Imported Audio Shows Pan -1

We use ProTools for audio and was wondering why the clips show up in FCP 4.5 with a Pan of -1 when I know full well there's no pan effect? It doesn't SOUND panned but it makes me nervous.
Also, in ProTools, the mastering shows the sound pegged below red, but FCP sees it WAY over. We usually have to knock it down to -4 to -7 to keep it mostly out of the red. Any ideas or is it a "calibration" issue.
Thanks for any tips. Thanks.

Alex,
I'm an experienced Pro Tools user as well, however pretty rookie when it comes to FCP. However, based on the last post, it sounds like -1 might be the "correct" setting, where your left channel is panned 100% left and right channel is 100% right. I say this because if a pan setting of +1 has the channels reversed, then -1 should be the opposite, which is exactly where you want them. Pan setting of 0 would be right in the middle, with essentially a mono file.
Just a guess. As far as the metering issue goes - is FCP and digital scale or VU type scale? I can't remember. That may have something to do with it.

  • Macbook pro 17" digital audio option not showing in Audio preference pane

I seem to be having a problem with the Digital Audio setup with my macbook Pro 17"  2006, running Snow Leopard, when I go to select the SPDIF option in the Audio Prefernce Pane it doesn't give that option!, like it did in Leopard and Tiger of which I had running on this Macbook pro.
Running Snow Leopard this option seem to be missing, I looked in the Midi Setup etc in Utilities as that how I worked around it in Tiger as well as Leopard.
I also have the same problem with my other newer and last of the Macbook Pro 17" model as ti doesn't show in the Audio Preference pane either. Is this an omission in the OS or with my hardware as had no proble,s connectiong to a Sony MD and Tascam MD rack system before. I can always go back to using the older OS if thats the problem but find it hard to believe that All of my Laptops 15" & 17" are all up the swany with the same SPDIF problem.

also posted this question in the MacBook forum. Problem eventually solved by trashing iTunes preference files & the iTunes application, then re-installing iTunes.

  • Why can't I import audio content from a Pana LX5 MTS file?

    Hi,
Awesome as the new video capability is in CS6 (the ability to add image filters is to die for!), I have encountered a problem.
I can import the video component from a Panasonic LX5 .MTS AVCHD Lite video file. But the audio isn't included and I can't bring the audio content into an audio track by importing separately.
When I import H264 .MOV, taken with my Canon 7D, audio is included in the video import and I can also import audio from another, similar file to an audio track.
Is there some special trick involved with AVCHD Lite format video? Has anyone else succeeded in importing audio from an .MTS file?
    Kind regards,

You aren't the only person: also fails for me, Windows 7 64-bit. Audio doesn't play in CS6 Bridge either, although audio plays in Windows Media, so I assume system has correct codec installed.
I think this might be a bug, here is a .mts file for others (or Adobe) to test with: http://www.newae.com/00012.MTS

  • Flash with CS3 - Mac  - Importing Audio

    Greetings,
Creative Suite 3, OS-X (Possibly Leopard as well, it's
    dual-boot).
We're working on our first few flash animations, nothing
heavy or anything. Every time we try to import audio (MP3 or WAV),
the computer tries for a while (shows the little clock icon and a
status bar) then displays a message that says, "One or more files
were not imported because there were problems reading them."
We did some searching and found some info about what Flash
does and doesn't like with reference to audio here:
    http://www.adobe.com/go/tn_16235
    and here:
    http://www.technowledgebase.com/2007/06/20/flash-wont-import-mp3-or-wav-files/
OK, it's a wav file, so we tried saving it as PCM style wav
file. We followed a suggestion for using WavePad (This is a mac,
not Windows) making sure the file was PCM here:
    http://nch.invisionzone.com/index.php?showtopic=4005
Unfortunately, even with it saved as PCM (Though we're not
sure if the sample rate may be part of it), we still get the error
    message.

  • The audio file is not recognized by Logic. Can't import audio files?

    Hi,
The audio files are on my desktop. Logic 9.1.1 will not recognize them and gives me this message when I try to drag and drop OR Import Audio File OR use Audio Bin.
As far as I know, I am using wave files (extension .wav). So what could be the problem. Here's a picture of how the files look on my desktop.
The regular silver and blue iTunes icons look like this when I Get Info:
The black iTunes icons look like this when I Get Info:
Importantly, the black iTunes (only 2 out of the 18 audio files) are the ones that actually import. Does it have something to do with the fact that it shows under "More Info > Audio Channels 1" vs. the silver and blue iTunes .wav files (which do NOT have this)?
Furthermore, here is the process I used to get the audio files in the first place. On my PC, I exported audio files from my Ableton Live project onto a thumbdrive. I copied the audio files from my thumbdrive to my Mac. Maybe this had something to do with it.
Also, as you can see, under Sharing and Permissions > there is only "read and write" for all names, so it's not a permissions thing.
    Thanks.

