Edit Label Step dialog.
Now, create a new Custom substep and name it (this is mandatory) OnNewStep.  Specify its Module and mimic the Edit Substep exactly.
Now, whenever you create a new Step instance of this type, the OnNewStep substep will be invoked!  And you don't even have to modify the CommonSubsteps.dll.
A cool trick - this is how we do things like programmatically create End steps for many Flow Control steps...

  • Apple TV sound bad when home sharing from Itunes

    Hello All,
When I go through the Apple TV menus to Computers and choose my library to play my music it sounds really bad. Almost a "tinny" or metallic sound and the voices sound faded back. Not sure how to fix this or if this is the best way to play my music through the TV. I do not have an airport yet (saving for a time machine) so I am running through a Verizon Fios wireless router. Not sure that is matters. Any help would be great. Thank
    RJ

Check the menus to see if you have Sound Check enabled for audio - if so turn it off.
Also, try streaming using Airplay to AppleTV from itunes (equalizer and other effects will be added).

  • Baffling bug: Audio-ONLY loops when placing MP4 in composition timeline

I have a :55 long .mp4 file containing motion graphics and a narrated voiceover.
I want to place that file into a composition.
I can preview the footage and see that the audio and the motion graphics are synced properly.
Without doing ANYTHING else, I drag the .mp4 file from the Project Library panel into the composition's Timeline panel.
When I twirl open the .mp4 audio waveform, I see that the audio loops the first fifteen seconds for the duration of the video!
The video, however, does NOT loop. It plays as expected...
I have no idea how this is happening. There is no way to time remap the audio FROM the video while placing into a composition. And, for the record, there is no time remapping applied to the track that it could be inheriting...
How would AE come to determine that it should loop the first 15 seconds of audio while playing the 55 seconds of video?
    Totally stumped. Nearing client deadline.

    Thanks Dave,
So... this MP4 is being generated by a separate AE file—essentially, I'm flattening a bunch of content to then include as a background in a templatized AE file. I'm exporting the MP4 from AE CC, and then putting it onto an AE CS6 project file...
There is a bunch of complicated reasons why we're doing this... none of which falls under my expertise, but it shouldn't really have anything to do with why/how the audio is spontaneously limiting it to a 15 second loop. We've tried creating a new AE CS6 project and the audio does the same thing. So... our next step is to try re-exporting the MP4 from the source project file, and then see what happens...
I'd post project files, but we're dealing with NDA's etc. I wish I could.

The pitch and tempo issue sounds like a sample rate problem, but I thought iMovie audio was recorded at 48K which would make it play lower and slow in GB. For background on this:

You can play with the Gate effect to cut out software sounds, but that would only be during the silent passages.

  • Speaker sounds bad when not using headphones

I wanted to listen to my music on my iPhone so I started to play a song, the first song sounded fine. By the middle of the second song, the quality of the sound got really bad...full of static, almost like I had bad reception. I switched to the headset and it sounds fine.
I guess the iPod part of the phone wasn't meant to be listened to w/out using a headset?

I guess the iPod part of the phone wasn't meant to be listened to w/out using a headset?
Not at all. I do so often without any problems and when listening to music via the speaker at the office, I need to keep the volume fairly low so you may have a defective speaker which is covered under warranty. I also watch movies using the speaker for sound when not in a noisy environment.
If you live near an Apple Store, I suggest making an appointment to have this checked and if you don't, give AppleCare a call - (800) 694-7466.
You might try a Reset first by pressing and holding the Home key and Sleep/Wake or On/Off key simultaneously until you see the Apple logo and then release ignoring the slide to turn off prompt when doing so. This does not affect any data or settings.

  • Audio stays in when I make a video edit?

iMovie HD 6.03. When I make an edit- crop or split at playhead, the video is removed but the original audio stays (thus being totally out of sync). Weird? Also When I play a clip while it is still in the clips pane there is no audio?

  • Audio clips change when moved from sequence to sequence in FCP7

Working on a documentary piece within FCP7 and am having problems with moving audio from one sequence to another. Both sequences have the same settings, but when I copy the audio clip and paste it into the new sequence, the audio that pastes is from the same clip but is not what I copied. Does anyone know why this is happening and/or how to fix this?

Just to back up Michael. The native sample rate for video is 48khz. To work at anything other than that is to ask for problems.

  • No Audio via Blackmagic when using Blackmagic Sequence Presets

    Hallo Everyone,
I'm using Premiere 5 on Win7/64Bit with a Blackmagic Decklink using the latest drivers (10.3.1).
When i use the Blackmagic Sequence Presets, i have perfect video but no audio. When I'm scrubbing through the timeline, i can see the Audio meters showing a signal, but when i press play, there is no audio visible and audible. The clips definitely contain audio, i also tried it with the testtone generated by Premiere.
When i make a new sequence (in the same project) and using other presets (non Blackmagic-Presets), then i have audio, but no video (which is clear to me). Audio out via Blackmagic is also working in any other Windows Software.
I reinstalled the Production Premium Bundle and reinstalled the Blackmagic drivers afterwards, but nothing helped.
    I appreciate any suggestions.
    Regards

  • After Effects CS5 crashes when impoting AIFF audio.

    Hi,
AE CS5 keeps crashing me when I try to import AIFF audio.  I've tried different clips rendered from different sources, but still it's crashing.  The files are small and I have no problem processing HD video, so it's not a performance issue.  Anyone having similar problems that might lend me some advice?
I'm running a MacPro 2 X 2.66 GHz Doal -Core Intel Xeon with 8 GB ram.
    Update:
VERY STRANGE!  I closed that project and created a new one and presto - audio imports fine.  When I re-open the old project it still crashes when importing.  I guess that's a work-around, so problem solved (?)...