    Thanks for your reply.
+Can you play them as Preview (select in Finder, hit spacebar)?+ No. The black iTunes icons play with no sound and the silver and blue iTunes icons do not even come up in Preview at all.
+Will iTunes play them?+ Only the black iTunes files (2 out of the 18). When I click on a silver and blue icon'd file, it will not even open in iTunes.
why on the desktop? it was just a temporary thing. I was not able to pull them into my Audio Bin. I tried what you suggested. I put the files in the Audio Files folder of my project. When I go to open them from within Logic by Import Audio File, they are visible but greyed out. I don't use the desktop except for testing stuff like you do.
+How was the thumb drive formatted? FAT32 or other DOS-format, or Mac OS Extended (HFS)?
+the extension is not where apps look to recognize an audio file format, it is the header data. Some audio programs can read RAW audio files, but more about that after your reply to this one.+ It is formatted MS-DOS (FAT 32).
(*I wrote all this stuff above while I was working and waiting for the PC to write to my thumbdrive again*******finally I got everything to show up.
I loaded the files again from the thumbdrive. This time they were all in the black iTunes format, and I put them directly in the Audio Files folder like you suggested. After some doing everything works fine. Weird.
    Thanks!

  • Import Audio Files Into iPhoto

This is really a 2 part question.
I have been recording a few sound clips with a small digital pocket recorder that are family stories like "Remeber when Aunt Mildred lost her teeth?" etc. So far the only way I have found to get them into the Mac is as a Quick Time movie. It works. Naturally if there is a better way I'm interested. So the first question is: What are the ways to import small sound clips (Garage Band is my least favorite option).
On a regular QT movie, I can import them into iPhoto. But iPhoto refuses to import audio only movies. Having these in iPhoto would let me catalog these sound files in iPhoto along with the other photos and other digital camera short movies. So the second question is: How can I import sound clips into iPhoto?
By the way, setting "Open With" in the information viewer of a file [Command I] to open with iTunes get these clips into iTunes just fine. Why not a movie into iPhoto?
Has anybody else crossed this bidge before?
iMac 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Long Live the Mac!
iMac 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Long Live the Mac!
iMac 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Long Live the Mac!

    Boris
There are various apps that might help with working with these sound files. What format does your recorder use. Personally I use Audacity as a sound editor (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) it's Open Source. For capturing sound that's otherwise difficult to get I use Audio Hijack (http://www.rogueamoeba.com).
When QT saves the files they are saved as .mov files, and while the Finder calls them QucikTime Movies, they are not, and iPhoto will not import them unless they have a video element. Of course, they import perfectly into iTunes.
    Some suggested solutions:
Make slide shows of Aunt Mildred, and for a soundtrack use the story of unfortunate teeth, simply by pointing to the relevant track in iTunes.
Make a movie. If you have quicktime pro it's quite easy and fast to paste some pics of Aunt Mildred to the Soundtrack. It's a little slower - but you have more options - to do it with iMovie or with PhotoToMovie (www.http://www.lqgraphics.com)
But in any event, it's only by having a movie that iPhoto will wok with the files.

  • Import audio across slides

Hi, I'm using Captivate 6 on NT. I need to import audio across mutiple slides, but I don't get the Split prompt. I went into Preferences and reset the Confirmation Message to prompt me for Split Audio, but I still don't get prompted. I turned on prompts for all types of other things, but not Split audio. I am importing 30 minutes of audio to a 3-second slide, so it should prompt me. I Searched for the Preferences folder so I could rename or delete it, but I can't find it.
    Thanks, Guy

Never mind, I got it! The prompt doesn't show up until AFTER it has imported the audio. With 30 minutes of audio, that's quite a lot of time! So I got the prompt and I'm good!
    Thanks!

  • Recording and importing Audio in 24Bit/48KHz...not working??

I cant figure out how I can set my project to 24bit/48....
I need to record and import Audio in 24/48 in my project.
I've already set Settings/Assets/Convert audio file sample rate when importing.....but when I drag an apple loop from the Media/Loops....it doesn't convert at all......it still show 16/44.1 in the bin.
I'm really lost here....and can't figure a way to set my project into 24/48. Am I missing something here? I use to be a Cubase user and Cubase does converts the files that I imported to my project.I understand that if I press control C in the audio file that I imported in the bin and that will change to what ever bits or KHz that I want to,but this isn't helping cause when I import the audio file, the file is already in the tempo of the project, but if I convert audio file from the bin.... the tempo will change due to the difference in Bit.
    Please help me out here...Thanks!

    Pancenter,
Thank you for the reply. Yes, according to the specs on page 73 of the Mac Pro User Guide (http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/Mac_Pro_UserGuide.pdf), it is spec'd to record 24-bit @ 48 kHz & 96k Hz. Here is the text from that page:
    Optical digital audio in
Based on a typical situation with playback of 1 kHz, 0dBFS 24-bit sine wave, unless
    otherwise specified below.
Â Input sample rate: 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, or 96 kHz
    Â Signal-to-noise ratio: Greater than130 dB
Â Total harmonic distortion + noise: Less than -130 dB (0.00001 percent)
    Additional specs include:
    Optical Digital Audio Specifications
    Â Data format: Sony/Phillips Digital Interface (S/PDIF) protocol (IEC60958-3)
Â Connector type: TOSLINK optical (IEC60874-17)
    Â Bits per sample: 16-bit or 24-bit
Therefore, I interpret these specs as saying that the Mac Pro is spec'd to record 24/96 without the need for a third party audio card.
Please reply back if you have a different interpretation or you concur with mine. I am interested as I have escalated the issue to the Apple's executive level and am open to being wrong if that is the case. In July, Apple Corporate Customer Relations informed me that engineering was able to duplicate my problem and are working on a fix. This month, Executive Customer Relations informed me that they are not able to address the problem at this time. I informed them that I consider Apple to be in breach of contract.
    John.

  • Importing audio in Flash CC - No sound or wave forms

So I am having an issue when I try to import audio to the library. In the library the file name shows but when I click on it it shows no wave form. No audio will play when testing or on timeline. File works perfectly fine in CS6. I can copy it from the library in CS6 and paste it into CC's library and it works fine. Any ideas?

Just curious, do you have Quicktime installed and is it updated?
Are you on a 32bit or 64bit OS?
Only reason I ask is CS6 is 32bit and CC is 64bit.

  • Adobe Captivate CS6 importing audio to the slide, worked correctly for 50 PowerPoint slides and the stopped working how do I resolve?

    Hi
I am working on a project as normal where I import a PowerPoint presentation to Captivate.  Then record the audio to the slide or if need be import the audio to the slide.  This has worked perfectly fine until today.
I went to the slide clicked on the option to import audio selected the audio and it imported to the library but not to the actual slide.
I tried doing this also from the menu bar.
Then I tried to drag and drop from the library with no luck.
I then deleted the audio file and tried the process over again.
Next I tried rebooting and starting over.
Still no luck.  What are my other options?  The file is a a mp3 that is 273 kb.
    Thank you

I'm relieved (if a little frustrated!) that others have the same issues, it makes me feel at least it's not just me! :-)
I am running Windows 7 64 bit Intel quad core processor 8Gb RAM if that helps Jim?
Another quick test shows I have exactly the same issues as shooternz and Ann Bens above at 7 & 8 respectively. An audio only or audio/video clip from Bin to SM and I can add markers on the fly perfectly. Audio/video from the timeline to SM works just the same. Audio only from the timeline will not work however.
I tried linking a video clip to my audio clip to see if that would allow me to add markers then unlink and remove the video... but when I opened that in SM the add marker button was greyed out and the keyboard shortcut (M) didn't work either!
    Curiouser and curiouser...

  • Importing audio from iTunes doesn't work

GarageBand won't let me import audio files (unprotected) from the media browser. When I try to drag a file into the GarageBand window, it simply snaps back.
When I right-click on the file and select "Show in Finder" it tells me, the file can't be found.
When I go to the same file in iTunes and select "Show in Finder" iTunes has no problem shown me the file.
Dragging the file to the desktop from iTunes and to GarageBand from there works.
    ???

I had the same issue recently.
I found a workaround which resolved in my case, which was to drag the (DRM protected) file from iTunes to my desktop and THEN to GB.

  • If I import audio books into the music section of itunes it lists the books as albums and all the chapters as tracks fine when I sync them to my ipod classic, but not if I import them as audiobooks, any ideas please?

If I import audio books into the music section of itunes it lists the books as albums and all the chapters as tracks fine when I sync them to my ipod classic, but not if I import them as audiobooks and then sync them, any ideas please?

If you import the audiobook as an audiobook to your iTunes Library, it will be listed in the Books section of your Library. You may need to turn on Books in order to see them. If you cannot see the File/Edit... etc. menu, use CTRL B on your keyboard to make that menu bar appear. Then go to Edit/Preferences>Books and put a tick in the box.
But, if the imported audiobook shows up in the Music section of your iTunes Library, highglight the files (in iTunes) and select File/Get Info/Options/Media Kind>Audiobook. These files will now transfer to the Books section of iTunes.
Once on an iPod Classic, look under the Audiobooks menu. Again, you may need to change the settings in the Settings menus, in order to have the Audiobooks option shown on the Main Menu and/or the Music Menu.

  • How do I find the tempo of imported audio files?

I import music tracks from iTunes to record voice/guitar and want to be accurate in the tempo..
    Diego

GarageBand does not show you the tempo of imported sound files. You have to count it out yourself. If you do not have a utility that will help you count, like Transscribe or Melodyne, cut a section of 8 (or 16) measures out of your recording and then change the tempo of your project, until this section fits exactly 8 or 16 measures in the timeline. This will give you rough idea of the average tempo, but usually your imported audio will have tempo changes, so I'd recommend to fine-tune the tempo locally using the tempo automation curve of the "Master" track.

  • Importing Audio-Itunes

What is the best way to import audio tracks from Itunes? When I try to drag or import from itunes the icon shows up in the viewer box but there is no audio / wave lines. I can put the blank track into the timeline but there is no audio. What am I doing wrong?

Convert your songs to AIFF, stereo, 16bit, 48KHz. That's the format FCE prefers. You can do the conversion in iTunes. However you cannot do this with protected songs.
